there is a lot about white southern culture outside of strict religious institutions that seems "sex positive" in the sense that people are actually talking about sex, as opposed to all the baptists, but ONLY in an extreme heteronormative way and only quite recently in a way that dares to celebrate sex outside of het marriage. it's why i think the term "sex positive" is sort of fraught by itself because all the intersections of misogyny, homophobia, racism etc dictate who is "allowed" to feel good and be vocal about the sex they are having. the pastor is allowed to talk graphically about having sex with his wife during a sermon, but drag queens are banned from doing 21+ shows at the local bar and we all know why

That’s not entirely true. I am a cishet black woman actively putting together a workshop on sex positivity based on the book _Pleasure Activism_ by adrienne marie brown. This is work that can done in the south and anywhere in the country. The purpose of political education is to expand the possibilities of a framework, not accept the constraints as is. The drag queens don’t stop talking about sex, not for acceptance, but because they’re not asking for permission to do so.

yeah I feel the same like people forget the contradiction that exist is social conservative spaces. Latin America is like that where people hear graphic af language joking about het sex all the time so it’s not revolutionary to hear a hawk tuah type joke in the wild but still a socially sex negative and repressed

I've experienced not being "black enough" for other POC and that does sting, but I remember being very young in elementary school and having a little white girl tell me she was glad I wasn't a "real" black person, that I wasn't "ghetto" and that my hair wasn't "greasy like a real black girl". At the time, I was too young to pinpoint why that felt so wrong to hear. As an adult, I realize it's because I was learning that I was only palletable to non POC if I worked to assimilate. That, in combination with similar behavior from my white mom's family gave me some pretty thick internalized racism to work through.

Oh god ive got that shit all the time and im not even mixed! I remember a couple years ago, i was talking to a Dutch online friend of mine, and i showed him a picture of me for the first time. Guy was flabberghasted and said "im surprised you're black!" And when i asked why he said that, he said I, "Didnt sound like his black friends usually did", and when i laughed and asked wtf that even means, he proceeded to do a stereotypical 'ghetto' accent with terribly conjugated aave. When i tell you i was deeply astonished. Ive heard this so often that its not funny, even from some black people. Like, tf do you mean im not like other black people???? We are not a monolith??? We have different accents depending on region, neighborhood, upbringing??? Its very frustrating and I'm sorry you experienced that too

I am immunocompromised and I could never act like Covid went away like so many others. I ended up getting covid once even though I have never not worn a mask and gotten all of the shots. It was horrible. I'm still dealing with long covid symptoms especially fatigue, lung, and heart issues, a year + later. And now my office is making us come back, I wear a mask and I am ostracized for it. It is very lonely and heartbreaking knowing people around me simply do not care. Not about themselves and not about anyone else. Thanks for talking about this!

This whole experience is really showing how many people have never had real struggles in their lives. I have evaded COVID this far and just my normal aches and pains of aging make me dread the next several decades until I can retire - I can only imagine how much harder it is with a chronic illness known for specifically sapping you of your energy and strength! To not be willing to care about what you might spread to those around you who could suffer even more is just outwardly cruel. Humans didn't get to where we are by being solely self-interested, we all need to work together to hold all of us up, and the fewer people who care the worse it is for ALL of us. I truly hope things improve for you, life is hard to juggle even without those issues.💛

Yeah, and it's not like society really offers up much of a choice for people to try and avoid it still - a lot of people just seem to have blanked out the last 5 years. We all still have to work and carry out the rest of our lives, and also did we all forget every other disease exists as well? Even if you don't care about COVID, the same measures to avoid it will also help you avoid every other respiratory disease too! It just feels silly to me it took us as a society so long to want to stop spreading diseases as far as possible lol

People tend to lean to extremes. I still see people alone in their car, with a mask sometimes. And then you have the folks going shopping while having a fever of 100. I think neither extreme is good, but there's no question as to which I prefer. One is unnecessary discomfort for an individual (by their own choice), the other is an unacceptable endangerment of others. If you or a housemate are sick, wear a mask in public or, better yet, just stay home as much as you can. Not that hard or impeding on life, and extremely effective.
@puppyyuppy8618
@puppyyuppy8618 2 ай бұрын
@@DaTimmehthere are plenty of reasons to wear a mask when you're alone in your car. reducing fomite transmission, maybe someone's about to get in the car, they dont want to disrupt the mask's seal as it is compromised more each time you wear it-- how bout just minding your business and not both sidesing it? being "overly" cautious doesnt k!ll or disable the people around you. going to the store when you're contagious does.
@DaTimmeh
@DaTimmeh 2 ай бұрын
@@puppyyuppy8618 because I really am playing the both sides argument with my comment. I quite literally said they're not the same, multiple times. There is no need to attack me, I'm not telling people to stop wearing masks while driving alone in their car, I'm just saying that it's unnecessary. There are thousands of actions you take every day, which are more risky to their health than driving alone without a mask. Like driving, in general. Having lots of skin exposed, not all diseases transmit by breathing them in. Going outside, where there are lots of animals potentially carrying diseases. It's the equivalent of tending to a bruise, when you have an open wound somewhere else. But once again, you do you, it doesn't affect or bother me. I will still point out that it's unnecessary and find it funny.

