I know it's just a cue, but I feel that people should stop saying, "breathe into your belly" when trying to teach diaphragmatic breathing. Anatomically, it is impossible to "breathe into your belly" because your trachea goes directly to your lungs. We need to find a better cue for this because this cue is simply wrong.

In my experience, a cue is as good as its ability to produce the intended result. This cue, while semantically inaccurate, has always led to improved diaphragm control, especially when paired with a tactile cue of a hand over the abdomen. If you feel the need to avoid confusion with your patient, you can always take a second to explain the difference.

@@dludi8hn Very true. I can agree with that. But when I was younger, and someone told me to "breathe with your stomach". I never understood what the heck they were talking about.
