Part 6/6. All our horses are insured for "Public Liability" which means if they cause any injury or damage to another person or persons we are covered up to £2.5 million. You just never know. A Poem by Karen Lugg:
Farouk said
O thank God I made it home,
I’m exhausted never more to roam
Oh no said Apollo what have you done,
You were supposed to be out having fun.
I got lost said Farouk looking very sad
You didn’t lose Tara did you, that would be bad.
Not exactly, we got all the way round
and people said how well I covered the ground
Tell me more said Apollo not believing his ears
How did you get lost, well said Farouk nearly in tears.
We were by the van and I saw these horses trott past,
They were easy to catch, they weren’t very fast.
Tara was changing my bridle you see,
It was easy to get free.
Oh you didn’t run off, what happened next,
Said Apollo looking worried and vexed.
Out onto the road I ran for miles,
A bit like doing speed test trials.
But I got so frightened and lost you see
With all those vehicles coming at me.
My feet were red hot and I started to puff,
I knew that I had had enough.
I couldn’t think straight it was a nightmare,
But suddenly, like magic, Tara was there.
She calmed me down and took such care.
She told me off as we walked back
Said it would be a while before I can hack.
Well said Apollo as head of the herd
I must say what you did was really absurd.
It was a selfish, stupid thing to do,
especially as you don’t wear shoes.
I’m sorry said Farouk looking downcast.
But bloody hell wasn’t I fast.

M'am, holding your arm up high at 4:24, 4:37 and 4:45 is the worst thing you can do. He was walking towards you and you raised your arm and he turned away every single time. The other woman is the only reason why he didn't take off on you again. Lower your arms and show him your shoulder and he'll walk to you.

This could’ve been completely avoided had she seen his signs when she was beginning to take off the bridle. To not have a lead around his neck in such an open space was something a beginner would do.

This still gets my heart racing and brings tears to my eyes. I’ve seen the horrible results of car/horse accidents and they are gut-wrenching. Thank God, Farouk came through this largely unscathed. Interesting how he now relates to you! He was terribly scared and then saw YOU and he remembered the safety and kindness he has experienced with you. He sees you as his ‘rescuer’, the person who showed up when he was the most frightened. Maybe a lesson well learned for him. Let’s hope so! 😌😊🥰

Hi Tara im so glad Farouk is ok. One thing i was taught by my English mum and always do is put the halter around their necks and have them tied, or holding onto the lead rope before i take the bridle off, slip it over the nose straight after the bridle is off, it gives me more control and confidence.

When I had my Arab, I didn't dare take her out when it was windy. The wind amped her up into such a state that she was almost uncontrollable. When Farouk bolted from you, my heart jumped into my throat and I sat here murmuring, "oh no, no, no"! So relieved that things ended well for you, Tara. God bless those wonderful people that rallied to your aid.

Thank you for letting us know beforehand that he was ok, but once you got to him and were heading back I teared up so thankful all was good. I was also thankful for the wonderful lady that helped you calm him but I know when something like that happens we are in such a fearful, anxious state and nerves on overload, and you having her to walk back with and talking helped you to relax a little. He is certainly a lucky boy for being ok and for having you as his mom.

What a terrifying thing to happen. I can just imagine how you felt watching him go away from you. OH MY GOODNESS ! This made me relive an episode with my Arab. It was spring many years ago, I was out riding in the forest preserve ( you had to cross a two lane road from the stable to get into forest preserve). We were about 3 blocks from the road on the way back to the stable. She was trotting and slipped on a piece of hidden ice and she went down onto her left side. My left leg still in the stirrup slammed into the ground knee first with her on top of me. During the fall I lost the reins, she somehow got up and took off full speed for the stable. I couldn't get up off the ground. After about 20 minutes folks from the stable came searching for me and said my horse was ok, but was almost hit by cars as she flew out of the woods onto the road trying to get home ! I had fractured my patella and had knee surgery for meniscus tear. YOU MY DEAR REALLY LUCKED OUT ! ! Seeing all the traffic and speed of the cars it is amazing Farouk wasn't hit. So so glad all is ok. Take care.

