@@thiagoguimaraes669 Gandalf the White is maximum, Aragorn is in excess of 50 and legolas somewhere similar..Gimli is just a tough bugger. Gandalf the White was not the same as Saruman the White, Gandalf got his power from Eru in the void when he died as the grey, Saruman got his from the angels. The truth of Gandalf the White is that the only people to even try to attack were the 3 walking with him there. At no point did an enemy move to attack him, infact, even shadows would not fall on him if he chose. The battle weary or defeated Gandalf was to fit in with modern cinema in that no person can have the type of power Gandalf the White had. The audience cannot accept a being would be untouchable and not use that might. The films were good but got Gandalf horribly wrong, when he rode out to save the Gondor soldiers, white fire lept from his palm, not a light from his staff, the Nazgul fled.

But would you part an old man from his support? Come, will you not let us enter?' 'The staff in the hand of a wizard may be more than a prop for age' said Háma. He looked hard at the ash-staff on which Gandalf leaned. 'Yet in doubt a man of worth will trust to his own wisdom. I believe you are friends and folk worthy of honour, who have no evil purpose. You may go in.' That's from the book, but it is also portrayed well by the actor playing Hama. He isn't fooled at all that Gandalf would need his staff to walk, but he trusts Gandalf more than Wormtongue. He let's him in because he knows Gandalf is the only possible way to break the spell on his king. In other words, "I told you to take the wizards staff" "Yeah, you did, but go fuck yourself"
@TallisKeeton
@TallisKeeton 4 жыл бұрын
@@0knox So this was Hama the Doorwarden of Meduseld who knew that the wizards staff can be something more than a staff and yet he trusted them as guests of honor. This was Hama who died a bit later during the travel to Helms Deep in a skirmish with wargs scouts and whose son Haleth was discussing hopelesness and hope with the ranger Aragorn - who was named "Estel" - "Hope" - during their nightly waiting on the walls of Helms Deep before the attack of Urucs. Haleth son of Hama was given "a good sword" and a bit of hope mere hours after he lost his own father, by none other but the returned king whose name was Hope :) Yes, I think that we can see in the acting of the Hama's actor that he knew about wizards staff and made his own decision. :) And also we can see the big difference between movies-Rohan and movies-Gondor - in Rohan every warrior has his own decission, even after he sworn his oath "to lord and land" but in Gondor every move of a guard is told him by the steward - no guard would even move against the orders of the steward - even if the orders are "burn my son alive" or " bring wood and oil", or "abandon the walls and flee". I love the way in which the subtle book differences between these two cultures were not actualy skipped or omitted for shortness but included - though of course in more sharpened and flattened way in the movies :) Gondor is more civilised, stoic, bysanthinic, Rohan is more barbaric, heroic, germanic. That is why I love these film - you can see the aspects of the book in the movies and you can see the aspects of the movies in the books - they are not opposing but mirroring each other.

This scene has some of the best writing in the entire trilogy. “The courtesy of your halls has somewhat lessened of late, Theoden king.” “Late is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear. Lathspell I name him. Ill news is an ill guest.” “Be silent and keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm.” “Too long have you sat in the shadows.” “Harken to me!” “I will draw you Saruman, as poison is drawn from a wound” “You did not kill me, you will NOT kill him.” “Breathe the free air again, my friend.” “Dark have been my dreams of late.” “Your fingers would remember their old strength better if they grasped your sword.” Most of these lines were penned down by Tolkien himself. And the way these legendary actors deliver them is also brilliant. This scene has endless rewatchability for me.

