For that one puzzle at the very start it is as follows; 1) pawn to f6 is the starting move 2) you correspond with a check with the queen, which gets blocked by pawn to g6 4) Knight takes on g6, pawn on h7 captures on g6 5) queen takes rook. That puzzle shows up quite often as it is a basic tactic.

That very last mistake is super cheeky -- it would work, except for the fact that putting the king on that black square opens you up to a pin from the bishop, which halts the checkmate, allows black to force the knight-bishop trade, and then black's promotion goes through (while yours doesn't, since their king is content to sit behind your pawn).

I made the same mistake on the last one. I think the problem with that line is he can pin the knight to the king, take it, and then promote, so you actually have to play Kg6, not Kh6, as then he can't stop the mate because it's all on light squares.

Tbh I still don't really get at what's actually the goal of the puzzles. Like in some plays it just end after capturing some unit? What does that achieve if the game ist not finished?
@AdamGaffney964 жыл бұрын
@@chronchris1486 Sometimes you're trying to achieve checkmate, sometimes you're trying to force a free capture. The point of the puzzles is that it doesn't tell you to test if you see the best lines, that's why the lower rating ones are usually 1 or 2 move checkmates, and the higher ones are pushing to capture high value pieces.

The thing with puzzles is that for them to be good as puzzles they need to have exactly one correct answer that's significantly better than all alternatives. So whilst some of the defensive moves might be solid, they're likely on par with a couple moves and as such don't make for a good puzzle. A good puzzle is a nice sequence that results in winning material or gaining some sort of advantage from the only sequence. Also yes I'm rewatching this series like a year and a half later, but when I first watched this I was 600 and now I'm 1500 so I wanna see it with my new chess knowledge.

You actually had the right idea for the last puzzle, it's just there's one sneaky move that prevents it: Be3, pinning your knight so you can't immediately mate, then trading with the knight ASAP. Kg6 is therefore the move, not Kh6, as it leaves him with no way to prevent Nf7 mate next turn. Very close though!
@a4ga67ga4 жыл бұрын
For the last "fail" the reason why you move the king to g6 instead of h6 is because it'll make it so you'll have checkmate. Why? Because if you move to h6, your knight will be stuck once the black bishop moves to e3 (causing the knight to be pinned, unable to move to checkmate) Move knight to F7 and that's mate. I still don't know what the other 2 solution is with my smol brain :
