The release of Space Jam: A New Legacy is here, the sequel to the beloved (if not exactly great) original film, with LeBron James taking over for Michael Jordan. In this video, I go over why I think this film feels even more cynical than the first and talk about why I feel the movie...kind of hates itself.

The saddest thing about this movie is the fact that some of the animators for it were left uncredited in the credits. It's a shame because the 2D segments may have not been as good as they were before, but the Wonder Woman comic style was actually the best part of the 2D animation.

The 2d segments are actually better-animated than the original space jam, look at them back-to-back. The shading is less intense in space jam 2, but the characters are more on-model and fluid. All the more reason they should have credited them

i absolutely despise the idea of "it's made for kids". it's a sequel to a movie made 25 years ago. there are tons of references to even older stuff that kids wouldn't even recognize. it's funny no one ever says "it's made for kids" when it comes to well received movies.

That's because it's an excuse. You don't need to make excuses for good films. Sometimes movies or animation are so bad they boomerang around to being entertaining, but the impression I get is you can enjoy Space Jam 2 only if you like reference humor.

There's a reason why many of the Disney, Pixar, and DreamWorks films, as well as shows like ATLA, Gravity falls, Adventure time, etc, are beloved by many. Because they know to challenge their audience, and present great stories that people regardless of age, would remember for a long time.
@thewolfofwallstreet627
@thewolfofwallstreet627 2 жыл бұрын
People who make that excuse are either morons or they don't watch a lot of films. If anything over half of the Pixar films are made for kids yet they're arguably some of the best films ever made like the toy story movies, Incredibles, ratatouille, and etc. Heck, beauty and the beast was made for kids yet that animated film was so good that it was nominated for an Oscar. Heck, there's even kid films like how to train your dragon, ponyo, lion king, and etc that are still hailed as classics to this day so I don't want to hear anyone say kids movies can't be good. Space jam 2 just outright sucks. Granted space jam 1 wasn't a great movie but it was at least coherent. This new movie just feels like trash

The problem I had with Space Jam 2 was that it felt more like an WB advertisement. It screamed: "Look at how many properties we own." It also focused too much on LeBron rather than the toons themselves, which made for bland watching. Space Jam 1 had it's issues but it at least focused more on the toons than MJ, as it had stakes for which threatened the toons with eternal imprisonment on an amusement park. Where as in Space Jam 2 the toons were only told they were going to be deleted just before the game, which felt like a copout.

@i .candy She's not superficial in the first movie due to any sexualization. The sexy part was fine (and on a side note, Jessica Rabbit was great). Anyway, Lola is superficial in the original movie because her personality is practically non-existent. The crazy spaz/stalker version from the show was super duper over the top, to the point where it was funny. Yes, stuff like that happens in real life, but those people get slapped with restraining orders or tossed in prison. Part of the fun of Lola in the show is that she's just allowed to walk freely and dive further into insanity, and yet she doesn't actually hurt anyone. It's played for gags, so *let it* be a gag. People get hit with pianos in real life too, but we still have those in looney toons. I think you hit the nail on the head without even knowing it. The problem with labeling things as "problematic" or "toxic" is that eventually writers make the characters so bland that they won't offend anyone, but they won't appeal to anyone either. So we get a new version, and it's Lola Boring-Bunny.
@jacksquatt6082
@jacksquatt6082 2 жыл бұрын
@i .candy If her strongest character trait is "I won't be pushed around," then she really doesn't have a personality. She's just being used as a stand-in for a female empowerment message. What they could have done is portray her as a genuinely good character first, and *also* have her be an empowered female on top of that. And I never excused Lola for being a manipulative idiot. I acknowledged it and reveled in it. It was hilarious and interesting. Plus, that version refused to be pushed around too. She wouldn't let Bugs push her out of his life. LOL!

