I think that, yes, Ellie did want to make Sam feel better. But more than anything, I think that she was praying that this would work. She didn't have the chance to try it out on Tess cuz of the time factor. Here, she figured she had a shot.

That big guy is Stage 4 of the infection, known as a “Bloater”. It takes 10yrs for an infected to become one. Usually they don’t get to that stage because they don’t live that long due to environmental conditions speeding up the bodily decay or because in those 10yrs an infected will most likely have several run ins with survivors were they can get shot and killed. So it’s a rare one.

Kinda brought home the point from last episode when Ellie asks Joel why keep going and Joel said family. Henry had to kill the only family he had and I guess saw no point in going forward.

Poor dude was never gonna recover from that trauma, you don't come back from that, he was doing everything to keep Sam alive then suddenly he turns he didn't know he had been bitten and he shoots him, it all happens so fast, but he just doesn't wanna live anymore, not without Sam.

The reason Kathleen wants to kill Ellie and Sam is because she understands how revenge works and that they will be a threat when she successfully kills Henry and Joel.

Yeah, one of the changes from the game is how QUICKLY we move from one plot point to the next - which makes all the tragedy feel a bit more overwhelming at this stage of the story. In the game, you get 3-4 hours of exploring, scavenging, puzzle-solving, and combat, and only THEN does the next emotional gut punch hit. In this show, we're getting hit almost every single episode, so it builds up faster.

I think Kathleen was a great leader, but her rage over her brother's death (which sounded pretty bad) and then that rage turning to vengeance pretty much became her purpose. She had lost touch with the bigger picture at this point. You saw that when she saw the sinkhole and instead of getting her group the hell away from that, she stayed quiet and kept going JUST because she wanted blood. She led her group to a mass slaughter and at that point, she had nothing left to lose.

And she went against her brother's last words, her brother told her to forgive and she didn't want to kill just Henry but also she wanted to kill a little 8 year old deaf kid with Leukemia, absolutely heartless and now one of the safe places in the country is overrun by runners, clickers and a fucking bloater, her right hand man, Perry (that actor plays Tommy in the game btw) they had to handle that he told her twice and she was like nah I need to get Henry first. I think she got her karma, she was talking about how kids die all the time and got killed by a kid that turned into a clicker, kids die indeed and then they come back and kill you, Kathleen!

I really dug Kathleen. She was good for what she was, and Lynskey did a great job with her. And i do think that it slowly becomes quite apparent that while she was the correct leader for overthrowing FEDRA... She is not the correct person to build something worthwhile. I think that her brother, based on what we were told, would be a better leader during peacetime. But alas, he is gone. And rn they're still in the throes of post-revolution. And her group is more than okay with killing unarmed prisoners (i think that someone like Michael would've simply exiled all the informants) And while she was pretty much psychotic by the end, i do see her POV, kinda. Their group is a vengeful one that doesn't forgive. So if someone hurts on of theirs (Bryan, for example), she wants to show that there will be justice. And if she does kill Joel, she can't just keep Ellie around and make her a part of the group. And there's no point in wasting resources on a prisoner. Same with Sam. It's ruthless, but this is the society they've created. You live by the sword, you die by the sword. And their group very much dies by the sword. I LOVED how she met her end. The show actually really helped to make the dog eat dog philosophy of the Hunters from the games (the group of enemies in Pittsburgh who inspired the folks in Kansas City in the show. They also overthrew FEDRA and are ruthless) a bit more understandable to me. The show retroactively adds some more depth to that group.

2:00 in a tweet the actress said she went for an "organizer" which are people behind the scenes who set up major events and have to coordinate and do all the logistics - it's what her revolutionary brother would have been (it's also what I study & do). Defined as "building relationships based off shared values towards collecive action through commitments" - activists are the ones who go to a protest, organizers are the ones who planned it. Her brother probably built up the networks and everything, and Kathleen was the one to execute the insurrection plan they all came up with. She didn't do the part where you listen to others, host meetings & one-on-ones, collect feedback, making decisions (mostly) by consensus. probably because she's obsessed with revenge

I think Kathleen's point in killing Sam and Ellie was that they would want revenge after Joel and Henry are executed. She thinks they'll respond the same way she is after her brother's death.

9:00. Not even 2 weeks ago, Kathleen's Militia killed all of FEDRA in Kansas City for the freedom of the people. But, her quest for revenge against Henry for getting her brother killed resulted in her, Perry, & most of her militia getting killed by this Horde of Infected. So, now there is hardly anyone left to defend the city as the Horde makes its way towards it. This reminds me of how in Part 2 of the games a person's quest for revenge for someone they love can result in losing everything.

Apparently, Sam was not deaf in the game, but the show had him be deaf for...storytelling reasons. They even cast Keivonn Woodard, who is deaf and seems to have been in only one other thing, back in 2018.

Which worked very well. I like how zombie Sam was just sitting on the bed, because Ellie was sleeping, and he couldn’t hear anything to know when to attack until she approached him. Also, makes the situation a lot more sad and scary.

What's crazier is that you know Sam's going to turn, he then turns and attacks Ellie that morning. You know he's not coming back but the moment Henry shoots Sam. Everyone's mind goes into shock, like OMFG he just killed him. Even watching you on this. Like I don't know how they tapped into that feeling like you can't believe it. So nuts.

I was soooooo happy to see the show bring the classic Bloater death animation from the games to live action (and they gave it to Tommy's actor from the games haha). I had a stupid grin on my face and threw my arms up in the air in a silent cheer (it was 0345 when i first watched the episode lol)

The "super clicker" is called a Bloater, and it's what happens to infected who live for over a decade. It's the last stage of evolution that we know of right now.

Kathleen used the death of her brother to inspire the uprising as everyone sometimes knows it takes the death of a great person to inspire the people. She kind of reminds me of Meg from The Leftovers, never would you have thought that soft-spoken, meek Meg would become leader of the GR. It was these qualities that made her truly disturbing antagonist because you don't think of these types of people to do such things.

I think Ellie honestly thought that was going to work, or she wouldn't have let herself fall asleep. Kathleen, Henry and Joel, everything we've seen them each do, is for their brothers. Kathleen saved all those people from 20 years of murder, torture and rape under the corrupt KC FEDRA. She was cold, but did she ever get to do anything to anybody that wasn't, at the least, a rat?

He did say his mom was nearby. He was calling for his mom. Maybe that was the reason for her saying "kids die all the time." (Granted, my first reaction would have been to yell "so do brothers" back at her.)

I've seen what feels like the whole internet misunderstanding Kathleen. People follow someone who executes and has the will to follow through. Her brother being the charismatic leader is how she was in a position to take charge when he was arrested and it's pretty clear she's ruthless, which helped them overthrow FEDRA. That's it, though. It's also pretty clear she's a shit leader otherwise, makes rash decisions, is spiteful, can't adjust her priorities, and doesn't consider what's in the best interest of her people. She's someone who indeed would pretty quickly have disgruntled followers; she pretty clearly would react poorly to criticism. Which would eventually lead to her dealing with her own rebellion.

I blame Henry. You always check the children for wounds after an encounter. Perfect example is Terminator 2. Sara Conner checks John for wounds after escaping the mental hospital.

To lose that, regardless of whether or not he gets to grieve a little beforehand, would've devastated him. In the "Inside the Episode" segment, Mazin stated along the lines of that you do all these things to fight fate, sometimes it's horrible and brutal things you have to do... but when the loss still happens regardless, it'll make it that more devastating.

I think Melanie Lynskey was really bad casting tbh. She is the least intimidating person, because of her voice and face, and yet it seems like they're trying to make her a big bad boss type.
