@@respectmysarcasm4133 I do not recognize the happy ending part. I have a translation of the first draft, which is actually the folk tales and not the children's fairy tales. The brothers Grimm had first set out to just record folk tales told by german speaking countries and provinces. All later edits and editions were because one of the brothers wanted to make them into child "friendly" fairy tales and cash in on the stories. The other brother saw himself more as a historian and refused to participate in the editing and tried to prevent new editions from happening. He failed. If I get close to the book again, I'll look up the tale of rapunzel. What I do remember of that story, is that is has been said to being told in different ways by different people and the grimm brothers decided on the clothes shrinking one.

Botanists to the fore: the rampion bellflower (Campanula rapunculus, in German: Rapunzelglockenblume) has edible roots. Brothers Grimm apparently still knew that in the early Middle Ages, these roots were a common dish and the flowers were therefore cultivated. In the picture book of my childhood, the eponymous plants in the witch's garden were lamb lettuce which in German sometimes is also called Rapunzel. It always bothered me that the woman craved for something so much that literally grows everywhere - with the knowledge that she didn't crave lamb lettuce but that culture plant, I am all the wiser. Thank you, Jon Solo
@Fledhyris2 жыл бұрын
Although Rapunzel (rampion) also grows pretty much everywhere, or at least was commonly cultivated back then, so I think the implication is just that the witch grew really good ones - of whatever it was! - and the greedy mother just wouldn't settle for anything less, but had to have her poor husband go steal from the neighbourhood witch.

A bit late - but for those interested - Rapunzel is the german name of the plant the mother was craving. So the witch named the baby after the craving her real mother had. Ask your mom what her pregnancy craving was and thank her for giving you a different name :D
@lindamazule228911 ай бұрын
And that is how I realised that Latvians translated the german version, with just changing the plants - in latvian edittion she was callled Salātlapiņa - Salad leaf, and the wich named the kid after the plant her mother was craving! I guess it has much to do with the german influenze on our country, but still.... And, another funny thing - in my childhood i read H.K.Anderson and brothers Grimm, and only afterwards I discovered the Disney movies based on them, and always wandered - why are they so tame in theese movies? 😅
@fuchsregen479411 ай бұрын
@@lindamazule2289 That is a quite accurate translation. Rapunzel is the "old fashioned" name for a specific salad. I do not think the younger generation even knows that, it has a different name now. In english its called corn salad. Imagine Disney would have called Rapunzel "Corn Salad" 🤣

Also at 14, she was already halfway through her lifespan. And child marriage was also common because it would prevent having sex and getting pregnant out of wedlock. So yeah there were valid reasons (I guess in those times) for why they did what they did.

Loved those books!! I also recommend Heartless which is her retelling of the Queen of Hearts story. It's so good!!
@lovetolovefairytales5 жыл бұрын
Actually, no. I think Donna Jo Napoli's retellings are the best, followed by Alex Flinn. Zel and Towering were both better written and more mythical in scope. Cress has some amazing creative touches but so much of the writing isn't on par with what it builds up. Reading Cress felt like reading an early draft of something rather than a polished novel. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed Cress and found it wildly creative it was just missing something. The number one Rapunzel retelling I've ever come across is called Bitter Greens. It's a brilliant take on how the original author (the French woman who wrote an earlier version of the tale called Persinette) might have first heard the story. Its the only version I've ever heard of giving a logical reason Rapunzel had such a beautiful singing voice and why it led the prince to her. Also if you fancy Christian fiction The Golden Braid is a pretty good Rapunzel story too.

I read the Lunar Chronicles, but never realized how much of Cress had easter eggs from the original Rapunzel fairytale, because I never knew it. Thank you for making this connection; my mind is blown!

It's weird..cuz..I knew most of these stories. I've known about this one in particular since i was really young, except for the pregnancy part. I think it was in one of my children's books years and years ago. I'm glad I found these videos of yours though. Its really interesting to hear about where these stories I grew up on originated.

You should look up the original “Into the Woods”. The movie is good, but the play is closer to the original stories and manages to intertwine many well known fairy tails.

Gustavothegoose ! I was gonna say the same thing. I think because Into the Woods is a conglomeration of fairy tales, using a variation of the plot of Rapunzel was purposeful.

Kathy Morgan yeah, early teen marriages were not uncommon in medieval and early reneissance Europe. It was the easiest way to keep horny teens from getting excommunicated or otherwise draconically punished by the church for "whoring" (which at the time meant intercourse and/or procreation out of wedlock) A child born out of wedlock also couldn't get baptized or take part of communion and could not be buried in consecrated soil and was thus barred from heaven in the afterlife according to church dogma. The key here is 'born' which leaves a 4-8 month window of opportunity to marry the two unfortunates and avoid a social disaster.

I thought that in one of the stories, the prince climbs to the top only to encounter the witch suddenly as she tells of Rapunzel’s fate in the desert. He gets frightened by the witch appearing in his face and looses his grip and then falls off the tower into the thorn bush.

I read the story of Rapunzel when I was a kid. When Tangled was coming out I wondered how they were going to change it, cause I figured there was no way they were going to have the prince's eyes gouged out. Have to say, I rather enjoyed what they did with it. Tangled is a really fun movie.

I’m really enjoying this series - I always enjoy seeing people’s reactions to the original stories/folklore. Would you ever consider discussing more than just one version of some of these tales? (e.g. there’s some more plot to the Basile version of this story that I enjoy).
