I grew up with parents like that, was constantly told that if I wasn't home on time, I'd be locked out, if I was drunk, don't bother calling for a ride, that sort of thing. It's a really stupid thing to do to your kids, and the latter - coming home drunk - got me in trouble when I was 17. I got drunk, so I drove to my friend's house at 2am and her parents let me in without question. They were not nice people, but in a way, were better parents than mine. I could have killed someone, AND I would never have driven drunk except I was on a blind date and he tried to rape me. And I knew I couldn't call home. People are so stupid sometimes. I was lucky. Not everyone is.

@@shaldana I am a firm believer in parents treating their children with respect. You can’t just always demand respect with no reciprocation. Kids screw up and need direction absolutely, but damn so many parents treat their kids like sub-humans.
@shaldana3 жыл бұрын
@@SueP-D You're absolutely right. Respect was never something I had from my parents, and I actually was a really good kid - not that they thought so. The incident I described above was a one-off. I rarely drank, and my best friend was a good kid too. My dad is dead now, my mom is 80, so this was a long time ago, but growing up in that house took nearly 2 decades of therapy to sort out, and I'm writing a book about it now actually. Respect -- so much so, and it needs to be there from the start, not later on in life. When I was around 40, my mom decided she wanted back in my life more and actually tried to parent me. It was really weird. I owned a house, had a great career, was doing just fine. I was stupid and tried to patch things up with her. She hadn't changed a bit, and she doesn't understand why I can't stand being in the same room as her for very long. You can't get respect later in life. I've often wondered what life would have been like if respect had been there as a child, and not 4 decades down the road?

@lindseyhudson12743 жыл бұрын
I can’t imagine being Leslie’s parents who locked her out, if they’d only left the door unlocked for their daughter she would still be alive. When you have teenagers it’s better to have a deal with them that they can call you if they ever get drunk or ingest drugs or get stranded or if they feel uncomfortable or run into trouble. Their safety is more important than forcing them to follow the rules. Teenagers, even the most obedient, can wind up in a bad situation and knowing that mom and dad will save them with minimal lecturing can literally actually save their lives. I think there are several times where having that deal with my mom was crucial in my life. Give your kids the safety net that only you can offer.

@rayagray63212 жыл бұрын
So coddle them and allow them to do whatever they want while you save them every step of the way? Yeah last time I checked that leads to spoiled kids who grow up to not know what consequences are. You should lecture them, you should tell them what they are doing is wrong and they are ruining their lives. Yes you should pick them up and save them if they need it but you also need to put your foot down. I would be locked out if I missed curfew and guess what I knew it was wrong and di it on purpose to stay at friends houses and got in alot of trouble as a kid, but I also had alot of consequences do to the choices I made, which made me learn I can't do whatever I want and I need to follow rules. Sometimes letting them fall on their a** and hit bottom is the best choice. Now I wouldn't lock my child out at 14 but they definitely would be getting punished for their stupid choices. I don't drink or do drugs and don't smoke cigarettes either. So they shouldn't. I'm not being a bad influence. This is why everyone is selfish and does whatever they want and will kill whoever they want, everyone let's their kids get away with everything including murder. Grow the f*ck up. You're not their best friend, and once they know they can get away with everything they will continue to do so

This case outraged every decent Canadian from coast to coast and it's a damn big country. The fact that Karla ( now Debbie ) has 3 children of her own and enjoys a very comfortable life with her spouse is absolutely sickening. She gave back nothing and did not even have to pay by completing her sentence. She was mollycoddled in prison, protected from the chronically over-imprisoned aboriginal/African Canadian prisoners sentenced to twice the time for nowhere near the offenses she committed. Due to the incredibly high profile of her case, nothing could happen to her that would showcase how racist and classist our departments of corrections are. Now she's free, he's still upright and sniffing air, and there are still victims out there who've never received one iota of justice. Their collective crimes victimised this country. The French and Mohaffey families still have to endure their daily devastations. My heart goes out to them, and to their lost daughters.

The cops shouldn't have destroyed the videos. Since when do we destroy evidence? The parents never saw the videos so they don't/can't believe that their daughter is the monster she is. What if she starts killing again and now they won't have that evidence to use against her, which is kinda the point of keeping it! Plus, Karla screwed over our country again with her trying to get a pardon because then our government had to scramble to change the laws to prevent her from getting a clean record... which is good for this case, but bad for a lot of other people who actually do deserve a pardon and can't get one because of her.

that was their fantasy was 'school girls'. I have studied this case A LOT (studied forensics for 3 years in Ontario). Kristen French was a Catholic 'school girl'. Uniform and all. Bernado often made Holmolka dress as a school girl. She enjoyed doing it to make him happy. She, as well as Bernado, is why I support the death penalty. They both deserve to die for what they have done. In all other cases I have studied, I don't support the death penalty (except for a very few exceptions). Alas, the death penalty is no longer an option here in Canada. I often wonder how Holmolka would feel if the things she has done would happen to her children. I would NEVER wish anything to happen to her kids. EVER. But does it give her a new perspective on the things she has done? Her kids are INNOCENT of what she has done. So many kids are taken from parents for so much less. She doesn't deserve to have a happy family when she has caused so much pain to other families.

jackybaby1999 My Mom and I were waiting at the GO train (commuter train) station to pick up my sister. A man walked past our car- cutting across the parking lot. He was maybe 20 feet from us. Both of us reached up and locked our door at the exact same time. We kind of chuckled, but talked about why we did that- what was it about that man that rose the hair on the back of the neck? Within seconds another man came out of the same place the first one- and it’s very unusual for anyone to come from that direction. The first man was very well kept, the second man was scruffy. We talked about why the clean cut one made us wary, but the scruffy one made us feel much safer as he walked by. He was arrested the next day. As soon as we saw his photo on the news , my Mom and I shouted “Oh my God!! THAT’s the Guy from the parking lot!”. The first man was Paul Bernardo, the second one was a cop tailing him. I couldn’t have had a better lesson in trusting your instinct. Still gives me goosebumps.

@Alex what?? I hadn't heard or read that but really, not surprised. I thought t he investigators said her hair was cut because Paul and Karla didn't want carpet fibers from the house being found in her hair.
