Diet. Your gut flora is off balance. When I personally eat a lot of sugar, it feeds the ‘fungus’ she is talking about and makes my dandruff really bad. I found this out when I was trying to get rid of acne... I noticed my dandruff and acne flare up at the same time, I did research and it’s all connected to gut flora. Same goes for eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and many other skin conditions. The ‘fungus’ starts in the gut and when it’s over produced, it comes out through various skin conditions. :) try cutting out dairy and sugar for 3-4 weeks and see if there is any improvement.

My scalp was so dried out during November thru January. I use Cetaphil cream for my body and finally thought, why not use it on my scalp since it worked so well on my skin. I took a small spray bottle, scraped a few big blobs of the cream into the bottle, added water and shook it really well. I then put the spray nozzle right against my scalp and sprayed this suspension around the hairline then massaged it in. I'm so glad I tried this out, my dry scalp, severe itchiness and redness went away within a week or 2 and the best part is it didn't leave a greasy residue. Now I just use it every few days after I wash and rinse my hair. Thanks for the information, most videos don't discuss the actual difference between dandruff and flakes.

Just thought I would add this piece of information. Dandruff can also be caused by a lot of stress. I went through a divorce 5 years ago and the last 3 years of my marriage I was under so much stress from the emotional, mental and verbal abuse that I had dandruff really bad. I had never had dandruff before. I went to the dermatologist who diagnosed it. He prescribed something for my scalp which I used faithfully but it didn’t really helped. I did exfoliate my scalp before I shampooed because if i didn’t it would be even worse. I couldn’t get it to clear up until I went through my divorce and got out from under the abuse and the stress of it. It’s been 5 years, I’m remarried to a wonderful man and no dandruff! So you might want to look at what is going on in your life and ask yourself when you noticed the dandruff and is there something that is causing you some serious stress in your life and do these things correlate with each other.

You are correct about the diferences between dandruff and dry skin, but very wrong when you say that dry skin is the same as Seborrheic dermatitis. It's actually the oposite. Just look at the name "sebo" which means grease, oil. I found this definition: Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition associated with the oily areas of the body including the scalp, face, eyebrows, ears, eyelids, chest, armpits, groin, or under the breasts. Common symptoms include greasy, white to yellow, scaly or crusty patches and white to yellow, oily flakes on the scalp, hair, eyebrows, beard or mustache. The skin may become red, inflamed, and be accompanied by excessive itching. Seborrheic dermatitis, sometimes referred to as ‘seb derm’, is typically chronic and relapses and flare-ups are common.

If your hair still looks flat or not curly enough even after washing your hair then it could be due to product build up. That is when I clarify with neutrogena shampoo. That is just my understanding but would love to see what mel thinks.

Dry scalp will feel dry, tight and itchy. If it's product build up, it will feel like there's stuff in your hair. Like a texture to the strands. If you know you're using a lot of products and not clarifying once a week, then it's most likely product buildup

Dandruff sufferer here! 🙋🏻♀️ I have oily hair and I trained my hair to only be washed every three days or twice a week (hats became my best friend for a decent period of time) and this is how I combatted my oily/dandruff scalp::::: The second night of no wash I use a combination of Apple Cider Vinegar (I prefer Bragg brand; organic with the mother) and water that I put in a spray bottle to distribute throughout my scalp. I part my hair all over and spray the solution in each part till my whole scalp has been spritzed. I let it sit for 10 minutes and then use a scalp shower scrubber to gently massage my scalp. It’s important to do this side to side or up and down and not in circles, otherwise you’ll terrorize your hair follicle. I then rinse it out in the shower. **ACV corrects PH levels and is acidic which keeps funguses at bay; it cleanses and a bonus is that it makes your hair shiny.** You can use conditioner (from mid to end hair shaft) if you want after the rinse, but I just use and comb through leave in conditioning products when I get out (again, from mid to end hair shaft). The third night when I’m actually going to wash it, I use only two small pumps of shampoo to distribute and cleanse just my scalp and then thoroughly rinse it out. If you’re using too much shampoo, that can be one of the “products” of product buildup, so because I want to be certain that won’t be added onto my already existing dandruff I stay proactive about not using a ton of product of anything. If you’re an avid product user and don’t want to wash your hair super often to get rid of all that jazz, just do the ACV rinse and your gorgeous mane will appreciate you. This has saved my humiliation, my scalps irritation and my hairs dignity. 💕

