In life, there are honest mistakes, like forgetting to take out the trash, and then there are next-level mistakes, like forgetting to take out the trash, emptying it all over your neighbor’s lawn, and tossing the can through his window.
Sports are full of both kinds of mistakes.
Players, coaches, and fans all make them, from interfering with Moises Alou, to calling a timeout you don’t have, to not giving the ball to Marshawn Lynch at the goal line.
Today, we’re focusing on the striped mistakes.
No, not the Steelers throwbacks, the blatant mistakes from referees, umpires, and officials, and those are coming up, right after this.

The thing about the "foot in the crease" incident is that there was an addition to the rule that said that if the offensive player was collecting a rebound from his own shot, he was allowed to be in the crease. So the rule itself was followed, no matter how ass backwards it was.
@Bubba-Ho
@Bubba-Ho 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, that goal was fair, the problem people had was the inconsistency with the crease call. Some refs thought of it as any player, others knew the rule.

I totally agree this is the worst, just because of its rarity. It’s one of the most untenable feats of pro sports-only for the elite of the elite. There’s only been 23 in 140 years. Wow! That guy’s sportsmanship was “incredible.” As in, if it were me, I’d walk off the field in protest. I just wouldn’t be able to stomach the call. I can’t imagine the heartache. Not to mention during contract negotiations-not being able to say you’d done it. (And trust me, I know heartache. I’m a Rangers fan who watched us lose the WS to STL after blowing it with 2 outs in the 9th. I think this is far worse.)
@regandstuff8193
@regandstuff8193 5 жыл бұрын
The game didn't deserve to be perfect. There was a second blown call early in the game that everyone always forgets about where a Cleveland player beat out a throw to first but was called out. The perfect game should have ended there. The MLB actually made a statement about how they considered overturning the final call, but felt it was unfair to not overturn the earlier call as well if they were going to alter the game, and since the result would have been a 1-hit game either way, they didn't take action. I don't know why nobody ever mentions this in any video I've seen nor in any comment I've read. It seems like everyone just wants to forget what actually happened so they can get upset about it. I think it's justice that a game that didn't deserve to be perfect didn't end perfect.

Brett Hull maintained possession from before he had his skate in the crease, therefore a good goal. The Goring offside goal in the '80 Cup final, the Gretzky high stick in the '93 conference final, the missed Gelinas goal in the '04 Cup final, or pretty much anything that benefitted the Sharks this year were way worse missed calls

The 1993 Indianapolis 500 had a late race restart where the first place, second place, and third place cars all passed the lapped car of Stephan Gregoire (pronounced Greg-wah) under caution, which was a rules violation UNLESS the lapped car explicitly waved them by. Had the proper penalties been enforced (drive through penalties), Raul Boesel should have won the Indy 500 in 1993. The TV broadcast missed it, probably because there was a potential for a rookie winner of the Indy 500, which hadn't happened in 37 years. Boesel's car owner, Dick Simon, protested it (you can find a clip of it on KZbin for a part 2), but it fell on largely deaf ears, because people were paying more attention to Emerson Fittipaldi drinking orange juice in victory lane then (which people are still mad about).

@eddixon2015 5 жыл бұрын
@@StealthyCowbell given my somewhat useless vat of super bowl history knowledge I would break it down like this. Here are the list of games that I would consider to be great games. (For the record, I'm just looking at wikipedia and going off of personal memory and NFL films) The Super Bowls that were great games would be: Super Bowl 10 Super Bowl 12 Super Bowl 23 Super Bowl 25 Super Bowl 32 Super Bowl 33 Super Bowl 43 Super Bowl 44 And like every Super Bowl the Patriots were in minus last one: (36, 38, 39, 42, 46, 49, 51, 52) A couple of the ones that I'm on the fence about are Super Bowl 16 and Super Bowl 4, because both games were relatively close, but neither was particularly well played. So according to this rather rambling comment that you may well not have finished because you likely have better things to do with your time, I would agree with you and say that maybe a Top 5 would be better than a Top Ten.

@nathaniellevesque2782
@nathaniellevesque2782 5 жыл бұрын
@Cold Snap The Denkinger call doesn't explain how the Cardinals (a team that led the NL in batting average, stolen bases, on-base percentage, and runs scored during the regular season) only scored 13 runs over the 7 games. It also doesn't explain Jack Clark not being able to catch a pop up on the very next batter or Darrell Porter not being able to prevent a passed ball or blocking the plate when the winning run is on his way home. It also doesn't explain losing game 7 11-0. They didn't even try in game 7. They spent more time bitching about Denkinger than actually trying to win the series.

it's a 'protected' area for the goalie. If you're standing outside the crease and a goalie tries to move past you to get to make a save, there's a decent chance that the goal will be allowed and not called back for goaltender interference. If you're in the crease and you slightly impede the goalie's efforts to reach the puck, there's a strong chance it gets called back. Aside from that, it is also helpful for the goalie to know their exact position in reference to the goal without having to look back at it.

