I think the actual horror and tragedy in the film is that Grace was trying to redeem herself and be a good person as she moved away from her past (her medication and her dog Grady helped) but the kids blamed Grace for their parents separation and their mother's suicide. Vengeance led to suffering, in many ways the characters fell into their own hell.
@matttkofficial4 жыл бұрын
EonBlueReviews for me I get that and liked the premise, but completely missed on execution. I was given no reason to like her, you know nothing really humanizing about her except she was from a cult. There was also nothing convincing me that a man with an otherwise perfect marriage would leave for someone like that without establishing how they fell for each other. In the end I rooted for no one so it felt inconsequential and lacking in suspense or payoff. That’s just me though.

The film is actually good. The ending Joe was expecting is implicit: a close in the remaining 2 bullets on barrel, one for each kid. For a moment I thought the woman was fucking around the kids, specially when the little girl asks her brother "have you seen her pills?" when in the basement. That made the ending even more terrifying. Anyways, i really like Joe's games reviews but for movies i choose Chris Stuckman and other reviewers instead.

The worst well made movie in a while. Utterly unbelievable. Here is a numbered list of how the coincidences add up and how unbelievable the story becomes. Ready? 1. Kids have a mom that commits suicide - it happens sometimes, so far, so good with plot 2. Six months later, dad takes kids to hang with mom's replacement - a little insensitive considering it's a holiday but, okay 3. The new mom also experienced suicide - mass suicide of others around her - when she was young - huge stretch, story's plausibility has dropped big time here 4. Kids coincidentally stumble on all details of what happened to new mom - already lost me, way too many coincidences, probability is in decimal range now 5. Kids want to harm new mom, possibly get her to commit suicide with no regard for the danger that could create for them - yeah, okay... 0.0001% chance probability? 6. Kids understand sophisticated psychology needed to trigger past trauma - mmm-hmm... Must have take psychology class in junior high... 7. Kids rip perfect audio sample from dad's computer and loop it expertly to play over a bluetooth speaker indefinitely, and it never needs recharging - LOL 8. One kid has professional climbing gear - possible but given other coincidences, not buying it 9. Dad coincidentally has to leave, giving kids perfect setup to commit evil intentions - and kids don't feel guilty or break down until way too late 10. New mom starts going crazy and coincidentally has dreams and visions that perfectly sync with the kids plan and her past trauma - 0.000000000000001% probability 11. Kid has professional Photoshop skills and prints of (and frames) newspaper articles of their death - please, lol 12. Kids still have no remorse and tell new mom they all already died (all the while freezing from the cold cabin and never breaking character) 13. Dad who is well-versed on past trauma, left new mom with his kids and gives her a loaded gun on the way out - how are we doing on believability so far? Yeah... 14. One kid is able to fake a hanging over a staircase without injury and without his climbing gear being visible to new mom 15. New mom shoots man in chest who doesn't fight and instantly dies - someone doesn't understand how guns work... 16. New mom, now perfectly synced with past trauma, kills the kids - in itself believable, but not in this story, based on how they got there So why are so many people thinking this is a good movie...? It looks nice. The acting and scoring are nice and the directors are popular. Maybe social media has made people lose their critical thinking skills? I don't know. Good writing should never pull you out of the story by straining your ability to suspend disbelief. Stories need to be PLAUSIBLE, based on the world they take place in. Fantastic stories with dragons and magick, vampires and ghosts, etc, can all be plausible or implausible based on the world they exist in, as defined by the story. Once they break that, the story is lost.

Clous von ok lets go through your points. You don’t need an explanation WHY he left the mum for her. It’s no a necessity to know unless you want literally everything explained to you. It happens everyday in the world so I wouldn’t consider that plot point “stupid”. For the point about them tricking her. Ok, as I said in my original comment I did find them pulling that off slightly unbelievable I’ll agree with you on that, that I’m not sure two kids that age would be fully aware of the effects hiding her medication would have. The dog point you made I didn’t find a big deal particularly but I’ll give you that if it bothered you. The dad could have got the gun quicker from her but I didn’t find it hilarious, more that he had too much faith in her and not fully aware of the situation with her medication etc. As for your final point on them getting stuck in the snow from what I remember didn’t they try and turn the car around and subsequently get stuck? But even if that wasn’t the case I’m presuming he wasn’t really able to drive so the idea that he might of lost control in the snow or not followed the tracks previously made not that unbelievable. So yes I did watch the film and there’s no need for the unnecessary little comment just because you don’t agree with everything I said. It’s ok to have a different point of view and I actually enjoy hearing different thoughts.

