In a twisted way, this was sort of prescient: the wii u gave way to the switch, which was an even crazier combination of a handheld device and home console, and Nintendo doubled down on third party support, somehow getting some flipping insane titles (witcher 3 and Doom) to fit on cartridges. It's pretty flipping wild.
@sleepysera

I feel like the Switch is basically Nintendo's way of saying "Oh so the only thing you like us for now are our handhelds?? WELL FINE THEN. Have a handheld that is so good that it can run proper, actual console games and *never* complain again!" And that worked, because..yes. Of course it did. Who the fuck wouldn't love that?

@@sleepysera As a somewhat avid nintendo fan who has/had a wii, a wii u, and a switch (though my time with Nintendo started with the DS and I don't have any nostalgia for anything earlier than that) I'd just say that it's the smartest decision that Nintendo ever made, less because of the whole snark of "Oh you only like us for our handhelds? well HERE!" and more because they realized that there's some untapped potential to make something that's actually unique. Honestly, the thing I adore about Nintendo is that they understand the concept of making a console into something that has personality and is more than a slightly worse version of a gaming computer with a buncha shitty decisions attached to it.

@@alexnoble400 well that seems to be fixed considering how many indie games and new 3rd party titles are now coming in. The only thing it's missing it's the ports of games that can no longer be bought like Legend of Zelda Twilight princess and Kid Icarus for the 3ds (or at least a remastered one, PLEASE SAKURAI LET IT HAPPEN). Which to my dismay, may start appearing in the Nintendo Switch online subscription (minus the 3ds since they wouldn't be crazy enough to port 3ds games when the 3ds is still operational prior to the end of their eshop.......right?)

To use a term that yahtzee himself coined ironically: PC MASTER RACE MUTHAFUKKAS! But seriously, this video is just legitimizing his ironic statement. Consoles are going the way of the dinosaurs. A console cannot be continually physically upgraded the way a pc can (I've had the same pc for the last 15 years the same way Thesius had the same ship his whole lifetime. But the gradual upgrades are easier to justify financially. New console generation? I just gotta upgrade 2 or 3 parts to stay ahead. And I can still do my taxes) Not to mention the legacy support (dosbox) and ease of piracy in the face of strong-arm business practices. The only dark horse is the mobile gaming trend that looks like it will render all but the most niche hardcore gaming obsolete.

Austin Elliott The word "opinion" doesn't belong there. You are speaking the objective truth. I still have a PlayStation 2, a heart-wrenchingly pleasant memory of what consoles used to be, what true consoles are: pick-up-and-play, no-clicking-on-shit fun. That is what they were and what they are supposed to be. Modern "consoles" betrayed what consoles were about, and now I exclusively PC game.

Austin Elliott I still own my ps2 as well, I also still own my snes and a lot of games for it. Like you Austin Elliott I am a pc/Nintendo gamer. if I want to play alone or online I use my pc, if I want to play with friends I use my 3ds or Wii u. the problem with pc gaming is that myself and my husband both have a gaming rig in our living room just so we can play games together, but then again pc's have never been marketed as something the family can play on in the living room so that ok.before the pc's we had 2 Xbox 360's as most 360 co-op is online co-op. I don't understand why so many next gen console games don't even have a simple 2 player mode, as a kid now you have to have a console in your room as you cant hog the TV to play in the living room if other people cant join in. as a grown up with a partner you either sit here playing a game and ignoring your other half (or never get to play on the console) or you have to buy 2 consoles 2 TV's 2 games and 2 controllers to be able to play together! this is what I love about the Wii u, my hubby and I loved the old dynasty warriors games and when hyrule warriors came out we could both play at the same time on the same console even using an old Wiimote instead of the new Wii u one. and the Wii u is backwards compatible with all the old controllers and games!

+Austin Elliott Happy the Nintendo/PC gamer seems to be a bit of thing. Because I am one. Weirdly I see people taking some weird pride in playing games on PS4 and XBone.Why are they hoping for a console release if they can already play it on pc? Seriously, why? Unless your pc is absolute crap there's no good reason for it, and if your pc is absolute crap maybe you should've considered adding your console budget to your pc budget and you'd probably have a better system to play games on. Next to that you don't have to rebuy the bloody game when it's rereleased on a console that can actually properly run it.

