Oh man, this reminds me of how much potential Finn had as a character and how they did absolutely nothing with it. By the end of the trilogy, his main job was yelling other people's names.

This was one thing about The Last Jedi I wish had been continued. His interactions with the thief and discovering the cash belching war machine running underneath the never-ending conflict was SUPER interesting and I looked forward to seeing if he became a neutral party. But nah. Completely dropped the thread.

@@Paulafan5 I was expecting Kylo Ren to grow more powerful and have a two-on-one saber battle against Rey and Finn (like Darth Maul or Asajj Ventress fights Anakin and Obi-Wan). Instead they kind of wandered around in all directions with the plot and ended with "Palpatine is back and Rey is the embodiment of all Jedi because this is Highlander or something." I also expected Rey and Ren both meaning "king" or "ruler" in other languages to become significant. Maybe even throw in another Jedi/Sith named Rex at some point.

Honestly the "happens" joke is perfectly justified. Rey is another in a too-long list of protagonists who never do any protagonising. They just get bumped along by the universe, whispering "You're the Chosen One!"

@@darwinism8181 with Luke there was tons of doubt and he spent years developing his force abilities and training to be anything resembling a Jedi. before that he was a farmer that liked to fly as a hobby. his first scene using a light saber was him getting shot repeatedly by a little training drone while he was learning to use the basic abilities of the force. if Luke had fought Vader in episode 4 then Luke would have been cut down instantly, before he could even swing his light saber. there was one big "because the movie needs to happen" moment: Luke buying the droids, everything else was generally a natural flow of events resulting from the droids falling specifically into Luke's hands. Anakin also spent years training and before that he was a pod racer that had really good reflexes. again Anakin was like 10 years old in the first movie so there was ZERO chance of him winning any fights. he wasn't shown as being properly trained until the second movie where he is well on his way to being a full adult. the big "because the movie needs to happen" moment there was simply Anakin being discovered by the jedi. in both previous cases, Luke and Anakin just barely had hints of weak jedi abilities, and no one was calling either of them "the chosen one" or any of that crap. Rey just kind of realized she was a jedi while sitting in a chair and started casually manipulating people's minds, using force pulls, and was suddenly an expert at fighting with a light saber. there was no training even implied, she just suddenly had a whole bunch of jedi master skills out of nowhere. and, i think the video did a decent job of listing off all of the "because the movie needs to happen" moments there.

And also happens to be a space ship mechanic after only ever ripping apart the dead hulk of a Star Destroyer.... . And also happens to speak with a British accent on Jakku even thought they don't show any other characters from that planet with British accents. . And also happens to be able to START the Millennium Flacon after it's been sitting in a junk yard for... years.... decades? Don't advanced space ships have any kind of security like... I dunno... a key at the very least? Or biometric login? I can't even sign into my Fantasy Football league without a complex password. . And of course the Falcon's fuel cells are all fully charged and ready to go, and the dry desert air and sandstorms one would expect on a sand planet haven't dried out any of its components or clogged any of it's systems. . I agree that conveniences and contrivances are needed to set things up. In Star Wars IV, I always thought it was too convenient that Leia's ship was attacked right near Tatooine, where her twin brother Luke just happened to live, and the droids just happen to land within about 10-20 miles of Luke's home, and his uncle just happened to need an interpreter droid, etc. But ultimately, once they got the story moving, it made sense that they found Han Solo where they did, that he had a motivation to help them (owing money to Jabba the Hut), and that Leia's capture led the Empire to destroy Alderaan, etc.

criticising force awakens's coincidences is 100% valid. Generally you're allowed to have a couple coincidences as your inciting event to get the ball rolling, and every major coincidence from then on is a problem. That's not to say that having 1 big coincidence after the beginning automatically makes it bad, it depends on how big of a coincidence, how important it is to the story and how many of them you have. But TFA has so many coincidences that are literally astronomically unlikely, you probably only touched on half of them. You can have a lot of these plot points without them being huge coincidences, it just takes time and effort to fit all the pieces together in the writing room

The thing about plot conveniences like in the "happens" section is that even the best movies have one or two small ones. That's not a bad thing. It becomes a problem when there's several dozen of them. When the majority of the plot can be described as "so the movie can happen", that's a sign that the whole movie has kinda become one giant excuse for itself. So anyway I bet you can't make a pitch meeting of Matilda because it's too good.
@The8merp

The rule of thumb for coincidences is that they should only occur in the first act of the movie: it's okay for a contrivances to change the direction of the story or bring our characters together, but not to resolve the central problem on behalf of our characters. I think we can all agree improbable things do happen in real life, and a storyteller isn't responsible for an alternate timeline where some of the story didn't happen. Most of the coincidences in this movie are inoffensive on their own, but it becomes a problem when they only exist to set up another coincidence. As happenstance adds up, the characters lose agency in their story. That being said, it is not necessarily a coincidence for the story to grant our hero an unexpected reward for a choice made on their journey: a classic example would be the hero saving a stranger who happens to be able to help them in return.

Point taken. Day to day life is when there isn't a set of circumstances or coincidences that happen. An adventure happens when a few things align to start a plot. As the movie is about the story, it's totally OK to start any story off with "so a bunch of things happened and that's how we got here". Any other happenstance should only occur when motivations and goals of various actors align. E.g. the emperor is moving a droid on a cargo ship, and there are a variety of interested parties who want that droid. This creates a nexus in which characters can intersect.

Hey Ryan, it was great seeing Producer Guy and Screenwriter Guy on Zoran's Kill Count for Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash over on Dead Meat this weekend. Kinda makes me wonder if we'll be seeing any new Pitch Meetings for horror movies in the lead up to Halloween. Maybe a movie with a lot of kills that would need counting? James and / or Zoran might "Be Good People" to lend a hand to Producer Guy or Writer Guy if such a task is needed...

In retrospect of whether it holds up: I was a super fan of the franchise and probably would have been frustrated with your take at the time, but, you know, your TFA video and the line “you forgot to pay that off, didn’t you” pretty much sums up why you were right all along Somehow after I watched Alias and Lost and Star Trek 2009 I still believed that JJ Abrams had a plan

Hi Ryan. I absolutely love your videos. You make me laugh all the time so thank you. I have two questions for you. Question 1: When doing pitch’s for book adaptations, do you ever read the books in order to gain a greater understanding of the story? Question 2: a couple of years ago, a KZbinr called the Nostalgia Critic did a parody of your pitch meetings in his review of Alien 3. I was wondering if you had seen his parody and if so, what you thought of it.
