Time to return to Canada and we look into the twisted and disturbing tale of Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka. They were on a rampage for years in Ontario, and were only finally caught when Karla Homolka finally turned Paul Bernardo in. But that's not the end of the story.

I grew up with parents like that, was constantly told that if I wasn't home on time, I'd be locked out, if I was drunk, don't bother calling for a ride, that sort of thing. It's a really stupid thing to do to your kids, and the latter - coming home drunk - got me in trouble when I was 17. I got drunk, so I drove to my friend's house at 2am and her parents let me in without question. They were not nice people, but in a way, were better parents than mine. I could have killed someone, AND I would never have driven drunk except I was on a blind date and he tried to rape me. And I knew I couldn't call home. People are so stupid sometimes. I was lucky. Not everyone is.

@@shaldana I am a firm believer in parents treating their children with respect. You can’t just always demand respect with no reciprocation. Kids screw up and need direction absolutely, but damn so many parents treat their kids like sub-humans.
@shaldana
@shaldana 2 жыл бұрын
@@SueP-D You're absolutely right. Respect was never something I had from my parents, and I actually was a really good kid - not that they thought so. The incident I described above was a one-off. I rarely drank, and my best friend was a good kid too. My dad is dead now, my mom is 80, so this was a long time ago, but growing up in that house took nearly 2 decades of therapy to sort out, and I'm writing a book about it now actually. Respect -- so much so, and it needs to be there from the start, not later on in life. When I was around 40, my mom decided she wanted back in my life more and actually tried to parent me. It was really weird. I owned a house, had a great career, was doing just fine. I was stupid and tried to patch things up with her. She hadn't changed a bit, and she doesn't understand why I can't stand being in the same room as her for very long. You can't get respect later in life. I've often wondered what life would have been like if respect had been there as a child, and not 4 decades down the road?

A friend of mine was assaulted when she got off the subway in Scarborough and, judging by the description, it was Paul Bernardo. Luckily her screaming attracted attention from passers by and she was able to deck the guy and get away. The truly horrific part is that when the police were called they told us “since she is not bleeding, she’s not a priority.” We had to take her to another part of the city to get the police to even take a report.

I can’t imagine being Leslie’s parents who locked her out, if they’d only left the door unlocked for their daughter she would still be alive. When you have teenagers it’s better to have a deal with them that they can call you if they ever get drunk or ingest drugs or get stranded or if they feel uncomfortable or run into trouble. Their safety is more important than forcing them to follow the rules. Teenagers, even the most obedient, can wind up in a bad situation and knowing that mom and dad will save them with minimal lecturing can literally actually save their lives. I think there are several times where having that deal with my mom was crucial in my life. Give your kids the safety net that only you can offer.

So coddle them and allow them to do whatever they want while you save them every step of the way? Yeah last time I checked that leads to spoiled kids who grow up to not know what consequences are. You should lecture them, you should tell them what they are doing is wrong and they are ruining their lives. Yes you should pick them up and save them if they need it but you also need to put your foot down. I would be locked out if I missed curfew and guess what I knew it was wrong and di it on purpose to stay at friends houses and got in alot of trouble as a kid, but I also had alot of consequences do to the choices I made, which made me learn I can't do whatever I want and I need to follow rules. Sometimes letting them fall on their a** and hit bottom is the best choice. Now I wouldn't lock my child out at 14 but they definitely would be getting punished for their stupid choices. I don't drink or do drugs and don't smoke cigarettes either. So they shouldn't. I'm not being a bad influence. This is why everyone is selfish and does whatever they want and will kill whoever they want, everyone let's their kids get away with everything including murder. Grow the f*ck up. You're not their best friend, and once they know they can get away with everything they will continue to do so

I grew up as a teen when they were searching for their white/cream coloured Camero. We were not allowed out alone and had to be home early. If allowed out at all. Was a scary time. My heart goes out to the Mahaffy’s and especially Mr and Mrs French. They spoke at our highschool a few years later. Thank you for your research on Karla “pre-Bernardo”. I have only ever heard there were no signs of any behaviour that would even suggest this happening. She grew up in a normal home is all we hear. Oh how my heart aches for Kristen French. Non of us here will ever be able to be able to get the image of her out of our heads. She was everywhere here in St Catharines. I’ve always wondered, “why her?” Breaks my heart. I wish there was more about her and her legacy than Bernardo and Homolka. Kristen was such a wonderful, kind beautiful young lady. Nothing she ever did deserved this. She is a special to me.

