I do think that when One Piece ends Oda will semi-retire from manga. He's in his mid 40's but he's been writing One Piece throughout his childhood and teenage years. So this is his life's work which is why he's been able to make it every week for over 2 decades without suffering burnout. But once it's over I don't think he'll make anything major. Financially he's set for life and his name is already immortal as one of the greatest mangaka's of all time. I think he will do occasional one-shots or short stories from time to time when inspiration hits him. But nothing more.

Getting pretty tired of stories where the premise is "Jimmy lives in a world of wizards/heroes/also wizards/ninjas/etc. but he can't do the same things as them so instead he becomes better than them at everything". Glad to hear there are stories actually ENDING however. Feels like for a while Japanese authors and publishers had no idea how to bring series to a close so they just dragged on and on.

I call this the "Naruto Effect", mas many young authors have been influenced by Naruto growing up. The main issues are many new authors lack the talent to write compelling narratives and characters. Other issue is the lack of patience. Naruto was a long running series, and although it had its issues, i think it benefited from this, as Kishimoto had the time setup the story arcs and develop everything, so the emotional bits would pay off. In this fast paced and super competitive era, the new shounes seens to be on mach speed, rushing every arc and character development just to ensure viewers wouldn't get bored. Its hard to care about anything when the story doesn't itselft doesn't slow down to show things. Naruto became a template for a new generation of mangas, and after many copycats, it became so twisted it became a parody of itself - to the point every new shounen became predictable and characters would often get compared to Naruto and Sasuke. This phenomenon ia not different from the Hokuto no Ken clones from the 80's, even JoJo started as one.

I like how Demon Slayer ended the way the author wanted it to end, before the hype train got a little too out of control. Look at the big three. Two of them ran far longer than they should have, leaving a weak ending or weak middle. Demon Slayer isn't going to run forever. It won't burn out its author. It won't run until it's a shell of itself. It told a story, and a good story at that. Dragging a story out forever means you run the risk of making the overall story seem weak. You have to constantly introduce new obstacles for characters to overcome. Instead of having a conclusion, you prolong the characters struggles until sales start to fall.

My comments: I think manga story-telling has outgrown the weekly format and needs to change just based on writer's health or time needed to write a more engaging/ground breaking story. I think Ghost Writer getting canned gave the impression of "don't look behind the curtain or at how awful living is in this profession". A story like that would prolly have done well in anything else but Jump IMO. Build King not doing well doesn't shock me because I always felt Shimabukuro had neat ideas in manga but follow-through was always weak... Toriko is a good example of "neat idea but bad execution". I feel writers ending their stories on their own terms (like Demon Slayer) needs to happen more. I hope Yusei's new series does well and while I like Yabuki's art style and paneling I'm strongly not a fan of his slow shift into more ecchi titles afer Black Cat's run. Love your work and getting a moment to hear someone talk an language on manga I understand is always welcomed into my life.

The world of anime and manga is going to be utterly transformed in a few years anyway. Most people do not see it coming at all, because of how niche the technology is right now. But there's a new field where computers and neuroscience is being combined, to create brain computer interfaces. (Kernel Flux and Flow are the state of the art right now). Soon artists will be able to transfer their art to a computer merely by wearing a helmet and thinking about what they want to draw. What do you think will happen when it is possible to produce an entire anime episode and multiple manga chapters within a single day? It's gonna be chaos!

@@danielrodrigues4903 Kernel Flux monitors real time brain activity rather than reading and being able to act on what that information means. @@TheClearSummer Oh hey, someone who's heard of Kernel! Didn't expect to see that here! :D And of course, Kernel Flux/Flow will just be the medium, they will only monitor and display brain activity. They won't be the ones transforming your thoughts to pictures. But that's why we have machine learning/deep learning. AI has come really far in generating media (StyleGan2 being the best example). Once we start receiving high quality brain data from these BCIs, it's only a matter of time until all those rich datasets are fed to algorithms that will be trained to interpret them. A professor in a futurist forum gave his thoughts about Kernel Flow last year, and mentioned that perhaps generating pictures that someone was thinking could be possible. (link removed) The CEO of Kernel himself responded in that thread, providing further affirmative remarks, saying that most people were underestimating Flow. (link removed) Considering that Flux is even more powerful, I think it's possible that Thought-To-Image at the very least will be here by around 2025 to 2030. P.S.: KZbin isn't allowing me to post this comment with the links in, so I took them out. If you want to see the post, google "kernel flow futuretimeline" it is the very first result on the page.

