I mean, for the specials and Doctor Donna it's not that bad of an explanation that some of the time lord energy was passed on to her baby. She and her daughter could've shared that energy like the bucketload of things parents share through the placenta. The letting go part was a bit ehh tho, the Doctor just doesn't let go of the past because that's just how the doctor is and he needed to learn to let go.