_Space Jam 2,_ in a nutshell, is just Warner Bros. flexing at all their IPs and making "funny" crossovers with Looney Tunes characters. It is pretty much what Disney did years earlier with _Ralph Breaks the Internet_ showing the Disney part of the internet with all their Marvel and Star Wars stuff. The first movie is far from perfect, but at least plot doesn't rely on silly references and has more or less of a decent narrative, with a focus on the Looney Tunes rather than just using them as goofy plot devices to drive the story forward. It's the Looney Tunes who are the ones who seek Michael Jordan's help against Mr. Swackhammer from turning them into atractions for his theme park, and not the other way. On the other side, Michael Jordan is seen struggling to come back to basketball after playing baseball, so his role in the story has some sort of emotional appeal, as this is his chance to finally come back to his roots. Also, it infuriates me to the core when people say "Hey, it is just a kids' movie. Who cares?". Kids aren't (that) stupid, and thinking that movies should be dumbed down to be "easily digested" by kids is the problem. There are so many countless examples of kids' movies and shows that still resonates with children and adults with solid storytelling. Just because a movie is targeted to kids it doesn't mean it should be dumbed down.

Perspective from a non local, representing foreign audience. I'm from Costa Rica, I'm 30 years old now (have not gotten used to it yet because it's fresh haha) i grew up watching Warner Brothers shorts and the Looney Tunes. I knew all characters that showed up on screen on Space Jam 1, and Michael Jordan was widely known for being a Basketball star, we (most latinos) had not seen a single basketball game on TV at that time, so we were ignorant of how it looked, STILL, it's freaking Michael Jordan, a guy as talented and famous as Michael Jackson and Tiger Woods, i didn't know how to play golf but i knew Tiger Woods, you get the idea. The plot of the first movie made sense to me, and even though i didn't know most actors (active and retired BB players) on screen, i knew they were great basketball players, also, they had a lot of character and personality, Mugsy Bogues being the odd short guy, Patrick Ewing being tall af and his iconic haircut, Shawn Bradley being the personification of the Basketball Stereotype of a freakishly tall human, etc. The movie used good comedy (imo) to give the players some fair time on screen, to the point that people recognized them in later years when we had access to the internet. Keep in mind we had no way to watch the NBA, and nobody cared about Basketball. The story that the Looney Tunes followed was easy to understand and didn't require much previous knowledge. I went to watch Space Jam 2 with one sister and my mom (took them both to a movie theater for their 1st time ever) and i noticed, there was sooooooooo much previous knowledge needed to understand that movie, some things made sense or were kinda fun if you knew a lot of the context, i had been watching NBA related content for the past 3 years so i knew the players, but there was NOBODY famous enough for other people to relate them with the movie characters, and the players didn't get enough exposure to make their animated characters be linked to anything. (Also latinos don't know LeBron as well as we knew Michael Jordan back then, even with the advantage of internet) The movie is full of puns and nods to things mostly Americans would understand, i am very well informed so i knew them, but i doubt that more than 3 other people in the whole room got as much as i did. The humor wasn't there either, it's like the Looney Tunes suffered the cancelling of their personality in the same way LeBron was being too intense with his son at the beginning of the movie, so we didn't get to see cool scenes like the Men in Black parody of Sam and Elmer, Taz being as wild as he is, we barely saw Speedy Gonzalez do his thing for 1 irrelevant shot.. Etc Anyways, the sauce of the movie should have been the Looney Tunes, not Lebron, in fact, the center of the movie was Don Cheadle, the only highlight of it. In Space Jam 1 the movie circles around the Looney Tunes escense, and MJ is the guest star that everyone wanted to see (judging by the importance of the animation in the movie). While Al G Rhythm became the focus of the second movie, Lebron took too much time on air, and the Cartoon Characters were barely used at all. It wasn't a Looney Tunes Movie. It was a LBJ vs Ak G Rythm movie.