@@ladyema8836 Yes, a slight smell, but not too noticeable or overbearing. I usually wear a hat or my hair up on these days. This is backwards... Seborrheic dermatitis is the condition oily scalps get. Sebum is actually where the word SEBorrheic comes from. I have very oily skin and have been diagnosed with seb derm on my scalp, in my ears, and on my face. It's true that there are two different causes of flaking, dandruff being simply a symptom of the two. Seborrheic dermatitis is the inflammatory response to fungal processes on the skin (overgrowth is caused by excess oiliness), and falls into the same category as other chronic skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Both can be treated with exfoliating treatments and with the correct moisturizing treatments (oily skin needs to be moisturized too, especially when using very harsh antifungal and keratolytic shampoos). Thanks for your videos Mell, I have learned A LOT from watching them, and I'm feeling so much better about my hair! I just really wanted to clarify this little mix-up!

All this time I thought I had dandruff because the dry flakes I get in the front of my hairline can sometimes be big patches, but I have a VERY dry scalp (4C hair) that starts itching midweek, especially in the cooler months. I’ve never exfoliated my scalp before. I’ll try that, as well as your other tips. Thank you for this, Mel!

When my head is really irritated and itchy I usually put this mask on before taking a shower for at least a couple of hour or till is completely dry. First I put some coconut oil then I put the mask : banana avocado 1 egg some oil. My scalp become super moisturised and clean and my hair becomes softer

This is a great video. I've always had what I thought was dandruff/dry scalp and almost every hairstylist I've had has said that it's a common factor with people who have curly hair. I've been told to use organic coconut oil has a hair mask before washing and then gently rub it into the scalp for moisture. I've also been suggested to use Tea Tree Oil products. I currently use both. When I feel my scalp needs a refreshing "breath of fresh air" I use my tea tree shampoo and rotate it with my coconut curls shampoo when I feel my hair (not my scalp) needs more moisture. Since moving from CA to WA, I have noticed a great difference in my scalp dryness. This routine has helped very well so far. BUT what I did learn from your video was the massaging technique with the hair brush to exfoliate! Thank you!!

First, I love your channel. However, as a nurse practitioner, I have to disagree with your definition of seborrheic dermatitis. It IS dandruff. The name seborrheic comes from the word sebum. The definition from Medscape of seborrheic dermatitis is “a papulosquamous disorder patterned on the sebum-rich areas of the scalp, face, and trunk. In addition to sebum, this dermatitis is linked to Malassezia, immunologic abnormalities, and activation of complement. It’s severity ranges from mild dandruff to exfoliative erythroderma.” Dry scalp is an entirely different thing, and otherwise this video seemed accurate. But I wanted to make the point, because it could be very confusing if people are looking for more information later and think that seborrheic dermatitis is dry scalp.

Vinegar is a great exfoliating liquid. One part vinegar, one part water mixed. Massage onto the scalp. Allow the vinegar to eat away at the dry skin for about 5 min then shampoo and rinse. Repeat for a couple days, then once a week for maintenance.

Very eye opening! I discovered how to treat my dry scalp when I got lice from my daughter (I know, yikes! Thankfully I caught it early and was easy to treat). I combed castor oil all over my hair in sections (this is to kill the lice eggs) paying attention to the scalp and l left it on my hair for a few hours, then I combed it through with a lice comb which as very tight metal teeth to comb out the lice and the eggs. After I washed my hair, I realized I didn't have those dry flakes anymore. So now I make hair masks with different oils and pre treat my hair with the masks before washing it and conditioning it. So yes, exfoliation and moisturizing of the scalp is key!

