The Biggest Problem With Windows 11
In my honest opinion, one of the biggest problem of Microsoft is pushing out bad windows updates that break your pc.

Another thing MS does is not honor our settings. They just change things the way they want them. The other day I got an update, and suddenly GTA online began hard crashing. I went to Steam to validate the GTA files and 34 files didn't validate. It turned out the update changed Windows Firewall settings and it was blocking my game files. So I had to go through and give them all permissions, and like magic, all files validated and the game stopped crashing. There's still a few minor micro stutters I need to figure out. But at least the game is running again.

You were spot on when you said that they can't just leave it alone once it's stable. Totally agree! Currently on win10 and will stay there until the end of free security updates. I'm using my system mainly for creating music and for me, stability is everything. I also rather have little older tried and tested hardware than dealing with problems that comes with a new platform. @@Britec09 you forget that MS fired their internal testing division so they could use consumers as a guinea pigs for their patches made with the help of their simulated AI this is one of the reasons why i switched to Linux. And yes i know that Linux is community driven which means that the Linux users are also the beta testers. But here is the thing on Linux the fixes are usually released way faster for those problems than on windows. Also Microsoft releasing updates with bloat that brakes the OS is nothing new since that crap started with windows XP.

I've found that Microsoft focus more on "new features" and visual tweaks than stability. They believe that users are happiest when they have something new and shiney to convince them that Windows is being updated throughout its life cycle. And, to be sure, there are users out there that believe that if they don't get something changed or tweaked, or some useless new feature appear, that Windows has been abandoned. Alas, we live in a culture where we're always wanting the latest thing and Microsoft, in part, is falling into this mindset. For years I've advocated stability over new shinies, function over form and yet Microsoft continue to release clumsy updates. The optics here are not good, not good at all. However, MS simply don't care. If they did, we wouldn't wait 15 months for a fix. They don't care because they've captured the market years ago. Companies that have no serious competition become lazy and arrogant and this is what has happened to Microsoft. Just look at Intel for the decade before AMD struck back with Ryzen. Unfortunately, although Linux exists, it's not any serious threat to the dominance of Windows on a global scale and Microsoft know it.

They don't listen to feedback given in the feedback hub. I think that their priority is focused on business & enterprise users rather than the home users. Instead of adding new features that no one wants, they should focus on improving the interface to make it consistent across the operating system and fix bugs

They care about shareholders. Everything you said is exactly what shareholders love. "oh a new feature" "oh it looks different now" are all things that shareholders want to see to know that their investments are "growing". Meanwhile most users want consistency and reliability. I see this all the time with companies, not just Microsoft. Just push the unstable and untested design and fix the problems later. It's a terrible practice and I can't believe they're getting away with it.

I've not experienced the file explorer problem. But, what bothers me, is that apps like Co-Pilot, Edge, the cell phone link (that you have to sign in to use), etc. gives Microsoft a great way to mine your data to sell. I don't use any of that stuff or an account, and uninstall them whenever I can. Thx for the update.

I agree 100%. I've not had the explorer problem mentioned in your video but I've seen it happen on client machines. I'm an old IT Pro and never update on Patch Tuesdays and/or cumulative updates on the second Tuesday of the month, even though I'm on the Insider Program. I will wait at least a week in the hope that MS will release a fix the following week, but that's being a tad too optimistic. In general, it takes MS at least a year to release bug fixes and other stuff that's broken. As you correctly stated, Microsoft release patches to fix problems that often breaks other stuff so It's good to keep up to date with the forums to see what other people report. I always make a restore point and a registry export as backup before any updates.

I purchased a Geekkom Mini IT 13 based on your previous video (used your £40 discount code btw - cheers!). Given it came with Windows 11 I thought would give it a real try but I've had to wipe the drive and roll back to 10. Even if you don't encounter a bug, 11 just gives off a feeling of lacking polish or running beta code. Even Vista with its unfortunate bad rep didn't feel like this. Not sure if it's the rounded window edges, the gaudy icons or the modern UI elements but it just smells of unreliability. XP had its blue Fisher Price theme and massive security holes until SP2, but it didn't feel this unfinished and 11 is now over 2 years old. It's a shame because I bet all the latest CPU performance tweaks are going into 11. Just like how Edge or Teams has become though, I don't expect Microsoft to back tread and trim the feature set down for 12. It will just be a revamp to the UI and more of the same. Well done for pointing it out and voicing the opinion of us IT guys - you never know with your 783K subs, Microsoft may be listening.