At last the hobbits had their faces turned towards home. They were eager now to see the Shire again; but at fi rst they rode only slowly, for Frodo had been ill at ease. When they came to the Ford of Bruinen, he had halted, and seemed loth to ride into the stream; and they noted that for a while his eyes appeared not to see them or things about him. All that day he was silent. It was the sixth of October. ‘Are you in pain, Frodo?’ said Gandalf quietly as he rode by Frodo’s side. ‘Well, yes I am,’ said Frodo. ‘It is my shoulder. The wound aches, and the memory of darkness is heavy on me. It was a year ago today.’ ‘Alas! there are some wounds that cannot be wholly cured,’ said Gandalf. ‘I fear it may be so with mine,’ said Frodo. ‘There is no real going back. Though I may come to the Shire, it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same. I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Might be a little of both Gandalf having permission to use his full power (Iluvatar fully trusting he'll use it responsibly) and Saruman waning in power the more he falls to evil. The power of Middle-Earth's divine beings is huge but not infinite, and there's a running trend of the big bads weakening over time as they sustain unrecoverable injuries and spread their power outside of themselves as part of their plans. By the time Morgoth finally got the boot he was actually pretty vulnerable, between getting banged up in various fights over the centuries and transferring so much of his own power into strengthening his forces and corrupting the world itself --- compare that to the time before the Elves showed up, when he was so powerful he could just destroy whatever world the Valar tried to make, and they couldn't do much of anything about it until John Cena in god form tagged in. In a similar fashion, Sauron lost his ability to shapeshift (a big loss for a guy whose MO was deception and manipulation) when Numenor got destroyed and almost took him with it, and of course putting 99% of his power into magical artifacts he could control was a gamble that backfired big time. So for Saruman, it wouldn't surprise me if the effort of making his own super-Orc army to work/compete with Sauron was also taxing for the wizard, and Gandalf knew that. Saruman may have been the strongest when they first sailed to Middle-Earth, but in the attempt to realize his ambitions he's wearing himself out, to the point a revived and supercharged Gandalf now has the clear advantage.

This scene really cements Gandalf as having transformed into something 'greater', and probably somewhat closer to his true identity as an angelic spirit. His look of recognition that he is talking to Saruman at 2:05 isn't followed by one of fear or concern as it may have previously. Instead, without batting an eyelid, he literally throws off the mantle of his wise-but-kinda-doddery Grey persona, and demonstrates to everyone that from now on, he's in Business Mode.

@@leargamma4912 The film really upped the ante to make this scene rather more like a rematch battle between the wizards than Gandalf ‘healing’ Theoden. Its an unsubtle homage to The Exorcist and other demon possession films, but by repositioning Gandalf’s role as a liberator instead of a healer, Theoden is allowed to grow into himself more naturally over the rest of the films. So I definitely prefer this version more too.

If I remember correctly I read some where that the reason Gandalf came back stronger was Eru himself. He sent Gandalf back because he had "unfinished business" and the power up came from Eru basically giving him access to his full spectrum of powers. Gandalf and Sauraman are both Maia, the same as Sauron infact. Either one could have fought Sauron to a stalemate or possibly beat him sans The Ring but where more or less restricted by Eru

I’m not sure he would’ve, to be honest. @@andytheawesome7592 That's a weird take. Tolkien wasn't against technology, though he was certainly against consumerism and was pretty socialist, largely because he was opposed to extremes. He could be best described as someone who disliked "-isms". He was fascinated by technology, but he didn't hate it. He did think that life was better during the pre-industrial revolution era, and had a somewhat glamorized view of "years past", but he loved listening to radio. I think he would have enjoyed seeing his characters brought to life; The Lord of the Rings trilogy did a good job of staying mostly true to the source works. I do not, however, think he would have thought highly of The Hobbit trilogy.

This scene is so well directed - Even before we're introduced to Theoden, you see the setting of the village as you are entering it - the people all but out of hope, the soldiers feeling their souls entrapped to order, the air seems so dry and cold, even the grass is portrayed as grey and dead.. You can sense the evil before you even understand what is happening.. And the hall's lightin is so brilliant here.. the corners of the hall fully dark.. and the lighting on theoden from atop - the shadows in everyone's eyesacks beautifully poising the lack of hope.. In contrast, when the shot switches to Gandalf as he steps in, the lights seem to reflect and radiate off his silver beard/hair.. Showing he's bringing in hope into those halls. This is especially highlighted when he throws away his grey rags to reveal Gandalf the White.. Truly artistic..