Dunno; this one had LeBron reconnecting with his (fictionalized) son and working out the issues that were driving wedges between them (with playing on the Tune Squad giving him the direct perspective he needed to do so). I worked in the background when we filmed Space Jam 2 at WB back in 2019. (I was one of the pirates, usually situated near the steampunks and warboys). It was hot, our holding area was a set of long tents on the side of the lot, and the first thing that struck all of us when we started was how dark the film felt. We changed directors partway through, and most of us knew even then that a lot of the 2 years between filming and release were going to be spent doing CGI and cleaning up the filming. There had been a lot of talk in 2019 of all of us getting recalled in 2020; our filming schedule was set around LeBron's basketball season, so any reshoots had to happen the next year. Obviously, that was the year of COVID, and no filming happened. I haven't seen the film, but the days I worked, but I will say that this movie had LOADS of money pouring into it. Way more than I'm used to for most films. Money was no object in the filming of this. And the crew was on their game, LeBron was even sporting neon green on his shoes because they movie would come out in 2021, and they wanted to CGI in the latest Nike's, which wouldn't be available while we were filming. Overall, I met amazing people on this film and got to make some good friends. But we all kind of knew the movie wasn't going to be that great... but it saved a lot of our necks, especially the SAG background in the specialty outfits, (most of the villains like the Wicked Witch and Pennywise), who were making sick amounts of money. For a lot of us, that time in 2019 made our entire year. So, I have mixed feelings about Space Jam 2. Honestly, even if it's not that good, it's still better than what the first director was going for. The difference is best described as the difference between Eric Stoltz as Marty McFly vs. Michael J. Fox; two actors with the same script trying to do the same character, but one is doing a really dramatic interpretation, and the other one can find the humor. That's the difference. Space Jam 2 was meant to be light and funny, but had the original director stuck, it would have been overly serious with more dramatic interpretations on the lines, as per the direction. So even if the movie isn't good, it's probably better than it would have been.

The holding area tents did get some AC's, but the first couple days there were mosquito problems because the tents used water barrels to secure the tents in place. Open water during summer = bugs. BUT... the food on set was absolutely fantastic, and the people I worked with were some of the most fun people I know in Los Angeles. One of the women on set is someone I went on some dates with before, and seriously the coolest woman I know in LA, and while on set I met someone new who I went out with a few times after our filming wrapped. It's like any other job: there are tradeoffs. I actually have a lot of good memories from the shoot, but it's because of the time I had hanging out with friends. The movie itself didn't really "wow" me, though the crew was pretty nice to us overall, (always a plus), and we had some good surprises. They gave us VISA gift cards on our last day of shooting, and there was a really fun day on set where Denzel Washington stopped by randomly to say Hi to LeBron. It's just one of those weird situations out here where everyone is working really hard and a lot of money is being spent to make something good, but you can tell the script/initial idea weren't that great to begin with. It didn't stop anyone from pouring buckets of money into it trying to make it better, though.

EXACTLY!! You nailed it dude! The irony here is that they insisted on making this look "progressive" when in reality they are still offering a useless character just to emphasize female power, only on a different package. After all these years they still think of her only for her sex and not for her character or potential as a Looney Toon. And that's what really pisses me off. In the comics, the best version of her in my opinion, she's a feisty, sassy, witty, impulsive, vengeful, fun-loving bunny that I can see perfectly teaming up with the likes of Harley Quinn. Doesn't that sound like an interesting and compact contender for entry into the modernized Looney Tunes pantheon? Nah! let's base all our logic on making a generic heroine who still remains forced with the other Looney Tunes and ending up with even more forced feminism than her original version. The world they choose for Lola doesn't come from footage from another Warner-owned film like most Loonies, but is a half-baked fanfic that betrays how little imagination they put into this version of the character. They thought so much of her as a woman that they put her in fucking Themyscira next to Wonder Woman, one of the greatest female icons in comics. And, in the imperious need to treat her as a powerful female character, what happens? Well, that they forget to treat her as a Looney Toon. They didn't want to create anything that came close to the previous versions or anything with Looney grace, they wanted to create something profitable, safe and so processed it hurts. That little moment in the original where she dribbles Pound's face (the orange monstar) has more cartoonishness than anything she does in this one. Lebron as a Looney Toon offers more cartoon charisma than this new flimsy version of Lola and that's the final nail in the coffin of this monumental failure. Anyways, that's my take on this doll. Good vid dud.

