@@mosesking2923 pretty sure they wouldn’t want theology anywhere near the government. “A tool for power, dominance, and control” - so believed the emperor Constantine. He literally built a religion that all the splintered, fractured groups in the empire would follow with the express purpose of squelching dissent and assuring compliance. He himself was an initiate of Sol Invictus and never really converted - he went as far as creating a myth of a “vision” and a “conversion” but in truth it was just a really compelling story. One of my issues with Christian nationalism, is that it hinges on what Christianity is. And Christianity is regularly redefining itself, with heavy weight coming from the culture of those in that faith. There is a constant and complicated interplay between our culture, and our religions. With both of those shifting and evolving over time. Claiming that process is in one direction only, would be ludicrous. I have no problem admitting that we draw aspects of our culture from Christianity. That said, if they want to imply that the bible provides the epitome of moral structure, I will strongly disagree. Maybe Christian nationalists can harmonize their religion with modern ideologies. But to pretend that the bible is the primary source for our nations founding ideals, including the secular ones, is not taking history seriously. In our politics, if you can't defend a position without appealing to the authority of the bible, I see no reason I should take that position seriously.

Great series, thank you! I am an alleged descendant of John Adams and after hearing claims that our Founding Fathers intended the U.S. to be a Christian state in the early 2000s, I've done some research on Adams, Washington, and Jefferson in particular and there is a degree of contradiction depending on the source, but I get the impression that Washington was a devout attendee of Sunday church, though he did not express religious views or opinions publicly. Jefferson was a "deist" who believes God created existence, but never communicated or intervened with humankind or performed miracles and he openly criticized religion in general. Adams held similar views to Benjamin Franklin about the role of church in society (he also denounced Thomas Paine, like Franklin), but attended a Unitarian church which denied the divinity of Christ and did not believe in the holy trinity.

In general, I don’t think we should be as concerned with tradition and the founding father’s intentions for our nation, so much as we should be focused on the freedom and rights of humanity as a whole. Instead of making America “great again”, we should be trying to make it better than it ever was before. And not just better for a small group of people, better for everyone as a whole.

Aho to this....this is absolutely one of the rabbit holes my mind keeps wandering down. Why do we keep insisting that all these old texts are authoritative over a completely different world and culture now? But then I look at my own historical studies that are infusing my work...and get that these beliefs are SOOO embedded into our cultural DNA through all the stories that have been told and retold for thousands of years until people do not even see how they are driving us. So I have made it my mission to help people see these invisible beliefs our world is built on. Because then maybe we can see how ol' fashioned they are, kick them to the curb and create new stories!
@stevepowsinger73326 күн бұрын
So you want to make the whole WORLD better? A noble gesture and we certainly must try to be helpful, both for the people and the earth. Nevertheless, Americans and their allies must first ensure that their respective countries are mindful of their material sufficiency and be protective of national security. The world is a dangerous and fragile place, with wars going on constantly and we cannot look out for other countries so much that we neglect ourselves. I agree it needs to be a better place while mindful that we could slip backwards by focusing too much blame on ancestors as they were moving forward slowly with the advance of science and the Industrial Revolution.

They had other slogans on their currency before that. In 1935 they had E. Pluribis Unum on some of there currency, coat of arms, etc, which is Latin for "Out of many, One" It is noteworthy to mention that in early Judaism they were not monotheistic the way we think of monotheism. They were Henotheistic which means they acknowledged many gods but followed and worshiped one. The 1st commandment echoes this thought, "thou shalt have no other Gods before me, for I, the lord your God, am a jealous God" This implies God, and those he was addressing, the Israelites, were well aware of the fact that there were other Gods. Yahweh was specifically the patron deity of the Israelites, (not the world, much more the universe) Chemosh was the God of the Moabites, as another example, and defeated Yahweh in a battle... archaeology confirms this on the discovery of the Mesha Stele (Moabite stone) Yahweh is not omnipotent! He is also a prophetic failure. in 2 Kings 3, Yahweh's prophecy of victory is a failure, and a Moabite god's wrath drives Israel into retreat. In the Moabite Inscription, Chemosh's wrath ends in Yahweh's defeat and the fleeing of Israel. Yahweh is not some sort of omnipotent or omniscient being in much of the Bible. This is completely contradictory to Christian theology and the nature of God.

