kohen or cohen,was very common surname in Lithuania,in hebrew -priest,Leonard Cohen,Sasha Baron Cohen....The modern world is simply bursting with the fame of notable Litvaks and their descendants. Those for whom fortune smiled, that is, those who were unsuccessful here and emigrated before the war. Bob Dylan, knocking at Heaven’s door; Philip Glass the composer whose works seem to be included in every third Hollywood film now; Scarlett Johansson with whom about a third of the men of Lithuania have secretly fallen in love; director Michel Hazanavicius whose “Artist” [2011] recently took the most important Oscar; Sasha Baron Cohen, or Borat; Harrison Ford; Pink; and J. D. Salinger-yes, the same Salinger who gave the world “Catcher in the Rye,” read by millions of thinking youths around the world. And these are only the contemporary artists whose names are impossible to ignore. And all those famous politicians, economists, Israeli prime ministers and mayors of New York City-they are all from that small portion of Litvaks who managed to get out, so we can only imagine what gigantic unfulfilled intellectual and artistic potential lies buried in our ground. Leonard Cohen is also from here. You must surely have heard his love ballad, “Dance Me to the End of Love,” and perhaps you have even danced to this song. If not, give it a listen. It turns out it’s about our Jews from Eišiškės [Eyshishok, Ejszyszki] in detention waiting to be brought out and shot:

It's funny to find out now that I've been there, their main bridge had even red cloth threads and going through them was like walking through an endless red curtain only to end up in the other side. I had no idea the place was a "republic", just an artist neighbourhood. Nice video btw ;)

This neighborhood definitely fit the World Towning family. Jessica, I have wondered for a while if you any time to spend on art. I would think it would be hard to have such an artistic soul, but no time or space for expression.
@WorldTowning
@WorldTowning 5 жыл бұрын
Joan I have so many interests in life I could never get bored. I expressed my artistic side through a Graphic Design career for 20 years, now through photography and some other outlets. But, yes I don't have a lot of time for other expression, however I am ok with that as this is the phase of life I am in right now and I am so loving this phase. My kids will not be young and with me forever and I want to soak up every moment of it. Now is now. I do miss reading daily though and I envision the first year both kids are in uni I will do nothing but read. We read to the kids everyday, but that is a bit different. Thanks for asking, great question.

@@WorldTowning These countries just want to run away from the bad rep the term Eastern European carries, especially in Western European countries who suffered from illegal immigration and criminal activities. This term is not based on the geographical location of the country but the history of being under the USSR rule when Europe was divided into East and West. So it is not a wrong term and it is historically accurate even if some people dislike it. They are Northern European countries geographically (even though you will find some claims that Lithuania is the midpoint of Europe) and Eastern Europe historically, so don't mind the triggered people.

That was the USSR from 1945. The previous one was Poland. Poles constitute 23% of the population in the Vilnius district. It was Stalin who moved the boundaries. The situation is similar in Lviv in Ukraine. The Polish national poem "Pan Tadeusz" begins with words. "Lithuania, my country! You are as good health: How much one should prize you, he only can tell Who has lost you. Your beauty and splendour I view And describe here today, for I long after you."
