Yeah, on the one end of the spectrum you've got Tiger King, on the other, you've got the town zoo near me which is more of a refuge than a zoo. All the animals are rescues that could not survive in the wild if released (injured wildlife, seized exotic pets, etc.) or domestic farm animals (goats, sheep, chickens, etc.) who lost their homes.

Always been on the fence with this. I love the ability to observe and even interact with animals I would not normally have the chance to, but I also know that there are right ways to do it and wrong ways to do it. I grew up in Cheyenne, WY and there was a little roadside "zoo" near the airport. It was basically a bunch of chain-link kennels on dry, dusty ground. I don't remember what exactly was there, but I know there were one or two things more exotic than the antelope. Even as a kid I knew that was not a good place for them. Thankfully it was shut down before I was a teenager.

There's a lot of good places that take care of animals, a lot of them for various reasons couldn't survive on their own. Some people that are very ignorant will complain about something, like say if the big cats are just laying around, when that's literally what they would do in the wild if they were well fed and happy, and their complaints can get the places shutdown or defunded and usually all the animals are euthanized. People that claim to care about animals need to be very careful what they do. The animals in most of these places are better taken care of then they would ever be in the wild, they're spoiled and more importantly loved. Most of these places are extremely important and the people working at them are amazing and deeply caring. I thank God for them. There's no reason to be on the fence about them. Places that are bad for animals in the United States are rare. I encourage anyone that cares about animals to visit them and help them out. They're all better people, with bigger hearts then most of us. Help them financially and give them some appreciation for the tireless work they do that most of us wouldn't be capable of.

There are definitely bad places, but that's not the entirety of zoos. There are places that treat them right and preserve them from poachers and diseases. On the other hand there are some like this one on Argentina that you can take pictures with heavily drugged great cats.