The most tragic thing about Lola is that WB already DID give her a unique and fun personality, with Kristen Wiig's portrayal of the character in The Looney Tunes Show. She was hyperactive, scatterbrained, impulsive, borderline crazy, and overall just a blast to watch. She brought a wonderful dynamic to the cast far beyond her original portrayal as just "the sexy girl bunny". She actually felt like a classic Looney Tunes character. And now it's like they just completely forgot about all of that.

@@LeopoldLitchenstein Can see both sides of things. Certainly, the "Looney Tunes Show" (and anything inspired by it) did make Lola more looney, which arguably makes her a more natural fit with rest of the characters and have a distinct personality, although it does feel a bit like an "in name only" take on the character. On the other hand, she was kinda flat in the original and I will freely concede that she wasn't the most dynamic character in the sequel/reboot/whatever. However, as someone who first saw her in the original, it was nice to see her acting more like her old self in "A New Legacy." Think I'm going to divide the difference say that, overall, I liked seeing old Lola return and that it was the right call, since it was a "Space Jam" sequel and all that, but will concede that they could've dug into her personality more. Her being the best conventional athlete and having a special relationship with Bugs are good traits, but there's plenty of room for expansion.

I would go as far as to say that Space Jam as a concept can _only work_ in the 90's back when it was first produced. Because back then, entertainment wasn't nearly as cynical and - quite frankly - _bitter_ as it is now. I think that has a lot to do with how integrated the internet has become in our lives now. Now a days, even months before a movie airs, people all over the world will make judgement calls on it and their opinions will be seen world-wide; and immediately after viewing a movie, their like or dislike of it travels just as fast. The 90's was an age of unbridled enthusiasm for any property that was coming next. And while Space Jam itself is just a marketing ploy to exploit the popularity of Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes, you can't deny that as a concept, it is a _lot_ of fun; it's like in the old days when a famous movie mascot would be paired with an athlete in funny, tongue-in-cheek style ads - like when Godzilla played a game of Basketball with Charles' Barkley. I haven't seen commercials that fun or that style in decades now. I think that's why in this day and age, commercials are only seen as things to be skipped; they're not fun anymore and nothing grabs our attention like they used to. And I think on some level, the original Space Jam lampoons the fact that it's an elongated marketing ploy much better than Space Jam: New Legacy does; the movie really only has a few moments where products like Nike are on display - but there's another scene earlier where Wayne Knight's character literally lists off all the products that Jordan has promoted in his career - and it's done so for laughs. (I think of it a lot like the Product Placement joke from Back in Action - the characters know what it is, but they're gonna enjoy it anyway.)