So basically, he pretended to talk shit on Zelda because we know what he would say, so diehards would cry and leave the video early, to only shit on the Wii U and Nintendo while simultaneously defend them to bash the wannabe PC XBOX One since the Wii U is an actual video game console that unfortunately has a third party support problem like its predecessors. Good video, and as much as I'm enjoying my Wii U, it's a shame that it seems like Nintendo doesn't know what to do with it now. I remember when I was at E3 and they showed that trailer with a whole bunch of Mature games, as well as EA of all companies on stage with them promising a variety of crap that never showed up, that Nintendo was going back to its SNES days where it was a true gamer's machine. Now it's in the same place the N64 was in when then Nintendo President Howard Lincoln had to defend N64 saying "it's not about quantity, it's about quality" when people were saying "N64 HAZ NO GAIMEZ!" Then last Christmas it was apparent they gave up the whole reason they slapped on "U" at the end (because it's a console that U can make your own) and just resorted to marketing to families and kids to "upgrade" their Wii to Wii U. It's like having that girlfriend that none of your friends like. She's great, but for some reason your friends can see all of the problems with her that you overlook, so they try to stay away from her.

@ChristophBrinkmann
@ChristophBrinkmann 10 жыл бұрын
Being a former N64 owner myself, I'll be the first to admit that it had some quality titles (which admittedly haven't aged well.) I suppose my main point is that if the big N were as strict on quality control as that message Lincoln said implied, then somebody should've told Titus Software to start all over or go eff off with their giant steaming pile of poo they called a game. Ultimately Nintendo's let me down with the Wii. I actually have more classic games on its v-library, and I've played those games for longer periods of time than its stock Wii titles and from what I've seen with the Wii U, I see no reason to upgrade. (Not that Microsoft gets off the hook, mind you.)

Exactly, I remember last year when this game was getting tons of praise which doesn't make sense at all. It's the same as A Link to the Past and it doesn't mask it at all, it has the exact same overworld as it because Nintendo couldn't be bothered to make something new, the same visuals, same items, same dual-world concept, same goddamn game. The only difference besides the useless item rental was the plot which is so insultingly stupid that I refuse to believe that anyone willing to defend it has a properly functioning brain.
@zyad48
@zyad48 9 жыл бұрын
Adam Slivka the plot aint winning any awards but maybe its cuz fans prefer to see what made the games good back in the day even though I would personally like to see new stuff happen, in sonic's case, I would prefer that sega would go back to the old working ways that sonic had, for zelda, it had something going for it, although it's like fanservice, if you wanted to play ALTTP with 3d visuals and a new portrait power then this game would seem like heaven, i'm going to get it because it looks fun, i wouldn't defend this game, i mean it doesnt do anything new which really makes me wonder why ppl still try to defend COD since it does next to nothing new with the exception of COD:AW with the double jump, but thats it. its like having a graphically enhanced remake of ALTTP on a handheld which is good, i mean its like having both cave story and cave story 3D, my point is that the game just looks good and ppl like to see the old stuff that worked. plus as for the locale being the same, this game was sold as a follow up to ALTTP despite it pretty much just being a remake since in ALTTP we're told that the master sword stays in its place for the rest of time which would conflict with this game since link gets the master sword in this game

In particular, the Wii U is now more obviously an exploratory step towards the Switch and Nintendo's entry into the mobile game market makes the commentary on people using phones/tablets/etc. for gaming very interesting. I think the takeaway is that they do actually know what they're doing even if it doesn't really look like it sometimes.

When someone says something bad about Nintendo, and how to fix it, the Nintendo fan will yell "WELL, THE XBONE IS WORSE BECAUSE OF THIS (insert reason). I'm not singling out Nintendo fans, this happens vice versa also. The first person never even mentioned the Xbox One, so why was it brought up by the second one? Because the second guy didn't care about how bad his favorite console is, he only cares about how it is better than the competing one. I just want to see constructive criticism about a console without bringing the other ones into the discussion.

Stanley Kubrick is noted for creating very controversial films that push the envelope. Even in the era of antiheroes, where we can learn to love a meth dealer via Breaking Bad, we are still slightly uneasy about Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, which idolizes a serial killing rapist. The audience was forced to sympathize with a character that would always be hated in modern society. The joke is really only for people who also have a good knowledge of film and film history, which I've taken several classes in. I just like how Yahtzee can appeal to such a huge audience in such creative ways. It was unexpected because he tends to stay on the side of video game media.

