Hanging out with a Russian woman who frequently asked me what certain words mean, I realized that even if I know what a word means, I can't always put its definition into words. That McDonalds example you bring up at the end hits hard. As a kid, I really shouldn’t have been eating there since the food is awful, but I remember always being excited just to walk in because you had the warm colors, the Americana atmosphere, and- most importantly- the play place and its eponymous ball pit. I watched each of those features be stripped away as I grew up. McDonald’s just looks cold now. A lot of companies and brands feel cold now. Maybe that’s my definition. To become woke is to chill your heart.

I remember before the play place and ball pit when they had an actual playground with monkey bars, metal slides, a tower saucer, and swings all shaped like McDonald’s characters. And of course the Ronald McDonald caboose where all the cool kids had their birthday parties. Crist it’s not just McDonald’s either. You look at any franchise 20 years ago and they had a a lot more welcoming atmosphere with comfortable seats. Now it’s all post modern blandness with hard plywood benches that are angled so your ass slides off it if you don’t tuck your legs in front of you.

Oh lord, I've felt this. I'll also add, some McDonald's locations around my area had unique theming to their play places, making it all the more enticing to visit specific franchises of the same restaurant. One of the closest I knew of had a jungle-ish theme with its main attraction being this plastic tree you could climb up the inside of, a crane you could pull on to lift the bulldozer, and of course, a slide. Did I also mention it had an arcade below the tree where you could play video games? Those things barely worked and crashed a lot but by god I loved those as a kid. A different location had a different themed play place, so if you weren't feeling the tree one there was another further away that might be up your alley in terms of play. Nowadays, with everything looking the same...what's even the point of driving further away to a different Franchise of McDonald's? They all are pretty much the same, even down to their play places. I pretty much don't eat there anymore in part because of this

Woke is hard to define because what "woke" people believe constantly changes and is not based on any principle beyond exerting control. Woke people say and do what they need to in any given moment to feel they have "won". An example is saying "my body my choice" about abortion but then saying you have no right to refuse a vaccination. It’s preferable if woke can’t be defined, because then their enemies will have a clear target to attack. It’s not that woke is hard to define, but leftists/marxists/whatever you want to call them won’t agree to your definition because to do so would make them vulnerable to further attacks. Being asked to define woke is a Kafka Trap because your answer will always be wrong to them, and then they can use that to discredit you. They can even go further by claiming that woke means being respectful and empathetic, which is obviously not true because then they’d be classical liberals, and they hate liberals. Of course, once woke falls out of favour, they’ll select a new term that serves the same purpose. An interesting point about the red pill, if you actually watched _The Matrix,_ is that there's no contempt for those lost. Neo was out to free them from the machines, too. It's even simpler than how most people define it: woke is simply far left cultist thought. Some galaxy brains like to be dishonest and try to conflate that with "liberalism" (*cough* Little Joel) but anyone with the tiniest bit of knowledge on American social and political views knows that liberals and leftists are not the same, even if there is some overlap. If a lefty asks what woke means, you can just tell them it's leftism (Marxist, socialist, anarchist) and if they still don't understand (or pretend not to) then you can break it down further and elaborate on the leftist framework at play. 'What is woke' was asked once in my church group. My answer was the arrogant self-righteousness of today's left that had previously infected the right in the 80s and 90s. I should have added how it needed to coincide with political and social power so it can be forced down other people's throats, but I was in a rush to give my answer before the leftist in our group took over the conversation. (Having lived through that era of the arrogant right in the church, I can say that the arrogant left version seems to be worse because of the left's standard level of influence in media and culture. At least with the right's time they were resisted by media and culture. The "attempting to normalise" part of wokeness is certainly relatable to me. Several weeks back, I was commenting on a Quora post by a bloke called Mike Jones (you may have encountered him if you've been on Quora's political spaces) where he was trying to refute claims that Democrats were only pushing narratives as opposed to conveying consensual reality. I decided to add to the conversation by comparing two examples of each, how statements like "climate change is real" or "racism is wrong" would be "consensual reality, while "non-vegans are actively destroying the planet" or "America is a systemically racist country" would be examples of narratives. Mike responded saying while he agreed with my first example of "narrative", he believed my second example was still consensual reality, claiming the definition for "systemic racism" was as concrete as the definition for, say, "concrete". This didn't sit well with me, considering there are plenty of academics as well as laypeople who disagree on the precise meaning of the term, and that Wikipedia defines "institutional" and "systemic" racism as one and the same while Mike claimed they were defined differently. But rather than try and empathise with my confusion, he instead decided to assume I was acting in bad faith and claim that Google and Wikipedia should never be relied on for concrete definitions despite how many people use them for quick references. If the term really is as set in stone as he claims, why not just advocate for Wikipedia to change it so fewer people are misinformed? If "consensual reality" to these people just means "whatever a group of elite political scholars of a certain agenda define it to mean", that just goes to show how unempathetic and bad faith they themselves are, and I'm pretty sure if Mike Jones had been more of a climate activist, he'd have also tried to claim that the "non-vegans are destroying the planet" narrative was actually "consensual reality" as well.

