Why the ending of season 13 is so good is because throughout this entire series we watch every aspect of Church die. First it was Church’s very being, then his splintered emotions, his past, his love, his original body, and then when all that remains is his memory, even that eventually faded away. Church of every iteration has sacrificed more then any character I have ever seen on in fiction in hopes of a greater to future that he will never see, and he did it hoping it was enough.
@Omentallic3 жыл бұрын
I personally think the season 13 cliffhanger being followed up by an anthology season was a good choice. The current story arc was completed; we left season 13 alongside Church with his final goodbye (hence "The End"); and it acted as a nice breath of fresh air after several story-heavy seasons (which made the season 13 ending feel more impactful and meaningful as we weren't just immediately thrown into another huge conflict). Had season 13 or the start of season 14 shown the fight to get out of the ship, I feel like it would have heavily detracted from Church's monologue - The open-ended sequence felt more fitting and generally worked better for the themes of the trilogy. You also seemed to just skip over season 15, lumping it in with season 16, which felt a bit odd given how disconnected they were outside of the last few moments (with season 15 not initially being intended as part of a new trilogy). Would have been interesting to hear your take on the Blues and Reds, especially given your prior comments on the Freelancers.

I still think season 13 is the end of RvB. Sadly season 17 is likely the way it is because Burnie and Joel (voices of Church and Caboose respectively) left. Not sure of RoosterTeeth's relationship with Jason (voice of Tucker). So currently only the Reds, Washington, and Carolina are the only ones left from the old cast still with the company. I gotta disagree with you on the season thirteen. One could argue that Church was the main character of the story, so at the end we were viewing the world of rvb with Church. In this case it makes sense for the series to end like that. We don't know if the reds and blues make it, but like Church we know them and have faith that they'll make it. In fact, I firmly believe that the series should have ended like that. No anthology, no shisno paradox (ugh), rather let the ending hang on the audiences faith in the characters, something that hasn't been done before as far as I can tell.

I didn’t mind the Freelancer story. It was kinda cool to see where the project originally came from and learn why it was started to begin with. I thought the Chorus trilogy was great. It had some good comedy and it was pretty cool seeing how a bunch of idiots ending up coming together after so many years to turn in legitimate heroes. It was something you never thought they’d be able to do outside of dumb luck like with the Meta. I was even okay with how season 13 ended. But as soon as actual time travel and battling gods started happening, I knew it was done. I mean, where do you go after the guys essentially punch God? I tried to watch Zero. I couldn’t get past episode 2, and after how dirty they did Wash’s injury and then Tucker? Fuck. That. Should’ve just ended it when Church died. He was the centerpiece of everything RvB because of Project Freelancer. When he went, PF died with him. The story was over. They could have had one last episode after that where they basically just retire on Chorus and finally have a real home and that would have been it.
@imlegos21533 жыл бұрын
I feel like you could dismiss the 'vilains being dumb' with Felix's established cockiness, combined with wanting to be there to make sure the prisoners they brought on actually finished the job, or at least weakened them enough to go down there himself and do the deed. And Locus is there because Felix wants to be sure about what he's doing and where; Felix is afraid of Locus afterall. As for Project Freelancer's growing prevalence; I feel it could be considered a result of the episodes getting longer, a desire to flesh the world out more, and a reason to have the present cast go around doing stuff. 16 minutes of straight comedy just probably wouldn't work that well, so they split that into an action/drama-focused 'prequel' segment that gave backstory to the newer characters and Church & the AIs while establishing a new villain; Dr. Leonard Church. Season 11 was probably trying to ease a new cast & writers into RVB so they went with the old style, but with such a drastically new circumstance that it still stood out. Season 13's ending also felt good and comparable since it wrapped up Church's story when Season 10 just wrapped up Project Freelancer. Season 14 (The Anthology) does have it's good episodes; the prologue episodes featuring Flowers gathering the Reds and Blues for their 'endless stalemate' are alright. And while they don't really contribute anything the Felix & Locus episodes were fun too.

Good video man! I do see what you mean by a shift in focus around season 8, but I wouldn't say that was the start of a downfall. Many people say the show peaked in season 6-10, and the finale in season 10 was where the show should have stopped. The "return to for" you mention in the first half of season 11 for me was actually a bit of a drag, seeing as in seasons 8-10 I saw how incredible the show could be, and now we were back to the same jokes we had heard for 6 years. The season 11-13 arc starts slow, but in my opinion has an even better finale than season 10. I also believe that season 14 makes sense where it is, leaving the cliffhanger in season 13 unanswered. It would actually make the most sense if it was never answered, seeing as that was what church's monologue was all about. If you ask me, though there was a shift in focus around season 8, the depart from what made the show great really started when they continued the story into season 15.

