Yeah, Idunno what they're thinking. The BMPCC is such a bizarre form-factor. It's basically become the shape of a gigantic photography camera. That makes no sense for a video-camera. Why don't they make it the shape of a camcorder? Or a box camera?

@cuantosabee506311 ай бұрын
The best part is the v mount, I am in love with that part of the mod, I know it is a lot to ask for, but in my opinion the ideal would be for the monitor to be removable. My idea is to have an extension of the cable that connects the monitor to the body of the camera and the monitor to have a 1/4" screw with locating pins on the base to place the monitor on a top handle if you want.
@DangerousDevilOfficial11 ай бұрын
When seeing this mod, that is the first thing I thought of too. Is a removable, modular monitor for a future iteration of this camera. That would be perfect with this V Mount location.

I'd suggest an additional step in the mod, regarding that ribbon cable. I'd pick a industrial shelf purchase plug so that you use a cable to plug into the body and into the monitor. This is just to prevent a future failure point on that ribbon cable. Currently if it malfunctions, you are stuck, but a cable with plugs, even if you never replace it, if you have to, you can,
@andrewnibbi11 ай бұрын
My thoughts exactly. If you were going all out, it’d be nice to do a pogo pin setup, but even just having a standard connector for however many conductors are needed would really make this much better.

Really interesting mod effort! I'd say the following shortcomings would need to be addressed though. -Monitor doesn't seem to be able to swivel left and right. -Ribbon cable seems susceptible to damage in the long run -Hole where ribbon cable exits the body on the top is just waiting for dust/ water ingress to damage the camera's internals. I think making the monitor completely removable by adding ports to the body would address most of people's issues with this mod. Best of luck!
@philippscheithauer11 ай бұрын
For sure, you could also treat it more likea. boxed camera then and rig it out if production calls for it.
@DangerousDevilOfficial11 ай бұрын
When seeing this mod, the first thing I thought of is a removable, modular monitor for a future iteration of this camera, with a specific place to mount on the body, with of course a mount that is a part of the internal frame to the camera, to make it strong and rigid. Have the monitor on a swivel and hinge type of mounting arm. So that the monitor can rotate 180 degrees and also angle freely. This would give you almost unlimited control where you could view the monitor well, while working. While I think this mod has a lot of promise, one thing I am not keen on, is filing down part of the housing to make a permanent change. To the camera housing case. Even being small, it still allows for an opening into the camera where, dirt, dust and debris can enter, thereby causing other unforeseen issues down the road. Especially in dirty filming environments. I think the mod idea I have would be perfect with this V Mount location. There is definitely some ideas percolating in my mind how this camera would be the ultimate camera…. It is great in many areas. And with a few mods for these things, it would be revolutionary. 🤷♂️

This really solves so many issues and I love that. My biggest issue is screen replacements, I've never had any luck getting my bmpcc4K screen repaired after it delaminated through no damage I did to the point only some parts of the screen are touch-capable. I'd kill to just find a replacement screen so I can start using this camera again. BlackMagic was no real help.

For Blackmagic Design specifically, I wish there was an option to just replace the BMPCC 4K's monitor with a brighter one and have it articulate. If they did a 4K version of the 6K G2 and make it a little cheaper, that would sell like crazy. Not everyone needs 6K resolution. As far as modding goes. For the BMPCC 4K users I have an option of a brighter screen. For all the pocket line and the newer full frame one, I would do an option for the mod kit to include a removable cable connection for the screen instead of the ribbon. This way you can place the screen anywhere on a cage via cold shoe or nato maybe. This way if users want handles, mics, rods with lens supports and matte boxes, etc. they can do that. One last mod I would add is direct storage support like the Sandisk Professional PRO-BLADE SSD. I wish I had the equipment to make my own modded version.

I'm sorry but if a camera forces people to physically modify it to this point, then it's time for Blackmagic to finally listen to their customers and make some changes. Modding a camera (which is a tool most of us use on client work to make $$$), just doesn't sit well with me. I've heard so many horror stories of BMPCC and Sigma FP users who've modded their cameras and ran into issues. You mentioned the word "frustration" a lot -- that generally sums up my feelings about Blackmagic cameras. PS: @3:27 I'll take RED's DSMC3 user interface over Blackmagic

D&O Lighting used to sell a v-mount brick that lets you plug it into a wall. It was basically a power adapter that fits into a v-mount battery plate. I don’t know if they still sell it, but if they do you could use it to power your cameras from wall power. That’s what I do.