Thank you all for talking about COVID!! I'm immunocompromised and don't have much of a network. My world has gotten so, so small, hard, and empty the past few years 🙃 one of the only things that gives me hope my life will ever get better is when people with platforms talk about COVID and normalize still taking precautions. I do hope that next time you rely a bit more on masks and less on hand washing!! COVID is airborne. Washing your hands as a primary defense is kind of like buckling your seatbelt as a primary defense against food poisoning. It's not defending against the right mechanisms to be effective in the ways you want. Haven't even finished the episode yet; just wanted to make sure I didn't forget to express my gratitude. Hawk Tuah is funny amongst the same people who comment "OF detected, opinion invalid" on Instagram Reels... I don't understand. Like do you want women to talk about sex or not? It's the most like Barstool, misogny-core, frat-coded meme. I've never felt so niche and pigeon-holed in my life than when that meme went viral and I had never seen it before in my life... like it's not a bad meme. It's fine. But I don't get the fervor for it. I, especially, hate the reaction from people who act like it's like this transcendent Harambe type meme? It's a pretty blonde girl who gives top, wow crazy. I've known plenty of those (shout out Scottsdale)! Maybe I just hate conservative memes (not to say she is, just the crowd that enjoys it). Her getting attention and money is fine. I respect the hustle, get ya bag sis. But it's weird that the tide is turning against her for taking advantage of her fame. Like you made her famous, you bought her merch, are you really surprised she wants to take advantage of that? They're going to discard her so hard, like they do with every woman. Hope the gay men co-opt the meme. At least she'll get love from someone. Message of the day: don't get in bed with conservatives, or else they'll expect you to hawk tuah your rights away.

this isn't to blame anyone or anything, bc that's not how this stuff works. that said, just because you hang out with a group of people that is small and who all knows each other, doesn't make you less at risk of COVID. just so everyone is aware, it's an airborne illness and unless everyone is isolating and religiously masking in most in-person scenarios in their lives, the odds of getting COVID aren't low. what sucks is that our governments have let us down entirely and have made it so so difficult for risk mitigations to be widely adopted. it's so frustrating 😢 i'm glad y'all are feeling better now!

Seriously. I have seen so many instances of coworkers coming in sick because the jobs didn't offer sick pay and were always short staffed, so folks were basically guilted into working sick to not be an inconvenience to others, when realistically that's genuinely not the worker's problem! We need to be able to take time to keep ourselves healthy! Besides, if the government had better rules around sick pay for routine care as well as time off, people would generally be more well off and more able to work! Even from a strictly capitalist perspective, keeping employees in good shape will always benefit you more in the long term.

I think what they mean is it was a small group of people that all hang out on a regular basis anyway, so they were at no more risk of catching covid by going to the birthday party than they are by just having some friends over for dinner etc. Unlike some easily avoidable superspreader parties that happened in 2020.

Should be noted that rapid tests do not give a reliable negative in any way at this point. They have not been updated in an incredibly long time and the instructions provided are insufficient for collecting a sample. It's so awful because you can be doing what Jarvis was and testing every single day to be responsible and the tools are just letting us all down. By the time you are getting a thick line like Anastasia you have already been sick for over a week, even if youve been getting negative rapids every day up to that point.

Respect for still taking COVID somewhat seriously; where I live it's basically like it never happened, and no one has changed anything. I'm probably gonna be a masker in public forever because: A. It's instinctual now every time I'm going into somewhere I'll be close to multiple other people B. It's super easy to just throw a mask on since I keep a box in my car and good N95s are very comfortable (I recommend the 3M "Aura" branded ones, though they are more pricey) C. I have not had a single respiratory infection since 2019, which is extremely awesome. I hate being sick, and definitely would like to dodge something with lots of people having long term issues. Life is hard enough already y'all. It's also good to remember that the vaccine will generally not keep you from contracting the virus but WILL reduce the severity of your instance and SUBSTANTIALLY cut the odds of long term problems. It's worth it, and I am someone who has rough reactions to lots of vaccinations where I often feel very sick for the day afterwards, which reads to me as a bit of reassurance that my body would respond even worse to the actual infection.