@@danielrodrigues4903 Interesting stuff, for sure! I'm actually a psychology student (although admittedly I don't particularly specialise in neuroscience), so to some degree I've always been a little skeptical because of how complex the brain is and how very little we still understand of it (a lot of that is technological limitations though, for sure). And while we can already use machines to understand motor movement as well, I am a little skeptical as to how well this technology can understand abstract thought, and how hyperspecific neuron activations get to represent those thoughts, and how an algorithm can interpret it. I think you're absolutely right and doubtless a combination of real time renditions of literally every neuron firing ever combined with algorithms to monitor the patterns behind activations will speed up our understanding hugely, it's just that I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be much harder for humans to interpret the high quality brain data we have in order to set up the initial foundation of understanding that algorithms can operate on. Just because we have good data doesn't mean we have the capacity to use or understand it. Of course, I might be just a bit too skeptical - but the way I see it our current scientific methods and approaches which try to understand variables in isolation is VERY much unsuited to understanding complex, interacting, changing networks like the brain, which is always processing, interpreting, thinking, and actually changing, with the environment through multiple modes and interfaces. Even if we can capture what is physically happening, I think trying to understand, empirically prove and establish the relationship between certain areas and its activation to XYZ, and then to map this into our understanding of the brain as an entire structure, is a huge feat not to be underestimated. Not to mention the fact that relationships between the brain and behaviour are never straight forward. I actually feel like the brain is something which can perhaps only be understood by a computer, ironically, and not another brain. But then we enter into a bit of a deadlock, since the computer will rely on the human to kick start its learning process, but it's the human who will most probably get stuck. That said, I'm probably also underestimating how many people are working on the subject and furthering the field and our understanding all the time. But I do think it's worth recognising just how monumental a task it is even to begin trying to understand the brain. A neuroscience professor at my university who went on to the BBC had his interview cut when he tried to say that we currently only understand 1% of the brain, haha. But like I said, I'm not a particularly neurosciency person, so there are probably lots of people out there who are a lot more informed about the brain than me and who think otherwise. Thanks for sharing the links though! This has been pretty interesting!

judging by the 2021 mid-point manga industry sales you're going to have an interesting time... 1. Demon Slayer is still riding high with 26m units sold between November 2020 and May 2021, unlikely to match its ABSURD figures from the previous year, but still selling at an absurd rate. 2. Jujutsu Kaisen is chasing it with an impressive 24m units sold in the same period. having more than doubled its total sales figure since the stellar anime adaptation debuted. 3. in a VERY distant 3rd place is Tokyo Revengers with around 5m units, having also been boosted by the arrival of its anime adaptation 4. Attack on Titan capitalised on Season 4 and Manga ending hype to sell a solid 4.5m 5. Chainsaw Man remains on the rise with an impressive 4m units sold. 6. 7. and 8. consist of Promised Neverland, My Hero Academia and Haikyuu, in that order. all hovering around the 3m mark. which is pretty solid and consistent with the figures they've been setting, they're staying steady. and 9th place is... Kingdom. with 2.6m units sold.... Notice something missing? No? 10th place is ONE PIECE... with 2.5m units sold.... It was weird enough not seeing One Piece as the top-seller for a year... now it's TENTH?

(5th and 6th being Chainsaw Man and Haikyu respectively (Not sure what the last 4 series in the top 10, though one of them has to be a newer series)) Thus the King of Manga has been unequivocally been torn from it's throne. So Jump seems to desperately be looking for something for Shiro Usazaki (Act-AGE Artist) to do. She hasn't expressed an interest in writing her own series and seems content to just be the artist. She's young (Like 23) and her art is too beautiful to go to waste. I really hope they pair her with a story worthy of her talents. She did the art for a one shot but sadly the art was the only good thing about it. Act-Age was my favourite SJ title and it really sucks the author was a garbage human. Shiro Usazaki deserved better.

I love these yearly videos! Looking forward to seeing what series rises in Jump! Also at this point, Togashi should just find an artist for HxH and focus only on the story. Maybe then we can finally get a new chapter this year.