Pledged! I think this looks really promising. I have two P4Ks and this could potentially turn one of them into a more nimble set up. Willing to give it a try! I've always used them with external monitors rigged to top handles, which is the main reason I've added the top handle for anyway. Carrying the camera and resting between shots are secondary uses, but I rarely find myself using the handle while recording. The way this places the monitor on top of the camera, and much closer to the body compared to attaching it to a handle, while also freeing up the HDMI port to be used with a transmitter rather than an extra monitor is really good. Plus you run power and video feed to the monitor over the same cable, giving you a much cleaner build without external batteries or power cables to D-tap and extruding HDMI ports. With a half cage on the left side like you showed, you can still rig up a rod with follow focus and keep the small footprint. The only things that I can see as possible limitations are if you want to add a shotgun microphone or an easyrig. But I'm sure that can be worked around somehow. Great to see that you can still improve these cameras all these years later. Would be very interested to see a gen 2 of this solution for the 6K Pro with internal NDs, with some thoughts to how you can improve further and allow for more versatile builds. Now we just need BM to support more anamorphic ratios natively, which is another drawback from getting rid of the external monitor.

Great idea here but it’s a little too late and the compromises don’t outweigh modern solutions. Dealbreakers: 1. Disabling wall power. 90% of my shoots with the pockets are in controlled studios, interviews or commercials where power is plentiful. V mounts are cool but wall power is a must to both keep the camera going and charge the battery. 2. No good way to travel/store the camera without risking the monitor getting beat up. 3. Eliminating a top handle solution. Man, I really wanted to like this thing but a cage and a cheap monitor sounds like it’s the way to go… (or the titla route) Fantastic video never the less. I've always been a fan of Blackmagic cameras; however, because of the type of work that I do, I've never bought one. I shoot live theatre, concerts and dance shows so I use a number of cameras for multicam shoots. I have two GH5s, one GH5 ii, and one GH6. One of the things I like about the Panasonic cameras is that I can power the cameras with USB power banks. The GH5 ii and the GH6 can be powered with a USB via USB-C without a dummy battery. This means that if the USB power bank runs dead or the cable is pulled it switches seamlessly. The GH6 has great IBIS so I use it for close-ups. The auto focus is good in good light but if the light is low, it is kind of iffy. I found a solution. Setting the focus limiter has eliminated any loss of auto focus. One thing I like about BMC is they shoot ProRes. I get around this by using Atomos recorders. I have three Ninja Vs, one Ninja Blade and one Samurai.

I do use the large V-mounts with mine but I had bought a V-mount belt clip that Small Rig makes and 2 pin to D-tap cable. It is a little tricky sometimes if you are using a gimbal. I have to rig something similar when I use the Tilta Float, but then I have two V-mounts at the bottom for balance and power. Something that would be really great is if BMD could make the functions compatible with the Ronin so you could use one of the buttons on the Ronin to start record on the camera. If there is a way, I've never been able to get it to work and always have to do it manually or through the app on Ipad. I agree, the screen can be pretty useless but for the functions

The design is practical for the most part, but the battery situation can only be better by doing it the same way they do cell phones. For instance, at least %50 of the fabrication and design of an iPhone is the battery. Blackmagic would need to integrate the battery to be half the design in which is possible but adds weight and fabrication cost. Personally, I use a Bauer 8aH battery + inverter with USB power and 120V 150W AC outlet, and it powers everything. (These batteries are designed for power tools - very durable). Also, the 120V outlet and USB ports can be used at the same time. Yes, these inverters exist and are not expensive at Harbor Frieght. Get them before the price hikes.

Camera is best in a cage, with top handle. V mount options are easy to come by on a rail system and throw your monitor on top. This is cool, but I think a tad late to the party. We all have our solutions now.
@chungdha11 ай бұрын
Blackmagic themselves keep just milking out the same camera body, instead of listening to the end users for a better design. Though it looks like a cool mod, but wished it would allow a top grip especially when the camera is fully rigged out to work with a full crew with transmitter and wireless follow focus, you kinda need a top grip for an easyrig. It be nice if longer ribbon cable that allowed to position the monitor to a top grip and allow to use it with a full cage.
@sergiomartinez594611 ай бұрын
While at first I was excited for this, I quickly realized that it's not viable for several reasons: 1.The power connector is disabled. If I do an indoor interview shoot it's nice to not have to use batteries. This is also removes other power options, and if you have the 4K, using the Canon batteries isn't really a good one. 2.It's limited on the vmount batteries you can use. You can only use smaller ones because something bigger would block the buttons. And going back to point 1, since the power input is disabled, that means I can't use a bigger vmount to connect to it if I so desired. 3.The ribbon cable poking out is asking to be broken. A handle with a hot-shoe or pin connectors would have been better. 4.No cage. I love these cameras and I love rigging them. I can't mount a follow focus on this because I can't put a cage, no more handles, accessories, etc. I can't even mount a wireless monitoring system if I need to. They said they wanted to build this so you wouldn't need a cage, however cages are useful. What about using rails, or baseplates and the like? All in all, I hope this does wake Blackmagic up and they come out with a new body and new system instead of just releasing the same body with "new" features. It's sad that people have to resort to modding their cameras in such a way.

