My 7 still does everything I need. The non replaceable lens on the 8 meant that was never a consideration. I was genuinely tempted by the 9 until I saw numerous owners reporting how glitchy it was. Anything that doesn't work properly frustrates the hell out of me which seems to be nearly everything these days.

I have just upgraded from a hero 7 black (which i had for 2 years and never had any issues with it i loved that camera) to a hero 9, i took it out for a test run on my push bike yesterday and it is amazing!!! It did not freeze up on me once, the touchscreen is a little fiddly - but the touchscreens always have been on the Gopros with them being so small. One thing this guy did not mention is the microphone, it’s had a massive upgrade so when you’re cycling or if it’s windy you don’t get that wind tunnel affect when you play back your footage - and the mic now has built in drainage so when you submerge then come back out of the water theres no interference. I think this guy needs to do a little more research the next time he vlogs about cameras.

I use the hindsight all the time. I use the camera when fishing. You newer know when something cool will happen. So the camera is on in hindsight mode and when something happens, I only press “go”, and get the 30 seconds before. This is a killer feature for me.

I have the same problems with the touch screen and losing clips. I got home the other day and had about five clips in a row that wouldn’t even open. The other thing I don’t like is the microphone on the media mod. I wish it was omnidirectional. I sometimes aim the camera at myself, but usually talk from behind it. If I accidentally have it in the wrong mode, the clips are useless. I usually plug in a small external mic for that reason.

I can agree that the touch bug is annoying, but it seems to be less buggy when you are holding the gopro in your hands rather on a mount which is almost unusable without you touching the gopro (grounding issues?) At 9:00, I want to disagree about the size. If you compare the hero 7 against the 8 and 9 with the included housing the size gap gets less noticeable and with the hero 8 and 9 you don't need to have a housing to mount it compared to the hero 7 so that's a big pro to me.

I just started a daily vlog but I don't have a lot of experience with cameras or film making so I got a Gopro 9 just to focus on getting my mind wrapped around the story telling aspect of a daily vlog--- how to keep it interesting and such. This video really helped me out! I've used the Gopro 9 for about 3 months now and have made about 20 videos. Now that I feel like I have the editing, daily vlog work flow and basic videography under my belt with the Gopro 9, I think that I'm ready to move onto a more serious camera! after going through every gopro from 2hd to hero 7 (i skipped on the 8) I just picked up the 9 for the 5k. I did the update, and so far it has been working great. The only camera I think comes close, (and maybe the one you are thinking of) is the insta360 one R. I love that thing. No issues whatsoever. I think the only thing gopro has over them is the color science.

The SnapMounts kicks ass! For mtn biking I can wear a chesty under my jersey (and not look like a dork) with a SnapMount and then "snap" my GoPro on my chest but then I have another mount in my fanny pack so I can pop it off and transfer the GoPro for a rear view super fast. Since the angle works out to be the same, all I have to be sure is that the GoPro is upside down on the chest, but rightside up on the back.

@@afunfox7865 Mountain biking, but yea, the chesty with the SnapMount GoPro mount, then snap it on the outside of my jersey. You MUST have the chesty. If you watch David's first eview of the SnapMount, you can't use it without the chesty or it just bounces around on your shirt. I use the lanyard mount without the lanyard and I slide that into a pocket on my fannypack or backpack.

I had a terrible time with the gp9 skiing. Same frustrations you mentioned, losing clips, had to reset very often by pulling the battery out, wasted my friends time so often on the slopes to set up shots with that touchscreen not responding. Sometimes I would start a clip and and the go pro would just shut down 30 second in the recording . Full day of ski requires about 4 batteries and you don't even get that much footasge because of all these issues. On the other hand I bought the snap mounts system and I really enjoy it. One thing I wish i knew before buying into it thou is that it's not really compatible with the gp9 media mod so iend up never using the mod.

I got my hero 9 in Nov and I didnt really notice the buggyness that was mentioned here, this is also my first gopro. The touchscreen is def a lil funky to deal with altho it has seemed to improve overtime as he said as well...all in all I love this camera!

The touchscreen is a grounding issue and none of the firmware so far, including 1.52 has fixed it. You only think it is fixed because after the update, you would hold the GoPro with one hand and use the screen with the other hand and everything seems to work fine. But, if you put the GoPro back on its mount and operate the touchscreen with only one hand touching the GoPro, the screen becomes unresponsive again.

