The Curse of Tarkov Audio (and other lies we tell ourselves) || Getting Tarkoved
This video is about Tarkov’s audio and the Tarkov community. I’ll be discussing the history of Tarkov’s audio and the current state of sound in the game today, summarizing the game’s audio architecture, the aspects that are handled by Unity, the aspects that are handled by BSG, and the latest addition to the EFT’s audio - Steam Audio.
Topics include audio bugs like ghost sounds, silent footsteps, silent grenades, silent gunshots, invisible scavs, desync and netcode, cheaters, why sound on stairs is so broken along with different floors, what binaural sound is and how it works, and more. It also discusses the perception skill and active headphones, and explains what 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound is, what Dolby Atmos, Windows Sonic, and Sonic Studio are, audio compression, how they work, and if you should use them for Tarkov.
Lastly, it focuses on the Tarkov community, the fantastic content creators within it, including myself, who often get things wrong or don’t fully understand different topics or concepts, and how misinformation, rumors, and misconceptions can so easily spread.
This video is ultimately about truth, how we can know what is true, and not only what we believe to be true, but why.
Check out all of the fantastic content creators I discuss in this video!

NO FUCKING WAAAAAAAY DUDE!!! I watched your first vid and thought I deleted everything. I was sure of it. Your info is great so of course I watched this. So basically to make a long story short, Use binural audio/steam audio. Make sure you're sound settings aren't being fucked with by weird programs and use stereo whatever. Stay away from stairs. Pay attention to randomly loud noises (specifically their directions) i.e. voice lines, footsteps, gunshots ect... _It's always the games fault that we die_ And have a healthly amount of skepticism towards anything and everything, including this comment.

Thanks for this video man I can't fathom the amount of hours that went into this. Sat down and listened to this while writing a script and honestly changed my outlook on alot of things in the game. @@Huskmini people especially nowadays expect everything to be consendesed for them, and if it isn't they ignore it and continue to act like they are authorities on whatever they want. the windows sonic comparison is really weird to me, i'm not a developer or anything but i have played around with windows sonic's api and as far as i can tell it doesn't activate any sound processing for any stream in stereo, it only applies processing for 5.1 and 7.1 audio stream processes or software directly calling for sonic's api, most of the time it's running even when you have it disabled as it allows for enabling it while audio is streaming causing just a few ms of audio loss while it redirects surround audio streams through the api and applies the processing. windows even has a notification on the sound flyout that triggers whenever the sonic api is running audio streams through it, be it surround or sonic itself, my own test showed tarkov not triggering sonic's api in any way and as far as i can tell my ears didn't hear anything out of the ordinary even when enabling it mid game. sonic's api isn't something like a normal headphone software that applies general sound processing to simulate surround for stereo audio, but rather a downsampler and virtualizer of audio streams above stereo, it also runs independent of other audio streams on the system, so if you run a surround game and a youtube video for example none of the virtualization and processing like reverberation transfers to the youtube video

58:00 I have had NO problem getting word through to devs for bugs. I reported a weird graphical glitch in the launcher. Just a weird swirly glitch from the "loading" animation lingering. Posted a private video on youtube to share with them and such and they got back with me relatively fast (within 12 hours of initial bug report sent) and then had the issue whatever it was fixed a couple days later. Completely irrelevant. Useless ass bug that really didnt do anything, But they jumped to fix it. If the rest of the team acts this way I cannot complain. People just need to take the time to "do it right" and not make "wild claims" without Real - Useful - Evidence.

@designator7402
@designator7402 2 жыл бұрын
There's also the matter of ease of fixing. I feel like sometimes people, given the benefit of the doubt that they reported it properly and everything, expect bugs to be fixed within days, like yours has been. Sometimes... stuff is just multi-layered, and even a good bug report won't give the proper data a developer needs to fix it. Some bugs are simple enough, just something that hasn't come up in testing. Other times it's an arcane clusterfuck of hard- and software coming together to make your life hell. I know this first hand. In the one game I actually released into the wild I had ONE report of a game breaking bug. It happened for one person on specific hardware, and they could replicate it consistently, but I couldn't, nor could any of the volunteers I asked to check it out. Still haven't fixed that bug to this day. Don't know what causes it, can't figure it out. Now I'm just a single person and there have been maybe a few dozen people who've played the game. But even with a major team and a lot of players and reports... some stuff is just obscure and will take a while to figure out.

Now I can just have them watch this video to see where their problem may lie, at least for now. Also, any time you do a large video like this, I get excited for playing Tarkov again. Keep up the superb work, V.

Went through my settings and the sound and the way it actually "just works" now. The new sounds actually made me physically sick thinking about what I had been listening to. Literally have been handicapped my whole playtime. Godspeed Veritas.

Thanks Veritas for all that you have done for the community and for me. I would think I am somewhat a Chad and I owe that solely to you. I learnt so much about this game in the beginning and throughout my time playing it because of you....you made this game fun and you made me a actual contender because of it. Love your app and videos, please keep making content...I watch all you release.

Great video. I also like the Binaural "performance hit" point people had been talking about. All I could think when people mentioned it, was something along the lines of "yeah disabling all gun models in the game would improve performance as well probably, but it's kind of a vital part of the game experience."

The reason you are able to hear a floor under you while laying down on the ground is because there is most likely an overlap capsule around the player's character, and when you lay down the game recognizes that your character is overlapping with the volume underneath you. I also noticed that between floors in Tarkov has no actual dimension - the floors are essentially 0 pixels/units thin - which obviously doesn't help this issue. They should be able to fix this quite easily though, tbh. They just need to check if the actual character is overlapping with that volume, not the surrounding overlap capsule - and they need to fix the floors so they have actual width between the levels.

Wow, what a well thought out video! Insane that all three hours had legitimate info and thoughts. I feel more well versed in how things work. I will say that while I didn't notice much of a difference with binaural/steam in regards to stairs, direction, and occlusion...I noticed that with binaural I hear shots and they sound more like clipping and I also tend to hear more random scav voices for just a brief second. I found it hard to gauge distance because of the clipping in shots. I also only ran it for a few days just to test. I liked how directional the binaural audio was, I felt I knew the exact direction someone was at quicker than with normal audio. With the normal audio it sounds more "he's in this area" vs "he's in this exact spot". They both seen to have pros and cons, I just couldn't get used to the clipping/buggy sounds I was hearing with binaural. I'm wondering if I was missing some sort of update on my end (if that's a thing) and would love to try it again if that were the case! Again, excellent video man! (Sorry for the long message)

I actually set up a compressor at one point because I started to get tinnitus from the audio spiking so high - I have since replaced that with a set of decibel limited headphones, which work better anyway since they do it much more cleanly and seamlessly.

Holy shit dude thank you so much!! I had noticed around 5~6 months ago my audio just didn't sound right, it sounded like the audio at 1:16:36. Around that time I had bought a new mouse and both my old headset and new mouse use iCUE Corsair's Device management software. I never had it installed until I bought the mouse and for whatever reason you CANNOT DISABLE whatever the software did to make it sound like it did at 1:16:36. I uninstalled the software went back to my old mouse because the side buttons dont work without the software running, but I can hear again. Another banger of a video, thank you for the time and dedication to the community!

This video should be watched by every gamer that has complained about audio, Veritas made this video so we understand how audio in games work and why it can have issues. Not only just for Tarkov I can only imagine how much time and effort was put into this video. I want to also add that I DID WATCH THE FULL 3HRS AT ONCE, just had to pee a few times :) amazing video without a doubt, I feel like I have such a better understanding on how the game audio works and that some times that game desyncs so some audio might be missing.
