I picked up a 335,000 mile 2006 Forester a couple months ago for $500. The guy I bought it from had paid $600 for it the summer before and was about to junk it. Battery would not charge and it had a coolant leak. Turned out the crankshaft pulley came apart and hit the radiator. Replaced those and engine runs fine. I put on new front pads and rotors and threw on some wheels and tires I had in the garage. Next are new struts and replace the crusty exhaust. These cars are not hard to work on. Deals are out there.

That is awesome. Just did the hubs on my 09 Subaru Forrester 180 thousand miles on it and it’s been up here in Ohio it’s whole life. I got three of them out with the slide hammer manual one but one front one would not come for nothing so I bought longer bolts took the whole front knuckle off then I supported it between two cinderblocks threaded the longer bolts in from the back, which was facing up and then beat it out with a sledgehammer works great just a lot more work 😮

Damn, only $239 for that Astro 658 on Amazon, that's not a bad deal at all for what you're getting out of it! I don't work for Subaru, but I've done enough of those damn Subaru hubs (including on my own Outback) to give it a try. It should definitely work for other vehicles with similar hub bearing assembiles that always get seized in the knuckle. I live in Michigan, so it's definitely worth a try.

In NJ it takes more effort to separate the backing plate from the older bearing then it took to remove the entire hub. I use a 10lb sledge hammer and a hub shocker to even break them free from the knuckle and even that's a pain.

The torque issue is likely the 2.5 ah battery. Testing indicates that the new stubby really NEEDS the 5 ah HO to get close to the numbers on the box. A 2.5 HO will still be around DeWalt DCF 921 levels, so still decent, but you get almost 100 extra ft/lbs with that 5 ah.

That tool would only pull the hub out and leave the bearing stuck on int he rust belt
@CrazyIvan1337Ай бұрын
The way to avoid that is by putting a bolt through the front of the hub with a nut and a huge washer or a metal plate on the back of it. Here in Michigan, I only had to do it once when the hub started pulling out from beating on it. The others, I was lucky enough to get it to wiggle before the hub fell out. Gotta have a big enough and long enough bolt to do it.

Hey man first of all greetings from Brasil. I'm a big fan and have myself an old outback 97 2.5 DHOC pretty cool. But I'm facing a hugh problem with my wife's Forester 2016 FB20 and I was wondering if maybe you could give me some directions here. The front suspension is making that really loud grinding sound but only at the end of steering the wheel both sides. I've already replace everything and cannot make the sound disapear. Also already replace CVT and differential oil and guess what... nothing. One thing that I noticed today on my last attempt (by replacing the last untouched piece. The tie rods and ball joints) is that were an unusual amount of greese near both sides of the power steering box (which BTW is electric in her car), that at first I though was from the CV axle but like I said they are new and not leaking anything and the greese was not the type used on the CV axle, was the regular used one. From where it did come I have no idea ???!!! BTW I cannot duplicate the problem when the car is lifted and the whells are free. I'm not a professional, just a hobbyst with a passion for mechanic and my wife does not trust anyone to mess with her baby Subaru (because is imported here and the nearest certified shop is almost 2 days ride from where we live). Did you faced anything like that before or have any clue of what is or may be happening? Anyway I know that is a long shot and you are a very busy guy so I anyway appreciate your work and hope you success!

@@stephanpatko I know that but wasn’t sure if there was a special tool. Sound travels so it’s hard to trace the origin

It might have obvious play. One way is while driving, load up one side of the suspension by safely turning slightly left or right and see if the sound increases or lessens. Your buttcheeks will let you know which side it is (seriously), then figure if it is front or rear. Another way that works well is having the car up on a lift or jack and spinning the wheel by hand and holding on to the coil spring. If you don't feel vibration in the spring, it's good.

@mrfester42Ай бұрын
@@mark8684 I'm thinking that adding larger diameter wheels would affect the odometer reading or rather, the odometer calibration. What are your thoughts on that?

sharpen a screwdriver and hammer it between the cases, once it opens up a little insert a prybar and wiggle them apart. be careful to make sure the torque converter stays all the way into the trans. ive been doing it that way since the 90s never had a problem.