I love the hindsight! I do a lot of skateboarding and it’s nice not to have to sort through 20 min of footage to find the clips I want. I can just choose when I’m doing tricks, so if I land it I just hit record and it’s there without getting all the misses. The only problem I’ve found is it’s hard to get out of hindsight once you’re in the setting. It’s alittle annoying but it’s not horrible

Got a Hero 9 recently and it's on update 1.60.0 now! I haven't used it yet really but so far the touch screen has been pretty responsive. There's still that half-second delay but it's not laggy at all.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I won’t make a very long post but I have a lot of issues with GoPro 9 and 8 when recording continuously for a long time (about an hour). I record while running and I point the camera to get the point of view so there is nobody in the frame. I have not found anyone in the KZbin review world that tests these camera for continues recording over a long period of time. Everything works great for short shots. But it all goes terribly wrong when you record longer. 1. The image stabilization is not very good when there is nobody in the frame. So to answer your question, this is why someone would want gimble. 2. The horizon leveling starts to fail after about 30 minutes of recording in action. The horizon banks more than 10 degrees. GoPro had suggested that the Max Lens Mod would fix this. But it did not. 3. Recording fails often. I have tried to use different memory cards but on many occasions it stops recording and the file is corrupted. 4. The GoPro software is equally buggy as the camera. Though this has nothing to do with long recordings. I hope you find this helpful. And thank you for all the great reviews.

I've stayed with the Hero 8 and been using that daily since October 2019. I can't tell you in words how much stress it's caused me but I love it's convenience and size, I can't say the same for it's reliability. I still struggle to beat the reliability of the Hero 4 Black. Ok it had to be in a case to be waterproof but as a vlogging camera it never let me down. I can't understand how GoPro has managed to up the spec but lose that reliability and not have a backlash from it. Great video!!!

One thing that helped me with the touchscreen issue was making sure you hold the camera with one hand and use the touch screen with the other. I have no idea why it works (some sort of grounding, I don’t know) but it works. I pinch the camera between my pointer and thumb and it just works

just did the firmware update. I agree the touch screen fits the "ugly" category. I haven't had the "freezing" issue. Another ugly is the slow upload to their site and it has to be plugged into power to do that. I find that feature not useful when I can pull the SD card and move files much much faster.

Totally with you! That’s why I’ve never done their subscription service. I backup files on hard drives so I have them. Also, once you upload a ton of footage to their servers, they have you locked into that $50 a year subscription. If that’s where you’re storing your files, then to leave the service would mean to leave your files. No thank you!

GoPros are highly overpriced and hyped-out just like Iphones. Even the image quality isn't that wonderful, as they advertise (b/c these are post-processed heavily).. If you don't have tone of free time, powerful PC and experience in advanced post-processing (as most youtubers advertising GoPros do, because they make a living out of those YT videos) to "make" them "pretty", you will get just a standard quality video, as with many other, much cheaper action-cameras. GoPro 7 is my first and is going to be my last GoPro for sure. Before GP I had a Lamax action cam - 3x cheaper, same image quality, very similar bugs.. I thought I would make a huge difference buying GoPro.. Nah.. similars bugs, just for 3x more $$$. Now I regret I didn't choose DJ Osmo.. :( The worst thing is GoPro releases new models but doesn't give a sh*t about fixing the previous ones first!

Dude, I've never bought myself such a tiny expensive item, Truly Stoked while I waited for is arrival, then I realize the FRUSTRATINGLY glitchy screen 😠, & Almost a week later I was having the freeze issues, major over heating issues while charging only @ 1st then during use & problems when powering on (like freezing) I kept thinking it was me being a goober somehow, (so didn't want to think that this camera I've been wanting Soo badly for so long was this faulty). Also, Im extremely curious to know if any 1 has experienced a loud alarm like sound @ anytime during it's temper tantrums?? I have twice, freaked me out the 1st time. Totally Bummed me out, I Really want to feel just as excited as I was before I got it. Another case of fantasy being better than reality??? I've not used it as much as I had wanted to just to avoid 😠 & that suks!. The case isn't the limiting factor, their disability to produce stuff on their on and the reliance on the other companies to produce their boards, chips, sensors, batteries is what kills them. All the GP1 gopros are kinda useless and this one, like the rest of them, uses it. Tech from 2016.