I see it as two definitions, a narrow meaning and as a symbolic term for a wider idea like how "crown" can also mean "the government". The narrow meaning: Having a racial/gender/etc. consciousness. This presupposes many positions. For example "Consciousness" means socialist style consciousness raising, which presupposes opressor/opressed dynamics. Which in turn presupposes this is definitionally bad. The fact that wokeness is so incredibly culturally conservative is something I think many of us notice. A lot of people might disagree because it paints itself as open, but when you're walking on eggshells every day because someone might freesociate some offense, you're only going to do what's already popular and acceptable. You're weirdly half-right, it's not "culturally conservative" at all, but your descriptor of "orthodox" is much more accurate, because "popular and acceptable" can be astroturfed and forced, anything goes as long as it fits within the critical consciousness of attacking the oppressive majority and uplifting the oppressed minority. You hit on two key points here that I really wish more people were able to identify and communicate as well as you did. #1 That "woke" is fundamentally defined by intersectionality, i.e. the idea that society is made up of various interwoven identity groups with differing levels of privilege and discrimination. And often by extension the idea that it is our moral duty to prop up some of those identity groups whilst disadvantaging others (8:49, "redistributive goals ... power, wealth, land") in the name of equity. #2 That the "woke has lost all meaning" narrative is a subversive power play stemming from the far left's pursuit of normalizing their ideals. This makes it all the more frustrating to see people who clearly oppose this ideology parroting that line as if they're enlightened, when really they're just playing directly into the far left's hands. I would also argue that some of that narrative stems from adherents of intersectional theory just disliking the fact that people have a word they can use to easily identify and mock them, but I suppose that is ultimately the same thing. They can't normalize their ideals if said ideals are being openly mocked in the public square. So... destroy the words that people use to mock them, problem solved. They already achieved this with "SJW" in the past, which had more or less the same meaning. "Social Justice" is just the corrective branch of intersectionality, that's the part of the ideology that deals with actually seeking to create the equity through "redistributive goals." Realistically I think the word "woke" will fall into disuse in the near future though. I think it is too damaged to salvage at this point. But then people will just come up with a new word that means the same thing, and around we go again.

I don't find terms like 'woke' useful because they're labels affixed to people. I've met very few people who could pass the purity test for any tribe if they were being honest. If I want to discuss racial income inequality for example, starting by labelling my debate opponent 'woke,' or even an 'opponent' doesn't move the discussion forward. I'd much rather just ask what we're basing this assertion of engineered racial income inequality on, and scrutinize that source for accuracy and relevance. If the person I'm talking to doesn't want to do that, and instead just wants to fly off the handle and make wild accusations at me personally, I still don't need a label for them. The word 'immature' works just fine and actually describes what's happening without having to stigmatize their particular beliefs. I’ve been doing Uber eats deliveries to keep myself afloat while finding a new job and the McDonald’s comparison is spot on These days it’s hard to even get ahold of an employee to rattle off my order number because there’s no one at the register to take orders because of the self-order kiosks. It’s as impersonal as possible, by design. What really unsettles me is that McDonald’s is the only restaurant that strictly necessitates you do not use the customer’s name when ordering, just the last three digits of their order number. Each McDonald’s is just a creepy little automated goyslop factory now, only a short matter of time before the employees are redundant

The problem with the term "woke" is that it started being used mostly as a simple, perjorative term, and quite a broad one, since it encompasses different groups into one. Many people didn't even think that far into it, as it's not some serious, academic concept. When the left noticed that, they started using the "define woke" as a gotcha trick, and that author kinda fell for it. She did define it, but got nervous because she couldn't make a short answer on the spot. I for one almost always used it as a crude, exagerated and insincere militancy of progressive politics. James Lindsay's definition sounds much more serious and academic, but still, the term itself is not that serious to begin with, but i guess we should at least have a good, short explanation for it, unless you want to fall for their new dirty trick.