@@VaunShiz Never seen someone make so many dumb, easily disproven points. Quarantine got me all hyped about meaningless shit so let's get into this peer review: 1) "Dad leaves mom with no explanation for cult girl." Dad is an author who was writing about the cult, interviewed the daughter and fell in love. Not implausible. 2) "Mom kills herself [over her soon-to-be ex-husband, whom she still loves, is in love with someone else]... literally makes no sense." Relationships are responsible for 40% of all suicides. Literally makes all the sense. 3) "Right after all this he wants to move this girl in." It's a relationship, people tend to move in together if they're in love. 4) "Not only that he leaves [her with] these kids that hate her." Got a business call, HAD to. Wasn't something he planned on." 5) "Even worse he gives this girl with mental issues a gun" her anti-psychotic medication was treating her symptoms entirely. Her mental issues only presented themselves once she stopped taking her meds, so not unreasonable to assume that the father had never seen the girl act anything but 100% sane. House is in the middle of wilderness, guns are required, trust me. Lived in the mountains west of Boulder, CO for a year, mf-ing mountain lions, turns out, big fans of mountains... not so much of not eating from my trash cans and scaring thee fuuuck out of me at 3am. Unrelated lol but seriously fuck mountains lions. Sketchy shit heads can't even decide if they want to be called mountain lions, cougars, panthers or pumas... PUMAS. Been needing to vent about this for a while, apparently. Fuck you, pumas 6) "Then these kids decide to trick a mentally ill girl with what looks like PTSD" Her psychosis doesn't present itself until AFTER they decide to fuck with her and she isn't on her meds, not before... they didn't know she was THAT unstable. 7) "They convince her she's dead and needs to repent" Repentance was the crux of her father's cult. Makes sense that you would mess with someone like that with the most significant aspect of their past trauma 8) "They 'accidentally' kill her dog... that was lucky to make her go crazy." Kids were busy schemin', forgot about the dog. Not totally unreasonable 9) "Dad did the worst job ever getting the gun from her" Dad was trying to de-escalate and convince her that she was having a psychotic episode. Attacking someone to get the gun away from them, especially around kids, can be very dangerous. I'll meet you half way though the dad could have grabbed the gun when it was literally pressed against his head. Little dumb. Could have been in shock, but still, just fuckin grab the gun... 10) "The car getting stuck in snow after we watch him follow a snow plow to get there" We see a snow plow going down A road, not established that there is only one house on that road. Plow could have just been doing the main part, as we don't see the plow when dad arrives home and gets out of car In conclusion, you and pumas are dumb. Repent. God bless

This is misleading. This wasn’t a person “he just met” - this is someone that was about to be their mother, as his intent - which was known by the audience - was to marry her in the near future. She hadn’t had a chance to bond with the kids yet though, and they had suffered a tragedy within the past year - so this was an attempt to find “common ground” between them all. The scenario is perfectly acceptable.
@guitarfreak80ftw4 жыл бұрын
While this seems like fair criticism, the film didn’t have a mother leaving her kids with a strange, new boyfriend for a day or two while she got a bit more work done and returned. That may seem like splitting hairs, but it’s less comparable when a father is leaving his kids with a new girlfriend. Also, sometimes fathers do dumb things. My dad has forgotten me at baseball practice as a kid. He once left me alone at the mall because I took too long in a store.

The only thing I can say is that someone that does experience a psychotic break from reality & experiences auditory hallucinations actually would believe the sound is coming from their head as opposed to a externally placed speaker in another room. Uh? Animals dont have such self awereness to even understand the concept of death. Outside of genetic imprint for self preservation, animals dont understand such a concept to "want" not to die. At most they understand the absence not death. Stop projecting humanity, empathy and morality into animals. I hate hypocrites like that would gladly watch and enjoy a person's death, which actually doesnt want to die and understands the concept of death and has empathy (unless mentally ill affected by psychopathy), while feel sorry for an animal that would actually kill as many people and animals as possible if given the chance. Go and tell a bear you dont wanna die. He will kill you even if it has all the fish to eat a few feet away. I hate how people like you, those fucking hypocritical "animal lovers", make angry. I love animals. I saved so many birds, reptiles and mice from my cat bringing them home to me as a gift, nursing them back, holding a little bird in my hands for 2 hours to keep it warm as it was shivering and couldnt fly after the trauma of almost being mauled to death, until it felt better and flew away. I chased a little baby mice for 30 minutes at 2 am with a flashlight in my mouth, trying to catch it hiding and running around under the bed, caught it and nursed it back to health. I LOVE animals. Ive had 2 rabbits, 2 little turtles, 4 cats (2 exotic cats and 2 european cats) and 5 dogs (1 rottweiler, 3 german shepherds and 1 pug) in my life, living with animals my whole life. They died of old age.1 exotic just died at 15 years of age due to renal problems. Im living with 2 cats and 1 dog right now. My other exotic son ive had for the past 15 years has the same renal problems (50% chance for exotic cats to have them, its a gentic disease) and is gonna die soon as well.. they are like my children, sleeping on my head or my chest.