Tara I can't begin to comprehend how traumatized you must have felt about that situation. It's the not knowing what's happened to him, to others and your total inability to control the situation. How amazingly kind those people were to help and support you. The adrenaline keeps you going whilst all trauma happens but it's after you'd got him in the horse box that I bet you felt like bursting into tears, I know I would. He definitely was a very lucky boy and thank for being such a generous horsewoman to share this experience with others as a educational tool. Good to hear you are both recovered and doing well.💐⭐🧡

Farouk’s great escape happened 2 years ago just came up on my news feed. How frightening. The big difference in Farouk now compared to back then he certainly has matured a lot & in the video as you & the lovely lady who helped you to catch Farouk also the other people who step in to help you also. I can imagine what your heart rate was during those moments, and after the relief of finding him, getting him bridled, and the stress of the speeding cars, you both needed that cool down walk didn't you? Love to the people that stepped up to help. It still amazes me how many people probably drove by him without a thought of stopping to help even with the knowing he was loose. Tara you mentioned him hanging closer to you afterwards, does that kind of experience typically teach them or maybe mature them? Trust, you already had but you reached an even higher level with you coming to his rescue. So thankful and happy everything turned out so well. How was your recovery? Lol

The only thing worse than when they bolt off like that is when they bolt off like that and the saddle is loose and slips and goes under their belly. Then they go bucking through the venue tossing bits of saddle or tack here and there. It is always terrifying and horrifying and nothing is worse than hearing "loose horse!" 😲 He really did seem to be in a bit of panic poor chap. So glad he didn't bolt into a lorry or something.

Some of those drivers don’t think when going past horses at a neck braking speed especially that red car & how dangerous it can be for the rider or someone leading a horse/pony along the road. I am always surprised that morel competition venues don’t keep the gate to the lorry park shut then this type of thing would not happen. Yes, it is irritating to have to open and shut a gate, especially if you are on your own, but better that than a horse or person suffering serious injury or death.

I agree with you. But it is also the responsibility of the Horse owner to keep their horse safe. Removing a bridle with out first having secure restraint , especially in an area with many distractions is in my opinion a little foolish.. A horse is a flight animal always be prepared. Voice commands do not always work. Keep safe Tara.

Oh dear, it’s a good thing I did not watch this last night since my daughter is visiting from Indiana. I burst into tears knowing that sinking feeling from the morning I went to do my chores and all 3 were gone. They went across a busy road. Fortunately, a police officer came along where I was walking and she had spotted them. I started running in that direction until the officer said she could drive me there faster! When I approached them praying my heart out Whiskey took off galloping & leading the way home. The officer blocked traffic while they crossed the busy road. We live on a dead end country road with hardly any traffic. All 3 went ran into the paddock then their stalls & hung their heads. Like, why would we leave our home where we are treated better than many children? I saw Divine intervention operating on behalf of Farouk. So grateful your trauma ended well. 💗🤠

I have to agree with you about order of priority, I’m sure Tara is well able to provide Farouk with another bridle , it’s just a really good job that he didn’t cause an accident, my cousin was involved in an accident with a horse bolting and jumping clear of the hedge around it’s field, it landed on top of her car and seriously injured her mother ( my Aunty) who had to be rushed to hospital with a suspected broken neck, the horse had to be destroyed at the scene, I’m not telling this to be judgemental but no matter how much we think we know our animals, that is precisely what they are and as such unpredictable in behaviour having said that I really felt for Tara, she had to have been in shock and I’m so pleased that neither her or Farouk have suffered either physically or mentally. ❤️

@@CHill-lg6mj but he’s not all that could have been hurt, I-know as Tara mentioned, she has done the same thing time and time again where she has taken the bridle off and left the reins around his neck to put his head collar on and yes hindsight is a wonderful thing but and it’s a big but, Farouk as we are reminded on many occasions, is a skittish pure bred Arab, who has his days when he can shy at the slightest thing, so getting complacent isn’t a thing you can afford to be come, animals, all animals are unpredictable, I was brought up on a farm, we had many different breeds and with something the size of a horse it goes without saying, one can never be to careful. I’m not criticising Tara, it all happened in a split second and there was absolutely nothing she could do but to let him go, she herself could have been seriously injured, not just others, I’m sure it’s a lesson learned that hopefully will never happen again for all their sakes, but I still say, the bridle can and will be easily replaced.