Based on the way the refs had called the rule that whole season, however, it was the wrong call. That is what upset the Sabres and rightfully so. It was a stupid rule and poorly written and communicated...but you can't change how you call it in the Finals.

Maybe if you believe the ridiculous story that there was a "memo" that was distributed to the teams privately, which is a total fabrication and cop-out of Gary Bettman's. The fact is that those exact types of plays had been disallowed all season and post-season up to that moment. The Bruins had a near identical goal disallowed in their first round series against the Hurricanes, as did Phoenix against St. Louis.

The reason why the Brett Hull goal was reviewed and stood was because the NHL issued a memo to teams stating a player who had control of the puck before they entered the crease could legally score - they declared his first blocked shot to be a pass to himself. SB Nation did a great rewinder on this play.

Actually there was some weird loophole about receiving the puck from a teammate that apparently made Hull’s goal legal. Supposedly, since he was rebounding his own shot and not receiving a pass, it was legal for him to shoot with a foot in the crease. SB Nation has a good rewind on that game which explains it

The perfect game one makes me so mad. 23 perfect games. Ever. EVER. In 210’000 games. If I was the pitcher I would have gotten thrown out because I would have attacked him. I would have beat his face in if I could have. I sort of feel bad for Jim Joyce because he knows he blew it. But god damn..

A spokesperson for the MLB said either the day of the game or the day after the game that they decided not to overturn the call. They decided that there was a second missed call earlier in the game (maybe second or third inning? I don't remember exactly) where a Cleveland hitter had beat out a throw to first but was called out. The perfect game should have ended there. The MLB felt that it was unfair to overturn the blown call in the 9th and not the earlier blown call, and the result of overturning both would have kept it a 1-hit game anyway, so they decided not to take any action over the game. It really annoys me that no one in any video or comment ever mentions this. It seems like everyone likes to forget what actually happened and just idealize the situation so they can feel justified getting mad about it. Personally, it feels like justice that if the game didn't deserve to be perfect, it didn't end perfect.

Reg and Stuff what actually happened was that he got 26 straight batters out and the umpire called the 27th safe when he was out by a mile. That’s like saying the saints shouldn’t have been mad about the blown pass interference in the nfc game because the refs missed earlier calls against them in the game. One of them ended their season. One of them cost this man a place in the history books. I don’tcare about what happened earlier in the game. I was also saying what my reaction would have been if I was the pitcher, not what should have happened.

@@lilxtra6211 Your analogy doesn't hold because we're not talking about simply winning or losing a game. We're talking about perfection - indisputable perfection. If all someone cares about is winning or losing, then yes, certain calls will affect that, but there are infinitely many factors that affect if a team wins or loses. The Saints have every right to be salty about a bad call, but it wasn't the only thing that cost them the game. They still gave up the ball, let the Rams drive down the field, gave up a field goal, gave up an interception in overtime, and gave up another field goal to lose the game. You could say that any of those things cost them the game, just as much as the blown call did. Unlike with winning and losing, there are no extra variables with the Tigers-Indians game because we're not talking about something achievable in an infinite number of ways - we're talking about perfection, which can only happen in one specific way. I'm amazed that you think that one bad call (the should-have-been hit) is excusable and that we should forget about it, but two bad calls (should-have-been hit and the final call) or zero bad calls (reversing both calls) are unacceptable. The Tigers already gave up what should have been a hit, meaning that their only way to achieve perfection was already forfeit. It didn't deserve to be a perfect game and thankfully wasn't. If it had gone down as perfect, it would be undeserving to have that honor amidst the other perfect games that actually earned perfection.

I remember the aftermath so well, only Seattle fans felt that call was right, the team knew they got away with it, the Packers and the fans thought it was wrong, and every neutral person thought it was wrong, every media pundit thought it was wrong. At Seattle is a nightmare place for the Packers to play at for some reason.

There are honest mistakes, like forgetting to take out the trash, then are next level mistakes, like calling a ground ball into left field a bloop into right followed by saying that the runners already on first and second advanced to first and second on a passed ball.
