I remember a coworker, an immigrant, telling me in the early 1990’s how “safe America is,” unlike Europe; how we never had bombings here. I told him of a book The Awful Lightning, written by Mary Peek about being blinded by a bomb placed in a Minneapolis Minnesota department store bathroom. Granted, it was a rarity to experience something so catastrophic and tragic, but it did happen. That was then…

What really disturbed me about the London cops who investigated this case. They did a lot of complaining about how tedious it was searching video for the culprit and investigating the case as a whole as it relates to the bomb. Isn't it their job for christ sake. American police never do that. American cops view this type of crime as a challenge. Especially since men women and most importantly childrens lives are at stake. I have never seen a case where the cops complained so much for doing what they are paid to do smdh....

In the nid 90s i moved to London for a chef job with my boyfriend .we had to many bags and so when we were in the underground we would move one bag 5 metres and then go and get the other bags and so on .within 20 seconds of doing this we almost caused a bomb scare on the underground. Everyone was so alert to suspicious bags or parcels left unattended because of the IRA. So I'm surprised that people weren't more cautious when they saw the unattended bag. Because those days people did used to live in fear of the IRA

A lot of people commenting can't comprehend how people react when something like this happens. No one thinks they'll ever be in the middle of an event like this. The location wasn't what you might consider a "target". It's not like Brixton is at the forefront of national security. There was no reason to expect something like this. The IRA hadn't been targeting the UK for years, Islamic extremism wasn't the problem it is now back in 1999. I'm not saying any of these people are geniuses, but you're all looking at this with 20/20 hindsight in a completely different time.

In fairness, it is a difficult balancing act because, on the one hand, we don't want to be too nonchalant and just pick up a bag we see lying around somewhere presuming that it's just a harmless bag that someone left or forgot, that would be very foolish and naive, yet, at the same time we don't want to go over the top, cause panic and get a whole street shut down over what might turn out to be just a bag of tools or shopping that someone might have simply forgotten. Not many will thank you for that either. So, where do we draw the line?🤔 Well, that's the problem, nobody really knows, not even the police. Remember, the emergency services will be getting calls all of the time and they have to make a quick judgement as to whether the danger is real or someone just being hysterical, or someone pranking them or if it's the real deal. Someone might call the emergency services when they see a bag on the floor and when the police or possibly bomb disposal experts turn up and it transpires it was just an empty bag or something, they might be made to feel like a fool who has wasted their time, even though it might not be said in so many words. In hindsight, if someone ignores a bag that has been left around or moves it and if it turns out to be an explosive device and someone is injured or killed, people will criticise others and say "Hey, you shouldn't have picked it up and put it over there, you should have just left it and called the police" and "You should have done this" and "You should have done that" etc but that's all with the benefit of the aforementioned hindsight. We all live in the moment, not in hindsight. Remember, it's the terrorists who are to blame, not innocent members of the public who may have been naive, and terrorists only have to be lucky once, we have to be alert ALL the time, 24/7 and realistically, that's actually not possible, so we need to give each other a break and not be so critical of someone who might have done things differently to how you think you would have, you don't really know unless you're in that exact moment and that exact situation. Thanks.

Your mind boggles because you have the benefit of HINDSIGHT. You're seeing this AFTER 9/11 happened, AFTER 7/7 happened, AFTER numerous other attacks. The only thing people had dealt with back then was the IRA, they would almost always call in a warning to the area and the police would evacuate without the public finding anything. Context matters. The context you are seeing this through now is completely different to the context of the time.

Not mentioned, the Brick Lane police station was closed. Ergo, the chap with the bomb in his boot couldn't get police attention prior to that explosion. I had been on the phone with my little brother, who lived in Brixton when the first one detonated. I witnessed/experienced and reacted to the Admiral Hardy incident. Had never had to use an eyeliner to mark tourniquet times in my first aid training. Improvisation was the order of march that terrible evening. Horrendous injuries. It still lives in my memory and always will. 18 years later, the Manchester Concert Bombing killed my cousin. Fourth time unlucky, I guess.

