Just to be pedantic: The reason driver-thru sound systems had such bad sound (and occasionally still do) is durability. Making one that could survive the weather, wild changes in volume, 24/7 use, and so on for an affordable price resulted in low sound quality. Alternatively, steps would be taken to have GOOD sound, but then it'd be less able to deal with those conditions...which means that within a short time the sound quality would degrade and be bad anyway.

Actually the modern drive thru came about in 1931 when a *drive-in* restaurant named Kirby's Pig Stand replaced the driving in with a drive through line, associated with modern fast food. This was later popularized when adopted by Jack in the Box in 1951 and McDonald's in 1975.

The first McDonald's drive thru was started in Arizona in 1975 next to a military base. Soldiers were not allowed to be in uniform in public, so the drive thru allowed Soldiers to stay in their cars and get their food before going home.