No, the staff isn't special. But even in the book, those who don't know Gandalf is... well, GANDALF think that there is power in the staff. In this scene in the book, the door guards are specifically instructed to take the staff as well, though they don't.
@toonsis
@toonsis 7 жыл бұрын
will do a re-read, but Grima is just paranoid I cant find anything about the staff of an Istari being of any power in itself. It just serves as a symbol of their power and rank.
@katherinec2759
@katherinec2759 7 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to have power. They just have to think that it does. Looked it up: Hama the doorwarden is the first one to say something like it. "The staff in the hand of a wizard may be more than just a prop for old age." Then when they come in, Grima says, "Did I not counsel you, my lord, to forbid his staff?"
@katherinec2759
@katherinec2759 7 жыл бұрын
And I wouldn't say Grima's paranoid. I think Grima knows full well that what he's doing is wrong, and knows the consequences of it. And he knows that Gandalf has at least the persuasiveness, if not the power outright, to unmask him. That's why he's afraid, even without the staff, and why he says "he is not welcome here." He's trying to get Theoden to send Gandalf away before Gandalf has a chance to even say a word.

the bit where Theoden becomes less old is very well done, the book only says he smiled and someof the lines did not return. this is better.
@HDreamer
@HDreamer 7 жыл бұрын
It's more visual. The point in the books IIRC was more about him not really being as old and weak as Grima made him think he was. So in the book it was more that Gandalf changed Theoden's state of mind.

Imagine the feeling of the Háma at 4:31. The relief and pride of seeing his king normal again and handing the king his sword in the trying times, where he had to take orders from wormtongue, while people of their countries were being killed ruthlessly by orcs and loyal servants being banished.

At last the hobbits had their faces turned towards home. They were eager now to see the Shire again; but at first they rode only slowly, for Frodo had been ill at ease. Where shall I find rest?’ Gandalf did not answer.

The whole scene flows so well: when the riders ride in, the banner is forlorn and in blown into the mud with pale colours and, in the end, the warm colours fill the screen and Theoden's music is triumphant whilst Wormtongue and his cronies are cast down. It's a shame that no one has the nuance nowadays of showing the sense the triumph that goodness has over evil without it looking forced, mundane or even undeserved - every time I watch this scene, the hope soaring at the end for the people in Theoden when the king returns fills me with hope too.

You know, the movies serve different purposes. I've realized over time that I have no favorite, you know? If I'm in the mood for laying back, talking, feeling at home or hearing a good story, fellowship is good. If I'm feeling more adventurous or rough, feeling things out then I like the two towers. If I'm looking at things on a grand scale and really want to reach a goal or have excitement, then return of the king is my movie. It's a good trilogy because it really has a lot of versatility when it comes to encompassing different themes and entertaining side stories into the genre.

And Theoden's acting pretending to be thron in the chair at 2:18 is amazing because it conveyes how much force is Gandalf applying and it is all body acting. No need for special effects or lighting. Even the tiniest delay from when Gandalf applies the spell to when Theoden receives the hit conveys the magic projectile being thrown from Gandalf's Staff. Things like this is how great acting is conveyed, with that attention to detail. Other franchises would go for shiny colorful light but nit this trilogy. Magic is invisible and practical and acting and I love it.

Also Saruman being thrown from Theoden's body back into his tower in 2:52 is perfect. How the actors match the movement and expression closeup in the camera and wire work. Perfection. We followed Saruman flawlessly through a jump cut and it is brilliant.

You're right, actually, Wizards in Tolkien's literature are kind of "low level angels" (a sub-type of the maiar), sent by the Valar (the 15 Powers of the World, a superior class of angel (Ainur) created by Eru (the supreme God and creator of the Universe) to help him and make him company) to protect and guide the Sons of Eru (Men and Elves) away from the Dark Lord, and help them fighting against him.
