With the invention of the internet, phones with cameras, and data plans - everyone has the ability to share every aspect of their lives. Nowadays people are going overboard with trying to make it big on social media by posting literally everything they do. From day in my life videos, the shenanigans they get up to at work, even down to things that would get lawyers involved. Everyone wants a piece of that sponsor money pie from brand deals and internet clout. What happened to secrets and keeping your personal life private? No one’s going outside anymore to experience the real world - and all their coherent thoughts are coming from bad Twitter takes and Reddit forums. Tiktok and Instagram are creating a new breed of content creators that think publishing one's life story for strangers to see is a totally normal thing to do. Back in the day, we would share things with 3 to 6 people max. The Chronically Online Generation - Over Sharing is Bad #edvasian

Yeah, the advent of "cringe compilations" for people doing things that aren't even that cringey, but were just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time for someone to randomly decide to film them against their will or without their consent for online clout has spiked my social anxiety.

I was 4 months pregnant at the beach and I realized I needed to put more money in the parking meter. As I was feeding the money in, a group of guys in a truck came up laughing and filming me. The one said I was a "10/10" (obviously being dumb. I'm pretty average with a big nose and my belly was a little bigger than normal.) I was very flustered and a little scared. I just muttered "thanks" will clutching my belly and turned away from them. Every time I think about it I feel a little sick. Who knows where that video went. I'm a pretty private person and having a video of me being sweaty, flustered, and pregnant out there is just... disgusting.

@gingeralice3858 it's perfectly valid for a therapist to specialize in certain areas and not be comfortable doing others. people in a certain field don't have to do everything. also, just because she did not do that doesn't mean she had a better life than you. maybe she even had it worse and hearing trauma like that would have triggered her, so she can only do certain types of therapy. you simply don't know everyone's life story 🤷🏻‍♀️

As a disabled person, if you see me struggling, please offer assistance if you feel able! I’m perfectly capable of saying “No, I’m okay, thanks for offering!” But I might really need help. The other day I was at the doctors surgery and an entire waiting room full of people watched me struggle on crutches with a stuck automatic door until I had to go get a member of staff to help me. Nobody owes me help, but please don’t think it’s rude to offer! Not all disabled people are born disabled, not everyone has had time to find ways to adapt. Especially in the case of degenerative illness, it’s not always possible to adapt fast enough, and for every disabled person who might be offended, there will be another that’s silently wishing someone would offer a hand. It’s not offensive to be compassionate.

Back when covid was a thing a friend of mines partner didnt want to get the shot because of a severe heart condition that she had and was recommended to not get one from her doctor. After several months of being denied for an exemption (causing her a lot of distress) she eventually got it because she didnt want to lose her job, and she then posted about it on facebook (after months of also posting on facebook about being very nervous of getting it). About a week later her husband was at my place for beers and i asked him how she was doing and if she was ok considering how nervous she was about getting the jab. He had no clue what i was talking about and so i told him she posted on facebook about getting the jab. Turns out she had blocked her own husband from her facebook and had not told him at all. Shortly after he told her he knew because she posted it all over facebook, to which she then responded to making another post on facebook saying whoever told him needs to mind their own business and stop trying to interfere with her relationship. A bunch of people commented saying that whoever told him needs to get a life and all kinds of other nasty stuff. She still doesnt know it was me who mentioned it to him (out of concern for her mental state). Seriously who the hell blocks their own husband on facebook? Some people just are desperate to play the victim at any cost.

A friend of mine defended those nurses, saying that they should get to complain about work like everyone else. The difference in this situation is these women are putting their lives in your hands, they are trusting you to help them through one of the most difficult times in their lives. The last thing they need to be thinking about is their nurse judging them when they are at their worst. And that’s putting aside that you are a healthcare professional and need to recognize WHY there are confidentiality rules in place. You might not have broken them, but you are missing the reason why they were created Edit: I get that nurses and doctors are human too, and being able to express you problems are perfectly reasonable BUT like I said not on a huge public platform. I handle people’s confidential information in my job and yeah it’s not an awesome time, but I’m not going to go into detail about it online EVER. I don’t want anyone coming into my workplace nervous about being there more than they already are.