Hero 9 locked up several times on my Death Valley trip - had to pull the battery each time. Hard to do while it's mounted to the windshield and I'm driving in a caravan on nasty cliff roads. Touch screen is horrible. I use the iPhone to control it instead. Video quality... Amazing!!! TimeWarp stability while driving over boulder-ridden roads - phenomenal. Just need them to fix the locking up problem. Oh, and just bought the SnapMount pro - thanks for the info.

I did have audio problems with the Rhode mic and with the mic out of the GoPro unit. I got Hero 9 a few months ago and I haven't had a any issues. I have had it get hot but now I shoot in 4k 24 frames per second and now it get warm but not hot like when shooting in 5k. It does have the latest up date. I never had any problems with my Hero 7.

There are a few things gimbles would still be useful for with a gopro. For example: It gets very specific shots that you otherwise wouldn't be able to get. It's usefulness hasn't been totally eliminated, however it's been somewhat marginalized by the existence of hypersmooth 3.0. It definitely lost it's main function.

Solid question Javier and I should probably do an update video on the Hero 9. They've made a bunch of updates to the 9 and it's a lot better than it was, but the Hero 10 with the GP2 chip is still much snappier and responsive

Good info! Let me tell you where "hindsight" is excelling...Fly Fishing. As soon as a fish strikes a surface fly, you activate the hindsight recording, and you have killer footage of the take. Before hindsight, it was so incredibly unpredictable to get a surface strike on film.

how do you activate the hindsight recording while you are worrying about the fish? is it a preset function and then you just hit record on the gopro?

@@allenmichaelcapo6747 You enable hindsight in the settings. Then you leave the GoPro "on", and start fishing. You have to mount the GoPro pointing at your subject. I have it on my chest. After a fish slams my dry fly, I have 15 seconds to press the record button, so that offers a small buffer to make sure I pay attention to the fish first. It usually works out.

I will take the Insta360 One R over the others; It has shortcomings, but I still like it for all I can do with the shots I get from it. I like the One X and X2 as well, but for format like the Heros, helmet mount, etc. the R is it.

Good Vid, new sub here, 1 month in on Hero9 using media mod and GoPro sanctioned sandisk cards. Camera is extremely buggy (f/w is 1.52). Black screen crash happens often, often it has cost me the shot which is really, really frustrating... Powering off usb-c may or may not induce a crash as well it’s about 20% crashing on external power via media mod. I had to get a Field monitor (came today) to see recording output when Hero9 is gimbal mounted (Crane m2) on a pole since they dropped Quik Live Recording.. Now I found the hdmi output mode gets stuck on the camera side, it thinks it is still connected but it’s not sending hdmi output, even when the cable is unplugged / plugged back in. It actually required several restarts (4x over a 45min period) to shoot 15mins footage today - again super frustrating.. This cam, when it works has great stabilization, horizon leveling is 👍👍👍 Still need a gimbal for some things (I’m shooting close in action/animal vids) but the smoothing in Hero9 is just impressive. Wish it offered horizon leveling in Every Lens mode not just the one but love that it does have it.. GoPro needs to step up their game a lot and make this right for Hero9 customers.. Also considering returning it not sure what else has that level of smoothing / horizon leveling ?

Man, I’m super bummed to hear that Ben, that’s a rough set of issues to be having for the investment that you put in. I’m with you though, they should be fixing this for people, but unfortunately six months later, if it hasn’t been fixed by a firmware update yet, I’m not sure it will be. I assumed they’re already moving most of their attention and resources to the Hero 10. Sorry man, that’s a massive bummer to hear!

I get my GoPro Hero 9 tomorrow, and I am excited for it , I currently vlog with a Canon M50 with a sigma lens adapted to it and sometimes my cell phone so the size of this compared to those won't bug me at all, and considering this video was made and now the 1.52 software is updated, I should be good to go haha.

Two years ago, I decided to buy the Hero 7 after seeing YOUR video on the “best settings”. I bought it, mostly impressed, but I had to pull out the battery often (just something I “figured out” on my own) which was super annoying when you have a case on it and all and the touch screen felt like something from 20 years ago. I got nervous because I thought it was just my device but nope. 😂 It’s unfortunate that these issues have gotten worse with the more recent ones.

I share your freezing GP7 experience. The worst being GP is not acknowledging the problem exists. Currently I had my 4th GP7 (3 replacement) and still the same. This is preventing me from buying new GP cameras.