I watched the movie recently out of morbid curiosity, and I echo just all of your viewpoints with it. I've been telling my friends "Watch this movie solely for Don Cheadle and, against all odds, Wile E. Coyote". Al G. Rhythm is just exactly what you expect from a tech-based villain in a post-2020 movie, Don Cheadle just leans into the role and completely owns it, and any scene where he was involved was guaranteed to be a good one. And for some reason, Wile E. is the only character who feels like he's still operating under his classic cartoon sensibilities. Everyone else is just a weird homunculus of poses, catchphrases, and references, but Wile E. gets a scene where he debuts a bonkers Acme contraption, pours birdseed on it to lure the Roadrunner over to hit the button super-fast, help the team out by using it to shoot multiple basketballs, and then gets his comeuppance when he gets greedy and tries to use it as a chance to catch the Roadrunner and falls for his own prank. That is, part and parcel, exactly how a Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoon goes. It's like one really dedicated Wile E. Coyote fan got to get their scene in the movie while everything else got cut. Porky, Foghorn, Sylvester, Tweety, Yosemite, all of these characters exist to say or do one thing that you know them for and then step into the background for Bugs, Lola, and MAYBE Daffy (who's zany antics really just focus around him being an asshole more than anything else). Lola is such a big sticking point because she's literally just Space Jam 1 Lola, who was a boring character who's only real point of interest was she was a new Looney Tune which was novel, and on top of that, she was a girl, and she was serious about the game. So she was kind of a straight man, except...she never really played off anyone, she was just better than them and did her own thing. Then comes the Looney Tunes Show, and she's got a whole new personality; she's fully wacky and goofy, to the point where even Bugs and Daffy have to serve as the straight man to her antics. While still kind of cookie-cutter, this was at least more memorable (I've watched the scene where she calls Bugs and hits him with her car like fifteen times). Then Space Jam 2 reverts her to Space Jam 1 Lola. Is it possible that LTS Lola would've caused concerns because her wackiness would've been seen as ditziness, and as one of the only female Looney Tunes, she inadvertently becomes representative of her entire gender in a weird way? Like, would having the only significant female Looney Tune (sorry Granny) be a total ditz read poorly as "this is just how women be"? Possibly, which is why I think SJ2 Lola is generic but competent because when you only have one girl, it's more important to show her succeeding than it is showing her being silly, even when she's literally a cartoon. Regarding Lola in the Wonder Woman setting while Daffy and Porky are in the greater DC universe: I honestly think it's as simple, and depressing, as this: "Lola is the girl Looney Tune, so she has to be in a setting where a woman is the main hero, buuuuut we don't really have any of those, so we're gonna remove Wonder Woman from the DC universe and make her her own thing so Lola has somewhere to be". On top of that, the DC setting is specifically DC Animated, and I think the Wonder Woman setting is supposed to be _the movie._ Notice how both of the important scenes where the character refuses Bugs' offer (Daffy and Lola) are both animated settings, while the ones who are pretty accepting of the idea immediately are spliced into live-action movies. The character having to be convinced means their scene has to be longer, and I think the live-action scenes wouldn't hold up to a longer, more involved scene because they're all using old footage. Daffy's and Lola's scenes get to have new stuff created whole cloth for them. So they wanted Wonder Woman the movie for Lola, because remember girl power, but they didn't want to have to splice her in for too long, so they just animated a scene that was clearly meant to be the movie in spirit, which I think is why Wonder Woman simply _will not stop moving_ during her scene, because she's gesticulating like an actual actor might. It's extremely distracting.

My Wonder Woman theory is that sequence was supposed to be set in the Patty Jenkins live action Wonder Woman world, as the score and design are from the WW movies. I wonder if Covid prevented them from shooting it live, with the animated Lola inserted, and, this is what we got in it's place.

During the first parts of the film (i.e. the ones where Bugs and LeBron are journeying to get the others), I was like "Oh, they're referencing other franchises. Great!", but then as the movie progresses, I was a bit disappointed that that's what they kept doing on and on... I mean, I really love Looney tunes, but I agree that their usual "dynamics" were missing from the film. Tbh, the only ones I felt excited about during the "Basketball" arc of the movie was when the Looney tunes become 'looney' again, when they're in-character, but those were just a brief moment. Other than that, I agree with what most other people say: "You can replace the Looney tunes in this film with any other franchise and it won't make much of a difference". I observed this in many instances. Why are Granny, Sylvester, and Tweety Bird at different locations when most of the time, they are supposed to be together? Marvin could've fit perfectly with Daffy and Porky in the DC world, yet they left him out. If they managed to keep Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner's dynamic throughout the film, why didn't they keep the others' too? I also kinda have an issue with not having enough Looney tunes. Where's Witch Hazel, Pete Puma, Barnyard Dawg, Melissa Duck, Petunia Pig while Gossamer is in the film (not that I don't like him, it's just unfair that the others were left out))? There's also that 'controversial' character. I mean, if they can insert various franchises into the movie, why did they have to leave out a lot of the Looney Tunes cast in the process? :( TL; DR: A lot of the Looney Tune characters' dynamics with each other (which made them distinct) are missing from the film, making them removable/replaceable characters from their own franchise movie, and it's really disappointing. :(

