People don't understand how important it is to get ONCE into the system. Once you are in, you can search the house for other more easy vulnerabilities. If you aren't inside, its hard to find those. I think these first hacks are the most important step in all devices to permanently build an access point. On a personal note, I think companies should open up their hardware once end of life is archived. For example the WiiU is no longer profited from by Nintendo, there is literally no point in them not pushing a final firmware, that just opens the system with a "dev mode" that allows external software to be installed. The dream would be this would be mandatory, but its just a pipedream. Until then we need the hacking community to continue their important work.

Back when Cubic Ninja released, I remember it getting some attention because it was going to be one of the first (or the first?) 3DS games to not have a 3D mode. There was some outcry about releasing a game that didn't use the 3DS's main "feature" (or gimmick), but after they put 3D in with the Circle Pad mode, it seemed like the discourse around Cubic Ninja was over, and the game was going to fade into obscurity... _That_ didnt last long!

I don't agree with QR level sharing being bad at all, if the game can fit a level within the QR data then it's the best way to do it. Crashmo is a great example of why QR level sharing is better, if it was server based or physical wireless based then we wouldn't have all those Crashmo levels we have today. Back then people would be posting levels on websites, forums and such and all you needed to do was scan it.

7:10 It reminds be that back in the peak of 3ds hacking, there was a hacking conference in Germany if I recall, where Smealum and other people were invited to reveal new hacks about the console. At that time, there were a joke saying that Nintendo would send their Ninja to spy on them. A few years later, and it is related to this powerpoint, there were leaks revealing that Nintendo actually sent people in BELGIUM to spy on one of the hacking scene member (Neimod) in his own house. They even named it "Project Waffle".

To think, one little crappy puzzle game could cause such a big fuss which snowballed into the current 3DS hacking scene we've got today. Of course, Cubic Ninja wasn't the only game on the system to have an exploit, but it was one of the much easier to use and more noticable ones. Although at the time I didn't have any form of Wi-fi and so I wasn't aware of anything related to homebrew or hacking in general. But even then I didn't own Cubic Ninja when it came out, I'm not even sure if I ever heard about it. The game I got when I first got a 3DS was Sonic Generations because that was the only game that looked interesting when I first got my console. Of course nowadays I have a hacked 3DS of my own mainly because of all the cool homebrew apps, tools and games to play. And also being able to get now discontinued games is a nice plus, mostly because there are games that got discontinued way before the eShop shutdown that I really wanted as a kid.

Quick math lesson: when a game gets 51 out of a possible 100 it's average. It's not poorly rated, it's average. This number inflation thing really needs to be tossed across the industry.

what curious timing, you uploaded this just as nintendo released a new update that blocks most ways to install cfw on 3ds

This was the big start of 3ds homebrew. Things just expanded from there. Soundhax was big for a long time, and then when NTRBootHax was found it was all over. Of course while NTRBootHax can hack any 3ds model, it did have the issue of requiring a flashcart. And then we got seedminer.

When I jailbroke my 3DS, I still ultimately used a game. But it was Flipnote Studio, which you could get running for free by getting your security code and then replacing the Health and Safety app.

Huh, that's interesting. In the clip you show from Smealum, he's using the Japanese version of Cubic Ninja. And on the screen for QR code entry, there's a third option which in Japanese reads "StreetPass". That third menu option is missing from your (presumably USA) copy of Cubic Ninja. So the game had StreetPass support in Japan, but not the US? That's super weird.

I saw this in the bargain bin at walmart weeks before the hack. Went back when it was announced and if course it was gone. Was able to ebay a copy for around $50 iirc. Worth every penny at the time. I miss the bargain bin.

A bit related is the Vita 3.60 firmware version thing back in 2017 or when was it right before H-Encore showed up. Any Vita on firmware up to 3.60 was easily 3~6 times the price of a newer firmware version. I happened to get interested in the Vita again right around that time, and managed to find a cheap 3.67 firmware version one extra cheap, right before people figured out those were also hackable now.

As soon as I saw the cubic ninja box , I knew what this was gonna be about. Great video, man. By far one of the more interesting methods of hacking a console.

Seems unlikely. Nintendo aren't that stupid, they learn from their mistakes and make architectural changes with newer generations, just like say Microsoft (going from the 360 to the Xbox One architecture)

I almost bought Cubic Ninja the day the hacked game was made public, then decided not to go through with it. I had ordered it from an Amazon seller for around $8 all in, but canceled the order. I should have gone through with it, and just sold it a few days after getting it... My 3DSes are all hacked now, but it's stupid easy to hack them now.
