@@casualuser5527they have high margins on smartphones and smartphones have a shorter life-cycle than these sort of wearable accessories, typically. People will happily put up with a slowed-down smartwatch, but they break and replace phones more frequently. And if you have a galaxy ring, you're way more likely to buy a new Samsung phone, since you're locked into the ecosystem by that point. Recurring revenue even without an explicit subscription.

On the other hand (see what I did there) you need to have a Samsung phone. Which I currently do, but I don't want to lock myself in for a future purchae, so after I thought it over for a long while, I'm now trying the sizing kit for the Ultrahuman Ring.

I think Mistral's monetisation plan is very fair and reasonable, it's not really foss but closer to RHEL in that you need a commercial license, while individual and research users get access to everything they'd ever need, plus they seem to be positioned as the French/European champion for AI, so they can count on some government backing. I think Meta meanwhile is trying to burn as much money as possible and position themselves as the 2nd place player behind open AI, use permissive licensing to spread as fast as possible while creating a community of enthusiasts, researchers and tinkerers, but I think they'll do a rug pull like open AI eventually (the "open" originally meant open source), certainly won't trust them unless they come up with a roadmap for making it financially sustainable.

Interesting. It seems as if Samsung uses the traditional route of tech companies these days. They make a product with a better user experience (no subscription fees). But after they become market leader they introduce some really useful features which are only available inside of a subscription eco system. So they only do this non-subscription thing temporarily to fight competitors and when competitors disappeared they do what their competitors done before. Because subscriptions are the number 1 best thing for shareholders. Like Uber is just a really expensive and labour exploiting taxi company and all streaming services now are as expensive as pay tv was before. No innovation, just temporary lure.

It’s because most people don’t know about oura. Samsung is throwing their weight around here.

Apple follows, like most, they followed the big phone trend after mocking it for years, they followed the smartwatch trend, they will follow foldable phones and of course a ring. Apple users will have to wait till Apple's ring to get the features avail elsewhere for years now as with their watch etc it's own brand will get access to full features that they deny others. So maybe 4 years wait for a equally featured ring that runs with iPhones. Must be a annoying to have to wait so long for hardware innovation.

Maybe the Ring is not for me. I can't even wear my wedding ring everyday because wearing a ring's uncomfortable for me.
