years ago, in the mid 00s, i went to a car show and was talking to a guy with an NSX. It had all kinds of scratches and a few dents and the seats were tore a little. I asked him about it all and he said he drove it every single day (weather permitting) with his dog. He'd take it to get small groceries, to the beach, wherever. He said "cars are meant to be driven, that's literally their purpose." and i'll never forget that. Drive your car. Take care of your car, but drive it. It's literally their purpose.

Had this same experience, but this was just last year. I talked to an older gentleman who brought his 2007 Lotus Exige, apparently it was 1 of 1 for his model year. And he drove everyday! In the winter, in the summer, in rain, ice, anything! Cuz that was his daily driver, and he said the exact same quote to me when I was surprised. "Well, I bought this car to drive it, and that's exactly what I'm gonna do until the wheels fall off this thing." I have real respect for those kinds of people.

I'm a firm believer in buying the car you want and enjoying it till the wheels fall off. I don't own a crazy car, just a 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited. I drive about 100 miles per day for work, and I've had countless people tell me to buy a beater. And while yes, my front end is sandblasted with rock chips at 50k miles, I've enjoyed the crap out of my car. I figure if I'm getting that much seat time, I may as well enjoy it. It's currently JB4 tuned with an intake, BOV, and wheels. Might seem stupid to some, but I love my car and fully intend to keep enjoying it for years to come. Having just picked up my IS 500 as a "daily" (though I work from home, so it's more of an errand car), I definitely vibe with this. Everyone and their mother is telling me to "get PPF, get ceramic coat, wax your wheels, get all-weather mats" and the list goes on. While I plan to do some of those things, namely PPF, I also want to accept that it is gonna get messy. I plan to keep this thing for years and am under no delusions that it'll look the same at 50,000 miles as it did at 50 miles. Some people buy cars to keep them in the garage and eventually sell them, but I plan to enjoy mine. I like that you enjoy yours, too, even though it is an enviable car.

I think the difference is the people who say these types of comments most likely won't own a Pagani or a multi-million dollar Ferrari, so if someone "ruins it" by driving it in the winter, that doesn't affect them, but they might one day own a Civic Type R and seeing you "ruin" a brand new example by driving it in the winter means they won't be able to find a perfect condition car and will have to settle for one with rock chips on it and other imperfections that come with winter.

The daily driver paradox became more clear to me when I drove my daily driven 1987 Toyota Cressida up to Ontario, and realized how dirty the car was getting the farther up I got. I vow never to drive in New York again in something nice with the reasonless aggression people have. As much as I would love to drive my Cressida across the country seven times a year, I can't fathom losing it, or having to replace everything under it. The car isn't perfect whatsoever, but it's original to the point I don't want to be replacing panels or subframes because of corrosion or one of the texters or other stupid people slamming into my car. I'll hopefully be working towards a GR86 or GR Corolla soon, so I won't have to worry about keeping an old, great condition car which is impossible to find parts for as my daily driver.

Another thing is the value of old cars, I own a mint 2000 Honda prelude and I could sell it for a big profit but I like the car so much that I don’t want to, but it’s hard to justify keeping the car when it’s a old car worth 15k and I could buy something else for that money. It’s a paradox with no clear answer.

As car people we need to really start coming together and respecting everyone who enjoys their car, which for some is storing them in the winter, and for some is driving it all the time! Thats what being a car person is all about, enjoying the hobby at any pay grade and with any car we enjoy. Tedward knows what he's talking about, people judge too much and I think a lot of us can agree that we've been guilty and judged others ruining a nice car but the reality is that if we don't enjoy them then someone else will! Just maintain it, coat it, treat it as good as possible but enjoy the heck out of it while not ruining it for no reward.

The daily driver concept has always been flawed because it assumes you have a basic car and project/track/specialty car, which most people really don't. I drive my FL5 on stock summers in Maine at the moment. I know I should probably get a set of winter tires, but I only take it out when it has been a while since snowfall so there's no snow on the roads and the temps are above 32 F. The Michelins can work in those temps, albeit with not their full grip (needs at least 45 F), and as long as I don't drive it below 20 F, according to Michelin and Tire Rack, I shouldn't face the problem of compound cracking as well. As for the salt, I have the car completely rust coated (underbody + fenders, doors, engine bay). For the snowy days, I have my 2002 CR-V to do the heavy lifting. The gist of mentioning all of this is that as long as you know how to avoid damaging your car, drive it! It's a car, especially in this case, a great driving car, so make it worth it (with all the safeguards ofc).

Different perspective for you @tedward - I have a 23 RS3 which was my daily driver for 5 months. Finally I picked up a new civic hatch to have a daily driver. The civic is a revelation to me - 9 times out of 10, I will pick driving it vs my RS3. Does that mean I don't like my RS3? No, its the absolute reality for my personality that the civic is a better tool to run errands, go through all the traffic and stop lights in my area, not have to care about it, etc etc. The term "daily driver" varies GREATLY of how and where you actually drive. To me, there is very little fun in driving a performance car slow or through the mundane activities that an appliance should carry out. Final point to mention - if something happens to my rs3, I really can't replace it in the short or mid term, as the supply is extremely limited. The civic has actually messed me up to the point that it makes me question what I want in a car, or how a car equates to $. Getting off topic but honda executed the new civic so, so, so, well.
@TassieLorenzo Жыл бұрын
Shouldn't the RS3 drive like any Audi A3 for around town driving though? I'm a little confused about this. It shouldn't be too different to running errands in a Audi A3 1.0 TSI, apart from the width and needing to be careful about low the bodykit is.

