In this episode of Hometown Tragedy: Crime Briefs, we examine two cold cases that were finally solved thanks to advancements in DNA technology.
Featured Cases:
The Murder of Christy Mirack:
The two-decade long search for the person who murdered Christy Mirack, a school teacher, deeply frustrated investigators and her Lancaster, PA community. For years her family's questions went unanswered, until DNA testing pointed investigators to someone much closer than anyone imagined.
The Murder of Genevieve Zitricki:
Genevieve Zitricki was 28 years old when she was murdered in her home in Greenville, South Carolina in 1990. Her case went cold and unsolved for 28 years before investigators learned that her case wasn't an isolated incident.
The Murders of Sherri and Megan Scherer:
DNA evidence connected the murder of Sherri Scherer and her daughter Megan of Portageville, Missouri to the murder of Genevieve Zitricki.

He's not sorry. He stayed because he LOVED the idea that he could look at all those people knowing what he'd done. That was the power he held. A remorseful person would have come forward a LONG time ago. The only regret he has is being caught. He's nothing but a POS.

Raymond must have other victims. Anyone who studies criminology and criminal psychology knows that someone doesn’t just kill a random victim with sexual motivation, midway through their life, and then never kill again. Especially if they are able to act as normally as he did after, as if nothing was wrong and he had done nothing. They need to follow his movements. Especially to any jobs he had as a DJ on the road out side of town or state especially.
@allilee2523

I know for a fact that he must have other victims. At the very least he is a serial rapist. But I believe he has other murder victims. He may very well be a serial date rapist who slowly increased the intensity of their crimes. Being a local DJ who was popular in the nightlife scene would have given him plenty of access to be able to slip drugs into victims drinks behind the bar. If he was away at gigs out of town or state he may have followed these drugged victims out of the bar and taken them and killed them. And no one would have known better to connect dots if he did this while traveling since they wouldn’t connect him to those areas.

Raymond Rowe as a DJ, did gigs at bars and elsewhere so he knew the party scene, including local gossip. Christy was having an affair with a married man 20 years older for the last 2 two years. Rowe likely knew, as affairs are tough to hide in small town America. He more than likely got infatuated with her and wanted a piece of the action. DJ's think they're entitled for some reason and she likely turned him down or simply ignored him, a jerk. The affair may have costed her her life.

The man who murdered the school teacher and then stayed around town for the next 30 years just reveling in it made me sick. But, the wife of that man that they showed I did not feel that it was necessary to have her in this. I mean can you imagine her and the rest of her family I don't know if they had children or not but to have had her face included in this I thought was in poor taste. She has a lot to go through yet.

The guy had a family and when police came to a hotel room he was staying in he shot himself just after the police got his wife and kids out the room. It took a while for them to realise he was a serial killer and they didnt know why he shot himself as they went to the hotel on another call not for him.

Help me understand this aspect of that 2nd case: Investigators across 3 states were able to link their murders based on matching perpetrator dna they found at each of their crime scenes. But the perpetrator was in & out of prison his whole life (19:11), meaning his DNA would be in CODIS. So if the investigators could link the dna at each of their crime scenes, why couldn't they also get a link/hit to this guy's DNA in CODIS?

Umm, because there's no other evidence or eye witnesses to help with narrowing down legitimate suspects. It was early 90s I think. DNA testing was in its infancy. You heard investigators say, he wasn't even on their radar. Unless the killer confessed or somebody knew and came forward with information, those cases were not going to be solved. That's why they said it was their last shot. DNA testing and science is a beautiful tool, that hopefully can give more family/friends and law enforcement involved with other cold cases closure.

I still don't understand why people do such awful awful things to other human beings. They didn't even know their victims. But, what still bothers me is that news journalist and the police and things like it they talk about closure. There is no closure. I lost my husband in 1998 and my oldest son in 2005. No one was ever held responsible for either of their deaths. There is no closure. The only thing that has kept me going is my other child also a son who lives with me and the knowledge that I will see my loved ones eventually

For the families of victims of violent crime, there is no such thing as closure. Closure is a word that people not personally involved in such cases use. It might be closure to the investigators because that particular case is closed and they can move on to the next one. But the pin md feelings are always there right under the surface. There is no such thing as closure.

They tie ribbons up every year, to commemorate the day she died ??? So what is it ??? Like a celebration of death and murder ? I am sorry but that just seems so wrong. Of all the accomplishments this woman had.... Milestones that she could be remembered for.... The day of her murder is what is being put in the forefront of people's minds in her community. That is just wrong. Imagine the murderer seeing all these ribbons and feeling like they were for him. For his accomplishment. Acknowledgment for he accomplished. Hell.... Why don't Ya'll just give the guy a parade ? Surely people could think of some other day to rhonor and remember a fine young woman ? The day she was born ? The day she graduated college ? The day she walked into her first classroom as a teacher. Not the day a killer accomplished his sick devient plans to rape and kill her.