I wish Nintendo would would go back to the game cube format and just have a fun console with little gimmicks. Hell even the gimmicks back in the day were nice like being able to play you hand held game on you tv through an attachment to the console or controller. They should also bring back some lesser know classics like Star Wars Rouge squadron. Imagine the things you could do with the core of the old game and the abilities of new hardware. I am just glad they do there own thing and avoid the console wars.

I can think of one reason, besides sales, that third-party isn't interested in the Wii U: it uses proprietary discs made by Nintendo instead of say, Blu-ray.
@TheAnimator1808
@TheAnimator1808 10 жыл бұрын
Yes they are proprietary, but they hold exactly the same amount of data as a Blu-ray disc, they're virtually identical, it's the same with Ps4 and Xbone, they are both Blu-Ray discs, but why do you think you can't play a ps4 game on an xbone or vice versa?
@SirBlackReeds

Having recently played on a switch it's like Nintendo watched this and took notes. Switch feels like what an old console used to be with a few clever tricks up it's sleeve. Solid games, Portable, fun and easy to play with friends. Use it's own screen or any you have to hand. Hell even the controller splits into bits so you can immediately split screen. Deffo a big step in the right direction.

As much as people say they want innovation, they're all lying. Everyone wants the SAME copy paste crap over and over again; why else do Call of Duty and Madden Football increase in sales every year? Also, Link Between Worlds wasn't bad, fuck you Yahtzee, blah blah blah, we all love you.

I saw that video. While I agree with Game Theory, you dumbed it down too much. You see it everywhere, gamers DO want innovation. The thing is, COD is fucking *fun.* It really is fun. So people buy it. That doesn't mean we don't want new and exciting things, that just means that certain games perfected/greatly improved certain formulas.
@Darkington
@Darkington 10 жыл бұрын
I don't understand, you opened with how I dumbed down GameTheory and then say Call of Duty is fun and make no supporting argument... sorry if I missed something, I wouldn't call myself greatly intelligent,but I don't see your point. But if what your saying is that games can be improved without much innovation, Call of Duty Ghosts took away some of the better ideas of Black Ops II multiplayer and made the plot make less sense and made no attempt to innovate. And if you call that a bad example, Modern Warfare 3 took away some better ideas from Black Ops. I guess my point is Infinity Ward is a bunch of whores and I think I've gone off topic... oh well I'm not smart enough to respond effectively and I apologize for this spam you will receive.
@snickerdoodle7877
@snickerdoodle7877 10 жыл бұрын
Darkington Brethren You dumbed it down in the sense that you said, "gamers are liars, they don't want innovation". It's not actually that clear cut. I mean, biologically speaking, violence is pleasurable. It triggers a dopamine release in the brain, just like orgasms, crack, laughing, and social media (nope, not kidding). And you gotta give the devil his due, COD's got a great control scheme. It's fast-paced, fun, and the gameplay is just *good.* I mean, it really is. So, why change it? Why innovate COD? Innovation can be had elsewhere; while COD does need new things, major change isn't really a big deal. Most people play SP once then go to multiplayer, so gameplay is the most important aspect, and changing core gameplay is a mistake. What I'm saying is something I haven't seen a lot. I'm saying that if it's not broke don't fix it; instead, build something else, brand new. Leave COD alone, it's fine the way it is. Innovate something that isn't already really good.
@Darkington
@Darkington 10 жыл бұрын
If Call of Duty is fine the way it is, then why keep buying it? Look at Valve and Team Fortress 2; Team Fortress 2 was a great improvement upon its predecessor and since 2007 Valve has been improving the game without making another game because they know they may never have to make another Team Fortress because they improve what is already there without rebranding it and charging people $60 for it. Additionally, the multiplayer in Call of Duty was made worse in almost every way when it comes to MW3 and Ghosts by forcing players to adapt to the older less interesting format after using a highly competent new system that improved on several things shown in the Black Ops games because Infinity Ward clearly wants nothing more than your money.
@snickerdoodle7877
@snickerdoodle7877 10 жыл бұрын
Darkington Brethren If COD is fine the way it is, why NOT buy it? It's good. It may have only very rare self-improvement, but it's shooty and fun. And it works. Yeah, they're obviously after my money, so's every company ever. That's what companies do; they sell people shit. My point is, innovation is good. New stuff is good. But just because something is stagnating doesn't mean it isn't fun.

