That 2600 version is unreal. I've been playing it for 40 years and it's still intriguing. The entire game feels like it's a glitch from another planet, in a different dimension, and it's going to catch on fire at any minute. It rules!

just like you, i played Lego Batman on the 360 with my boys... they are teenagers now... but i remembered this was one of the best games for kids at the time due to the level of fun, simple challenge and the fact they feature our favourite superheroes. when Lego Batman 2 came out, my boys were already old and good enough they could play on their own... some of the best memories of being a gaming parent is when your kids can start playing games and going finishing them without Daddy's help...

The Taito arcade cabinet took more quarters than I care to say back in the late 80's. I still think that is my favorite Superman game. Damn that Lex Luger, trying to do in Superman at every turn! You know, the craziest thing I remember about Superman 64 is that it was very highly anticipated, and was delayed. I remember the signs they up on the game case at Walmart apologizing for the game not being available. Also, when my son was around 10 he was strangely mesmerized by Superman Returns on the 360. He played that game every single day, and I think it was one of the first ones he ever beat.

I'm with your statement near the end, it's been basically impossible for developers to make a good Superman game because he's so overpowered. I can't say I've liked really any of the Superman games that I've played, which are mostly the ones from the Atari 2600 up through the N64 era. The Taito arcade game seemed decent when it was new, but it was so incredibly repetitive that it lost its luster pretty quickly. I haven't played all of them, including any of the open world style ones that came out after PS2 generation and beyond so who knows, maybe they'd change my opinion... but I'm not a big open world guy either so... :)
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries
@PatmanQC-Arcade-Documentaries 4 жыл бұрын
Some of the open world games are not too bad so if you are a fan of Superman you might want to check them out. Perhaps if the new Superman movie ever gets made that may be rocksteady will rethink their position on their canceled game.

Wait a minute, superman did NOT have a mullet in the death and return of superman game, he actually had his usual short hair. He only had a mullet in justice league: task force. If you compare how superman looks in both games, you can clearly see the difference in superman's hair style because both games actually use the same character model.

Great commentary. You always dig up some stuff I've never heard of before. I had no clue about that 2009 arcade game, and anything before the Taito Arcade game that I loved playing at the pizza place I grew up near. I've had an idea for a Superman game for a while, but it might be considered gimmicky like you mentioned in the video. Due to some circumstance (Red Sun poisoning, being lured off-world, weakened by Kryptonite, etc), Superman is de-powered at the start of the game, and you gradually perform tasks and complete quests where you slowly get more of his powerset until by the end of the game, you're the invulnerable, powerhouse Superman everyone knows. I think that Superman Returns had the right idea by making Metropolis the "health meter" instead of Superman. He needs innovative ideas like that to make the experience feel genuine because he's so powerful. But creators should look at this as a challenge to come up with new ideas, not a roadblock.

The thing that makes the arcade strange is that odd choice of having other superhero looking characters as the thugs, rather than generic criminals or aliens, or anything from the comics. I get the feeling they're supposed to be parodies of other superheroes. One's obviously a spider, so I guess Spider-Man. It's an odd game all around.

Kryptonite weapons might be gimmicky but I don't think many Superman fans will care if the game is fun. While I've played pretty much everything, you listed and owned most of the ones for systems I've owned (Atari 2600, NES, SNES, Gabe Boy, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, Switch, PSP, Vita, PS2, PS3, and PS4) my favorite is Justice League Heroes.