@@kato093 Exactly the kind of person I'm referring to. You have some research to do - there's plenty of genuine scientific research into animal intelligence, emotions and awareness (not to mention the myriad video footage all over the internet) - with findings ranging from pigs solving puzzles faster than 3-4 year old humans and crows manipulating water displacement to their advantage, to chickens showing signs of empathy and various species expressing sadness at the loss of others they were attached to. Things are not so black & white as you THINK you know. Further, I was not projecting anything. Self-preservation does not require humanity, empathy, nor morality, and I made no suggestion of any of them - even though there is plenty of evidence to support each of those traits in various other species in various ways, if you only take the time to look and stop allowing your pessimism to automatically override every thought that enters your head. Next, there are plenty of humans that will kill you too even if you tell them you don't want to die, and I can pretty much guarantee you it'll be for less palatable reasons than any bear would have. On top of that, assuming every bear would attempt to kill you 100% of the time for no good reason is just plain ignorant. And no, I am not suggesting that means they are safe to approach. Finally, you can take that ridiculous assumption about gladly watching and enjoying humans die right back - you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

@xShaade4 жыл бұрын
@@delicouscake917 We're talking about eating animals now? Ok. Human consumption of animals plays very little role in the natural order of this world - because the vast majority of animals that humans eat are farmed, not plucked from the wild. In fact it's believed that most farmed animals would die out completely if it weren't for the forced breeding inflicted by humans. Others would slot back into their natural roles and breed at their natural rates - not the vastly accelerated rates employed by humans. Humanity artificially inserted itself into that specific role in the food chain and it is more than capable of removing itself again, especially with all the technology and knowledge we have today. The Earth and it's abundant animal life were doing just fine for a long, long time before we ever appeared - and will continue to do so long after we are gone, short of us literally blowing the planet apart in our ceaseless pursuit of destruction.

It really isn’t. It depends entirely on what you like about film. It is not full of creepy imagery or jump scares, but it is a very good psychological horror film - along the same vein as “it comes at night” was - where you don’t really know where things are heading, and there’s not necessarily a feeling of “fulfillment” when it’s over. It is a complete downer of a film, and it also takes place between three actors (for the most part) locked together in a small snowed-in cabin. Angry Joe and the others completely missed the mark on how they spoke about this film, and every other movie critic on KZbin is saying the exact opposite of them for a reason. It is a film with layers, and for people like AJ, usually a film isn’t good unless it leaves them feeling happy at the end; this intentionally does not cater to that emotional need, and this review is going to be extremely regrettable as more time goes by - as it is a clear testament to their inability to recognize powerful writing, and does nothing but highlight the fact that these three cannot be taken seriously as critics, and have no idea what they’re talking about. They may say “edgy” things in their videos that make people giggle, but they missed the mark here, and it’s tragic. Try to form your own opinion, and take their movie reviews with a pinch of salt when you watch them. Otherwise you may miss out on a number of great films that they don’t like, but are completely wrong about.

Now I’m not saying you’d like the film - based on our interaction so far I’m actually certain you’d hate it for no other reason than because AJ told you to - but the critiques he provides about films are surface-level opinions like “I didn’t like it because it was stupid and bad”, and offer no real insight into anything that can be considered analytical objective criticism about the structure or the actual problems with the films he’s reviewing. It’s sad to know so many people will miss out on great films - simply because three clowns get together every other day to capitalize on the following of this channel, and shell out half-assed thoughtless reviews on movies that other - much more credible reviewers - are calling praise-worthy. It’s just food-for-thought. If his thoughts are enough for you, then by all means carry on, but he’s not right about this one.

I hated this a lot more than Midsommar, at least that had some great visuals and overall felt like a full experience. This movie just felt like a holy shit.

Yea, I saw this at Overlook Film Festival, and I actually thought it was good. I'm guessing this movie just wasn't for these guys.

It’s the plot holes and characterization that broke the film for them. I ADORED the cinematography, but I can’t ignore the story’s problems. SPOILERS FOR THIS MOVIE BELOW The dad leaving them with a former cultist that he researched himself (and only knew for less than a year), the kids leaving the gun with the former cultist (who even THEY didn’t trust), the kids seemingly letting the dog freeze to death, and the former cultist somehow walking back to the lodge in a giant circle.

@@IMMACYCLOPS 1)he definitely knew her for more than a year, when the mother killed herself he wanted to marry her (which means he must have knew her for some time) and then 6 months passed, 2)leaving the gun was definitely stupid, 3) the dog scape and they look for him but couldn't find him