Either way. Hearing about Lola's portrayal is heartbreaking. I watched the Space Jam movie on loop when I was a kid. Except I actually had to rewind the tape all the way back because it was the VHS era. Lola worked really well in the first movie, even if she wasn't much of a Loony Tune even then. I never understood why anyone would claim that Lola Bunny has no personality; She's cocky, she's competent, she's low-key into Bugs, but also wants Bugs to work for it. Since then, her character has had so many appearances elsewhere. Lola Bunny is to Space Jam what Harley Quinn is to the Batman Animated Series; Something works about her to the point that she's been reimagined several times since then. I kind of like the new look she got; Sex appeal can be part of a character's a personality, but in a second outing, you can do more. And from what it looks like, they took away something that shouldn't have been there, but they also didn't evolve the character further despite having plenty of material. Like, she doesn't have to be the stalker-ish Lola from some series, but having a similar dynamic with Bugs focused on how they work as a Loony couple would have been interesting to see.

I would like the record to show that this movie actually rips off a rip off of Space Jam. There's an old episode of Futurama titled "Time Keeps on Slipping" which in itself was a reference to the Seal version of the song "Fly Like an Eagle" from Space Jam (great song by the way, simply beautiful). In that movie the Planet Express gang has to help the professor outfit a group of genetically engineered mutants to engage in a basketball game against some extraterrestrial Harlem Globetrotters. Not only is a great parody of Space Jam, but it accomplishes that in half an hour. Also, one of the mutants is a humanoid spider, which is exactly what SJ2 has. So not only is this movie ripping off every other WB property, but they're actually ripping off a 20th Century Fox property as well. Bunch of hacks.

@@memesjack3615 when jordan was expected to do the actual *sequel* in the 90's, he declined .. THAT would've been THE SEQUEL ... which is EXACTLY why this one is NOT titled space jam 2 25 years later, it's * A NEW LEGACY* .. duh!! ... this version places emphasis on *hardcore gaming* VIA algorithm (which is popular these days) the underlying message had to do with FATHER & SON ... along with details of *friendships that denote FAMILY* which is WHY it captured the biography of Lebron, the Looney Tunes story *and* all Warner Bros. catalogues.

This is so disheartening. Everything about it. And that it's actually telling a true story. I work in a Big4 company and we were introduced to software that processes lots of data. Our assignment was to design the most successful movie ever. And I was disgusted to see that the result was a new Harry Potter movie; something that makes no sense since the story is over. And that's exactly what Space Jam 2 is about : just the creation of a movie, irrespective of logic, of art, of beauty. A movie designed by a machine... An algorithm, just to make money. That's our reality now. 💔

The thing is, if you’ve followed the Looney Tunes, then the original dynamics had already shifted with the Looney Tunes show (which I think was a great update to the characters) and I think that’s kinda factored in a bit (like Yosemite and Bugs getting along, as they were neighbors that somewhat got along in that show)

I feel like there's an actually interesting plot if they focused on the "big corporate entity takes these unique beings from their home planet/world and puts them in a big interconnected conglomerate" Show the toons as they were at the end of space jam 1, doing their toon thing - have the algorithm literally Seek Out another basketball player to try and forcefully recreate space jam 1. But in the end it's about revitalizing the Toons spirit/toon-ness, and breaking free of the corporate stranglehold of the algorithm. Like, you can still do a funny kids movie, but expand on the commentary elements of it to make it Good

Thank you. Have the in-universe audience be incredulous at the fact they greenlit Space Jam 2, hell, even commentate that this has been done before to middling success (they're choking down a third one with Dwayne Johnson next and I'm just like, "God no. Put it down.") and that they're trying to do something that only worked a grand total of once, under the right conditions. The goddamn stars had to align for the first one to happen.
