My favorite obscure cards that are secretly powerful are deglamor and unravel the aether. They are basically natrualizes that shuffles the target into the deck. It's a natualize that kills blightsteel, any Theros god, and darksteel plate. Also the hidden use of it is if someone plays a vampiric tutor or worldly tutor or any tutor that pits the card on top of the deck, you can force them to shuffle at instant speed.

Cosmotronic Wave: "3R: deals 1 damage to each creature your opponents control. Creatures your opponents control can't block this turn." A lot of people forget about that second ability. You can get a lot of combat damage in. It also has some combo potential. 0% of decks

I've ran this since it was printed in my most tuned deck (Licia Mardu Lifegain/Akido), where it's exactly the right sort of death sentence an aggro deck like that needs. It gets overlooked because it's an uncommon from a busy set that is also a sorcery and 4MV. Recently, I've swapped it out for an older card that's also rolling at 0%, Barrage of Boulders, which is 2R for the damage and ties the "can't block" to a Ferocious trigger, which should always proc when you actually want to use it.

Aetherize "3U: Return all attacking creatures to their owner's hand". It gets around, hexproof, shroud, indestructible and protection. It's instant speed so you can hold up other things as well. It can be used as a bargaining tool or even save your own creatures if combat becomes unfavourable in certain situations. It's also in about 5% of decks according to EDH rec.
@ich37302 жыл бұрын
aetherize didnt perform well for me. its useless as protection, as players will gang up on you and bouncing one guys board doesnt do anything. Normal bounce sweepers are just better
@macmusial36442 жыл бұрын
I feel like the majority of the time Aetherspouts is probably a better card, it costs one blue more but it puts the creatures in the top or bottom of their owner's library, which is a much better blowout since they don't have a chance to rebuild on the turn you bounce everything. It trades a bit of the flexibility Aetherize has for a lot of power to completely shut down an attacking player, which I think is generally better. It's also only played in about 2% of decks which is surprising that neither card is played much.

Submerge has actually been pretty popular in cEDH for a while, since yes it's likely that at least one opponent has a forest which makes it a free spell, but it's also a one card and free way to stop a thassa's oracle demonic consultation combo if the player using the thoracle has no other cards for blue devotion. After they exile their library but with the thoracle trigger still on the stack, you just put the thoracle on top of their library and then their devotion is zero, and now they have only thoracle left in their deck. Yes they could potentially draw and recast it next turn, but in cEDH a full turn cycle is more than enough to find an answer for that, especially when everyone knows it's coming.

Credit voucher is one of my favorite cards! It sees no play, but I actually run it in multiple decks. If you care about wheels but you don't want your opponents to get fresh cards and you can keep any cards you don't want to get rid of and you don't discard those cards either. It's my favorite wheel spell
@Stray72 жыл бұрын
Usually if I'm running a lot of wheels, I actively want stuff in my graveyard. If I want this sort of effect, I'll run Valakut's Awakening, which costs 1 less, doesn't need to be cast on my turn to have ready, replaces itself, and can be a land in a pinch if I need it. I mean, if this card works for you, it works for you (you can wheel in non-red decks with it), but it's not for me.
@monomanamaniac2 жыл бұрын
@@Stray7 I can see the argument, but I still think that credit voucher has its uses. Yes it does have to be on board, but in artifact decks that's actually a good thing. If you don't need to pay for it all at once then it actually costs less than awakening. The cards are shuffled in, so they're not locked at the bottom of the deck and you can pivot away from top deck locks from like scroll rack or brainstorm. I'm not saying it's the best, but it's in very few decks and I think it deserves a lot more love
@Stray72 жыл бұрын
@@monomanamaniac I'm not saying it doesn't have it's uses, just that I've weighed it before and it didn't fit the needs I wanted for a wheel. I can see the value in the shuffle and the fact it's an artifact, those are just synergies that the decks I have don't quite care for.