My problems with it: 1) Interface is overly stylized and seems to mimic some weird hybrid of a smartphone interface with combination of MacOS and Windows 10. 2) Changing the right-click interface makes no sense and is not intuitive. The options that I want to select always seem to be under Show More Options. You can change the registry to make it so that Windows 11 uses the classic right-click menu and will not display whatever on Earth the default is. This would not be an issue if there was an option that right-click menu that Windows 11 has automatically can be changed to something more akin to Windows 10 or the classic right-click menu. This is still not an option in Windows 11. 3) You cannot change it so that clicking the Windows icon displays an alphabetical list of your applications/programs. You need to first click the icon. Then, click "All apps". You need to do some changes as Admin via Command Prompt to change this. There is no built in option to change this. 4) The GUI is geared heavily towards touchscreen users over mouse and keyboard users. There is no separate mode for touchscreen vs non-touchscreen. 5) Where options are in Settings is more obtuse and some seem confusing. 6) Windows 11 left as default is more demanding than Windows 10 left as default. 7) UI animations should not be enabled by default. 8) Unless you know how to use Terminal/Command Prompt or code, you stuck with some settings as mentioned prior. 9) Windows 11 messes with programs that range from minimal to making them non-functional. 10) The GUI is very similar in concept to ChromeOS. The sliverlining that is not as bad as ChromeOS. 11) Windows 11's default browser (Microsoft Edge) is essentially bloatware and you should disable it as much as possible and use any browser aside from it.

Hi Brian. Spot on as you always are. I commented on one of your earlier videos about switching to Windows 11 (worth it or not?). There is not one single feature in Windows 11 that mitigates Microsoft's idiocy in changing File Explorer. I would just love to meet the pencil-necked-geek who decided that eliminating the Move To/Copy To from the file handling menus was a good idea! Where was the moronic, common sense black hole that they were sucked up by, just so I know not to drive into it! And apparently, all of his/her buddies found it to be equally "genius" as well, seeing as though they have never reversed that issue. BTW, I love what you said about MS feature updates. Installing something new will almost assuredly break something else.

I got an automatic update from Debian 12.3 to 12.4 about a week ago which resulted in the new default kernel failing to boot to the desktop. I rebooted and selected the previous kernel version and everything came up again. A couple of days later a new update came out, I applied it and all is running as it should again. I've been running this Debian install for 10 years - yes, really - and just updating/upgrading as new stuff comes out. This was the first time that I've ever had a bad update. Getting back to work just required me to select the previous known good kernel from the Grub boot loader screen. This is the sort of stability that I'm sure many Windows users would dream of.

Hej Brian good video yes it there needs to be a much more testing internally at Microsoft before they release updates and features updates I also think that Microsoft is in too much of a hurry to release new things for Windows 11. And it's a bit like that when we have patch tuesday or optional updates so one wonders what might be breaking now in Windows that you also mention. It will be too much new things and i personally think that Microsoft should not release so many new things all the time give people a chance to get used to some new things first in Windows 11. As for Windows 10 i think Microsoft should offer a free extension and don't charge regular users. I run Windows 10 and also Windows 11 but i not gonna pay for Windows 10 later when mainstream suport ends. I wish you A Mary Christmas And A Happy New Year and all the others.

Windows history for most versions… 1) Release new operating system as a buggy mess 2) Most users stick with previous version 3) Over a number of years, countless patches finally make the new release usable and stable 4) World is happy for a short time using a very stable system 5) Release next new operating system as a buggy mess...rinse and repeat Most of my customers are still using Windows 10 (small to medium businesses). If I had to give an estimate of how many use Windows 11, it would be about 10%, and most of those were done by upgrade “accidents”. That is, when Microsoft tells them they have an "update", and the standard user does it upgrading their system from 10 to 11 (then I get calls saying WTH happened to my system). The people I deal with just want to do their jobs with no issues and go home. They don’t want to deal with computer glitches, and learning a new OS. That’s why I’ve always recommended staying on the older, stable Windows for as long as possible, until you just can’t do it anymore. I’ve had a small handful still using Windows 7, but that’s going to the other extreme.