@@trassy I have same issues with my GP7.. and I came to conclusion.. GoPros are highly overpriced and hyped-out just like Iphones. Even the image quality isn't that wonderful, as they advertise (b/c these are post-processed heavily).. If you don't have tone of free time, powerful PC and experience in advanced post-processing (as most youtubers advertising GoPros do, because they make a living out of those YT videos) to "make" them "pretty", you will get just a standard quality video, as with many other, much cheaper action-cameras. GoPro 7 is my first and is going to be my last GoPro for sure. Before GP I had a Lamax action cam - 3x cheaper, same image quality, very similar bugs.. I thought I would make a huge difference buying GoPro.. Nah.. similars bugs, just for 3x more $$$. The worst thing is GoPro releases new models but doesn't give a sh*t about fixing the previous ones first!

Yep, same here. untouchable screen and freezing. grrr. After the 1.52 update, I find that quick jabs to the screen have more success that a slower approach that I am used to wit the Hero 5, for example. Good work, keep it up!

Great update video man. Ive pretty much had the same exact experience as you. I am continuously blown away by the Quality of the footage that it captures. But its also the buggiest camera I’ve ever owned (I have owned previous GoPro‘s which had their own issues). I unintentionally started an insanely long thread on the GoPro support page because after purchasing it the first weekend it was available, and receiving it - it froze on me multiple times within the first 15 minutes and yeah, it freezes - locks up way too often and that’s unacceptable for a camera like this. Especially the 9th iteration of a company‘s main product. I did not know there was a new firmware update - i’ll be downloading that tonight. And just like you, Ive tried to be patient with gopro because I freakin love the company and everything they’re about. And even though it’s been this buggy - I still purchased the media mod, the max lens mod and some new accessories. But like I said to the moderators on their support page - we did not pay to be the beta testers. These bugs should’ve been fixed pre-launch. Hopefully the 10th generation will be the winner. Ha. To the point! Every year I hope to upgrade from my rock solid Hero 4 Black (2016!) to something better, but the newer cameras where always a disapointment. Why is that so hard to take a Hero 4 Black add a little bit of image stabilisation, add 2 mm of rubber arround to make it IP67 and program a smartphone app that does one thing reliable: Transfer video to local storage. I need no more, no less. Also newer models where always hard to quickly grab the microSD on the mount for exchange.

I feel that GoPro needs to grow up. The first GoPro was a proof of concept, showing that a lot of technology could be bundled in a small package. And improving upon that technology for the next few GoPros made sense. But why is GoPro sticking to, and improving, the outdated technology? First of all, a larger 1-inch sensor has been around for years. This sensor would give GoPro images significantly better image quality, especially in low light. A larger sensor would address exposure and saturation concerns. I would gladly pay the extra money to get a much, much better sensor. Secondly, when the camera is mounted on a stationary object (i.e. making a time lapse), it’s not always easy to get the distancing I want from my subject. A super wide angle lens is good for some scenarios, but a variable zoom lens would be infinitely more useful.

Losing footage is a no-no. I'm quite happy with the Osmo Action. It's realiable, has all the features I need and the image quality can easily compete with all the GoPros or Insta 360s out there.

I just saw a video Authentech did a couple of weeks ago comparing the GoPro and Osmo Action. He had a lot of the same takeaways. The good thing about the Osmo is cheap accessories. I saw the Polar Pro 3 ND filter set a while back for $20 and grabbed it. Worth every penny.

My experience with my Hero 9 Black is exactly what you stated in your review. The icing on the Hero 9 disappointment side was yesterday. I was at an amazing car show at the Ritz Hotel grounds in Orlando, FL. A great collection of super cars were on the grounds. Had my new Nu Bear extension/floating/extendible mount. Put the 9 on, fully extended the Nu Bear to get some over the crowd shots. Connected my phone to the 9 so I could see where the heck I was shooting. Lifted it up, had an awesome view, hit record and my phone screen went blank. WTF!!! VERY DISAPPOINTED IN GOPRO. I won't get into the freeze ups and lousy touch screen ( you got it all right in your video). AND I would not recommend this GoPro to anybody. GoPro needs to put a reset button on the camera so you don't have to dig out the battery every time the dam camera freezes.

2 weeks in, on firmware 1.52. Maybe lucky to have waited a bit. I was pre-warned about sluggishness of display response so have set my expectations accordingly. Otherwise no major problems so far. Battery life like I feel is usually the case is not great but its a powerful little camera. OH, and the size difference is indeed hugely noticeable. Not a terrible thing but definitely a chunky one here. I suspect the 7s and 8s will have a long life yet being smaller and lighter for various situations that just don't need the added power of the 9.