Tara I just want to say Farouk is so beautiful. I have only ridden an Arabian horse once (I’m assuming Farouk is an Arabian). But their shift into a gallop is amazing. I could just feel the hind quarters bunching and thrusting!!! So glad this turned out alright!

this is the reason i never ever ever take a bridle of outside! always in the trailer or truck or stable indoors! When i went out riding i would put the bridle on in the trailer , and when i was done , put them in the trailer and chance the bridle into halter! never in my whole life will i ever do this ! i had a mare that spooked like this all the time on the parking . i would always take the lunge , bridle her and take her down the trailer . now i have a stallion and he gets always a bridle on when he goes outside with a lungeline on it! i have had several things like this happened when i was younger , but i am older now and way more carefull! thank god he is ok , everybody else is ok and you two can continue you're story !!

My heart sank when he took off. I had that feeling in the pit of my stomach that happens when shock, fear and momentary helplessness punch me in the gut. Just watching the way people drive around there, Farouk is extremely lucky to have avoided a serious incident. I can only imagine the anxiety you felt Tara. I'm so pleased that he didn't hurt himself badly and he's all better now. He must have been very frightened and it's interesting that he is closer with you now. I'm so glad that you just reassured him once you caught him and walked him calmly back (although I bet your heart was racing) because that's the kind, gentle way that you are with all of your animals. Unfortunately, I've seen some horse owners in similar situations, who have been so angry that they have punished the horse once they caught up with it. He knows he can rely on you. So glad you got him back safe and sound, my heart was pounding for you Tara 💗 xx My husband once fell off his 17.2 horse in 35,000 acres of forestry commission woodland which was surrounded by busy roads, we lost Badger for 3 hours, the rangers and all our friends came from miles to help us, we feared the worst .... eventually we saw him being lead by a very tiny lady walking her dog, she wasnt "horsey" at all, but apparently Badger had walked up to her as if to say, "can you take me back to my dad please, I'm lost" The relief and gratitude we felt was overwhelming, I burst into tears xx Lesson learnt, after that we only rode in pairs in the woods xx

I am happy that he did not get hurt and that his hooves have grown back. I would have been in panic mode and would have jumped out of the car too lol 😊 I remember many years ago, my ex husband and I were looking into buying a home. There was one home that had stables with a couple of fields for the horses. We got into the car after visiting the house and were driving down the road and noticed one their horses jumped the fence and was on the side of the road. I told my ex husband to stop the car and I got out and started to speak to the horse asking him if the grass was better on this side. I approached him slowly and grabbed his head collar and started to walk him towards the house. All this time, my ex was telling me that I was crazy to approach a strange horse lol - We arrived at the house and my ex knocked on the door and the look on the woman’s face was funny. She said that he has gotten out of the field on a few occasions and asked if I had horses as he was completely comfortable with me walking him.

I have done this as well. A neighbors horse was grazing outside his paddock (just an electric fence to keep him in. Didn’t work as he likely was rolling and found himself outside the fence.)near the road as I was walking by. I got him by the head collar as led him away from the road and closer to the house. I left him to graze and went to the house to let them know he was out. They looked at me, said “okay” but never bothered to go out to put him where he belonged. Irresponsible! Needless to say, they no longer have him.

Try tying his halter (leadrope) to the trailer and put the halter on his neck before taking off the bridle. Thats how i was taught 🥰 he saw the chance and took it💀

OHH, one of mine WORST nightmare (regarding horses)- GOOD you caught him(and intact). GREAT PEOPLE WHO HELPED YOU. I CAN NOT EVEN STRESS HOW GOOD THEY WERE. if I may suggest - next time just put his head collar OVER the bridal and haul him like that. You can always take the rains off, I'm sure it will be safe. My mare did the same thing ONCE. I’m sure you’re right. It was as frightening for her as me. Main road. Fast cars. Barefoot. Though fully bridled. Wow. We and our horses were indeed quite lucky. Thank Goodness. And thanks to helpful people too. I’ll never forget them.