Very cool but may be a little too late? I don't know. We'll see how successful the kickstarter is. We have four Pocket 4K's we have already figured out all of our workarounds for battery (NPF battery in a side handle that holds the SSD from Tilta). To drop another $300 on these pocket cameras as they get older doesn't really make sense to me. But best of luck to this project.

It's interessting!! But... 1- What about the Mic Place XLR (for Sound)? 2- In this case, It could be easy for blackmagic to do It: "Just give the opción on the EVF place (Shoes) to use it also with A Portable HDMI on the of the EVF as well". And eliminate the screen in the back, and replace It by a VL Battery mount shoes in screen place. In theory, it's seems not so complicate to do. @extremeloser11 ай бұрын
Weell, kudos for the mod and the design. Looks really solid. However losing the capability to use the lemo port is kind of bummer and a big one imo. Also I see potential problems in using the camera on a gimbal with this mod. With the original camera you can use whatever battery you want. For example an npf plate with a cold shoe quick release is a very viable option. It will give almost the same juice as this micro v-mounts. They are smaller and way cheaper than v-mounts. Also when you use the camera on a gimbal you can mount the plate in the gimbal itself and use just a small lemo cable extension. One battery gives you around 3 hours non stop recording so with 2,3 batteries you are set for the day.

If they were going the extra mile to replace the rear element, design a monitor w/ new housing etc etc.. it’s entirely possible to just redesign the camera into a more ‘brain’ like body such as the komodo, alexa mini. This would reposition all the camera buttons so that they could be on the sides on the camera or at the top, out of the way of the battery plate. Also adding more surf area for rigging.

BUT maybe there is a different way to rig with this mod that would work for commercial/narrative work. Would love to see you and maybe someone you guys know do a field test with this mod to see how this can be used in all different types of shoots/setups

Yeah, not having a top handle is a big deal to me too for the reasons mentioned. Plus, bending that ribbon cable back and forth scares me. I've been using a PortKeys LH5P (which costs $100 more than this mod) which gives you touch control over a lot more features - even switching from ProRes to BRAW etc. and I mount it to a Smallrig EVF arm attached to my top handle. This is a super cool design - in an ideal fantasy world it would be great if Blackmagic made a monitor that could be relocated wherever, and connected with a proprietary cable, with replacement cables widely available. Or maybe something like RED's system with contacts.

The Tilta mod is still a better solution for gimbal duty, which is where the Pockets shine. You can use any ol' cinema camera for tripod duty in controlled light. I would use the P6k G2 or P6k Pro, but imo run-and-gun really needs a good zoom lens and the EF mount has limited options for a mid-range zoom for Super 35. There is this guy IMCE on yt that is gonna make a box rehouse for the pocket 6k and it will have v mount or npf don't remember and the best it will have e-mount

Just get a 68w Auton Bauer Titon base battery everyone and all your problems will be solved. I don’t know why most people want to rig their batteries in the back of the camera… it isn’t practical. Put it at the bottom, and you will never struggle for any application (handheld, tripod, etc…). You also don’t loose the cage compatibility and can add accessories wherever on the camera without the battery getting in your way. I agree, the camera batteries are trash. This Auton battery lasts 3 hours powering both, the camera while recording, and a Teradek transmitter. Also, just get the 6k pro which has a tilt screen for your screen issues 👍🏼

Would have been better if the monitor wasn't hard mounted but instead was mounted on something like NATO rails and the ribbon cable had some connector and we could run some extension cable. That way there's still option to use a full cage together with all the accessories if needed and it would make external monitors not needed in large amount of cases.

I'm just going to wait for the BMMSC 4k G2 and see how the various types of camera control function with it. Word it that the Protkeys monitors should be able to control them, and there are some rumors one might also be able to control them with a modern video assist.

And I will tell you there will not be a 4k G2

The hinge should be able to close down so the screen is protected and maybe a specific battery that is big enough so when you close down the screen it makes a clean square design… Just ideas. Great job guys.

