Shout out to the actor who played the guy that Ellie shot (Brian?). He really portrayed the panic, fear, and desperation of the moment. My emotions were all over the place. I knew that he would have killed Joel and I knew that he didn't deserve mercy. But the desperate pleadings of a paralyzed man who knew he was doomed were just so powerful. When a supporting actor with 60 seconds of screen time has that kind of effect on me, I know I'm watching a great show.

what really got me about that guy was that he looked young enough to barely be a "man" and was really just still a kid, because he was so badly hurt and scared that really came through in that moment. Props to the writers. They are doing one thing most video games don't, and one thing even TLOU didn't do until the second game. Reminded the player that the "bad guys" you are shooting are people who have lives and loved ones and may not see themselves as bad guys from their perspective. So what happens when instead of acting like a violent gun firing bad guy, they beg for their life and show how terrified they are of dying? Doesn't change the result, he wasn't thinking of that when he was trying to kill Joel, but it does hit pretty hard.

For Kat, I hope this helps. The issue with travling strait across the US from Boston/Massachusetts to Montana is that Interstate 90 takes you thru a bunch of densely populated cities between Boston and Chicago and even up into Wisconsin and MInnesota. i grew up in Chicago and live in Boston and have made that trip many times. You go thru Buffalo and Cleveland close to Detroit into Chicago past Milwaukee and Minneapolis to The Dakotas to get west to Montanna. Where as the more southern route they took that lands them in Kansas City avoid more densely populated areas. As Joel stated int he woods that there is less chance of runnign into clickers but not people. I also imagine that 20 years post appocolypse some of the I-90 corridor is pretty messy.
@gnomadD_
@gnomadD_ Жыл бұрын
I was going to say something similar... but interesting to learn that their route would bypass more major population centres... I would imagine that after 20 years without any maintenance, many routes would no longer be passable with a vehicle. All it would take is one collapsed bridge for them to possibly have to double back dozens of miles if not more! BTW, this part of the story in the games, is apparently in Pittsburg which, from my understanding of the geography, is completely going the wrong direction.
@ryanmedina5090

@@gnomadD_ actually Pittsburgh is on the western side of Pennsylvania. It’s completely the right direction for where they are going. If you’re avoiding I-90 then that route makes total sense. I am assuming that the reason they went SW via Kansas City, Missouri instead of straight W via Cleveland/Chicago is the roads weren't cleared by FEDRA also. Cleveland and Chicago are LARGE cities that could FLOOD and one or both probably didn't make it the full 20 years so there was no reason to clear and maintain a trade route to a location where there were no QZ's.
@ChibiHoshiDragon
@ChibiHoshiDragon Жыл бұрын
@@gnomadD_ We know from Episode 1 that FEDRA was transporting goods to the QZ's. For instance, we know for sure that Atlanta was where the bullets and pills came from. We also know they had radio contact and therefore, logically, they would have information about road conditions/collapses/etc From epi 2 - Not every city was able to be bombed enough to have a QZ created and maintained. From this episode we know that FEDRA cleared the roads they used with bulldozers. Logically, we can deduce that Chicago and Cleveland probably didn't make it and there wasn't a reason to clean the roads. After all, they both are prone to floods, especially Chicago.
@biglu323

@35:53 - Looking at the highway route that they take on a map , I'm imagining that Joel detoured far out of range of Chicago,. Because it's a big highly populated area , most likely there would be a lot of infected there and he was avoiding driving near it.

As soon as I saw her pull out *THE* joke book I actually threw my fists sky high. And I’m so glad that they added the diarrhea joke because I was afraid they would *run* out of ideas. But seriously, this show is so insanely faithful to the game that it doesn’t feel like a show but almost like an expansion pass/extended cut of the game. Even though I do miss the scene of Joel teaching Ellie how to use a rifle and then saying “No matter what happens, you make every show count” I still love him teaching her how to use the pistol because a) it shows the bond between these two growing and b) it tells the audience that Ellie had some training from FEDRA so her learning quickly feels natural. And now we are getting to see the more human side of the people who were trying to kill Joel and Ellie in Kansas City (instead of Pittsburgh like in the game). Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin said their inspiration came from how throughout history there have been cases where the revolution that usurps a repressive regime becomes just as bad if not worse than the previous regime. Also loved that we got to see Jeffery Pierce (aka Tommy from the games) finally show up in the show as Perry the right hand man of Kathleen.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Also for Kat, the main freeways or interstates always hit major cities despite not going a straight line. It is more likely for those to be built to last and with many lanes to get through. Traveling through smaller cities would have smaller, less built up structures. They can also ramble as well.

