*Attention* *THIS VIDEO CONTAINS A MISTAKE.* If you plan on building a flag such as this, please pay close attention to the orientation of the stars and make sure the points are pointed up correctly how they’re supposed to be on an actual American flag and not how I mistakenly did in this video. Hope I didn’t offend anyone and please note that it wasn’t intentional and wasn’t actually noticed until after the video was posted. Thank you to those who pointed it out and even though I knew better, still failed to catch it. Thanks again for all the support and God Bless.

Also the union appears to be too big. It looks like it is half the width of the flag and it should be roughly 2/5 of the width. There are calculators online for accurate dimensions. Looks good though all things considered.

great video. It looks like the actual stars were painted white. The video does not show that. Could you explain how you did it
@PetesShopMakes5 жыл бұрын
Yes this was the first flag I did it on and I will never do it again. It’s pretty simple and after I was done routing out the stars I just simply sprayed white spray paint over the entire board and then when I went back with the sander to sand off the face off the union and all the paint on top would be removed and the paint that was in the inset Star was all that was left behind. The reason I don’t do that anymore an just leave them natural wood is because when I go over with the blue stain, sometimes you’ll have a little drop or drip that will get into the Star and when they’re not painted it’s easy enough to just take a little sandpaper and get rid of that little blue spot on the star but when they’re painted white, it’s a bit of a headache so that’s why I just leave them natural. You can maybe see what I mean in my other video of the wooden flag build 2.0 on my channel where I kind of show a little more in depth how I do them now. Hope that helps and if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask
@TTC19405 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete. In 2.0 it shows you routing out the stars using the stencil. This brings up a second question. Does not the router ruin the stencil during the cutting process? My thought about the painting was cutting the stars about 1/4" deep with straight sides thus making it easier to paint just the bottom of the stars, may be by hand. Will be experimenting. I like the idea of the painted stars when you have white painted strips and wood colors stars when you have the white strips left natural
@PetesShopMakes5 жыл бұрын
Jim Hamilton i have a stencil video also where I show how I made it and show you that I use a guide bushing in my router that runs along the walls or sides of the stars and doesn’t damage it one bit. Basically like a pattern bit but instead of a bearing it uses a brass bushing.

stryfe2009 they’re called splines. In this case they were purely decorative but in typical mitered corners like pictures frames and what not, they’re used to add strength and stability to an otherwise fairly weak joint.

Wally 76 check out my most recent Flag video of the in depth process and I’ll explain it all there
@PetesShopMakes7 жыл бұрын
Wally 76 but in this video I did it a bit backwards because I cut the stars first before staining blue and hand painted each star white with just a small paint brush( which I don’t recommend and no longer do on my flags) and then just took a foam roller and wet over the top of the stars with the blue stain and because they were inset from being routed out, the white wasn’t compromised. But again check out my newer vid for a better way to do it

Do you have a table saw you can recommend. Mine I discovered did not angle up 90° so all the wood I ripped was way off
@PetesShopMakes6 жыл бұрын
Perils of the Wallet honestly, I’ve owned the delta 36-725 that I got from Lowe’s for about a little over a year now and it has really been a decent saw. It’s a step above a contractor saw which I would stay away from and it’s not as expensive as a cabinet style saw. For about $600 it really can’t be beat. That’s just my opinion but I don’t have much to compare it against since my first saw which I used for years was a cheap little Ryobi I got at a garage sale so anything I got was better than that thing.
@PetesShopMakes6 жыл бұрын
Perils of the Wallet also is your fence adjustable to be able to get it cutting at 90 degrees?
@ramtac330336 жыл бұрын
Pete's Shop Makes I have an entry level Ryobi and the blade itself does not angle up to 90°, it's off just enough that when I clamped down my strips. They bowed up. If I had cut enough I could have made a barrel
@PetesShopMakes6 жыл бұрын
Perils of the Wallet lol! Oh I see ok. Sorry to hear that. Only way I know of adjusting the blade either involves adjusting the table top or the motor mounts. In your case of not being 90 degrees it just seems like assuming you’re able to adjust from 90 to 45 and everything in between, that maybe there is something preventing it from returning to the 90 degree position under the saw. Have you flipped the saw over and looked at the mechanism that adjusts the blade? Could be a piece of wood or something blocking it from sitting perfectly at 90. If not then see if there are some bolts you can loosen to be able to make adjustments if possible. Otherwise I don’t know what else could be the problem without actually seeing the saw for myself
@garyjenkins66295 жыл бұрын
I have a cheap Craftsman saw, but have found that it is best to use a small square to check the blade. If I simply adjust to the stop, it is a couple of degrees off.

This project is so awesome! I want to try it myself. I know the stain was on a discount rack but at the time you made it was were the project costs?
@PetesShopMakes6 жыл бұрын
Michael Herling Not too much man. I’d say the sheet of plywood was probably the most expensive but you can make multiple flags from one 4x8 sheet of ply. With all the 1x4 planks, plywood, propane torch, stain it was around $75 to $100 but I you’re just wanting to know the price of wood, depending on the quality you buy it can be anywhere between $25 to $50 Give or take if I remember correctly.
@Mikdugal16 жыл бұрын
Awesome thanks for the reply. I have this large area in my foyer that I'd love to put a 4 1/2 x 8 foot flag. Since writing my comment to you I have been doing research on sizing for the union and stripes. Based off a quick one time Lowes.com search wood might cost me $156
@Mikdugal16 жыл бұрын
Also going to take a ride down to my grandparents farm he's always trying to get me to take old barn wood. I could use that too would look neat
@PetesShopMakes6 жыл бұрын
Right that’s why I was saying depending on the type of wood you get and I was figuring for a flag the same size as the one I made which would be around the price I quoted you but yeah if you make a 4x8 size then the price you quoted sounds about right. A tip for Lowe’s is to check or ask them to see their cull cart and they’ll have wood that has small defects that you can get for half price or less.
@PetesShopMakes6 жыл бұрын
Michael Herling absolutely! That’s the best kind of wood to use because it’s free and oh won’t have to age it much. Although you’ll probably have to do more milking and will lose a little bit of wood during that process just to make it so the edges of each board are straight and flat and they all line up when you go to assemble your flag.

Pete's Shop Makes Because the "point" of the star is supose to point to the top of the flag not the bottom. What did you use for the red? Is that just regular ol red stain?
@PetesShopMakes7 жыл бұрын
JohnWhite84 ahhhh good eye bro. Shit I never even noticed and good thing neither did the customer. I’ll be sure to pay attention to that in the future. Yes the stain was just a water based stain I got at Lowes and had them put the red pigment in and same with the blue. Also I don’t recommend painting the stars white like I did. It was a pain in the ass trying to make sure that no blue stain would get on the whites of the stars and visa versa. Oh well live and learn.
@JohnWhite847 жыл бұрын
Pete's Shop Makes Easy mistake to make. Flag still turned out pretty cool. They actually have premixed red and blue stain at our local big box store that I use. I have never burned the flag BEFORE applying stain. I really like the way you can see the grain underneath and the clear makes it pop. I will never hand paint 50 stars again lol I stain cut then lightly burn.
@PetesShopMakes7 жыл бұрын
JohnWhite84 yeah I just finished making a star stencil out of 1/2in thick pvc board so I can use it with my router and a guide bushing so it will make the layout of the stars go a lot quicker because that was always the part that has taken me the longest in the past. Just have to remember to make sure the point is up next time😉. Yes I’ve always burned before for that specific reason in just that it makes the grain pop which In turn I think soaks up the stain a little differently giving it that much more defined contrast. Ok well good luck and thanks for the advice.
