Ecologist here, yes panthers can be dark brown to black, white, or beige. However, they don't have spots! So the old world panthers must be a different species to the ones on earth. Or, they have misidentified a jaguar which is more likely I think.

Just to add to that, in medieval heraldry what were termed 'panthers' were very often depicted with spots, and often breathing fire. They were more of a mythological cat-beast, sometimes incorporating features of other animals. So I'm presuming this is more of a play on the heraldic panther than a real-world animal.

I always thought a pants was just a black leopard or jaguar and the dark fur is due to melanism, and do have spots, they’re just hard to see being black and the fur being nearly black

Panther can be used generically to refer to all big cats, the genus Panthera. Funny enough, panthers (the species) are not panthers (the genus).

Its rather interesting that the two characters are both fairly heavily alligned with specific States within the Empire, but none of the three Pretenders for the Throne. Harald & Hans are both amazing tho

Maybe that’s intentional? So as of a player has painted up an army of one of the three factions then if they had created a character for another of the three that player might not have bought it. Better to have open to all Empire rather then 1/3.

“Panther” is the term usually used to define a leopard or more rarely a jaguar, that has a black coat. Also, if you check the spots are actually still there although more difficult to discern

Both Leopards and Jaguars are members of the Panthera genus, so technically Knight's Panther could be painted to have the skins of any of the following Big Cats! jaguar, leopard, lion, snow leopard and tiger,

Love the model. The problem I have with it is how the knights panther were actually staunch Ulrican supporters and this Grandmaster has been portrayed as a full Sigmarite instead (in Middenheim during the age of 3 Emperors?)

With how long it took him to do the Blood Bowl Gnomes, I guessing middle of 2025. 🤣😂😉 Edit: I could be wrong , but Harald Gemunsen _IS_ a new named character. Remember , The Old World is set around /during the Age of Three Emperors. So this guy would be a different character to the Fantasy Battle version. Besides , I don't think The Grand Master of the Knights Panther in Fantasy Battle was a named character in game. The only named Grand Master , was Kurt .

It also reminds me how odd it is that Total Warhammer still haven't including the Knights Panther or the Knights of the White Wolf which to me were the other two of the original big three, and yet they've added a bunch of the more minor orders.

So a panther is any cat belonging to the sub family Pantherinae and specifically the genus Panthera. This includes Lion, Tigers (not bears oh my), Snow Leopards, Leopards and Jaguars. A black panther most commonly is a melanistic color variant of the Leopard and Jaguar. Melanism is a condition where they have excess of melanin in an organism resulting in dark pigment and colorations. See it kind of like the opposite of Albinism. Some people might wonder ''aren't Cheetahs, clouded leopards and Pumas panthers?''. The answer to this is no they are not. They are considered big cats but they aren't in the Panthera genus. Instead Cheetahs and pumas are in the Subfamily Felinae and clouded leopards ARE in the Pantherinae sub family but they don't belong to the genus of Panthera (though this is a debated topic for clouded leopards) they also aren't considered big cats. Hope this clarifies some confusion!

Panther, as in ''The black panther'' doesn't really exist as a species. It is basically just a leopard or a jaguar that's black. Just like how a black german shepherd isn't a different species. However colloquially, all big cats can be called panthers because they're part of the panthera family of animals.

Great looking model, however sucks it's not plastic and it sucks they didn't bother to resculpt new knights in plastic as the old ones are tiny and frankly crap ,praying they have done this so they can sell the old metal ones on made to order basis

The Empire range will be coming back the same way Brettonia did. Plastic kits are currently all in-stock and the metal/resin kits are unfourtunately hard to get.
