I loved the detail that Madeline wrote “you are so small” on that brick because it shows, even if she looked down on Annabel for being an emotional and caring person, she still got under her skin. This normal, average, real person made the great Pharaoh Madeline feel so small she had to try and transfer that feeling to someone else.

None of the kids were adopted… Roderick explained that in the first episode, 6 kids 5 mothers. Folie à deux is a French term for delusion shared by two which is a shared psychotic disorder normally found shared by twins which Roderick and Madeline are. As they said came into the world together and leave the same way.

I appreciate how Verna respects Pym. He knows he's done horrible things and he's willing to face the consequences. He's not a good man, but he knows what's fair is fair, much like Verna herself. She's not good or bad, her whole thing is "a deal is a deal".

Whereas Roderick gambled his children's lives without hesitation. And had four more, even though he KNEW he was sentencing them to an untimely death.

I'm so glad that Dupin was the audience surrogate. He put the Usher's depravity into sharp focus. I also love how Verna kind of slapped the mementos on top of most of the graves, and threw that baggie on Fredrick's grave... But she reverently laid the Raven's feather on Lenore's grave. That was a nice, subtle piece of visual storytelling.

Verna is neutral. Not good. Not evil. Not the devil. An immortal being who likes to "experiment" with humans (the morally corrupt ones seem to be her preference) to see how they will respond/behave under different circumstances. Shes like an immortal Sociologist/Psychologist.

She's a type of cosmic being, something similar to The Endless from Dc comics. The best explanation I've read is that she's one of the beings that dwell somewhere beneath the earth, as in hollow earth, outside of time and space, a place that can only be reached from a mythical island called Ultima Thule that Poe mentioned on his poem Dreamland.

What I learned with Verna and some of the scenes throughout the show, she seems to love good moral choices. The way she defended Morelle (even warning her when she didn’t have to and didn’t even control her the way she did Frederick and the Bartenders to forcefully leave), she told Tamerlane to go apologize to her husband before the inevitable and even the way she sought to console Pym (from things in his life that he didn’t control, rather actions from people he was with) to letting Lenore know all the good she was going to do by having saved her mother (and how it even hurt having to kill her but it was the deal); She’s definitely something tied to Fate more than Death or the Devil, I want to believe.

My interpretation is that she's a spirit of karma and/or luck. She bestows good fortune, but at a price. And the severity of that price when she comes to collect is reflected by how they spend their fortune. In the case of the Ushers, all of them save for Lenore squandered it on greed.
@pabloc8808

Verna definitely understands good and evil and would prefer it if humanity chose good. However the most interesting trait about her, I think, is that she seems to despise hypocrisy, as well as people who try to avoid consequences. This is shown when she talks to Pym, she respects his choice of facing the consequences for his actions instead of making a deal to get out of it, and she respects that he'd rather suffer than betray his own "code" of never letting anyone leverage him. It also shows when she all but openly ridicules Madeline for thinking she could alter the deal.

@@agm5424 Spot on, that's why she mentions to Arthur that she saw him, and he saw her during his expedition; The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym ends with Pym meeting an ethereal being of ambiguous nature, it's not clear whether this being is good or evil. Also, in the show Verna has a line that implies she "came up" from the bowels of the earth (I can't recall the details or who she's talking to but the essence of the line stayed in my memory)

"Verna" is not the devil, or necessarily evil. SPOILERS BELOW: "Verna" is an anagram for "Raven". She is the Raven entity which exists out of time and space. She's neither good, nor evil. She's not the devil. She couldn't be the devil since she essentially has a moral code and remorse for some people (Lenore and her mom, people she asked to leave at the club in episode 2, etc.). Imo, she's more like a gray character, and kind of the Angel of Death. It'd explain why she'd also know about the Ushers' potential to be poets, or dentists (Frederick).
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 8 ай бұрын
In Poe's "The Raven", the narrator thinks the titular raven was sent by the Devil or some evil entity of that sort, because he believes the bird is tormenting him by replying to his every question with "nevermore". But the raven is never shown to be capable of thought, and the narrator knows what it is going to say, so in truth the narrator's torment is his own fault; he chooses what to ask the raven, knowing that he'll be hurt when the bird answers "nevermore". Similarly, Verna gave the Ushers a choice, she even says she doesn't care whether they'll do good or evil with all the power and the money in the world. She's not a tormentor, she's just the consequences of their actions

I think “Fate” is a better descriptor for her character, she isn’t directly in control of people’s fates, but she can make deals that change them and it’s implied that she’s always able to see people’s current or potential fates.