I have a bunch of random private accounts with zero followers that I just use to store pictures and videos since I don't wanna pay for more storage on my phone. Other than that, I don't post pictures of myself on my social media and while I might talk about my issues, I've stopped documenting all my life on like. Instagram or something like when I was 13. I use those accounts purely for storage and nothing else, I have an account for my art or my interests or literally whatever I want where I post what I want and take breaks when I want. And I don't feel guilty for not being active all the time cause I have a life. Honestly being less online has improved my mental state so much. Even with KZbin, I'll turn it off and just put on Spotify because I don't wanna hear whatever's going on in the world right now that I can't control. I feel so free like no. I don't have to let this glass rectangular prism control my life I can just not look at it.

@@rainingwhenidie you may have them set to private but social media companies have access & store all those pics. I mean, a fair bit of it also came to be because of things like facebook where youre *encouraged* to overshare about your life. Theres a good overlap between those that grew up during the time when sharing every bit of personal information online was the new trendy thing, and the adults that now film themselves doing and saying everything. I could definitely see the nurses being from that generation. And then twitter and tumblr kinda making it cool to just say whatever is on your mind again for the younger people. The difference is just that you can hide your identity on twt/tumblr by choosing a random name and pfp, but you cant hide your identity on tiktok when you film your face, job position, and location. And I think a lot of young people forget that theyre not anonymous on tiktok like they are on the other platforms.. So I don't think its necessarily loneliness/attention seeking.. More so just that youre *encouraged* to overshare ?

It's also scary how much it's a multi generational problem. Like I'm not surprised by the kids that have literally been born into it and the ones that grew up with it but the grown ass adults, middle aged and older that also complain about said kids and how much better it was in the past without social media while posting is wild. Also so many parents that are obviously posting their kids for attention and to humiliate them for clout for themselves is really sad where as if their kid did the same they'd get their phone taken and be punished.

Our weapon was knowing what we had to do and what they couldn't demand without serious consequences for them. But as someone who has a family: sometimes you have to choose if you want to keep a job that you don't like very much to provide for yourself and your family or do what you want. For me the most concerning part about the oversharing trend is that it creates an illusion that unless you are a 100% honest about every aspect of your life, you are somehow "bad" or "problematic". People should not have to share sensitive information like health or financial information to be taken seriously by people. Sure if you are not actively making money off of something or impacting other people's lives through your actions, you really should not be expected to tell people your entire life story for no reason.

Last week my sister got super mad at me for suggesting her friend shouldn't post her underage clubbing on her public instagram. She insisted that nobody who was looking at her instagram would care - but that isn't the point. The point is that somebody who cares (i.e. potential jobs, colleges) COULD go looking, and the won't like what they see. I'm less concerned about her going out when she's only 17, as long as she has somebody responsible with her, than I am about the consequences of her posting that online. I'm only a few years older than my sister, but I wasn't a teenager when TikTok started to get popular, and I deleted it as soon as I realised I was spending more than an hour at a time on it - while she still is a teenager, and has spent the past three years fully submerged in that online culture. @@NightmaresWonderland it's because a lot of people pursue jobs that they know will get them social respect and will put them in a position of power over others. They use the job to feed their ego and maintain their delusions of grandeur. You see this especially often, and incredibly concerningly, amongst PSWs who work with old people and disabled people who can't self advocate. They love the feeling of power that they get from knowing another person relies on them and is vulnerable. Even if they don't abuse that power dynamic, some get off on just knowing that they could. There's also a lot of people who go into careers like nursing just because that's what their family expects from them and not because they actually care about the job. I also thought it was evident fairly quickly that employers were using social media to screen their potential hires, since social media tells you a lot more about a person than their resume.

Back in the early days of FB becoming the dominant social media platform, I remember walking into an office full of supervisors, and they were huddled around a monitor, critiquing the FB page contents of someone they'd interviewed that day. I was like, "You guys actually do that?" I told them that I didn't think it was fair for them to make a hiring decision based on someone's FB activity (especially since, in this case, the candidate was fresh out of college, and there were unnecessary remarks made regarding his appearance and his girlfriend). Fast forward to the present day, and I understand why an employer would take certain social media content into consideration when making a hiring decision (ESPECIALLY TikTok!). It may provide valuable insight into the maturity level of the candidate or give you an idea if they can be trusted with sensitive company/ customer information.