@kat I live here and I had to look up highways, and you are right, there are more direct routes. I just assume the interstate highway system had degraded somewhat in the last 20 years. In the game they go to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania but the locations they had access to up in Canada, where they were filming, didn't quite fit so Craig and Neil decided on KC since it still fit with their journey and teh specific place didn't matter as much. The difference in travel time gave them more time to have Joel and Ellie speak. They speak about it in the TLOU podcast, I love listening to that right after, good for insights from Troy, Craig, and Neil.

Kat, as another commenter said from Boston, Massachusetts a person could take Interstate 90 west but that interstate runs through the capital city of New York state.. which is Albany. Then through several other highly populated cities like Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, NY. Going through St. Louis Missouri and Kansas City Missouri on interstate 70 west is also pretty illogical in my opinion but it may have been the only way to avoid going through Chicago, Illinois.. which the 3rd highest populated city in the US. My job requires me to constantly travel across the US also helps me to know the best routes for travel but this information probably wouldn't be common knowledge for a regular person. Interstate 70 west, then interstate 80 west would have been the better route for Joel to take after they were about a 100 miles west Chicago. On Interstate 80 west.. Des Moines, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska are the only higher populated cities that you have to drive through before reaching the state of Wyoming. The only exception is that interstate 80 is often closed or impassable at several parts of Wyoming during the winter months because of mountains, heavy snowfall and icy conditions. In fact, interstate 80 is my favorite highway to drive on in the entire US.. after getting through the horrible traffic in Chicago for this particular reason.

With regard to why they went to Kansas City, I can't answer that for sure. The quickest route today would be to take I-90 straight across by the Great Lakes, around Chicago and then through Wisconsin, Minnesota and South Dakota to Cody, WY. In an apocalypse there are a couple of downsides I can see to taking this route. First, you'd be passing through several major and minor population centers (chiefly Chicago, but also Cleveland), which could pose a risk in terms of infected and / or Fedra. The second one is that these roads all pass through northern areas that tend to get a lot of snow in winter (especially on the East side of any of the Great Lakes). So there's no telling what condition these roads would be in after 20 years with no maintenance. I'm betting that Febra only clears the roads near the Quarantine Zones. Third, judging by their clothing it's probably fall, so camping outside in the fall / winter without a campfire would be risky (though Bill's supplies might have been able to provide things to keep them warm). By traveling South it would take longer, but you could avoid Chicago (though they'd still have St. Louis), possible bad roads by the Great Lakes, and have warmer weather for camping. Those are my theories anyway.

35:34 I'm not sure why they went to Kansas City, but they had to cross the Mississippi river, which runs pretty much the full length of the United States from top to bottom. I would have stayed further north, but maybe they were trying to avoid Chicago, since the infected are concentrated in major cities, and Chicago is one of the largest cities in the USA... Yikes. So, anyways - maybe they stayed south of Chicago and that was the first bridge that wasn't destroyed or blocked that they could cross the Mississippi river.

Bit late to the party on this one. Watching with my dad and we didn't have time last weekend. So about gas, it's a two part thing. First off it evaporates easily, so a fuel container is mostly air tight, but not completely, so the gasoline that had evaporated does disappear a little there, leaving a lower gasoline to fluid ratio. The second one is like you mentioned degradation, as the gasoline oxidizes. As burning something is basically rapid oxidation, this means that parts of the gasoline is no longer combustible. Lots of problems can come from using old gasoline. A truck like they were driving is probably fairly robust against it, but stuff like the injectors can get clogged. Also uneven combustion which would be a problem for a lot of modern motors, but probably not an old truck like that. And some other stuff but those are probably the biggest two for cars.