@jtland4842 Жыл бұрын
In my opinion you can still drive a car and preserve it. You just have to spend more money and time maintaining the car by doing a proper rust prevention, washing the car properly and frequently, as well as the normal maintence items like fluid changes on a good interval. I understand why people can't do this if they don't have the financial means to do so, but people need to keep all this in mind on why some really expansive cars Tedward is mentioning are able to be driving in the winter because they either they have the money to maintain the cars or they have the money to waste on letting them rot. I can understand why people get annoyed at the people letting their nice car rot but understand that they might be doing the maintence if you don't know 100%. And this is why some people don't drive their nice cars in bad conditions because they don't have the time and/or money to do the proper mainence to prevent a car from corroding. Edit: There are also people that just don't know what proper mainence looks like and how/why you do it. Do educating some people about it can be the right way to go about that situation. If it is someone you know just ask them about what they do with their car and why. This will let them know you are just interested in them and their car and you want to know more about it in a non-judgemental way.

People who complain about you dailying your HONDA are insane. I bought my Mustang GT with the intention that I’d only drive it on weekends and perfect sunny days while my Kia K5 soaks up the mileage, rain, and road salt. But sometimes I want to hear the damn V8 and I’ll drive it in less than adequate weather. But who cares. It’s my car. And tbh Mustangs are a dime a dozen anyway so it’s not some super special rare car. But even if I owned a Ferrari, I’d still want to drive it when I feel like.

Have you tried driving on Comfort mode for a full tank of gas? If you tried your best what kind of mpg would you get?
@TedwardDrives Жыл бұрын
Yes I’m usually on comfort mode. 32mpg is my best

@Tedward in the immortal words of stoned Ollie Williams, "Not too bad." I've got a 2019 Accord 1.5L MT with aftermarket frontpipe, downpipe, intercooler, intake, cat back, short shifter parts, KTUNER stage 2 and it's been so rewarding to modify and take to track day. Soon I'm going to install a resonator, upgraded brake pads and rotors, a rear sway bar, and Michelin Pilot Sport tires

Shoes are meant to be worn, cars are meant to be driven. People who can afford things should be able to use it however they please!

I get your point, but I think the reason why people are upset is because the type R is so desirable but so hard for regular people to get. So when you use your influencer status to be the first in line, only to treat it as a putter that you’re not too concerned about, it kind of rubs people the wrong way.

It’s bizarre for someone to get irritated about what other people do with their own money, cars, life etc. They need to direct their attention and energy into their own lives, society would benefit greatly if everyone adapted that philosophy. “Theirs my business and none of my business”.

So basically Tedward is just flexing on us FL5 owners who won't subject it to these conditions because we see it as a premium car, while he, with his moneybags, just see's it as a beater for his Porsche

The same people complaining you’re driving it in the snow, are the same people that would tell you to twin turbo it Generally speaking people don’t understand cars. -salesman

I hate this thing with internet car culture that people are so bent out of shape over what someone who is not them is doing or not doing with their own car. How they treat something as mundane as a Civic, an Elantra, or a Corolla. What mods they’re doing vs what they’re “supposed” to be doing. I remember a Reddit thread where an Aussie was talking about people at car meets telling him he needs to get a daily so he can keep miles off his one and only car. That car is an R34 Skyline GTR. I would daily a skyline in a heartbeat! I would come up with excuses to drive it! I would “accidentally” forget something at the store and insist I go back to get that thing! That is my dream car, why would I not drive it except to a parking lot so people can just stare at it? Recently I’ve been thinking an old Ferrari with a gated manual would be so much fun to own. That would get driven too absolutely. Cars are meant to be driven. They’re not investments, they’re tools. Some of them are more toy than tool, but they’re meant to be used regardless. Stop worrying about resale value, it’s ruining the market for people who actually want to buy fun cars to drive. Live and let live, please.

Oh it’s the same for those who don’t wanna push their cars hard. If it’s someone on a Lamborghini who doesn’t wanna drive it like a hooligan, they’d say because it’s expensive. But when it comes to driving an M3 like any normal person would, they’d tell you to sell it and drive a 325i instead. Car community can be a headache sometimes.

100% of cars were engineered & assembled to be DRIVEN. They are CARS. Also, cleaning products exist as well as the concept of maintenance. On the other hand, if you'd rather have it sit, that's on you to do what makes you happy.

I'm all for driving your nice car whenever possible but the road salt in New England is stupid. You're basically paying (tax money) to rot your car. You can still have a fun/reliable winter beater
@EdwardBoicourtIV Жыл бұрын
People don't want you to drive your type R in the winter so when prices come down there will be nice ones they can afford still on the road. But those same people cheer when the exotic one off cars get driven in the winter so one day they can afford one with bad paint and rust lol.

Even the truck guys... you lowered a truck thats blasphemy! Yes and if its an 4x4 street style truck, I can have fun with digs (like all the other AWD cars that launch so well) if i wanted a off road truck i wouldn't own a clean example, because off roading to me is going to have scratches and dents from trees, not just going on a dirt road or parking lot (TRXs/Raptors)