Simplicity is a much underrated thing in gaming and the WiiU's small catalogue of games does that exceedingly well... Picking up, Pokken, or Hyrule Warriors or Bayonetta, or Mario Kart (regardless of their shortcomings) is a simple experience that's well suited to casual short bursts of your gaming fix. Compare that to the seemingly endless epics that grace other consoles that are desperately trying to be the next massive PC RPG and really who can be bothered to plough hours and hours of your life into a game your likely to get bored of before you get close to finishing. I mean take Skyrim for instance... it's main quest was dull as dishwater and the 10,000 or so sidequests where predominantly lather rinse repeat fetch quests that required you to spend ages playing QTE minigames to build up armour and weapons in prep for.

This is why I like Yahtzee. Unlike other reviewers, he makes it clear about how recent nintendo sequels have been doing nothing new and are just retreading old stuff with some nooks and crannies to give the illusion that it is new. Like people are praising Nintendo for "going back to basics" with Link Between Worlds, when really they're making the game in a format that's easier to program than 3D games. Also I don't get that fact, Zelda games worked fine as 3D games and reached their peak with Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and arguably Twilight Princess. It's just a lot of people forgive Nintendo for this because they're primarily the only game company making games for the sake of making games: Fun. And while that's commendable in this day and age, Nintendo has been doing a lot of shady shit that I just can't ignore and will never forgive.

Hell! They except it with a lazy wave of the hand saying "Who cares, people will still buy this shit no matter how fucking bland it is". The best way to fight it off is just not talking about it. I always loved the local mutliplayer part about consoles, especially on the Wii. I myself own a PC, so a LAN Party is the closest I can go to local multiplayer, it is extremely rare that there is any game with a local mutliplayer that requires only one computer. Why? My CPU can handle 4 instances of Left 4 Dead without sweating, Id just need to plug in 4 mouses, keyboards and screens and 4 people would be happy. But even if three of these people would complain about the control layout, and that they dont know the map, or that the game is unfair to them for some reason, or its just because im better because I had 100+ hours at the game, know the controls and the map and figured out how I can be unfair to the game. But whenever I visit friends that own a Wii we always have something to play, especially something that I can do reasonably well even if I havent even heard of the game. You dont need much extra hardware except for the controller, most games have straightforward controls, especially stuff like Wii Sports, and they are genuine short term FUN. There is pretty little to hold against it actually, because it excels at what its designed to do, but it threw away the stuff it doesnt need for its purpose, but thats just the stuff everybody wants to have for some absurd reason. Like you give someone a hand warmer, and they expect it to cook food.

While I too think the kinect isn't a good idea for gaming (and against consoles in general), I must say that the research for the Kinect didn't entirely go to waste. It's currently used for robotics and computer vision applications. This was possible in the past, but would set you thousands of dollars back with not very functional hardware. The kinect being as mass produced as it is, and with it's popularity, it became an extremely cheap way to perform advanced computer vision, with many community-made algorithms out there too.

Fantastic video, but I have one major gripe. Local multiplayer on PC is extremely easy. Effortless in fact. You just need one long HDMI cable to your living room TV (or have your main monitor in a position that easily facilitates local multiplayer, as I do) and you're good to go. I have a Chinese knockoff USB thingy that I found on ebay for £4.50 that allows multiple wireless XBOX controllers to sync to the PC, and it works like a charm. I've been playing everything from Gang Beasts to Bomberman on a gamecube emulator to spelunky to FIFA with my flatmates... local multiplayer on the PC has never been better.

Got to say i kind of agree with all this. Oddly enough. Well i mean with the WiiU being a dedicated gaming platform and people actually not caring that much for it. I think it's more along the lines of too much marios and zeldas on there. 3DS suffers from the same, i mean sure there are few interesting titles but a lot of the others are really grindy cartographers RPGs or just plain N games. They even SNES mario game on their store.... Comon N, please give us a new franchise? What happened to all the creativity you had stored? How come every game you come out with feels like a rebranding of a previous game? I mean, Ocarina of time 3D? Really? Windwaker HD? Really? Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D? Really? ***** Not really. While nintendo does repeat many gameplay formulas and elements, especially with mario, most of their games have enough innovation to make it a different game. Take zelda for example. Wind waker and twilight princess are two completely different games. They work off the same concept but play entirely differently. Or you could look to pokemon which has very repetitive and re used gameplay, but always adds new things and keeps it fresh. Obviously you aren't a fan of nintendo and thats ok but claiming that it's just the same game over and over again isn't really true with a lot of their content.
