You know, I heard that black Butler season 2 was complete filler, but I had no idea that was also the case for the second half of season 1! Suddenly, a lot of the events from the anime, make way more sense now! Like how Queen Victoria miraculously turned up alive and season 3 looking completely different from how she did in season 1!

The fanservice-y moments between Ciel and Sebastian made me uncomfortable as a child and ultimately influenced my decision to not continue watching. I would’ve like it otherwise but it felt weird even when I was basically the same age as Ciel. I probably wouldn’t watch it now as an adult because of it. Jobless Reincarnation turned me off within the first episode for similar reasons. I just don’t see the point in drawing young boy characters like that?

It's insane to me how a lot of anime feels like you can only watch/fully enjoyit as a kid (even though it's for a ""mature"" audience). watching it as an adult is near Impossible. You can't stop thinking about the implications of it all. An entire team animated it, the grown adult author who saw nothing wrong with it. The "market" they are pandering to etc etc And this is why I never get arguments of "[insert old but popular anime here] is problematic, it wouldn't happen today/people who liked it back then are weird". As if the most popular anime of last year didn't have a Doctor being inappropriate with his 12 year old patient. There's a "culture" to anime that won't just go away over night.

I've seen a lot of videos recommended on KZbin over the past week about Black Butler and its problems that I avoided watching... since they all popped up around the same time seemingly out of nowhere I thought maybe everyone was just jumping on a trend train to bash on it for fun since everyone else was. Yours was the first video I decided to watch since I've watched your previous videos and I appreciate your commentary and analysis on other series already. Thank you for creating a space that feels safe and reliable for talking about anime like this, even with nuance and space for acknowledging changes in taste, personal or industry-wide, over time. Like yes, I loved this series as a teen but I've known for years that it had weird and problematic things too and I can still look back on it with nostalgia for the good times I had with other people at that time without holding it up as some untouchable masterpiece. Personally, the different anime endings always felt pretty throwaway since we knew they weren't canon and just kept reading the manga instead haha, we treated the anime fillers like fun multiverses and what ifs. I did, however, fall off the bandwagon after the public school arc in the manga due to changes in personal taste of what content I felt like reading. No hate to the OG material, no hate to the people who still love it, it's still an escapist fun time as long as everyone acts responsibly about it.

Having gotten curious and skimmed a few of the unadapted chapters, I would warn that rape and pedophilia does get tackled in-text in a prominent way. Spoilers Below Ciel's full story of when he was sacrificed is revealed, and the sexual abuse of him and another character is depicted through symbolic imagery and a few non-explicit but unambiguous panels that make it clear what's happening. It's not played for fanservice at all, and is honestly effective in coveying how horrifying the situation is. However I admit it's difficult to then think back in the moments where the insituations of Ciel being sexualised is played off with a wink and a nudge. Even around the chapter, there's some uncomfortable posing and framing of characters who are minors. The assault itself is depicted with severity, but it throws more ambiguity as to where these other scenes are coming from and what they're meant to evoke. Honestly it's a difficult topic and I don't know how I feel about these things, and I suspect if it's adapted there's going to be a lot of debate around it.

The whole "Black Butler was going to be a yaoi" thing that has been and is still going around has been proven to be misinformation many times, Yana has talked about her original plans on the series and why she made it in the first place. She talked about how she was using it to move away from making yaoi (or anything involving romance), and that it was actually supposed to be a short story on Sebastian.

I became a huge fan of black butler in 2020 when i decided to pick up the manga (i actually got done a huge Ciel Tatt last year) but the first two season are such a stain for the franchise (since the whole book "trilogy" is pretty good) not only because of the filler but the approach as well so is totally understandable to give up on it if that was someones first introduction to the story but i would encourage people that like the premise to give the manga a shot it would not disappoint It's also fun to see so many people talk about it now because of all the noise the new season of the anime is getting from both fans and people curious about it
@O_Ciel_Phant0mhive10 ай бұрын
the manga is not as bad as the anime. Trust lol I admit that Yana has questionable choices ( as most manga creators do) but the toxic part of the fandom that ships sebaciel is the real problem as well as the people who believe it. There are many older fans like me that grew up with the story and actually like it FOR WHAT IT IS, rather than what people think it is. The plot is really good, especially now. 10/10 recommend.

I definitely agree. I always stayed away from ANY sebciel when I was watching because I thought it was gross and also just not important to the story. The story itself imo is really interesting and I like the surveys into the fucked up nature of humanity. That being said, the parts that suck are really hard to miss so I don’t blame anyone for not liking it. Also I’ve always thought the manga was legues better.

