I think Mistral's monetisation plan is very fair and reasonable, it's not really foss but closer to RHEL in that you need a commercial license, while individual and research users get access to everything they'd ever need, plus they seem to be positioned as the French/European champion for AI, so they can count on some government backing. I think Meta meanwhile is trying to burn as much money as possible and position themselves as the 2nd place player behind open AI, use permissive licensing to spread as fast as possible while creating a community of enthusiasts, researchers and tinkerers, but I think they'll do a rug pull like open AI eventually (the "open" originally meant open source), certainly won't trust them unless they come up with a roadmap for making it financially sustainable.

But after they become market leader they introduce some really useful features which are only available inside of a subscription eco system. So they only do this non-subscription thing temporarily to fight competitors and when competitors disappeared they do what their competitors done before. Because subscriptions are the number 1 best thing for shareholders. Like Uber is just a really expensive and labour exploiting taxi company and all streaming services now are as expensive as pay tv was before. No innovation, just temporary lure.
