Nice gun & caliber . Thanks for the video . I’d recommend you get aluminum pillars installed so you won’t have a shift in point of aim. It will keep the wood in your stock from crushing from the force of the action screws. It could have been done at the same time as the bedding job.

Yes, pillars were discussed with the Gunsmith. Thanks for your suggestion here.

As for your optic, 3-9x scopes were IT for many many years, most that didn't use variables had 4x, and there is no telling how many deer and elk have fallen to those Bushnell Banner and Tasco scopes. I would leave well enough alone on that. Sears always had great rebranded firearms, many by Winchester and their ammunition was made by Winchester as well. Their 180 gr round nose were tack drivers in my brother's model 670 30-06, with that long bearing surface, and cost a couple of dollars less per box than actual Winchester(that was when $2 was a lot of money, I could get a couple boxes of 22lr for that and have change😊). I hope the cracks were healed by the bedding process. That rifle should still be a fine shooter for many more years. I have a sporterized 1917 EDDYSTONE that shoots pretty good for being over 100 years old. I imagine it will still be a shooter in 100 more if it is kept clean and the round count doesn't get too high. I am hoping to give it to a great grandson in a few more years when he's old enough to hunt with it, he's only 2 at the moment.

Oz here, I have a very similar rifle, FN Mauser ,30-06 Shillen trigger , Pecar 4x scope , glass bedded. Always shot 150 grain Hornady spire points . Very tight shooter, never touched the scope adjustments for 30 years , until we had a long drought, (many years), then point of impact altered. Took it apart, as far as I could tell the dry time had altered the wood/metal contact , I fixed that up and all was well. I now use humidity control in my gun safe .

Good on you for having that rifle stock fixed. I always glass bed my rifles. Especially my model 70's, like your rifle here. Glass bedding does more than just supply a solid resting place and good foundation, it also protects your stock from splitting. The old rifle should have probably been glass bedded a long time ago. Very well worth the $120.00 you spent to have it done. Now you have a dependable rifle, that you don't have to worry about splitting open again. If said bedding job was done properly. Looks like it's shooting very well. Well done!!!

Lots of rifles bought at Sears and places like Western Auto back in the day. First rifle scope I ever bought was a Charles Daly I think I bought it at an Oshman's store. Don't see them anymore gone like Sears and Western Auto. A little caution about shooting older handloads I had some that wouldn't chamber I found out the bullets were seated a little long I'm not sure how that happened so I tried to push them in a little farther. It took a lot of effort to move them and I use a Redding Big Boss press they definitely had "welded" in the necks. They shot just fine but got me to thinking so I got most of my really old rounds out and pulled the bullets. It wasn't a large amount and some I had no labels as to when or what the loads were. I was gifted a lot of handloads from a deceased friend one time and pulled all of those they just weren't worth the risk many were loose and not labeled anyway. Great looking old rifle nice to pull them out and shoot them occasionally.

You caught me checking out my game camera cards with this video. Love my 2005 Tikka T3 Lite SS in 30-06 SPR. Looks like the last time I messed with any loads for it was about 2010 with Hornady 165 gr Interbonds and Varget. My deer load down here in South Texas is a Hornady 125 gr SST and VV N550 for about 3250 fps and about a 5/8", 3 shot group at 100 yds. Got my current largest buck with that load in 2020. Anyway, glad your rifle is back to shooting well. Good luck and stay safe!!! 😉😉😉

Adding a pin across the stock, behind the recoil lug, is a common repair for those older stocks, when they split. I have gunsmithing books dating back to the 20's and this is mentioned often. I believe Winchester put the pin in their factory Magnum caliber rifles..
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho80094 ай бұрын
Gunsmith thought a bedding compound would be just as good as a pin. We shall see in the upcoming load development. Thanks for watching.

Mornin Dave! I would have suggested Pillar and a glass bed of the action. Focus on epoxy into the cracks. The pillars will relieve much stresses and solidfy the mounting points. Glass bedding will lock the action i to the stock spreading our recoil over the entire surface area. Glad its shooting for ya again. ❤❤ BTW all is fine here. Utube struck me down for a week.

I learned something new from the gunsmith because I never even checked for bedding before. Fortunately the newer "Chassis style rifles" generally take care of that issue. KZbin is doing the next generation of firearms sportsmen a disservice by not allowing "how to fix" videos.

I love wood and blued steel. My first rifle (and I still have it) is a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06. I bought it in 1979. Similar to your Ted Williams / Winchester 70. Classic rifles in a classic caliber. Just can’t go wrong with with a walnut stock, blued steel in 30-06. Maybe some new rifles with composite stocks are more accurate but not as pleasing to the eye.

Hello, enjoyed this video on your rifle, I am subscribed and watch all your videos. The reason for this message is a little info you may be interested in. I have been developing a load for my 6arc strictly for coyote and have settled so far using the Hornady 80gr8 ELD VT. But after watching your tests on the Wilson 300 hammer, the Lehigh defense bullets interested me. After going to Wilson Defense website and making a phone call to them, I saw they offer only one 243 bullet which is what I need. It is a 85gr Controlled Chaos, and because this 6arc gas is sensitive to the Lands, I felt this may work. I will tell you, this bullet is definitely more consistent than the Hornady and groups much better. I have 22in, 1-8 twist, 30.5gr Lever Evelution 3015fps. This to me is a huge difference maker for the 6arc. You have been a huge help with all your tests, and is how I got directed to Wilson Defense and their bullets. I'm expecting great terminal results also with this bullet as well as I don't worry about pelts. I hope this info will help with anybody working with this caliber. Thanks again for you time you spend

Option 1 Do a good bedding job and get the stress back on the recoil lug. Keep the clearance around the screws and the bedding will spread the load of the recoil. Option 2 if you have the cash order a new McMillan stock and have the action bedded. Take and put the original up and keep it untouched. I suggest option 2

My grandfather has sadly passed away due to this exact model of 30.06, and after the investigation we ended up getting this gun back and it has a tremendously large crack on the left hind side of the stock. Do you know a way to fix the issue, or perhaps know someone that works on wood styled guns?

You can contact any full time gunsmith to address the stock issue. But no matter what a Winchester model 70 replacement stock is readily available.
