I don't mind flying that long in an E-175 because of its 2-2 seating configuration. I can't imagine doing that on a 737, particularly the middle seat.

I think there's more room and a more comfortable cabin on a E-175 than just about any other single-aisle plane. It's almost unfair to call it an RJ, it's so good. But the lack of chargers on this long a flight is a bit of a bummer.

I've flown roundtrip into Bozeman twice--once to work installing a hospitality system in Big Sky Montana and once to do the same in West Yellowstone. On the second roundtrip, on a 737, when they started our aircraft's engine we heard a flash, bang and smelled the stench of kerosene but no smoke entered the cabin. The captain calmly told us to collect our carry-ons, go to the gate agent, and rebook our flights telling us we heard a rare event, loss of an engine on the ground (the best place to lose one). Seated at the rear of the aircraft, I knew if I went to the gate agent there was no way I'd get a seat on the incoming regional jet, so I hustled to a pay phone (remember those) and rebooked my flight from there to SLC where I'd connect to a flight to Phoenix. I tell frequent fliers if you are deplaned for any reason or learn at the gate your flight is cancelled, call the airline or go to the customer service desk before anyone else gets the same idea, and you will likely make it on the next flight out. I also advise not to book the last flight out for the same reason. I've always wanted to fly the Embraer because its window seats have high windows for good views and you only have an adjacent aisle seat if you need to stretch your legs--important on such a long flight like yours. Also it is always good to buy a portable usb charger/power provider for jets with no usb or electronic outlets. Business travel, with an average of one flight weekly, was my way of life for eighteen years, not to mention yearly vacations and many trips outside the US. Including the perks of frequent flying, you learn to cope peacefully with delays and in my case, a few near fatal incidents but nothing panic worthy except for my first trip to Europe, at age 15, where we were forced to go thru intense thunderstorms on our way into JFK roughly on descent, and the same set of storms on the way out, making our flight the last one out of JFK according to our captain of the connecting flight--they closed the airport when they saw our DC8-63 taking off just before the far threshold. But my other four incidents, excluding what happened in Bozeman, including a ground equipment collision in Jackson Hole, did not cause me alarm except for one flight into northern Michigan where fog moved in, covering our alternate airports and forcing three approaches at increasingly lower altitudes since our pilot could not see the approach lights. How dangerous was it--one dead heading pilot kissed the ground when we landed. But oddly I was not scared, knowing our pilots knew what they were doing and they kept us informed during the go-arounds. Flying is indeed incredibly safe and more so with each passing year. The only thing to avoid are short connections and connections in general if one can get a non-stop like your flight, and if connecting, exiting the security zone since one never knows what the lines may be like on the opposite side of security, especially at international (foreign) hubs.

Very well put together comment. Wow the old DC8s must have been shaking in the thunderstorm. I used toTravel a couple of times a year YYZ to HNL. Depending if I had to change planes in YVR it used to be a stretch 8. It sometimes was a rough ride out over the Pacific. I was never frightened as I was happiest on an aircraft than anywhere else 😀✈️🌏
@JohnCillis4 ай бұрын
@@ruthbickerstaffe1915 The flight that day into JFK was a United DC-10 which actually shook more than the Transinternational (a charter airline with very pretty colors owned by TransAmerica). The DC8-63 had an unusual feature--it could reverse two of its engines in flight to slow down, then it would shake and over the clouds landing in Milan, it seemed like we suddenly were standing still in flight and pushed forward in our seats. The captain warned our charter--filled with more than two hundred high school students and some chaperones, about the experience. My only roundtrip to Hawaii was on a Hawaiian 767, with my wife and our daughter, non-stop to and from Honolulu from Phoenix in '12. I loved the airline and its service being one of the longest non-stops out of Phoenix except for our four European flights. We stayed at the great Hilton Hawaiian Village and on my daughter's 13th birthday we gave her the sub ride which descends to just shy of 100 feet. The water is clear and they take their passengers to an artificial reef. I did see more fish snorkeling off of Guam though in '92 and also in a swim thru reef pool which even had small sharks. The real reef I snorkeled over had these yellow fish which gently 'kissed' my body while swimming. It was an unreal experience which reminded me that we all came from the sea, which is why I believe we are attracted to places like it--especially after a spell in Big Sky country near Bozeman on a cold winter day like I had when I was teaching at Big Sky resort, lol.

Actually - since this amazing thing called the Internet was invented, you do better to pull out your phone and use the airline’s mobile app instead of calling the airline, especially on UA. There is nothing you cannot do for yourself with the UA app that you can do by talking to an agent in-person or on the phone - they all use the same system. I can get a hotel voucher on the mobile app, be rebooked into a different city or switch to a different star alliance carrier, all on the UA app. Agents will not know which alternate cities exist but the app does

@@cxa340 True of today. When I went thru the Bozeman experience, airline apps and cell phones with today's features were not available. We had big, bulky mobile phones with no Internet access. Until I retired, after I got out of systems instruction, I was a client/server and web app designer, probably the biggest site I helped test and design was Best Western's web portal which though rolled out in '05 is still the same look and feel today which is quite amazing, since web portals usually do thru redesigns on a much faster pace. When it came to Best Western's, long after I left them in '07, I guess those who helped manage their website after I left subscribed to the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' policy. The airline I flew in Bozeman was Delta and I flew them during the time when Delta was noted for having many challenges. As a business traveler, Delta was our preferred airline out of Phoenix although I could choose another airline, most often United or Southwest, if the routing was better especially if the flight was non-stop or had a better layover since I preferred two hours or more (three hours if going thru DFW which had the longest walks and more frequent weather delays). I did not like not making it to a client when I promised or not making it home to my wife and daughter when expected. My wife was quite worried when I was delayed at Bozeman because I could not reach her that evening, but I always made it home the day she expected me because of my rule never to book the last flight out. Your advice should be heeded--the cell phone is our friend, lol.

@@Kuzo32 yeah, the “stretched” 800/900/ER variants are quite hungry for the runway. The limited rotation angle and lesser engine diameter from the low ground clearance hinders performance.