On another note, the freelancer saga was fucking amazing though. Even from the huge departure of tone, the fact that it was still hilarious, and I was able to care about those characters that I only got to know for a small amount of time, on top of amazing fight scenes and music, that saga was awesome. I really can't say the same unfortunately for the future seasons, especially with Zero. The least those future seasons could've done was at least be funny and entertaining but it was just beyond cheesy.

I think the series was perfect for the first 13 seasons, Seasons 6-10 were the peak, which served as a finale to the freelancer arc, s 11-13 was a great additional story that expanded the depth of characters and provided rvb's best villain (Felix), don't get me started on the final scene of s 13

Will watch later but when I see the title I gotta add my two cents that I can 1. RVB was the greatest thing of all time, the writing made it feel like we were watching (or I suppose listening) real interactions between people 2. Man, I remembered watching literally just a few seconds of RVB Zero and thought "this is going to be horrible." The over-the-top designs, the lens flares, even just the mere body language animations of simple conversations told me that this wasn't going to be about anything at all and it was going to be the most unfunniest thing I've ever seen. And that was only gathered by a couple seconds. But I wanted to give it a chance because I thought I was being over-predictable in my pessimism. I was wrong.

My two cents: I watched RvB when 1-5 came out on Netflix, and then binged the remainder of the show, watching it weekly as the Chorus Trilogy came out. Personally, I feel (like many others here) that Season 10 or 13 made itself a great end to the series (13 IMO being better and having more meaning although bittersweet). I was fine with Season 14, as it cleared up some things, offered best backstories and fun side stories to the main plot. When Season 15 came out, I watched that weekly as well, and I remember being a bit frustrated as to not seeing the Reds and Blues for like the first four episodes and being annoyed with the new characters. I didn’t really care for the plot line of the main season as well, not really grabbing me. I watched like one episode of 16 and then I just stopped keeping up. I feel that what would have made Season 15 better and not deal with 16 and 17 or just tackled them differently is this: After they won the battle and hear Church’s story, the Blues (not really the Reds I don’t think) would I think sort of have a moment of grief, especially Carolina and Wash. IMHO, with a little rework and actual respect put into it, Zero would have honestly been a better fit, with Tucker leading Shatter Squad, and Carolina and Wash acting more as mentors. Let’s also say Zero’s plan to get unimaginable power does work in a sense and ends up causing the “Shizno paradox”. New has to meet old (Caboose being more depressed than Season 11 or angry more often, Reds wanting another enemy to fight, etc.) and work together to stop it and stop Zero. Boom, you’re done. The only other alternative to make Zero better is make it separate from RVB (or at least a side-story divorced from the main cast).

I wouldn't call Season 13 a cliff hanger it was an ending, You were supposed to see what happened as church says you just have to have faith they'd make it "Ain't that a bitch" Oh and to be fair 14 Had some canon episodes giving back stories to the reds and blues so that was neat

I liked the freelancer portion of the series because I liked all the characters and the drama had already been seeping in over time. The few freelancers we knew from the beginning were introduced organically. The time travel seasons and especially Zero didn't have that organic introduction of the characters and of course the old one's were gone. The show can be comedy, drama, or anything else but It can't just turn on a dime or forget its own characters!

I can always watch the first 5 seasons without hesitation, I still have all 5 on the original DvDs and consider the bonus ending of S5 where they all kill each other as my head canon. I didn't mind the other seasons afterwards, but the season with God AI did it for me as the sure sigh RvB died, and double so when I heard they fired Joel (Caboose) for not "towing the line". Add to the fact Burnie literally did a Church and vanished from RvB to "move to new projects" and that was all I needed to see that RT will go the way of Machinima soon. It was a wild ride, but now RT and RvB is just... dust and echoes...

I really enjoyed RVB in the earlier series, I thought it was hilarious and loved it. In a way it reminded me of some of the comedy shows I watched growing up like Red Dwarf and Blackadder, shows that focused much more on the characters and writing than the setting or action. When it started focusing more on freelancers, I found myself losing interest in the show. It just wasn't what I wanted any more, the comedy was changing from being writing and character based to being physical comedy. Not that it's wrong, it's just not want I was looking for. I think it was season 8 or 9 that was the last one I watched, it just wasn't the show I wanted any more.