I think I have both. I do definitely have dandruff because I’m oily. I remember as I was a little girl washing my hair practically everyday. Sometimes my dandruff is controlled, so that’s when I have the dry scalp. I’m assuming that I’m over drying it. My mom actually thought that I was not washing my hair properly. 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️

This video is just what I needed! Thank you so much! I have been combatting dry scalp for several months now. My stylist said it wasn't dandruff, just dry scalp. So I thought I should use oil on my scalp. At first, it seemed to work. But a month or so later, it seemed useless. I started washing my hair 2-3 times a week instead of 1x a week because I noticed that the more days passed without washing and exfoliating, the more flakes I got. This all makes sense. I'll stop oiling my scalp!

Substitute Raw honey with whatever shampoo you are using. I’d say mix about 2 table spoons of raw honey with half a table spoon of water. Then massage it all over your scalp and let it sit there for 20 minutes. Rinse it out in the shower, then when you dry your hair your scalp will not be dry and will eliminate the flake problem.

My hair was so itchy last night & I just couldn't take it bc I've tried EVERYTHING so I went on yet another KZbin search & found your video. I've had no luck w oils so I needed something different. I tried 2 things you mentioned in the video. I took my tangle teaser brush (bc the bristles are soft & flexible) & parted my hair row by row & exfloliated w the brush in circular motions. After that I took some aloe vera gel (I use it to calm my face after waxing) & put that onto my scalp then massaged it in. It gave me so much relief & stopped the itching. My scalp is also really moisturized today (the next day). I didn't wash my hair bc I'm type 4-A natural & washing too much can actually dry out my strands but I was able to brush the flakes out of my hair w the tangle teaser. I also have the Epsom salt you used in the video but I didnt wanna have to wash my hair (I washed it 3 days ago) but I will try it on wash day. Anyway this is gonna be my mid-week spa day treat bc exfloliating the scalp gets rid of the flakes but it also stimulates the hair follicles & promotes growth so really everyone can benefit not just dry scalp. & it feels amazing/soothing Much love ❤

I've tried apple cider vinegar (diluted, and not diluted) and lemon (separately), and I notice that after I apply it, I start seeing larger flakes (normally very dusty and annoying), I suppose they get clensed off from the scalp (?). Yesterday I sprayed about 70% concentration (I've heard that's bad, but I don't have sensitive skin, so I don't care) and sprayed it on my scalp, slept on it, washed it today, and it can't see any flakes now... I've done this before a couple of times, and it does come back, not sure what happens if it's done consistently. Try it, see what happens.

okay i think what's happening is the top layer of buildup feels dry in crunchy because it is. Kinda like a fresh scab. it's wet under but the top is dry and prone to crack. I think underneath it's actually oily and if you have inflammation thats going to add to that greasy feeling because i think some of that is essentially pus. I feel gross saying that. Pretty sure thats whats happening with me. I'm trying different things right now. Diff shampoos, i started using rose water on my scalp after i wash it and sometimes castor oil before i wash it because i figure the oil will help break down other oils, and castor oil is supposed to be really healing, at least i think it is. Problem is castor oil is very heavy so i have to wash it twice. But after i did that i noticed a lot of the inflammation calmed down. Still trying to figure out what regimine works for me.
@theewildrose5 жыл бұрын
@@riflehitta-4157 you need to wash your scalp more with a really good shampoo and then just use a serum or oil on the actual hair to protect it from drying. i used to not wash my hair a lot and i thought it was helping btu i think it made things worse long run. try washing twice a week and the problem will likely go away.

For me, it REALLY only subsides when I use like regular shampoos (selsun blue, head and shoulders, and such). But it only gets bad in episodes, so I don't have to stay with those kind of shampoos for long. I have found that products with acv have helped for the in-between. Right now, I'm using the Cantu ACV shampoo and it has really helped. I still have flakes by wash day, but like the "normal, it's been a week since I washed my hair" kind. So try that. Exfoliation also helps like she said because you need to lift the flakes off!

First of all, I just wanna say thank you. For six years I have been suffering from sabborhaeic dermatitis I have been reffed to various doctor's but to my dismay my condition did not get any better. Actually the advertising industry here in India markets any from of flakes on your scalp as dandruff so a major contribution to people using Shampoo's for dandruff to treat dry scalp goes to them. I didn't know that a condition like this even existed before watching this video but now I can finally take the right steps to cure my dry scalp or at least minimize it