Ravens at one point where seen as messengers of the devil. Notice Verna didn't offer to make the deal with Roderick and his sister until after they committed the cardinal sin of murder, and mentions having to "go top-side" when talking to the Lawyer before offering him a classic deal with the Devil. Once an angel the Devil would take no joy in taking an innocent soul but would love torturing sinners. It just makes the most sense to me personally. But it's ambiguous for a reason.

The Haunting of Hill House is a remake of the book by Shirley Jackson. The Haunting of Bly Manor is based on works by Henry James, like he did with this series. Hopefully Mike Flannagan is leading us away from the whole "marvel universe" approach to making films. His series Midnight Mass is well worth watching.

Hello Gents! So happy you liked my last comment! Now that I looked it up, I'm pretty convinced that Verna is Nephthys, the Egyptian Goddess of Death. The Egyptian themes run rampant through this whole series (the golden scarab, Roderick's obsession with Egyptian artifacts, Verna mentioning papyrus), and the irony of it is? Both Usher Siblings were obsessed with immortality in some form or another, and the whole time they were dealing with Death herself, Nephthis. Edit: Nephthys was sister to Isis, the Goddess of Life. Very interesting take on siblings being polar opposites, like Roderick and Madeline. Roderick is such a weak man, a submissive to her and his own vices, while Madeline is a stone cold G.

I think it’s interesting as cold as Madeline was as a person she was always less in denial about the night at the bar. Even though it faded like a dream she never had kids and while she strove for immortality she also applied her AI tech prematurely to Lenore instead of herself. Roderick not only condemned his two actual children to an early grave over a cocktail that night he also went on to have FOUR MORE kids doomed to his poisonous money and early death. If ever there were an argument for a vasectomy.

I love how every 10 to 20 years somebody reinvents Poe for a new generation. I hope the show gets a younger generation into reading Poe, when I was a kid I had no idea who he was until the Simpsons treehouse of horror episode aired and I was obsessed. Western movies have been taking from other cultures content for years. Some of our most famous movies are remakes of Korean and Japanese movies. And now with streaming services and the entire Internet at our fingertips we’re getting to see those original movies and they’re better than the western remakes.

Glad you loved this show too! If you like sci-fi and human drama, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series from the early 2000s is amazing! The actress that plays current Madeline (Mary McDonnell) has a big role in it. It was my favorite of her television work, prior to Usher. Usher tops it because she was so gloriously awful and made such an impact in a short series - in 8-ish hours versus over 70+ episodes of BSG.

Personally, I don't think Verna is the devil. She seems to do these deals out of pure curiosity what lengths humanity will go to and she has mercy and is fair when she can - telling the bar staff to leave Perry's club, telling more than one of the Usher kids that they have a choice in their death and it doesn't have to be violent. And then letting Lenore know that she made an impact on the world, some good to reverse the evil her family has done, before she lets her just fall asleep. I agree like you said, Verna is ancient, but it's like she is an entity we don't even have a name for. She stands outside of reality, completely. Absolutely loved this series and I cannot wait to see whatever Flanagan makes next.

On the topic of doing adaptations of existing work as opposed to the constant remakes, for me, it would be a dream come true if Mike Flanagan adapted my White Harbor trilogy as a miniseries. As a Costa Rican writer that, for me, would be the very TOP in the list of my dreams. I could die happy after that.

No, she absolutely had to die. Did she deserve to die no, but based on the deal Roderick struck with Verna, Lenore had to die because she is the last of his line, of his blood, his kin. Now, what would have been really interesting is if she had not died, then we would have known that the mother had an affair at some point, and she was not the seed of Frederick. But Lenore was indeed an Usher by blood.