When released NONE of the planes were correct, none of the ATC calls, and Navigation systems in the 787/747 worked, you could not input a navigation plan and it work. Connot tell you the number of times I tried (25 years of Flt Sims Experience) and it just never worked. Finely, this past summer, MS/Asobo released a fix which make those planes fly as advertised. I had shortly thereafter taken the Sim off my PC and never going to install it again. It's a mess now, and 2024 will be as big a mess too. MS you had your chance, you failed. NOW, heard windows 12????-name-is going to have just tons of AI crap in it. MS aint going there. I can and will install Linux and you will be done. Fair point with the "tinker and change stuff when its not needed", it is a big rusty nail im MS coffin. Microsoft still release the broken update that brake sound over hdmi on windows 10 but its easy to avoid it now. Have hardware and software to keep microsoft on the outside the door now. One point that you didnt mention is the reboot during nights even if you have open documents or programs, you can sleep and spend time with your dreams and the computer reboot by itself during nights and your documents is closed and not saved, your programs close and in some cases the program state isnt saved if you work with code or similar. I cant be the only one who have my computer running 24/7 ?! I have looked in windows 10 and there is no option to turn off automatic reboot, its either during nights when you need it or between a set time interval. Updates is still in the 1990s in windows, require reboot and cant read the news in a browser while updating and so on, i think they should fix that issue as well. Im a bit pampered by the update process in linux so i may see it with different eyes but i like the part where you can update your system and watch a stream or do your bank stuff while updating and reboot at your own pace. Its no "Reboot you pc NOW!!" in linux and i like that. I usually do my stuff and if i notice that its updates ready to install i pop up the terminal and use the magic - Update the list of updates and install and say yes to all - command and keep on working with whatever i worked with and finish it and the update work in the background until finished and when im finished i reboot my pc and start up with the new set of updates and all good. My little laptop is a happy chap now when MS cant bully it too much. The BIOS issue is still there when using windows but it cant be fixed ever i think. At times when i start the laptop i get a black screen and nothing else.. a emergency power off and reboot and the laptop works fine again. Its a asus snowflake laptop, special screen with touch and other weirdness going on. Its a asus transformerbook T100 i think.. Its a good service/work laptop in general so i keep it running until it dies.

The biggest problem with windows is one company owns the OS and also owns the application divisions. Whereas if they only own the OS, then they can concentrate their efforts better to ensure that their OS is stable and works with everything where they have no conflicts or agenda to the application and gaming division. Those two should stand on their own to compete in the marketplace as well as the OS. Having them under one umbrella is why we are seeing what are seeing. Having Windows open source by itself isn't going to fix the problem unless the OS itself is independent of the owner which is never going to happen.

Windows 95 was a lot better, although still not as stable as today and Windows 98 took a step back. It wasn't until Windows 2000 based on NT technology followed by Windows XP that we started to enjoy similar stability enjoyed today.

I wish they would add features like right click to chose setting/option and keep the setting/window still open after the choice/option has been made. Window magnet snapping. Hover over files and instantly have details show up and have it stay on when viewing multiple files when you hover from one to the other (it always stops showing the details flyout when you hover over files after like the third one and you have to hover off and back on to have the details show back up but then its the same bug again 3-5 max then it stop showing details)

This is another reason I suggested on your Linux comparison video that users virtually have to get used to a new operating system with each windows release. Sure Linux does that too but at least the earlier releases are almost always available long term.

@@geoffvk3sq113 I would be a pretty average user of technology these days, except perhaps for gaming, in which I do not participate. I am forced to use Windows for my 'work', which is using MYOB to do bookkeeping for the non-profit at which I volunteer. I do also have two personal machines from which I am loath to completely scrap Windows.and will set up dual booting for Linux. That said, my daily use machine runs Linux Mint 20.3 with the Cinnamon desktop. This is the operating system I have installed on all four of the machines our nfp has for casual and training use. We run one piece of proprietary software as part of our CNC design suite, otherwise open source software LibrreOffice, Blender, Inkscape and GIMP satisfy most of our general needs. I cannot be aware of what your particular software needs and skills are. If a largely MS Office compatible suite and a range of image and video manipulation tools will satisfy your use case then, I would suggest you begin by installing these on your WIndows machine. and determining if they will supply what you need. You would also have to adopt a non-MS specific browser like Chrome or Firefox. If you find those things are workable then you can progressively shift to trying a Linux distribution. Most distributions provide what is called 'live boot' where you can install them on a USB drive and run them from that drive to become familiar with them while preserving your Windows installation. Again, if that seems acceptable you could move to installing Linux as dual boot without having to ditch Windows completely. There are abundant videos and articles about how to do this or your local technician will be able to oblige. It is never a completely smooth transition and, as Brian's videos point out, Linux and the opensource ecosystem are not to everyone's liking. The most agreeable features for me are that most Linux distributions provide both current and legacy versions that will run on most hardware produced in the last 15-20 years, that you have much more obvious control over installing updates and, providing you back up your data files you can easily do a complete re-install. This is generally also true of the open source applications too and, with a few exceptions, the applications are free. I recently installed Qcad to do some 2D architectural work. Even though it was open source it cost probably about 50USD. This is a very small cost compared to proprietary alternatives and allows me to install on all my personal machines. New feature updates will come at an ongoing annual cost of about 60% of original purchase price but if I have no need of new features I have no ongoing costs.Sorry for the long-winded explanation and good luck!

