Actually, western leaders have met him many times. You can google how many meetings Merkel and Macron had with Putin. He was the one who decided to get far from others. The last time Macron visited the Kremlin, in February 7, Putin has put him in the other side of a long table.

@Manta Ray well we are not going to convince each other. But here is something to think about: since 8 years russian troops stand in Ukraine and annexing territory (like crimea) and they expected to win that battle in 5 days or so. So how much of a threat to attack russia was there planned. She said it was there to give Ukraine time. But she never said anything of "attacking". So yeah we are not going to convince one another. So let's leave it be. Merry Christmas and a happy new year I wish you.

And I was reading recently that Zelenskyy, Macron (and I think Merkel?) all sat down with Putin in Paris in 2019 for negotiations. The description of the meeting shows that Putin isn’t interested in all these great connections that the panel above is talking about. The following meeting was cancelled in 2020 because of Covid. And later the Kremlin refused to meet Zelenskyy in Donbas for further conversations. In spring 2021, the Kremlin announced negotiations will only be made after a “regime change” in Kyiv

Everything my family and friends get together to do includes eating or we feel cheated:) I wouldn't have thought others didn't do the same and it would seem strange to me to spend time with friends and there be no meals involved. It's communal. We even plan hikes into the mountains around eating, either in the woods with small portable fire stoves or pizza joints and buffets after the trek is complete. There's something about huddling around a fire, eating good food, sharing our thoughts, laughing, enjoying the company. Maybe that's why I always hated 'dinner dating' bc it seemed too intimate for me. Eating is something most enjoyed when you are at ease with no sense of anxiety, being in the presence of others you know, not quite as trusting as sleeping but vaguely reminiscent.

How naive can Peterson be? Western politicians invited, sat down, and spoke with him regularly before the war. Obama and Putin even had lunch together in 2015 if that's worth noting. Politicians in my country Austria even joked with him, our previous foreign minister even invited Putin to her wedding and danced with him not long ago. None of it changed his authoritarian, imperialistic, and murderous intentions, as we've seen and as the Ukrainians now get to experience, and why would it? Would Stalin or Hitler have changed if someone had invited them more often to a dinner? Btw, Trump told Fox News in March that he would threaten to nuke Russia if he were still president instead of sitting down with Putin. Does Peterson even listen to his political hero?

Fun to listen those conversations. Tho still a bit scary that reality could appear as putins police, knock at my door and try to bring me to die on Ukraine land, as second militarization wave would start. Thats special feeling, that some strong uncontrollable wind of history, could catch me out and unwillingly throw far away from my home, to die on foreign land. I read about that in Tolstoy or Vasily Grossman novels, but its feels abstract till day, that i for first time realize that im at risk to be forced to participate in war. But i guess, Ukrainian got that feeling since 24 feb, as Russian solders are aswell. We have great amount literature which describes that all, but why we still have go through it over and over again. Still, its just police, not a rocket that can fly right in my window. I still sit there in my Moscow apartments. And why that im here safely listening JP, instead of actively protesting and probably being jailed? Thats also the question i have to ask myself over and over

I'd even resort to accepting an overtly religious government at this point to claw back a little of what we've lost before it's too late. Sadly the only things that seem to compete in ability to provide a higher moral power are nationalism and socialism, the first can be problematic and the second seems guaranteed to be ruinous.

It was deliberate but had nothing to do with anything in the western cultural zeitgeist (Im still baffled people point to western culture as the reason for this war, its nonsense). Ukraine was planning to switch a bulk of their energy grid over to the EU from Russia on 24.02 and during this period of switch would be in an autonomous state of operation. Russia was hoping to exploit this fact as the chaos might grind electricity operations to a halt. Also consider that theres a huge celebration of Victory Day in Russia on the 9th of May, which would have been right on time with plans for Kremlin to parade their new 21st century victory.

The key to piece is that there will be no peace because this is not a dispute, it is an existential struggle. regardless of what you think about the morality of one side of the other, the practical facts are that a Hegemon never brooks the existence of a rival castle. One or the other will be destroyed, no less inevitably than two species feeling the same ecological niche will never just "get along". America and its global system is the world hegemon. Russia, as the Soviet union, lost the cold war, which was an existential struggle. In every other instance of this throughout human history the losing side was dissolved, at least as a competitive power, by the winner. we can make the case that because of nuclear weapons this process has been delayed by 30 years, but as the old saying goes "you can do everything with a bayonet except sit on it", and ultimately that bill will have to come do. Russia, in terms of the geopolitical entity that we understand it as today, is very near its end; not because of anything anyone else is doing to it, but because of what it has done to its own society over the last century (demographic, social, and political suicide). Whether it takes others with it or not is the open question.