Your description of BB as a visual novel with multiple bad endings and the true ending only to be found in the manga LMAO so true. They really made it so confusing for new viewers. 2 seasons that are largely non-canon -> One canon season -> An OVA that is particularly important for one character’s story arc -> A movie -> Another season. And sprinkle in some non canon OVAs in between and you have the joy that is Black Butler. I started watching BB when I was in elementary, so, very young. I thought the fanservice moments were just funny gags, but growing up I’ve definitely become more uncomfortable with those parts and I don’t blame people for being wary of the anime because of those very questionable scenes. For an anime featuring a boy with sexual trauma, Toboso sure loves to place Ciel in precarious situations with older men 😭
@TheGamer20018 ай бұрын
Even though I am aware of the show's shortcomings (I especially don't like yana's portrayal of women and Grell) and wish it would go in a different direction (it could be an intense psychological thriller and a true horror), I can't help but love it even in my late 20s. I love the setting and the vibe the show gives me, as well as a quite well-crafted eye- and ear-candy (Sebastian). Weirdly enough, out of all the animes that I have watched, BB was the show that inspired me to take on creative writing once again. I see that a lot of people are embarassed by liking this show in the past and for liking it now, and I say that it is ok to like problematic shows as long as you are not overstepping the boundaries and are aware of the problems.

sebastian and ciel's sexualised dynamic makes the show more disturbing and interesting IMO. Like it is a horror manga. BB is clearly a shota aligned show. Yet Ciel is a completely unrealistic depiction of a child. Ciel is very young and dependent on this adult he has a predatory relationship with- and yes the predation goes both ways: Sebastian wants to eat him but Ciel is also the one in complete control of Sebastian. that can mean multiple things when analysed. I think Ciel being a child is more of metaphor- his smallness makes him more vulnerable and therefore his relationship with Sebastian becomes more intense in the context of the story. the predatory element is the story. It's natural to be uncomfy with shota but I'm kind of bummed out that people are so afraid of actually analysing it. In general I find the idea that reading shota can proof someone is an irl creep very silly and kind of intellectually dishonest. watching actual R18 shota anime was literally a copy-pasta joke in the 00's yet it didn't cause any spike in crime statictics.

I'm so glad you mentioned some of Toboso's weird choices because as someone who's been hyperfixated on Black Butler and involved with the fandom for years now, I've only ever seen people idolize her and it's always irked me because even still in the newer chapters of the manga some of her writing is just extremely off-putting to me. Specifically how she handles Nina Hopkins and Ran-mao (who are admittedly some of my all-time fav characters, but more so for what they COULD BE). Like Ran is literally just a walking stereotype and mostly there to be sexualized and to me, a lesbian, it's pretty obvious that Nina is heavily implied to be lesbian and Toboso often uses her character for uncomfortable jokes, pretty much enforcing the predatory lesbian stereotype, even if it's not intentional.
@hitosan37716 ай бұрын
I feel like you overlooked one other issue regarding Nina...she's literally a shotacon and because of that, honestly, I wouldn't interpret her to be lesbian, just a weirdo, but maybe that's just me (another lesbian who doesn't want her to be a representation of who I am lol).

Since I have watched (and enjoyed to an extent) all the existing seasons and ova, I'll probably give the new season a chance, esp. if they tone down (ideally eradicate) the sexualisation of Ciel and his relationship with Sebastian. Edit: my experience watching Black butler was being baffled/distressed by the fan service + implied "romantic" relationship btw Ciel, Alois and their respective butlers, while thoroughly enjoying the artstyle, the time period and the plot. I also remember being angered by the 2nd season bec. I HATE, when victims of csa are villyfied as "(hyper)sexually promiscuous" and "mentally unstable" for shock value. It's so disrespectful to real victims, I wish creators would stop introducing these situations, if they dont plan on tackling them meaningfully. In conclusion, I'm side-eying the whole production team of season 1 and 2. 🤨🧐

I mean o!Ciel is a victim of sexual assault too but his trauma to the situation makes him act out in different ways. He doesn't like being touched by people especially people he doesn't know. He hates being perceived as a child, especially with his line of work where he has to be taken seriously. He just has a lot of trauma and it's relatable because sometimes some of SA victims do act out sexually and are mentally unwell from everything. No need to shame him he was just wanted to be needed and was finding comfort in the wrong people.