This is the first I've heard of the windows explorer bug. I had no idea that this was happening to all the people. For some reason I never suffered with it. Wifi and Bluetooth Yes, I've always had trouble with those. especially with the sound system. Bluetooth sounds speakers, never seemed to go right. You're always having to mess with the settings to get them to work. I'm on the canary build. So I do get all the new stuff first. The only difference with my computer to everyone else is. That I've got rid of the Microsoft cloud, Whether or not that has something to do with it, I do not know. I'm not putting it back on to find out. I don't want it. At the start of Windows 11 it caused so many issues that I just wanted to get rid. The price they charge for extra memory is ridiculous they can keep their scam I'm not buying it. Weirdly enough, I have had far more trouble with Windows 10 than I have with 11.

With Windows 10, I tried to be all in Microsoft, both hardware and software. But their problems with both gradually left me with just Windows and what came with it. Then they started discontinuing and messing with the secondary apps which came with Windows. Eventually, all I used Microsoft for was to navigate to and use non-Microsoft products. Windows is basically a shell or hub. Even functions within the OS has been replaced by 3rd party apps. I toyed with Linux a few times, during the Windows 8 debacle and more recently. The only reason that I remain with Windows is because some software that I use doesn't work in Linux and lack linux alternatives. But Windows 11 seems like a repeat of Window 8 mistakes. When W10 is not longer supported, I will either alter W11 through 3rd party utilities which will make it even more of a shell or I will switch back to Linux.

the bane of utilizing the live service business model by the software developers. they make 70-80% complete program/patch then release. using the end-users as beta-testers and QA to save money there and make a patch from the end-user feed back. the problem is that the end users might not able to tell what they do truly to trip the issue... and currently MS got crappy QA team, probably from bug-thesda, slowing down the troubleshooting.

I can try and boil the problems with Windows down to two: 1. An operating system needs to sit in the background behind what the user is running on the computer. It should not be at the forefront of using that computer. It's supposed to activate the hardware on the system and give the user the ability to run software for that system...and that's it. Microsoft lost sight of this over a decade ago. Now the operating system needs to be at the front with a store, with built in advertising for other products and services from Microsoft, always online and connected to their cloud service, etc. They redefined what an operating system should be, but their new definition of it has them adding more and more stuff to it to where the lines between an operating system and installed software on top of it are very much blurred and as such they have lost focus. Trying to bring user applications and services to the OS level so that they are inseparable prevents Microsoft from focusing on making a stable reliable operating system underneath it. This creates applications and services shipped as part of the OS that people don't need (bloat). When they update components they change user settings accordingly because it's not just an operating system for the user to use the hardware they own. It's now an integrated system that lets Microsoft push more and more of their offerings to people directly. 2. They must have chronic management problems at their company. This must've been created, at least in part, by a lack of a clear definition of what Windows should be as I described in the first point. This leads to too many software teams working on Windows and each team is doing their own part of it, but they keep stepping on each other and they most likely don't all have the same system checks and balances for quality control and debugging. For example, they fixed the windows explorer bug, but that took a long time to get done and far longer for what should be an essential part of being able to use the system. How much finger pointing happened behind the scenes internally between the various teams that build components that allow windows explorer to run before they finally got the right team to fix it? They won't tell us outright what happened, but maybe it wasn't a problem with Windows Explorer software itself, maybe it was another feature/service in the OS that was triggering it? Stuff like that with the finger pointing and power struggles that most likely happened behind the scenes indicates a management issue. When they created problems with WiFi in their latest update, was it the fix for Windows Explorer that fixed it, or any of the other many fixes they put in that set it off? Maybe it was something from the kernel team patching a bug, but now drivers need to be updated, but they didn't tell the hardware manufacturers so they haven't updated their drivers yet? Messes like this are more management than technical in nature and a clear lack of testing on actual hardware. Microsoft has so much money going into it in revenue that they really could be testing on a wide range of hardware and hardware combinations at a scale far larger than they currently are now, the fact that they aren't is a question for their management. The teams will do what they are paid to do, but they most likely have too many teams, too many management levels, etc., involved due to the lack of focus on what an operating system should be.