If you hop on to Google maps and get directs from Boston, Ma. to Cheyenne, Wy. you’ll notice one of the routes takes you through Kansas City, Mo. But, who knows if there are other reasons Joel has for taking that route 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t know how relevant it it, (I don’t really remember this part of the game-then again, they’re doing more than the game did, even here,) but I believe North Kansas City, an area within Kansas City was a sundown town. I found that interest, considering 🤷🏻‍♀️ Also, if someone is trying to kill you or might kill you, (like a hostage situation,) you want to humanize yourself as much as possible.

@@KatSonny didn't Kat ask about why they were driving through Kansas City (35:30). I got the impression the question is why drive through Kansas. Which would be south. Historically Kansas City was one of the cattle hubs to the east coast. Leading to transportation corridors from the Plain states. Ranchers would drive their cattle to the trains leading to Kansas City. I could see Joel and Ellie drive southwest, bypass many of the cities. But they need to cross the Missouri River. Leaving them few options.

Still not answering the why go through Kansas CITY there. But many others have given great answers to this (I80 might be more direct but will take you through Chicago and Cleveland that are major cities and possibly swarmed with infected, FEDRA etc + take you through colder states that might have snow and bad roads that have not be maintained for the last 20 years)
@Dularr

@@KatSonny Because all interstates go through or near cities. It more accurate to say the US interstate highway system connects cities. Joel and Ellie started out in Boston, which is the start point for I-90. Runs through Chicago, runs through the north part of Wyoming, ending in Seattle, Washington. I-80 starts in New Jersey, near New York City, runs near Chicago, through the southern part of Wyoming. Ending in downtown San Fransico, California. I-70 starts near Baltimore, Maryland, runs through Kansas City, Missouri, Southern part of Wyoming ending in Utah. The debate in the comment section is when and why did Joel and Ellie switch from I-90 to I-70. I agree with the comments. They likely wanted to avoid Chicago. With both I-90 and I-80 are well traveled and were likely clogged with broken down cars. I-70 probably had fewer cars, but it does run through Kansas City. Which was unavoidable as it has a bridge over the Missouri River. Finally, when Joel and Ellie had to get off the interstate, they got completely lost trying to find their way back to the interstate. Before cell phones, GPS and car navigation, it could take hours trying to find the interstate again. You see that in many American road trip movies, people getting lost in cities, trying to find the interstate again. When Joel and Ellie got lost, I felt for them.

The reason they chose Kansas City in the show is bc Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the place where they shot the show, looks most like Kansas City and so it's easy to shoot and change in post. They also said that it could have be any large city and doesn't necessarily have to be Kansas CIty, so don't get stuck on the name of the city itself. Also, Kansas City is in the middle of the US so it's not really out of the way, just a little more south than should be if you want a direct shot to Wyoming.

Standard gasoline deteriorates after a few months. Even stabilized gasoline will go bad after a year. For Kat’s question about the route. There are two main interstates (highways) that go east/west across the country. These are I70 and I80 (I stands for interstate). I think Ellie mentioned they were on I70 which leads them right through the Kansas City area. The overpass where they stopped had a connection to I35 which traverses north/south and could connect them to I80 and then take them to Wyoming. As to why they chose one over the other - I70 is slightly more direct since from Boston I80 would go a little more northwest and I70 would be a bit more southwest. Changing at I35 would be a good place to switch, but other than that not much reason to choose one over the other. Maybe to avoid some big cities. 🤷🏻‍♂️

SPOILER ALERT!!! DON'T READ THIS COMMENT UNLESS YOU KNOW THE WHOLE STORY FROM THE GAME! Another thing they changed from the game is when Ellie tells Dina who was her first kill, it was the hunter that was about to kill Joel, but in this version she says that wasn't her first. The sad part is that I think we're going to find out her first kill was Riley after she finally turned. I could be wrong, but she was only bitten 3 weeks before she met Joel and Tess so to fit in this time frame that doesn't leave many people that she could have shot. Really heartbreaking if you think about it. This part is not so much a spoiler but in the game version Ellie was reading a comic book in the back seat when she complained about the comic book she was reading was a 'To be continued' leaving it at a 'clif-hanger'. So what did the people at Naughty Dog and HBO do to us? Leave this episode off at a 'CLIF-HANGER!!!'
