Honestly I don't know if it's JUST the being clean thing he hates. I think he believes he's losing a part of himself if he cleans off. You can see he's deathly afraid of his mother, who seems to be the most adamant about his hygiene, so there could be a history of discourse there. The whole thing might just be a rebellion against people who didn't try to understand him, like Lydia's parents? If he gets to do it himself, his way, without the afterthought of when it was forced on him, I doubt he'd care half as much tbh. Same thing with a job/something to do besides scams. Dude has intelligence, insane powers, and clear chemical know-how, so it would NOT be hard for him to get a job if he applied himself.