I think you were also very lucky that no people were injured from a car accident from him running through the streets. When we go to any event, the gates are always closed. Even when there is open field riding like where you were, the floating area is enclosed & on the off chance it's not (only ever once), always put the halter on before you take off the bridle. Safer for you & safer for the horse. So glad this worked out with no injuries to anyone involved 😮‍💨🙂

It occurred to me that he might get really sore several hours on even though he seemed fine immediately afterwards. I would make arrangements with a vet if you haven’t, I’m guessing you probably drive right to one though!! I’m still holding my breath a little hehe I live by a busy road and my horses spooking down it is my worst nightmare!

“No matter how careful you are, things just happen.” This is spot on Tara…and it’s such a relief that beautiful Farouk was okay after his wacky and frightening adventure! Thanks goodness for kind folk lending a hand. I worked with horses for decades and it’s very common to leave reins around a horses’s neck, slip off the bridle and pop on the halter…and in my experience all those ‘keyboard warriors’ slamming Tara for doing otherwise aren’t being realistic. Ideally the gate to that field should have been closed over and/or manned at all times…especially when the road was such a busy one. A horse unexpectedly dashing out onto that busy road could just as easily have happened if someone had fallen off. Event organisers could perhaps review their safety policies? Again though, it’s true that sometimes things just happen. All’s well that ends well.

@@angiebess7371 no it wasn’t her fault now I don’t know if you’ve ever owned or worked with horses but I’ve worked with horses donkeys and ponies geldings mares and stallions, sometimes horses are just horses they get excited or spooked, they run off or buck it’s what happenes but you learn from it and move on there is no way tara could’ve dug her heels into the ground and held him back or “bribe him with a carrot” that is a big and especially fast horse,the event should’ve had a closed gate or people standing by the gate in high-vis the SAFTEY of the riders and horses should be THIER main priority as the riders can only focus on them and their horse not everyone else’s, you are a Karen and a keyboard warrior when you’ve had a horse bolt then talk but until then

I don't know anything about horses except for the fact that they are strong powerful animals, made for running. If the gate had been closed, at the speed he was going, could Farouk not crashed in to it and hurt himself, or just jumped over it? I remember the terror I felt when my late husband's dog backed out of her collar onto a busy road, and how grateful I was that people who (literally) race down that road stopped for us until I could get to her. She was scared, she wasn't used to cars, and mad as all get out that I picked her up and literally carried her 1/3 mile home. Lucky for me, she was only 14lbs, but I was too scared to put her down now that we both knew she could back out of her collar!

@@leeannjohnson1808 horses don’t usually crash into things or jump over gates/fences, so i think he would’ve just stopped, and the dog thing… one time my greyhound got out and at least 4 people came and helped! she was on the road and 4 people just surrounded her until we got there, it was amazing because she was new and definitely wanted to explore so she probably would’ve been gone if it wasn’t for them.

Goodness me Tara, my heart was in my mouth the whole time. This, unfortunately, is a regular occurrence for my cob 😢. We don’t go on pleasure rides etc but can happen coming out of the stable, putting tack on, taking tack off, coming out of the field (onto a road). He’s 20 years old and has gotten into a terrible habit. I’ve has him 4 years now and it’s becoming less regular. He did it last weekend for the first time in 12 months. Right onto the road 😬 it’s awful isn’t it! Very glad all was well in the end x

Karen your poem, loved it!!!! You're right, Tara. He was being a bit naughty, but once he was off, the bridle spooked him. He is SOOOOO lucky. I get choked up at the part when you find him. He ran so far and just thinking about what could have happened 😓 Bless all the people who helped you ❤️ I would have been beside myself not knowing which direction he'd gone or if he ducked into somewhere. After watching the event, which was a nice pace, it's amazing the speed and stamina he had to run off so far down the road! Holy Carp!! Farouk!! He is so so so lucky to not have fallen, slipped, tripped or been hit by a car, someone was looking out for him and a lost bridle is a heck of a small price to pay to what could have happened. I'd almost be tempted to either wear the a rope halter under the bridle or not take the bridle off until he was in the van. I dont know how you stayed so calm, I would have been a blethering eejit. Lucky Farouk for sure. I'm sat at my computer and I feel shocked. Well done to the lady who followed him in the van and the guy who took you out to follow him as well. Farouk did look very relieved to be caught. For sure the Prophet for looking out for his horse.
