Linda Blair who played Reagan was haunted by this role and received death threats for a very long time from crazed people thinking she was the devil. The set was allegedly cursed, even burning down without explanation and a number of crew died during the period of filming. In 1973, no other film like this had ever been made, there’s no CGI at this point and so it solely relies on excellent makeup and camera tricks, a real groundbreaking horror movie and had people vomiting in the theatre. a short video called The Cultural Impact of The Exorcist is available on KZbin and actually demonstrates just how nauseous this film made people. Love your reactions man!

While Linda Blair's performance is rightly judged as remarkable for a child actor it should be noted that she was extensively doubled throughout the possession scenes by an adult actress (26 yrs) named Eileen Dietz. Dietz also provided the ghostly mysterious face, under heavy greasepaint, that haunts Karras' visions and appears in subliminal flashes throughout

18:39 I never understood why she was sitting like that, it looked uncomfortable. I found out she's mimicking the statue from the beginning of the movie. It ties the story back to the beginning, showing us she's becoming possessed by the demon the statue represents and the old priest will be called upon to try and save her. Subtle and brilliant writing!!!

In ancient Mesopotamian religion, Pazuzu (Akkadian: 𒀭𒅆𒊒𒍪𒍪, romanized: pà. zu. zu; also called Fazuzu or Pazuza) was a personification of the southwestern wind, and held kingship over the wind demons.!!! "The Power of Christ compels you!" Fun Fact: The highest-grossing Warner Bros. film of all time when adjusted for inflation. Too Real Fact: Upon its initial theatrical release the film affected many audiences so strongly that at many theaters, paramedics were called to treat people who fainted and others who went into hysterics. And Scene Fact: The scene where Regan projectile vomits at Father Karras only required one take. The vomit was intended to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but the plastic tubing misfired, hitting him in the face. His reaction of shock and disgust while wiping away the vomit is genuine, and Miller admitted in an interview that he was very angered by this mistake.

1. I first saw this with friends when I was 12. Back then nobody paid much attention to what rating system there was. I was aware of the head twisting, puking and language so I kind of had an idea what I was in for. What freaked me out the most was the flashing demon. 2. When the doctor is looking at Reagan's skull x-rays and say's there's "nothing in there" I always 🤣 3. The spider crawl down the stairs was NOT in the original release. 4. The demon wasn't trying to avoid the exorcism. He was looking forward to it with Father Merrin. 5. Father Merrin and the demon had a previous encounter where he almost killed the father. Merin doesn't acknowledge the receipt of the note and tells Karras there's no need for analysis. 6. The demon doesn't kill Merrin. From the beginning we know he has a heart problem most likely brought on by the previous encounter. 7 Karras doesn't kill the demon. He does manage to draw it out of her and sacrificed himself for her. 8. Karras is confessing and asking for forgiveness of his losing of his faith.

One thing that the movie doesn't really convey is that Reagan isn't possessed by the devil. She's possessed by the Mesopotamian demon, Pazuzu. He was the most powerful of their demons so much so that others demons feared him. When Father Merron unearthed the statue in Iraq, he unwittingly released Pazuzu. At the very end of the ritual, possessed Reagan ripped off the medallion of Saint Joseph from Father Karras' neck thus removing the protection. This allowed Pazuzu to enter Karras.

17:37 Fact: In the book, the spider-walk is very quiet, and consists of Regan following Sharon (the friend and assistant to Regans Mom) around and occasionally licking her ankle. KZbin has the whole deleted scene of Regan's spider walk. At the end of the staircase she turns herself around and sticks out a pointy lizard like tongue and tries to lick Sharon's legs and chases her to the front door. Real creepy. 😳

I had this movie on vhs in my closet as a kid, on the way back home one day, I asked my dad what the movie was and he said it was a scary movie and I said “I can watch it, it ain’t that scary” and my dad for some reason let me and my older brother watch it, I was 7 years old and my brother was 10. I don’t remember watching most of it, and I remember being scared shitless hiding under the cover on the couch and all I saw was Regan going down the steps and I covered my face before the blood came out her mouth, I told my dad to turn it off and he did and I remember watching Emperors New Groove to was that movie out of my brain. Around a year later I said I was old enough to watch it now and my dad said fine and he made some spaghetti and I didn’t like spaghetti and I was still scared shitless and my dad said he would turn it off if I finished my bowl of spaghetti. I have not watched the movie in full since, I’m 14 now and I have seen plenty horror movies and I still think it’s the scariest movie ever, I will watch reactors watch it and that’s it, one day I will watch it with friends but never alone in my house

That spiderwalk down the stairs was actually done back then in the original filming, but the director decided to leave it out because the strings were visible. But.... Maybe better, the film has been brutal for 73 even without the "spider walk" scene... If they'd have put that one in either it would have been rediculous, either because of those strings being visible, or too horrifying.... Considering that even without it people got sick or even fainted in the cinemas back then... 🤣 Actually the girl broke her back in the scene where she had those convulsions on the bed

For those who missed it, What is important was the child was saved no matter how powerful the adversary . Both Priest sacrificed their lives to save the child. And to offer once life to save others (to follow Christ's example,) is a sacred act which even the demon cannot win. It is also a story of the Priest whose faith was weakened bec of the tragic death of his mother. But later his faith was restored when he realized that he doesn't want the mother to experience his tragedy. The medalion is a Catholic thing. The image is a reminder to the faithful to think of Christ /God. In the opening scene on Iraq it implies that the demon has existed during primordial times. The presence of the medalion in Iraq implies that in the past Christian faithful has used the medalion as a protection against Evil. It should be noted that the possessed child/Megan has to ripped it off from the priest before the evil dpirit could possess him. Also the presence of the medalion in Iraq suggests that the battle between Good and Evil was the present even in the past.

Funfact: Due to my traumatization of the one scene in House & other horror movies I watched as a Kid like Evil Dead 2, I had never seen Exorcist till I was a teenager. I finally watched it for the first time, I was actually sent out of my moms room cuz I kept MST3king it & my mom was annoyed that I was laughing at a movie she said was one of the scariest movies she's ever seen My favorite scary movies are Evil Dead 1-3, House, Rawhead Rex, The Relic, Critters 1-3, Nightmare on Elm Street 1,3-5, Fright Night 2 & Most George Romero "of the Dead" movies (excluding Diary, Survival & Night), Return of the Living Dead, Shin Godzilla

The whole reason for being scared of a OuiJa Board is because of this movie. If she was playing chess or mouse trap then would they be scary? I think the Iuija board is made by Parker Bros. They invented it in early 1900s. It was supposed to a palour game to find your inner self. It was to show your inner self and true answers. It has nothing to do with the dead. But like I said. because it's in this movie idiots have put 2 and 2 together ang got 5.

Such a great film that is the very definition of unsettling, there's a lingering dread throughout the whole thing and as you put it unsettling is the best way to describe it rather than scary, the definition of a scary movie has definitely varied in recent years. Also, Exorcist 3 is pretty great, it's a very different film, more of a police procedural, but the book it's based on is a direct sequel to this film's story with the final two characters seen in this, but now played by different actors, and it's directed by the guy who wrote both this film and the book.

For some reason I can’t edit my comments so I woulda compiled all of what I’ve commented onto one comment but The Demon wanted to do the exorcism because it had a confrontation with Father Merrin in the past in the not so good prequel “Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist” , which you should watch, there is a 2nd version which was made with the same actors but it didn’t do as well as Dominion I think so they remade it