I love the video and I appreciate the fact that you gave us warning of Black Bulter will consist of/what you will be discussing within the video. On the other note, if possible could you do a manga review on Kyou Koi Wo Hajimemasu or for the translation Today, Our Love Story Begins, it has the bully to lovers trope(in my opinion) but it may be the rivals to lovers or enemies to lovers trope and the story focuses on Tsubaki Hibino, a girl who is shy, quiet, unpopular yet is very smart(Second) in her class and has a passion for hairstyling while her bully(in my opinion), classmate, rival(in terms of academics since Ryouta is the first in their class), promiscuous and love interest Ryouta Tsubaki has a passion for space and wants to be a NASA astronaut. I didn't really like this story, it was a 3 out of 10 but your opinion on the manga would be great and it has two ova episodes only in sub and a live action movie. The manga has 100 chapters. What I enjoyed most was the murder mystery and the dark fantasy elements paired with the Victorian era setting, and it was the side characters like Grell, Meylin and the Undertaker that kept me invested for the long run. Also, the OPs and EDs?? Absolute bangers. They are iconic even to this day. But yeah, any love I had for the series died after high school and this video reminded me of the reasons why it did. I still appreciate some elements of its setting and story-telling, but I'll pass on ever returning to it.

I'm giving a bit more insight and input from the Twisted Wonderland side of things, since this video glossed over that: 1. Yana's not just a simple artist on the series. She's also the head writer, meaning she's calling all of the shots and is in charge of the over all story. 2. There are a few controversies about her within the fandom. The most notable one on the top of my head is when people accused the Diasomnia uniforms of being based on Yahtzee ones (not saying the actual word so this comment isn't flagged by KZbin) thanks to a mistranslated interview. While that was bullshit, as someone with a design background, I still think there are too many similarities for my liking, even if they aren't completely intentional. There was also one last year about one of Cater's outfits due to ties with a questionable period of Japanese history or something. But since I'm not East Asian or SEA, I'm not gonna comment on that. There are some problematic elements of the game like how often BIPOC characters are whitewashed in Groovies to certain events like the Sunset Savannah one. 3. Kalim (the guy you showed) is not the most popular character in Japan or the West. In Japan, it's Jade and Floyd (affectionately known as "the Tweels" by the western fandom). In the West, it's Malleus Draconia, who gives off a lot of YA fae lord love interest vibes. The former two are based on Ursula's eels while Malleus is based on Maleficent. (Fun Fact: Maleficent is also his grandma. xD) My thoughts on her as a whole? To be honest, I think she's a terrible writer, but an amazing artist. While there is a lot of bs and misunderstandings surrounding her, her works fall flat when it comes to plot, worldbuilding and basic writing principles like foreshadowing and Chekhov's Gun, especially in regards to that game. They have questionable elements. She seems to prioritize "surprising" plot twists that make no sense or being edgy over telling a good story that makes sense. Her strengths definitely lie in coming up with ideas...even if she's awful at the execution, and character. Her designs are on point. As a person, she has her rather questionable elements like her dabbling in s-con and how the manga treats Ciel, who is a child throughout its run. In other words, amazing artist, mediocre writer and a questionable person.

I think your choice to not pass judgement or really give harsher criticism on black butler and it’s author for the depictions of s-con and objectification of kids is weak. My mom got me into a lot of anime, and I didn’t understand why she disliked black butler so much until I read the manga when I was around ten. the framing of the story from the start clearly makes the relationship between ciel and the butler really uncomfortable, forcing ciel to crossdress in like, the first book?? the author of ruroni kenshin was literally caught with cp, and did similar shit, marrying a 14 year old girl to the 28 year old protagonist at the end of the series. I used to think that was OK until I grew up. Given that so many other middle schoolers and young people back in the 2010s had black butler as their first exposure to this shit, I remember seeing kids my age uncritically enjoy it. it worries me that this kind of material being familiar to so many preteens could be used to groom them. I’d be critical of adult fans for celebrating or centering their identity around a work which, from the start, has always been creepy towards minors. Especially because the ‘creepy adult who behaves inappropriately towards a child’ being ‘hot’ is supposed to be a major draw for the series. I don’t think it’s wrong to consume it and nobody should send hate or threats to people, but your almost lack of a conclusion on the subject that just comes across as wishy-washy. I’m disappointed.

oh sweet fuck I made this comment a few minutes before finishing the video, you’re a made in abyss fan. YIKES. im interested to see your criticisms of it but I’m already disappointed in how lukewarm this video is of the serious issues with black butler. i liked your video on black women in anime and was going to check out your collection, but your refusal to take any stance after saying “oh, yeah, the anime does treat ciel in really creepy ways” is concerning. I remember people who read black butler talking about ciel in a creepy as hell way and I doubt that’s really changed! The whole anime is founded on those two’s dynamics. While I also think people have the right to view and discuss things, I just don’t think your takes are that critical or interesting as the ones I enjoyed in your other video. If you’re going to condone l-con and s-con, you need to work through your conflicting feelings of nostalgia and realize how these works can be used to hurt real people.