One underrated card that I recently quite took a liking to is Minion's Return... It is a 1BB aura that can enchant any creature with flash and "When enchanted creature dies, return that card to the battlefield under your control," and is played in 1% of decks according to EDHRec... At face value, it's just a 3 mana card that saves your best creature from a destroy effect, which can be quite expensive since holding 3 mana can be taxing for your game plan, and for a long time, I always just evaluated that card that way... However, when you read it carefully, because of the way it was worded (return that card to the battlefield under your control) and since you can enchant it on any creature, this means Minion's Return is a 3 mana steal effect... It is common for big threats on the field to be destroyed by either single-target removal or by board wipes, and so having the chance to get control of the best creature on the field when the rest of the table thought it has been dealt with is a wonderful feeling... There's an added benefit that since the triggered ability is the effect that causes you to take control of the creature, it's much harder for the owner of the creature to get it back to their side of the field, unlike regular Mind Control effects in blue where the aura needs to stick on the board... Of course, you can also play the card as a protection spell for your own creatures, and that's just fine regardless...

I love bioshift! Other great things about it, it can also just be used offensively too, not just to save counters. If you have anything out that interacts with counters being placed, like a doubling season, or a hardening scales or whatever, bioshift can make one creature with 10 counters into 2 creatures with 10 counters, or one creature with twice the amount of counters. Can also be helpful is say you were "forced" to build up the wrong creature with counters, once you get the right creature, you can just bioshift them over, and at instant speed too! So can even be used as combat tricks

I have two similar cards that do work in green stompy decks: Winds of Qal Sisma and Terrifying Presence. They are both 1G for a fog effect with a twist. Winds has a Ferocious clause where your creatures still deal damage. TP targets one creature to deal damage and the rest don't. Both can be used defensively if necessary, but their real power is by swinging and hoping blockers are declared in a way that theoretically favors them. The two combined are in roughly 3K decks on EDHRec. Compared with Fog's 12K, I think these cards deserve a little more love.

Insight has been my favorite piece of secret tech in EDH for a while now. Speaking from experience, it’s amazing. There have been games where it’s a dead draw, but if there’s even one green deck at the table, you’re drawing 3 cards off it minimum.
@Isheian2 жыл бұрын
I started running Insight after it got recommended by the EDHREC team, and I've only had one game where there was no green deck at the table. I've watched people not play green spells to prevent me from drawing cards and I've drawn tons in games. I can highly recommend it, and I can say the same for bolt bend. Wild growth is amazing as well...

On a similar note to suppres, I've been the target of a well timed "Mana Short" multiple times. The first time killed me and other casts have put me in last place at the point of the game from being ahead. Mana Short: 2U - Tap all lands target player controls and that player loses all unspent mana.

So it was a decent call to grab a Magistrate's Tower I gather, that's sure spiked a bit. I agree Wild Growth sees too little play for how good it is, it's a powerhouse of a card if you don't explicitly need the 1/1 dork, or if you've already got all the ones you can use in the deck. It's a tad salty, but Omen of Fire is a good card if your Red deck doesn't like being interacted with on the stack, as is Boil and Boiling Seas. You can probably run all 3 in a Red deck if your power level is pretty high (and everyone favours Blue). It's a lot less salty now vs non-mono decks, because they run so few lands that'll get hit, but if you play against someone who runs mono-Blue, they're going to be having a rough go if they cross you. A card I didn't see people using but I tried out and loved is Phyrexian Purge, can be much better than Fire Covenant, but it's a serious oldie. Great in a deck that likes to clear the board, but doesn't especially want to lose it's own stuff, or that might have a short-term ally you want to keep it's creatures. Lots of weird and technically playable stuff like this from the Weird Old Days.

Submerge. In my group/LGS, looks like I'm the only person who plays this card. They forgot it's 0 mana in instant speed. Compost is in my Sidisi deck.