Health care system should have some kind of psychological exam to enter the career. I'm convinced that the majority of "Angels of death" are actually this mean spirited people who are also nurses and doctors.

People just need to middle-school-counselor-social-media-education-style ask “why am i posting this? What am i hoping to gain from people seeing this?” Like, yesterday I was upset at boss being difficult, and i kept almost making a story post complaining, but i thought, “what would i gain from people seeing that? Validation for my frustration? Why do i need that? Can’t I just be frustrated and get over it on my own?” not everything needs to be posted…

I'm very much guilty of the oversharing on Close Friends (instagram story) but since it's never about anything confidential, I don't think too much of it? Like as an autistic kid, I can't really gauge what's socially acceptable to say all the time, and sometimes, I _know_ something I do is weird and don't care bc ik my friend group are the only ppl who see it, and they find it fine I'm absolutely chronically online, and ik it isn't great, but I think as long as you respect the boundaries of others, respect yourself, and don't post about your damn job (omg like u would think that that rule would be obvious to someone who is literally employed, especially ppl well into adulthood but I GUESS NOT), internet-ing can be manageable. Like bro we can work towards the minimizing screentime gradually. As long as you're touchin' grass and grounding yourself in reality, leave the unachievable recommended screentime amount be 😭 you'll get there when you get there. Baby steps, man. Edit: talking about the general definition of chronically online - the people pictured in this video aren't JUST chronically online, they're either actively doing messed up things and just happen to be broadcasting it, or sharing exceedingly personal information (which is very much unsafe and unhealthy!)
@hotsexyangel

You can’t just admit to being “chronically online” and then say “yea it’s fine just be cautious” ??? you literally just admitted that u don’t know boundaries lmao. @magnificloud
@magnificloud Жыл бұрын
@hotsexyangel I should clarify - when I say "weird" I don't mean criminal, or hyperpersonal. The internet is *not* my diary. I just mean info-dumping about psychology and TV shows and stuff like that. When I say chronically online, I mean the hard definition of being online an excessive amount - not posting incessantly, and NOT to the degree of what's in this video. I'm not saying being chronically online is great; I'm not encouraging this. I'm just saying that it's a common but MANAGEABLE issue that a lot of people deal with, and that going of the internet cold turkey rarely works.

I had a baby last spring, and let me tell you when I saw those nurses complaining about patients it only made me want to become a nurse even more because clearly there’s a lack of nurturing in the field. Although I had an amazing experience at the hospital! And it was a very mixed staff, they were all extremely nice to me. I bet those nurses were like in a city or something where they’re super overwhelmed all the time. It’s not an excuse but adds context. I can’t lie, I did feel for them a little bit losing their jobs over something so stupid

As someone who has been chronically online, and who is disabled. The general rule is to ALWAYS ASK. That's the rule--ableism comes in when people just manhandle you like a child because it is assumed you cannot do any independent tasks purely based on disability. The ableism is the infantilization and forced help. But if you offer help or ask if someone would like help, that's literally fine. Just don't take away agency and you are good. And for the words like "Stupid" and "dumb" being ableist--yeah they got ableist histories, but it is mostly an issue when those words are used towards disabled people to imply they are unintelligent because of, or to shame them for disability. Mostly comes from educational spaces, or people describing others who are disabled with ignorance and ingrained ableism from our society. But yeah, honestly--those are the last things I am gonna fight on atm. As a disabled person, both mentally and physically disabled, I think it's more important we get rights and protections, and that discourse over specifics in language can be heavily debated later. In general, I would just ask people what terms they prefer and try to respect them and their disabled lives. ✌

These babies be posting everything about themselves and even purposely going for those outrage views just for clout. It pains me.

Instead of blasting all over social media that my boyfriend doesn't wash his ass, I would simply stop dating him and talk shit about him privately to my friends. Y'know, like a normal person? And then maybe tweet something like, "I used to date a guy who didn't use soap. Ew" and be done with it. I wouldn't post a whole ass video showing his face. She quit for unrelated reasons sometime afterwards (everything was all good between them), then when she tried to get a job at a different Waffle House, she found out she had been blacklisted.
