Gas $240 total left $660. Cell phone $120, down to $540. That’s just the BASIC functions of life. Now we’ll get into adulthood. Well I suppose I’d have to get a girlfriend, assuming she is cool with going out once every 2 weeks at $100 a date for both of us, so I’m down to $340. Well shiiiiiii my car just had a malfunction $300 (in fantasy land cause I WISH a problem cost that much in parts and labor) balance remaining $40……….. keep in mind, I don’t talk to my family, add whatever you spend on yours for gifts (Christmas/birthday), I’m also single and childless (thank Christ cause I would never see my child working 80-100 hour weeks to support them) so factor in what your friends and you spend on yours if you have them. You also have to put 10 percent of your paychecks in savings just to be safe. Housing down payments are usually 10 percent down, avg home in my area is $250k…….. please tell me where I can cut back on life, as to afford that sweet, juicy, $25,000.00 down I’d need for that house? I like Tim's take on this. The bad guy always needs to be a vague amorphous idea(he war on terror, loneliness, racism, poverty, climate change, etc). Never should we ask questions about the underlying economic forces and powerful entities that create the conditions for these things to thrive. Maybe we'd be less lonely if we weren't all poor, busy, and stuck in a social hierarchy that's based solely on our bank balance.

Solitude is so blissful. Seriously, so many people are such energy vampires. Get outdoors, hang out with your 4 legged friends, do hobbies and work in the yard. Loneliness is a state of mind. Loneliness was the best thing to ever happen to me. The introspection when coupled with active effort towards betterment results in a beautiful existence. I learned forgiveness, reflected on my actions that led me to that point, and made the change. That being said, yeah, loneliness does kill the elderly. My foray into loneliness was in my late 20s and I was attending university as an older jaded grad student.

Same with me man! I hit 30 and just started hating everything about myself and what I was doing. Stopped drinking every weekend, shut myself in, and practiced a LOT of self-reflective exercises. Got myself back into music and fitness. Not going out every weekend really showed me how much time I was wasting with mediocre people. Also really got into the heart of my anger and insecurities. Yes, some of it was my own behavior and attitude, and some of it was from other people. Changing your thought habits takes a lot of care and sobriety. I think if you don't take that time in your younger years to isolate and sort yourself out, you're destined to by lonely later on once everything you've ignored inevitably takes over.

Solitude and loneliness are two different things
@nugsboodlepoo

Learning how to be alone and not lonely can be character building. You become a real individual when you're alone a lot. You learn how to enjoy your own company. You acquire a lot of technical and artistic skills. It's not for everyone but there is freedom and peace to be found in solitude.

It is both. Loneliness and breakdown of community/friendship/male-female relationships is a huge problem making everyone mentally ill, and we are doing terrible economically. Many of our problems are due to wealth/materialism but economic security alone will not make us whole.

The problem with the US is its overextended road system. Why did everything get built so far away that a car was necessary to go anywhere? to go to school or buy groceries is like 5 miles. walking anywhere would take 1-2 hours. no one walks and talks to.each other on the street (except maybe downtown NYC ) when you travel in a car by yourself all the time. from home to work to home... of course its hard to interact with people, because of the infrastructure built decades ago (perhaps there was a conspiracy between early american car companies like Ford and the government to make everyone dependent on cars bc everything is made to be far away??) In other countries, Europe, LATAM, everything is walking distance within a 2-mile radius (and I mean everything housing entertainment gym work) people cross each other more and speak to each other just walking this was how naturally communities were built. USA did it differently and now its a dystopic isolating hell hole.

Remember taking a large dose of shrooms once and watching a funny movie, laughed my ass off with the other guy in the room and we were both on the exact same wavelength, had an amazing time. Woke up the next day after the wore off and realised there was nobody there, it was just me and myself. Never felt lonely since because I realised the cause of the feeling of loneliness is because there’s this urge to be in the company of someone whose on your wavelength and completely understands you. Wether that urge comes from social programming or whatever, truth is that person will never exist because the only person that fits that criteria is yourself.

I don't think people have to be a perfect fit for things to be good. Just requires a bit of empathy and a tacit agreement that some differences are ok and acceptable. Then you can actually appreciate each other's quirks and have a great time.