My go to card. Sirocco. 1R - target player reveals their hand and takes 4 for each blue instant or discards them. Nice way to sneak a peek at the blue players hand haha

Submerge: Thanks to Mizzix of the Izmagus, it has been a staple for me since 2015. Bolt Bend: Another Misdirection for my Mizzix deck for a single red pip thanks to experience counters, and can even add another one if I only have two or three.

Psychogenic probe. 2 generic Artifact: Any time a spell or ability causes a player to shuffle their library psychogenic probe deals 2 damage to them. Love running this card

Invasion Plans from Stronghold is really cool. It is a red enchantment from 2 and a red. Card text: All creatures block each combat if able. The attacking player chooses how each creature blocks each combat

I’ll admit it might not be the best version of the effect, but I love Elixir of Immortality. It’s a great way to save your graveyard, or slow recursion, it includes itself, and it gains you 5 life! Chefs kiss

Though it costs more than Bioshift, Fate Transfer can steal your opponents' counters (and not just +1/+1 counters, if it's relevant). Exodus's Spike Cannibal has some nice potential too, albeit not as an Instant.
@reapersaurus2 жыл бұрын
Yep - them putting a spotlight on Bioshift, but not mentioning Fate Transfer is a big oversight. I would argue that for only one mana more, Fate Transfer is a far superior and flexible card.

Fun facts! Like Urborg, you can play Yavimaya in monoblue to give opponents Forests. Also, Bolt Bending a Dovin's Veto to target itself is hysterical. As for my own favorite underrated cards, Oath of Lieges and Bucknard's Everful Purse are my favorites!
@DontStopTheHustle2 жыл бұрын
Spells cant actually target themselves, but you get essentially the same thing by redirecting DV to the bolt bend
@ctomsky2 жыл бұрын
@@DontStopTheHustle Actually, they can! Just not as they're being cast. Targets are chosen as you cast a spell, so that spell hasn't become a legal spell on the stack yet in order to be targetable. But once its on the stack they ARE just another spell on the stack, so an effect that changes the target CAN change that target to itself as long as it's a legal target (ie Essence Scatter can't target itself but Counterspell or Dovin's Veto can!)
@DontStopTheHustle2 жыл бұрын
@@ctomsky This is incorrect. Spells are not a legal target for themselves. 113.4. A spell or ability on the stack is an illegal target for itself

A favorite of mine with 0% on edh rec is Thought Lash 😁 Cumulative upkeep : 1 If upkeep isn’t paid remove library from the game. Remove top card of your library: prevent the next 1 damage that would be dealt to you this turn.

For the people bashing this video about card price hikes, this is no different than all the other videos on the internet whenever a new set comes out, deck techs or all those pre-con upgrades, etc. This happens literally all the time lol welcome to the MTG economy 😂

@@Zookmottin What's the "MSRP shit"?
@flametitan1002 жыл бұрын
@@mikea.3686 MSRP is the expected price a product sells at. Since Ultimate Masters, WotC has declined to put out an official MSRP on its MTG products (though obviously major retailers have an MSRP of some kind), so we have to guesstimate based on market trends, rather than say, "They're ripping you off."

Instead of Galazeih Prismari (29:45), if you just want his static ability, I prefer Inspiring Statuary, because it also works with creature and enchantment spells.

Sakura-Tribe Scout I think is underrated and not really used to it's full potential. With it you can cause landfall effects on your opponents turns. I personally use it in my decks along with Moraug for extra combats on my opponents turn (which also untaps it and let's me play another land for another combat if I choose to do that), also using it with Adomination Angel and Roil Elemental to help get rid of threats to my board. But for me I run upwards of 50 lands in my landfall deck if you include all my Dual cards I have in there. Along with a lot cards that allow me to play extra lands on my turn and cards that let me play the top card of my deck, that way I can cycle thru my deck playing as many lands as possible hitting those landfalls as many times as possible every turn, while also bring my threats on to the board faster. I've actually used quite a bit of the cards you guys have brought to my attention to make it even better recently.