In 1350 BCE Amenhotep the fourth created a monotheistic god from the solar disk, then known as the Aten. Some of Amenhotep's work can be found in the bible as Psalm 104 also known as "The Great Hymn to the Aten". Christians pay homage to this man after a prayer, "Amen". Today our hearts bring back the Light in a celebration from Scandinavia which lasts over several days during the winter solstice known as "Yule". Predating Christianity and originating thousands of years ago. Known as a Norse festival called "jol" named after the Norse god Odin. The Norse being the ancestors of Vikings with the ancestor of the Vikings dating back over 12000 years ago in Scandinavia. The rebirth of the Sun being the oldest known winter solstice celebration, we celebrate the rebirth and the warmth of the Sunshine (Love, Peace, Happiness, Goodwill to man)… Have a Wonderful Winter's Solstice. Great video. So happy to see this addressed. I am a US History teacher, and I proudly teach the truth that there is zero question that this was quite intentionally the first secular nation established since before the Crusades. Part of this was due to what the Puritans did in Massachusetts. They fled England over religious persecution and came here only to create an even more struct theocracy. Rhode Island, Connectucut, and New Hampshire were all founded by people who fled, or were banished from Massachusetts for rejecting Puritanical rule. Our founders knew this. They also knew the Salem wutch trials were caused by religious hysteria and the gulibility it cultivates. Religion embraces whatever power helps it retain its own power, thus our secular nation and potent First Amendment. I don't agree that many in power share Franklin's view. While those in power have no qualms with personal immorality, I think many of them wholeheartedly believe their own myths. That is why they are trying to end abortion and reverse marriage equality.
@casper-z9rkls6gl28 күн бұрын
The Founders were also well aware that The Protectorate "republic" of England, Scotland and Ireland failed because people had been stifled by Oliver Cromwell's theocratic, puritanical rule. Long-cherished traditions like theater, folk dance, Christmas and other holidays and festivals were banned because they were "pagan", and drinking and fashionable clothes curtailed. So fed up were the English that they begged Charles II to return and govern them as king not long after Cromwell's death. And then there's the Thirty Years War, in which a third of the population of the Holy Roman Empire (Germany) perished over religion and politics.

Oh, I have no doubt as to your 'pride' in what you teach....but there are serious questions as to whether it's the truth. The more you read, the more you see that this was never envisioned as anything else BUT a Christian nation. I bought into your nonsense when I was younger. I felt you guys had to be right....I mean, who would be so foolish as to tell lies that could be so easily dispelled? Then, lo and behold, I looked for myself...and discovered that you people are simply offering up a version of history that you prefer. This place was OVERWHELMINGLY Christian. While not a true theocracy, it was Christian, to its' very core and rind. And until recently, nobody had any problem with it. At the time of World War ll, FDR-not just a Democrat, but the GREATEST of the Democrats-issued New Testaments to our embarking troops. Amazing that a man in his position wouldn't have been aware that we're supposed to be completely secular....You people are just lucky that Americans don't read...you'd never have gotten away with this lie for this long if people simply looked for themselves...but some enterprising Republican politician might well benefit from bringing some of this to the attention of the public.

I missed these videos when they first went up because I was visiting my family for Thanksgiving, but I just want to address Benjamin Franklin's contention that we need Christianity to promote virtue. As a Christian, I do think that if you obeyed every teaching of Jesus, you would be a virtuous person. However, I also see wonderful people like Kristi who are atheists and some not-so-wonderful people who are Christians, so I have to admit that simply being part of Christianity isn't a guarantee of virtue. To get any virtue out of Christianity, we have to let God change us into the person that he wants us to be. God always gives us the option to stay the way we are and remain immature in our faith. There are definitely parts of my life that I need to submit to God's transformation, such as the anger I feel when people don't treat me the way I want to be treated.

Read the bible... he regularly condemns people to hell, kills trees and pigs, advocates theft, only selectively heals, advocates for antifamilial attitudes, declares to bring the sword, enacts public violence and vandalism, defends the torah with its institutions of slavery and genocide, and tells the poor not to worry about their concerns but be like him and live off other people. One of the greatest anathemas is the idea of gentle jesus meek and mild!

I stayed away from your site for a while due to the negativity I felt it had toward people who believe in Christ. I do very much appreciate what you are focusing on right now as I am terrified of this white Christian nationalism. Thank you for taking this on.

personal belief in any gods is generally fine ... until people start preaching it as truth without evidence and cramming it into society and government , a line has been crossed. especially here in America where we have a first amendment that prohibits religious governing bodies. thought speech and assembly are protected... action on the other hand... actions have consequences. it is a shame you feel negativity. keep in mind it is not often the Person that people are negative towards. it is the long history of harm the religion has, the overwhelming current harm some Christians are doing today. there is a fundamental difference in the acceptable level of epistemology that certain people have that the religious do not; we are talking a 400 year gap in epistemology. it can be very frustrating to talk to people seemingly from a different time period. no negativity here. just conversation.

