The latest on - Sugar
1. WHO report on non-sugar sweeteners (NSS), March 2023
- WHO recommends against the use of NSS to control body weight or reduce the risk of noncommunicable diseases like diabetes, heart disease, etc.
- includes all synthetic and naturally occurring or modified non-nutritive sweeteners, e.g. aspartame, saccharin, sucralose, stevia, and stevia derivatives.
2. Sugar consumption guidelines -
- WHO (also USA, Aus, Canada, NZ) recommends limiting added sugar intake to 5-10% of daily diet. This is about 6-12 tsp/ day.
3. Take-aways
- Don't replace sugar with non sugar sweeteners, e.g. in your chai/ coffee, etc.
- Can safely have sugar in your chai/ coffee, sherbets, home made laddoo, kheer, etc., while staying within recommended sugar limits,
- what we need to avoid are packaged foods like cereals, juices, colas, energy drinks, ketchup, jams, cookies, biscuits, etc.,
- seasonal fruits like mango, are safe for everyone to eat.

Just omit white refined sugar, other natural sweet food will not affect blood sugar. Any amount of refined sugar goes directly into blood and increases sugar levels. This is problem. Sweet coming from natural sources will not go directly into blood. You can experience on your own.

Yes.Eating seasonal and eating home food .Everything is perfect if we follow our ancestors in their eating habits .Regular exercise, good food n enough rest is the key to good health .Rujutha ji always gives the best tip and no fancy stuff in her diet which is so convenient n easy to follow

I am a senior citizen & your guidelines regarding Sugar & Sugar additives / Sweetner is very informative. Congratulations to Rujuta Diwekar for making the viewers of your channel aware regarding Food & Health related matters for so long time, in the era, when non communicable ailments have become significant. Can jaggery be an ideal replacement for sugar ? Can we have more Fruits, although the Fruits are very Sweet? Can I get the reply from the great Dietician & Health Advicer herself. God Bless You.

Completely agree. I never consume sugar free stuff. But I started drinking tea/coffee without sugar so that I can indulge in occasional sweet treats (small portion). And never shy away from fresh fruits which are way way better than fruit juices.

Mam, I’m 47 yo and stopped any kinda white/brown/ etc..sugar, biscuits, any kinda sweets. Started from March 2023 and lost 6 kgs from 73 to 67 😊

I have always found your concepts very apt. Especially speaking about eating local and home made. I feel all these non sugar sweeteners and healthy packaged snacks and different types of artificial packaged non dairy milks and packaged juices etc are just a propaganda by the manufacturer lobby. I’m myself a doctor and a fitness enthusiast and I believe in what Rujuta is saying about sugar! In fact, I eat ghee-shakkar with lunch every now and then and I've maintained almost the same (and healthy) weight in last few years.

Better not to lump non dairy milk with sweeteners. Not all are made the same. Eating environmentally sustainable options and something that lowers animal abuse is always the better choice!

Maybe its correct. But in my case , occasionally i eat outside food. I used to take sugar only in my morning tea, once in a day. But somehow for a long period of time, I was in constant pain of severe headache , felt heavy in my head, pain in my eyes, always in a drowsy mode. But few months back ,i started using jaggery, and slowly everything got better. But sometimes when I feel like I need to take sugar, I add it in my food. Otherwise as a vegetarian and a fruit lover, I try to balance it all. Thanks for the information BDW. It is useful

अगदी बरोबर आहे मॅडम. घरी केलेल्या पदार्थांना कॅलरईच्यआ नावाखाली खायचं नाही, नखरे करायचे पण कोल्ड्रिंक्स, चाॅकलेट्स,कुकीस्स, पेस्टीस खायच्या. खुप महत्वाचा मुद्दा मांडला त्या बद्दल धन्यवाद. तसेच प्रोटीन वरील माहितीची वाट पहात आहे. धन्यवाद.

Turai Or jhinga is called " Ridge Gourd ". But how can we eat de thorny hard scaly skin with sesame, made in2 a chutney...& no recipe given by u dear.? 😮 i drink it's natural sweet soup, just peel & seminar boil it 2 minutes.. same with bhindi👌 🙏💐

I do not think so. Some sweets used sparingly are okay. It should not be regular. Half a spoon sugar in tea taken twice daily should be okay even for a person with more than ideal weight. But exercising is a must. I suggest Surya Namaskar and body weight exercises. Strict dieting never works

Cigarette addiction cant be overcomed by cutting cigarette from 20 to 1 , you have to go on absolute zero ADDED SUGAR IS NOTHING BUT ADDICTION *Asians are already more prone for CVD ,IR ,DM like NCD , compared to Caucasians thats why healthy BMI cutoff for Asians is below 23*

Please pin the WHO report so that we could have a direct look into it.Also I personally would like to see what they have said about stevia as opposed to aspartame.Stevia is a natural product, so I would like to know how it causes diabetes and heart diseases in the long run. Aspartame, yes. The literature is available.

I agree with this totally. I have had a diabetes checkup and found out that I was low point on sugar inspite of having mangoes and other fruits regularly. I kept wondering how. But this explains how natural sugar does not cause diabetes but artificially ones thru packaged foods does.