The screen in not bright enough. Where could I place an external monitor? And I'm not so sure about not having the option for a top handle. Other than that it looks amazing! Any thing in the works to solve these two issues? :)

This is a very interesting mod! I always thought the best way to resolve the battery issue without changing the pocket format (which I love) would be to do something similar to the Canon C70, having an external battery mount to at least have a giant NPF battery to juice up the camera, so I guess this is the closest I’ve seen to why I imagined

Everyone in the film world misses the essence of BM pocket cameras. They are designed first as small live production cameras which then have filming features added on afterwards. And if you put the pocket cameras on sticks, raise them up to eye level, and add a focus demand to the fluid head handle-all of a sudden the 5” screen is in its native position. With that said, would I try the modification you demo here, even though I’m mostly a cine shooter? No, and that comes down to the build of the camera body itself. It’s a cute design, but bump that monitor a few times in and out of a bag or on set and the camera starts to crack, not to mention the strain of v-mounts on and off the back of a camera not designed to handle the repeated strain. I’ve never had a problem with rigging v-mounts. I’ve always used a base plate system which gets the camera up relative to the rails, and I’ve set the v-mount receiver in a prone position so the battery doesn’t interfere with the screen. This makes for a slightly longer rig, but it also keeps the center of gravity low relative to the fluid head. And now that we have mini v-mount batteries, the length isn’t even an issue any more. And let’s not forget the Tilta Lightweight Shoulder Rig which makes it really easy to mount batteries low and behind the shoulder. And with all that said, there’s far more robust ways to solve the problem this modification tries to address, especially with the more recent BM designs which have tilting screens.

I think this is a great design for traveling, but I cant really see myself using it over my current 6k setup. I prefer the top handle with a monitor and I'd be too worried of accidentally busting the main monitor with it exposed like that. The main pressure points I want them to focus on are making a full frame version, with internal NDs, and a cube configuration. I know thats asking for pretty much everything, but I do a wide variety of work and being able to shoot wider for clients that want social content would make my life so much easier. Also, if it was a cube configuration, you could actually mount the camera vertically on a tripod, very tough with the current configuration. Great video overall and it's good to know there are people trying to fix the 6k current issues.

cool concept but without a cage and top handle it's no go for daily video application. If you don't need those things, this is awesome.

Was thinking the same thing. I’d be to nervous to take my camera apart. But I’d definitely either send it for someone else to do it or buy one already converted.

It’s super cool. But the two complaints I have, is that you cant remove the monitor and you can’t put a half cage on it. I still want to be able to put a side or top handle on it and incorporate the SSD. So hopefully I get will be fixed. And no offense but the quarter cages suck. Has to be half cage for me. I wonder if he could move the menu buttons so that they are also on the screen? Then you can use any size v mount.
@livingforhim11 ай бұрын
Gah! It is so close to being perfect! - I still really want/need the top handle, there has got to be a way to mod it a bit more to allow screen to go on the top - is there a way to do plug and play ribbon cable to remove the monitor or make it longer? - the hole where the ribbon comes out, is there a foam or soemthing that can be put to fill that in to stop dust or moisture form getting in?

You don't "need" to use V-mount, I build my setup with NP-F batteries, i am using 10k mAh Batteries and one battery lasts me 3-4 hours. Plus i dont block my screen (that was the point of my setup), also, monitors and many lights also use NP-F so i have like 8 huge NP-F batteries and can use then for whatever.
@YoIomaster7 ай бұрын
Huge in the sense that they have large capacity, they're actually smaller than regular v-mount and the size as the smaller v-mount batteries.

I has many problems, the fact that you can't use a cage makes it unusable for me, especially for the lack of top handle and attachment threads all around. Also, the horizontal placement of the battery forcing to use a nano battery is not good. There are many types of v-mount, and not everybody invested in SWX Core nano, or FXLion, or this specific size. I need to use big batteries too, but it looks like they would cover the buttons. And it doesn't allow to use sandwich items like power distribution plates or wireless transmitters, that are made to keep the rig very very compact. However, these interesting mods are a symptom of Blackmagic refusal to acknowledge the needs of the Pocket users. A camera with a box form factor and a battery plate behind the body. Otherwise, as soon as one was to rig it a bit seriously, a rod system is needed with stuff 5-10 cm far from the monitor and the camera quickly becomes longer and more cumbersome than an Ursa, that's ridiculous (and it's the reason I won't buy any more "pocket" cameras like these anymore).