The bomb in Brixton has a strange sub plot. Opposite the Iceland store eye witness said they saw people on the roof taking photos of the street below. This was a couple of minutes before the blast. This was touched on in the crimewatch programme shortly after the bombing. Jill Dando seems to have realised its significance on camera, but this information was never taken any further..she was killed that weekend. Now, the building i have talked about has a strange sculpture placed on it. Its a fox and a couple of cherries. This was not part of any remembrance and if you ask locals most were not even aware of it, it seems to have been erected overnight at some point. As for the bomber... he wore the same white baseball cap whilst placing each bomb. Making himself very visible even on the small amount of cameras of the time.. In my opinion theres more to this, suggesting other players in this case. The 2 red flags being the people on the rooftop taking pictures prior to the blast and the white baseball cap.. a basic intelligence technique used to track their own people in crowded and urban areas. As for Jill Dando... maybe she was assassinated because she knew too much. It has as much validity as all the other mooted reasons.

Then people started running . My AZ London map book got blown down the rd. very quickly police were there Trying to cordon off the area. I didn’t know it was the ADMIRALTY PUB. . I wouldn't open someone else's abandoned bag.And if you do open it, and there are clocks, nails and wires there, is it so much fun to stay there, touch it and discuss it with passers-by? Just get on your feet and call the police.

Let's not forget, in 1999 the Good Friday peace agreement was in its' infancy, and te provisional IRA had only bombed Omagh they year before. London had been attacked by the provisional for two decades at this time, and londoners were absolutely aware of the bomb threat which existed in London. That makes the entire response to this bomb such a peculiar incident. These people behaved very strangely for residents of a city which had been targeted with bombs for two decades.

"I ran up the police and I said 'There's an explosive over there!' and he got his notebook out and asked 'what's your name and address?'" One minute later: "The metropolitan police had been given no warning". Yes, I know what they mean, but really? "What's your name and adress".??? REALLY???

I'm completely amazed at the behaviour of the public. Especially since they were experienced with bomb threats because of the IRA bombing campaign. You would have thought that they'd take a suspected bomb a little bit more seriously. Instead they were moving the bombs from here to there.,crowding around the bag, even disbelieving that there could be a bomb. The Tesco manager should be ashamed of himself that he allowed his customers to approach the bomb just because he didn't believe that it was real. I remember in those days we were all taught to be vigilant and treat every unattended bag as suspicious. There were literally posters and announcements at every bus stop and underground station because of the IRA bombs.

Imagine being told there is a bomb sat in a busy marketplace and people decide to gather around it looking at it and nobody moving when told to get away. Regardless of what year it was in, if there's a device that looks like one and people are refusing to move, then what more can you do? I don't know what goes through peoples heads when they decide to stand around it. Imagine if the cop and the shopkeeper actually thought for a second. I can't understand people sometimes.

How they should've acted: "EVERYONE, THERE'S A BOMB!!! STAY AWAY FROM IT AND DON'T GET ANY CLOSER!!!" How they actually acted: "Oh, is that a bomb? Looks like I would have to inform others about my unexpected discovery in typical english manner... Excuse me, lady! I'm sorry to bother you but there is a bomb-looking object sitting in the middle of the road. Please stay away from it... Excuse me, mister! Sorry for bothering you at such time, but we strongly suspect there is a bomb in the area, so please go the other way..."

yes, yes, yes. they all acted foolishly. However, the fact that the police were able to pick the guy out in 1999 CCTV! Amazeballs! those folks are the very beginning of what the Brits now call super recognizers. leave it to the British to find specific jobs for one’s specific talent, even something not thought of as a talent is a talent! I believe every culture and every country can learn from this type of celebration in one’s potential. Every human being would be able to have a job if the world operated this way. Every human being can do some thing super well that no one else can possibly do.

The authority figures don't take it seriously, I'm not surprised neither did the shee... public. Why it takes something to actually happen before authorities take things seriously (stalking, bullying also) is a mystery to me 😮😊

These fascists and nazis are still there. The BNPs vote collapsed and they never recovered from that. Plus the antics of Griffin and various other creepoids within the party ensured they were never going to do much beyond getting stuck in court for inciting racial hatred. They are still committed their warped ideology. I don't think it's much of a reach to look at the rhetoric of the Tory party to see where some of their policies are stolen from and who they appear to.