Red vs Blue has always been one of favorite series. The mix of comedy, action, and lore/story is great. Red vs Blue having some focus on seriousness and freelancers wasn’t a bad thing IMO, though I see your point and I agree there should be some of Reds and Blues in there. You could argue wether season 10 or 13 is a better ending. I agree the freelancers was a shift but I don’t think that was bad (at least not on its own). Season 14 had some good stuff in there. Season 15 and onward is when the series had a quality shift (in many people’s eyes anyway). Though I have yet to see those seasons myself so can’t speak on them myself.

............Wait, Is Miles Luna single-handedly responsible for Rooster Teeth dying? Let's talk a minute about Monty Oum. Now, being as impartial as I can be about him, Here's what I think about him. Dude is one of the most impressive 3D Animators I've ever seen, His writing is......alright, him dying it when RWBY went off the rails, so I'm inclined to believe that at the very least he was a better writer than who is left at Rooster Teeth, but his writing wasn't exactly revolutionay. What made his work, specifically RWBY, well......work. Was that his animation skills were off the rails, his writing was......acceptable, even good at times, I've seen Network and Streaming Service shows with FAR worse writing than him, it helps that he would focus on setting and character focus. No BS, just story and fighting. The problem with the works AFTER his death are simple. A, and this would be a hard act to follow for pretty much ANY Studio really, no one can really compare to him Fight Choreography wise, he was simply a Genius at that. But....... B, For as merely alright as his writing was, it was LEAGUES beyond what the current writers at Rooster Teeth are capable of. This is a problem as, like I stated, his writing wasn't exactly mind blowing, so the fact they can't even reach THAT is a significant problem. His writing skills were made up by his sheer passion, world building, and most importantly his animation skills. Their writing could......almost be forgiven, I say almost cause they are CLEARLY incompetent and even Monty's animation skills might not have been enough to save their writing, if their animation skills were up to par or even just Choreography. So what does that leave? Well they also got rid of alot of the original guys responsible for RvB and in turn Rooster Teeth. These people simply are over their heads and far beyond the skills of the people who built the company to begin with. Which leads me to one statement: Rooster Teeth would be best served if Warner just put them under Adult Swim or even Toonami. I can't think of where else their style would work as well (That is owned or a partner of Warner.) and quite frankly these dumbasses need quality control that William Street might be able to provide. I could be HORRIBLY wrong about this assessment but given all the competent people are basically gone, this is the only way Rooster Teeth can be salvaged. RWBY (And Maybe Gen:LOCK, Season one already aired there.......yes really.) on Toonami, Nomad of Nowhere and Red Vs. Blue on Adult Swim Proper (Really Red Vs. Blue can work in either place, Action and Comedy alike makes it a pretty good choice for that.) as well as wherever for their other stuff. I don't know how else Rooster Teeth will survive long term.

The world building started to become an issue when they decided to be avatar. The writing was bad when Monty was alive, it was just less noticeable with the fight scenes and how small scale the setting was. With it now being about saving the world and travel to different kingdoms, the world building and the characters within it takes center stage, and the whole writing staff (not only Miles despite him being lead writer) is at fault. The 2 new writers started promising but vol 8 just about ruin any hope of them being an improvement. Kerry is not a good director 80% of the time.

RvB used to be so damn inspirational to me, as an aspiring creator. It showed that how far you can get with some clever comedy writing and passion. It build an entire company around it from it’s success, got its own game mode (Griffball) but now… I see it as an empty husk of what it once was. The soul is gone. The passion is gone. Replaced is a cynicism and a farce that feels like someone being forced to masquerade a dead horse around when it already ran it’s course. RvB should have ended at S10. It’s ending was perfect for me, and the director will forever stand out as a villain for me because it dropped the pretense of his schemes, and showed him as a man holding desperately onto the past. Now… I get nothing. Let the show rest.

It truly is a bottomless kind of shame you feel when you see a series that you love so much for whatever it was that made it great slowly devolve into an unintelligent, dragging, unbalanced slog that had long forgotten that special spark that made it all click. This is why nothing is meant to last forever, this is why nothing should continue to grotesquely stretch for 18 SEASONS, it was special to begin with because we thought we would be taken on a wild, wonderful journey right until the very end, however... When you finally realize that there is no end in sight you're stuck wandering the remains of a world where greatness once bloomed, destined for an eternity trapped in never-ending, ever-looping purgatory... Much like life, all of it is fleeting and temporary and trying to immortalize something, anything "forever" will only mean that in another time ahead of us through the eyes of another it would have long lost all of its meaning. Essentially making it worth... nothing. I thought of all that and have never once watched Red Vs. Blue... bruh.