a woman getting away with committing crimes...that almost never happens! (sarcasm intensifies) 14:48 this is quite possibly the WORST way to understand something. Denying your own capacity for malevolence by refusing to put yourself in that position and ponder why and how, you are denying your own capacity for malevolence and potentially harboring those feelings to arise at moments without your control. You control yourself first by acknowledging your capacity to do harm, and capacity to suffer. by refusing to place yourself in the position of someone who is willfully harming someone, you are completely ignoring that part of you that does exist, but remains unacknowledged.

A number of writers have said that, and that other later revelations should have put her in prison for longer. What this video does not mention is that her first lawyer (not the one whose brother she married) was one of the best criminal trial attorneys in Canada at the time. He was also a dog person, and had a beloved dalmatian whom he brought to the veterinary clinic where Karla Homolka worked. Karla was apparently very kind to the dog and this left a positive impression on the lawyer. This might have made him especially zealous in his defense.

This case outraged every decent Canadian from coast to coast and it's a damn big country. The fact that Karla ( now Debbie ) has 3 children of her own and enjoys a very comfortable life with her spouse is absolutely sickening. She gave back nothing and did not even have to pay by completing her sentence. She was mollycoddled in prison, protected from the chronically over-imprisoned aboriginal/African Canadian prisoners sentenced to twice the time for nowhere near the offenses she committed. Due to the incredibly high profile of her case, nothing could happen to her that would showcase how racist and classist our departments of corrections are. Now she's free, he's still upright and sniffing air, and there are still victims out there who've never received one iota of justice. Their collective crimes victimised this country. The French and Mohaffey families still have to endure their daily devastations. My heart goes out to them, and to their lost daughters.

I avoided this episode as it was a little too close to home. At the time that Leslie Mahaffy went missing, the night of that remembrance party, one of the other kids at that party was Leslie's best friend (BF) and she was a foster child of ours. BF was the last person to see Leslie before she headed home. BF moved to a group home quite soon after this happened. She was hounded by police and by Leslie's parents as they all assumed she knew more about why Leslie was missing. It was a horrible situation for everyone involved. Leslie's favorite flower was the daisy. BF had daisies on everything she owned. She suffered greatly from the automatic assumptions made. Mike, you never cease to amaze me. I doubt G-d would be giving paul and karla any power over that innocent girl now or ever. Where those 2 monsters are going they won't be a bother nor have anything to do with harming anybody again, except maybe each other for all eternity. A bit Dante of me, couldn't help it as neither one shows an ounce of regret or even honest level of repentence for what they did. Her sister ! dasterdly.

I found the channel about a week ago and I've been bingeing to catch up since then. As a Canadian, this is a case that has particularly horrified me. The response of a young Paul Bernardo to the news of his paternity says to me that Paul was determined to make his mother regret ever having that affair. If Mike sees this and is looking for subjects for further videos, another Canadian case that I'm surprised hasn't received more attention on KZbin true crime channels is Clifford Robert Olson.

My mother and I had a brief encounter with Paul Bernardo. I will never forget it. Both my mother and I instinctively sensed that there was something very wrong with him, and we only later discovered that it was him. I was a teen at the time, and it was a powerful lesson in trusting your instincts.

jackybaby1999 My Mom and I were waiting at the GO train (commuter train) station to pick up my sister. A man walked past our car- cutting across the parking lot. He was maybe 20 feet from us. Both of us reached up and locked our door at the exact same time. We kind of chuckled, but talked about why we did that- what was it about that man that rose the hair on the back of the neck? Within seconds another man came out of the same place the first one- and it’s very unusual for anyone to come from that direction. The first man was very well kept, the second man was scruffy. We talked about why the clean cut one made us wary, but the scruffy one made us feel much safer as he walked by. He was arrested the next day. As soon as we saw his photo on the news , my Mom and I shouted “Oh my God!! THAT’s the Guy from the parking lot!”. The first man was Paul Bernardo, the second one was a cop tailing him. I couldn’t have had a better lesson in trusting your instinct. Still gives me goosebumps.
