This part of Cambodia is underrated. Places like Siem Reap are okay for a few hours but these places are so much more real and a better insight into life in the country.

Just one correction, the number of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand is closer to two million (perhaps a little less), not 4 million. Most are illegal, so they tend to get abused and exploited by their employers. There are also a lot Cambodian migrant workers in Malaysia, S Korea, and Japan. The ones working in Korea and Japan are mostly legal and are much better off than their counterparts in Thailand. Cambodians are willing to work hard when given the opportunity. The system is not set up to create many opportunities for the ordinary people. Additionally, the Khmer mindset is also not conducive to national prosperity. For example, when people become very rich, they might buy property abroad or send their children abroad to support the rich countries. Others donate huge amounts of money to build those grand structures that you see at Buddhist temples. They're built not so much to support the community or Buddhism, but to ensure an even more prosperous next life (most Cambodians believe in reincarnation).

I counted 307 steps. The stairs are steep and they're uneven, so be careful and forewarned. The views and the Angkorian temple were worth the climb however and we all liked the experience.

The temples are well taken care of. The sad part is all the money that is spent in them to make merit. I know of one Cambodian family in America that spent thousand on a temple but would not give money to help some of their family in Cambodia.

It's a misinterpretation of Buddhism. Sadly, many Khmer people hold superstitious beliefs that they believe are Buddhist but are actually very selfish and contradictory to the Buddha's teachings.

@@Q_QQ_Q Cambodia has come a long way. Continued progress depends on peace, stability and constructive cooperation with other countries . However, there is also a powerful force that does not want to see it happen. They are promoting hate, racism and internal conflict among the Khmer people.

Thank you for your video in Cambodia,China is helping Cambodia build a canal, Rek Chik Funan Techo, connecting the lower Mekong River to the Gulf of Thailand. You can visit it. The canal is 180 kilometers (110 miles) long, 100 meters (330 feet) wide, 5.4 meters (18 feet) deep, and can accommodate ships of 3,000 tons. The canal will connect Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, Cambodia's only deep-water port. The project is invested and constructed by a Chinese company. On August 5, 2024, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet presided over the groundbreaking ceremony and said: "We must build this canal at all costs." Cambodia took a day off to celebrate the launch of the project.

Hi Naomi , do you have wheel tattoo on your hand ? It looks like wheel in Buddhism which represents Buddha . Before statue became norm , Buddha used to ( still is ) be represented by wheel & feet prints . You may have heard about Journey to the west , chinese mythology. It actually exist in other societies/countries/tribes as well, there're well documented stories where monks traveled to west , like Japanese monks travelling to west but ending up in Ankor Wat in Cambodia mistaking it for India till 15th/16th century

Thank you both so much, am enjoying this series immensely... You are my kind of travellers, just wandering happy to be experiencing whatever comes up. You certainly are lucky to have found such a kind gentleman for a driver/guide. I get the feeling that I am simply enjoying things with you and commend you for showing such empathy and sensitivity in your interactions with the local people. Cambodia truly is a magnificent country... despite its history and the current regime the fact that the people remain happy, positive and making the best of things is immensely inspiring. Best wishes, M.

The tragedy in Cambodia was initiated by the United States. The U.S. invaded Vietnam and extended the war into Cambodia, supported the Lon Nol coup that overthrew King Sihanouk, and its war contributed to the rise of the Khmer Rouge. While the Khmer Rouge made mistakes in domestic policy, their struggle against U.S. aggression was just. The West now only emphasizes the crimes of the Khmer Rouge, but no one pays attention to the war crimes committed by the United States, and you two are no exception.

The wire rope on that bridge could hold tons, old boards on the other hand. We use to have 3 and two wire rope bridges in NZ. no wood just walk on a wire. Probably government funded think of the cost of that rope. You take a small rope across then pull a bigger rope over then the wire. Maybe you should have a flyer and try to sell to the people that come up to you on the street. Turn it round and chase them off, buy a pocket full of 10c fans and offer them for $5

Yes, China is huge and still has poverty. You dont see it doesn't mean its not exist. Don't forget China was very " poor" not long ago. Being "poor" is not a shame or peoples fault. Not necessary to constantly compare counties. We need to respect the different ways of life.

What you were saying about jobs and making a life it's not much different here in America as far as you got to invest in the job or occupation you want to do whether it be education or starting a business or both. I don't know what this European way you're talking about is I'd love to know more. We lost the whole apprenticeship thing a long time ago in America I think that's what you're talking about my grandfather was German and he told me our education system in America is messed up by Junior High you were already figured out your trade. The high school you could be training for it. 16 he said during his time you could actually be working