Thank you for the video series. The truth you speak of in this part about the Founding Fathers hurts for Christians. Their version of how the American Government was founded contrasts with what really happened. When you think how much of the Declaration of Independence and Constitution we were taught in school as compared to the whole documents, it is only a fraction. And then you add facts like the "Third verse" to the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key, you realize how slavery and racism prevailed at that time. The other parts to this series about Christian Nationalism will be interesting.

What they never teach in high school history class due to political correctness: Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Paine, James Madison, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Alexander Hamilton were Deists, Unitarians, Quakers (or outright crypto-atheists).

So informative. I will be re-watching and taking notes. This helps me communicate the dangers of this christian national BS. I believe there are many podcasters and influencers being supported by christian nationalists and paid to put out their propaganda in a manner that supports your theory about cowboys. I am amazed at the nullification of critical thinking due to these media outlets pushing that tough guy cowboy attitude. This is only my personal opinion.

I first read about this romanticization of cowboy culture in the book "Jesus and John Wayne" by Kristin Kobes Du Mez. It was such an eye opening read on how this happened! Higly recommend it

I'm enjoying very much hearing your perspective. I'm atheist myself, but I came from a religious background that was far less anti- free thought and intellectualism . I'm grateful for you educating me on the exodus from a much more restrictive background.

Kristi, as I have commented before, your mode and manner of instruction is a great vehicle to get the truth and supporting information to our hearts and more importantly, our minds. I am always anxious to view each of your segments and it’s weird that it always seems like you are always talking to me. I am sure others pick up on that as well. This series on religious nationalism is so full of irrefutable historical facts and I am watching each segment over again to make sure your words are fully ingrained. You are absolutely the best and if this is what you having ADHD is like, I want some of that. Thank you.

You did a fantastic job covering the political aspects of Christian Nationalism. I want to help fill a critical gap from the religious aspect. I don’t know if you intend to cover this but the First and Second Great Awakening movements are essential to understanding Christianity in America. I hope you can find some time to cover these topics.

Yes, there is so much to uncover. The biggest piece I keep coming back to in my research and understanding is that Christianity was used by Constantine back in 330 A.D. in order to solidify his hold over people. He saw it the one male God religion, to be a unifying force for the Roman empire. How can we ever see Christianity as anything but this type of power for the elite on top and that is what I will be diving into on my channel and Substack and already have. But as I keep saying, absolutely adore your brain, Christi Anne thank you so much for all you’re doing and hope we can join forces.

As an older American, i can assure you, we were taught about freedom of religion! Being that most of my ancestors migrated to USA for RELIGIOUS reasons- they were living in a place where their religion was not tolerated… IMO, equality of all people of the USA was the ultimate “Ideal” - the founders knew they could not see the future, so they decided to frame the Ideal of equality & freedom… 💜💙🤍❤️💃⚖️ - prior to the Dobbs decision, the Constitution EXPANDED rights through the years… with Dobbs, for the first time, rights were REDUCED. 🙏 thank you for your work

Thank you for the excellent video. My mom, who is a hardcore evangelical that wants God back in our government ……..meanwhile she is always criticizing/bad mouthing other Christian denominations. Last month, I asked her which of the hundreds of variants of Christianity she would like to see in charge of our government, and how it would square with her Pentecostal beliefs if, for example, it was Catholic or Jehovah's Witness. I think that question really made her think. A theocracy is a terrible form of government.

Interesting! I'm British and to my way of thinking, the USA sort of had two founding points. The 18th century Founding Fathers were, as noted in the video, Enlightment Rationalists and thoroughly secular. They wrote the US constitution and Declaration of Independence. The USA, though, brought together 13 pre-existing colonies. The oldest colony was Massachussetts founded a century earlier by English settlers: the Pilgrim Fathers. They were stongly Protestant. So two foundings, two groups of fathers, one religious and one not. The founding that matters though, is the 18th century one. It actually set up the new nation. I suspect Christian nationalists are (deliberately?) confusing the two foundings.

Very interesting video. Growing up mormon I was definitely taught that the constitution was inspired by God, and many christian nationalist ideas are baked into the religion. Also the Book of Mormon was produced during this time of colonialism and the Indian removal act. As someone who researches Mormon history and the origins of the movement I'm very familiar with all these concepts portrayed. These ideas are still very prevalent today with top leaders still encouraging people to vote republican, and for the entire gospel being about evangelizing, taking over the world pretty much with lds ideology. I heard someone say that christian evangelism is just the intellectual arm of colonialism and many of these manifest destiny ideas still persist in "traditional" families. I do love the fact that you aren't asking for money. The ex mormon channels I typically watch are constantly pining for donations. If I'm not giving money to a church why would I give it to people who discredit them? Your videos are very thought provoking. I think you are doing a wonderful job. Keep it up!
