I once managed a pub in the canary Islands for a Scottish lady who was steeped in Glasgow Celtic tradition with her father having former and current members round her house after finishing up in the pub he'd worked in for a few more and a sing song. One night after closing there were a chosen few left on the premises for a "few late ones" and a bit of a sing song started. A Glaswegian gentleman sang this song as well as Paddy Reilly and a few more great ballads of Irish and Scottish origin. After getting chatting with him he told me he was a season ticket holder with Glasgow Rangers but through his love of traditional music and ballads he had a lot of friends who were Glasgow Celtic season ticket holders and they went to many music sessions. He'd, like myself, learnt this song long before it was destroyed by being sang at football games and "used" as some kind of "statement". What a gentleman. I hope he and his wife and family are well and he's still singing those great ballads. Fuck the begrudgers.