I won’t lie, after season 13, my love for the series started decreasing, not because of the comedy taking a backseat to all the serious storytelling, but because season 13 was the perfect ending, Church’s beautiful speech, the reds and blues being heroes But then, season 15 came out and at first I was not happy, but seeing the connection between Carolina and Washington as they fully come to terms with the fact that they’re the last of the Freelancers, them questioning if they can really start over, if they can really move beyond their pasts, that’s a plot I loved, and Carolina playing nurse for Washington in season 16, I loved that too But…everything else I wasn’t too happy with, because the comedy felt way too forced and ridiculous, and yeah, ridiculousness CAN be funny, but it doesn’t mean it WILL be funny, season 16 hurt to watch, and a lot of times I found myself saying “Are you serious right now? 😑” because it was so stupid, the only scene I liked from season 16 was Washington’s speech about responsibility followed by his emotional outbreak when he found out he had brain damage, that scene felt good because for the entire last season, followed with the events of season 16 leading up to that moment, Washington and Carolina had really started growing closer together, almost like the parents of the reds and blues, then Washington finds out that Carolina was keeping a HUGE secret from him and suddenly he doesn’t know if he can trust her anymore, that scene was incredible, and the way it affected Carolina was amazing too, because she was always trying to stop the reds and blues from being the jackasses they were, but then Wash had left, and after losing Wash, all she could think about was getting him back, and so she was done trying to stop the reds and blues, she just wanted her friend back Then season 17, which was a decent season, it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the best, once again, one of the only things that was keeping me interested was the relationship between Washington and Carolina (ngl I fangirl screamed when they said they loved each other, I know it was probably more platonic but I really don’t care) and at the end of it all, I didn’t really hate it, especially how Carolina had to fight her inner demons, and so season 17 was a bit weird but overall, rather enjoyable when compared to season 16 Then…RVB ZERO…inhale and scream I watched ONE episode, then said “Well…this is garbage” JUST MAKE A DIFFERENT SERIES, GIVING IT THE TITLE “Red vs Blue” means a lot of shit needs to be brought in, otherwise it’s not Red vs Blue, it’s just a mess If they really wanted to do RVB Zero, they should’ve just made a different series, called it something else, take out the fan favourite characters like Washington and Carolina, just make something new instead of slapping the name of Red vs Blue on it, because it’s the same mistake the Star Wars sequels made In conclusion, after season 13, the main thing keeping the series alive for me was the development of Washington and Carolina’s relationship

This show became my bread and butter after a recovery from alot of depression shit in my life in my early early 20s. Being a electronically challenged kid most of my life I relied on watching rvb via old KZbin. And sad to say it wasn't until netflix actually had the first 12 seasons of rvb did I binge the ever loving shit out of this series. It helped me. I rewatched it so many times in awe of its evolution in story telling while still remaining true to its comedic roots. And seeing season 13 onward I was in for the ride, even after the shows decline in quality. I was too hesitant to watch Zero after knowing virtually no one but Tucker would return from the original cast, and as much as I love him, being a weirdo named Tucker myself, I can't watch a show without my boys and girls who I grew to love. Losing Church/Epsilon and Tex was a pain in and of itself, like losing any fictional character. But that wasn't as hard to swallow as what came next. Monty Oum's passing was RT's descent into relative mediocrity imo, dude was a fucking juggernaut and the first 2 seasons of RWBY will always be dear to me as from then onward: RT would milk the legacy of such a prolific artist that they turned the show into something he probably sure as hell never wanted... I'm glad I stayed with RVB and never watched Zero. Good things don't deserve to be tarnished, but when they are its best to remember what made us love that series in the first place, see what went wrong like with most hardships in our lives, and learn and move on from them. You'll always be there for me, RVB, but only in the bittersweet scent of nostalgia. RIP RVB, (and most of RT's content in general)

Good criticism of Chorus trilogy. While I love that arc it’s not flawless. The biggest was not ending the series there and the only other major problem was the thing you mentioned but even then I don’t think it’s a fatal flaw. I think you’re exaggerating a little bit. It’s quite good in my opinion. Seasons 15 and 16 were pretty bad though. I still enjoy them somewhat but the cracks are too big to ignore. And season 17 is actually pretty decent.
