To me, Boss Rushes are great for several reasons: 1. You get to use what you learned fighting the boss for the first time now that you're wiser and more experienced with the earlier parts of the game. Maybe you've learned their pattern now and can dodge their attacks and feel more skilled than when you were just fumbling around the first time. 2. You get to feel the difference in power if the game gave you cool abilities / powers that you can now apply to a boss you couldn't have before because you weren't that far in the game yet. Also, if you have increased stats, you watch its health bar go bye-bye and feel satisfied that you can now crush that thing with ease. 3. The gauntlet function it serves to test the player's endurance is a unique challenge the rest of the game doesn't apply, and it can force you to be much more careful than you would be if you knew the level ended right after the boss, because it doesn't. I don't think they should be in every game, but I think they have their positive aspects. TL;DR I'm a Mega Man fan.

It feels so good in Megaman games. I think especially in the X and later series where you have even more upgrades and power bumps than just the weapons. Being able to decimate all 8 bosses that each (in theory) were difficult to beat on their own. I think it was especially satisfying when I was a kid and even beating one or two bosses could take me days of playing and practice.

You missed the fact that boss rushes often force you to manage your resources and thusly are a new challenge that forces you to sometimes avoid crutches. For instance, you may have beat a boss the first time by spamming magic, but on round 2, you have to manage that throughout several fights. Or, in a game like tunic, you have to choose in what order to fight the bosses and when to trigger your limited restocks of supplies based on your strategy. The “problem” with Kyle is that he BARELY likes games. He loves the trappings of games. But he doesn’t like games very much. That’s why he’s more concerned with characters’s bathroom habits I’m the game world than he is actually PLAYING the game. And that’s fine. But if feel like people aren’t honest enough about their biases and think they speak for All gamers.

I feel like rewind stuff goes in the other direction as well, people will use them and justify it by calling the old game "unfair" even though there are plenty of games where that is not the case. I've been playing through all the Classicvania games the last couple of years and I've beat all of them totally legit. I did not grow up with those games (had CV1 as a kid but that was it) so it's an entirely fresh perspective and I have largely been blown away by the series. They're incredibly well designed games even by modern standards. Yet I still see people almost weekly come into the Castlevania sub on reddit and trash talk the games and call them unfair. So to answer the hypothetical question here. Yes. In 30 years people will emulate current day games using rewind and will say the same things. People already complain about how hard Souls games are (even though you can just use a magic build and nuke stuff with no challenge whatsoever) so there will absolutely be people using rewind when Smough butt slams them and will complain about how the game has aged poorly.
@SakuraAvalon
@SakuraAvalon Жыл бұрын
The main reason these old games are so hard, was a mixture of people still learning the relatively new medium, the fact that games were so short, you could just rent and never buy them(if they weren't as hard as they are), and because a lot of developers for consoles came off of making Arcade games. Where the difficulty was intentionally unfair, to try and ring every quarter out of you. The home version gives you the arcade game, but without the ability to keep increasing your continues/lives with however much money you have on hand. Also, I had heard that Japan didn't allow game rentals, and that's why the American version for a lot of games, were made harder.

Same as the megaman and castlevania collections…but I think it still goes to point if games are that easy to access for the person who is actually playing the games…just like some of the comments, if you can only buy one game half a year or so as a child…I would want my moneys worth, but when easy access to a massive game library, you probably wouldn’t think that way anymore.

Circa 2007, I went to a flea market and got a copy of TMNT IV turtles in time for the SNES. I got home, told my roommate I got the game and we just sat down and played for about 20 minutes until the credits rolled. After they ended we just looked at each other and said at the same time "wanna do it again?" and we just hit start again and beat it one more time. So much fun.

6:14 That is such an amazing feature that I am inclined to buy the game now. I could never beat the old turtles games as a kid because they were too hard. Even with rewind I dismissed the games. But playing these games again with that feature would bring a certain nostalgia that I would very much like. Good talk at the end.

I think even though old games aren't the same with rewind and savestates, without them these games would fall into an even deeper niche than they already do and I'd rather people play them than them just being inaccessible or forgotten to time by most people. I think savestates are a reflective of pc gamer culture more than console gaming culture so this is an example ideas within the different cultures clashing. PC games would often let you save whenever you wanted and taking advantage of that was derided as savescumming but that was something the games let you do and whether or not you'd abuse it was on the honor system. Console games weren't meant to have this feature so you're kind of both setting your own rules and your own difficulty on the fly so more of what the game originally was gets lost unfortunately.

The idea that retro games were challenging to “suck quarters” or “sell copies” is utter BS and always has been. Games are challenging because that’s what games ARE. The reality is that most modern “gamers” simply don’t actually like GAMES. The actual games industry is thousands of years old, and the same people asking “ why do boss rushes exist” are the same people who were asking “why do I have to spin before I swing at the piñata? In fact, why don’t you just hand me the candy?” And “ why is hockey on ice? Why can’t it just be on the ground?”

Watch mode is great. It is essentially a TAS. They recorded the input at every point. It's such a valuable tool for people like Bosman who could open a game and just start playing whereever. I mean, it probably wasn't designed so you could last hit the final boss. But if you just want to fight that boss, you can just do that. If you have a thought about a specific stage. Load through and grab some footage or chill in it.

I did a mostly blind clear of TMNT2 NES a month or so back when I heard the new game was imminent, it was fun! Hard, wasn't unfair, I think I got a couple Game Overs in the last stretch of the game but I still got a big fat W, felt good. Still a great game btw! Never beat it as a kid, I'd get to the winter level and just ...die. Over and over. So much loss. I think I saw the words "Spring is Here" like, twice in my life before 2022. But let's not talk about TMNT NES To answer the question "Would I be bored if TMNT was too easy", my dad made me use my birthday money one year not on Tiny Toons, like I wanted, but Where's Waldo. I beat the game in 22 minutes, I looked at him angrily, tears in my eyes, and I walked away from the living room. I was kind of a jerk. But yes, especially when you're "Spending" your own money, if a game gets blown over effortlessly, it is a feelsbadman moment. You don't want to spend $60 on a game and beat it the same day you get home, honestly.

Sakurai had a point about prolonging the life of games. I recently got into a retro kick and was trying to fly through as many retro JRPGs as possible. I put a modifier on my Dragon Quest I game so that my experience points were like quadrupled, which eliminated the need for grinding in the game. I beat the game in like... 4 hours? Maybe even less than that, I don't remember. This was before enemies dropped things for crafting systems or whatever, there was no point in fighting enemies other than getting more experience points so you could finally get to the next area and do it all over again.

Movies had that era where you can't go back to it with the same eyes. You can can only really watch A Trip To The Moon with historian eyes. But movies got past that. I watched 12 Angry Men (1957) for the first time just a few years ago and with my late naughties eyes it was still one of the best movies I've ever watched. So perhaps games have started getting to that point. Last of Us, God of War etc. Maybe they will be evergreen

The auto play thing, is comparable to a youtube lets play. And I find that younger kids tend to just watch a lets play of a retro game than actually play them. So this seems like a 'lets play' that you can take control of. The arcade games were hard to steal all your coins.. The home console games were hard to prevent people from completing them in a single rental. rentals were one of the biggest reasons to make a game hard after the third or fourth stage.. I do find that easier games were less memorable, because there is less accomplishment when you complete them. The squeeze thing,.
